Dear friends,

It is hard to believe that it has been a full year since I was o�cially handed the gavel by my esteemed colleague, Martha Lamkin, to serve as the Indiana Symphony Society’s Board Chair.

Twelve months have passed, and I’m delighted to report that I feel more optimistic about our organization than ever before. The Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra is a tremendous asset toIndianapolis with its quality performances, educational programming, innovative initiatives, and its broad community reach.

The 2014-2015 season certainly re�ected this spirit. The artistic leadership of ISO Music Director Krzysztof Urbański – a rising talent in the orchestra world – is second to none. Principal Pops Conductor Jack Everly continues to dazzle audiences with a wide spectrum of popular music. Our artists-in-residence, Time for Three, cleverly bridge together classic and contemporary music in new and exciting ways. And, our Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra members give our community the very best of themselves and their art, week after week, inside and outside the Hilbert Circle Theatre.

This season, our organization has been ambitious, innovative, strategic, unwavering and extraordinary – all while balancing the operating budget for the third consecutive year. The ISO Board was delighted and humbled with the news two weeks ago that The Lilly Endowment Inc. would be investing $10 million in the ISO to help stabilize the organization �nancially. This vote of con�dence from The Endowment is further endorsement of the great strides we have made in recent years, and of the direction we are headed.

With our superior Orchestra, a dedicated ISO board, the talented ISO sta� and crew, and a tremendously supportive community of donors, patrons and fans, I see a future �lled with promise. I’m sure there’s much more in store for our Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra.

TOP FIVE HIGHLIGHTS AND ACHIEVEMENTS IN 2014-2015

Musical Excellence: For the �rst time since becoming Music Director of the ISO, Krzysztof Urbański created a special three-week music festival devoted to one cultural theme: Russia. “Fantasy, Fate and War: A Russian Music Festival” included concerts, programs and events, all capturing the power and expressiveness of the country’s great composers and culture.

New Communities: The ISO stretched beyond its downtown home into the communities of Hendricks County and Greater Greenwood with its new Duke Energy 317 Series of concerts, classes and public events. With support from the Robert S. and Margot L. Eccles Fund, a charitable fund of CICF, and the National Endowment for the Arts, the Duke Energy 317 Series brought the ISO’s music and educational activities to growing communities outside of downtown Indianapolis.

Growing Audiences: The total number of subscribers to ISO concerts increased by 24 percent, with new subscribers jumping 52 percent from the previous season. The ISO also sold 9,014 students tickets to its classical and pops performances – an all-time record.

Donor Commitment: “Why I Give” was the overriding theme this season, with individuals and corporations stepping up with new and increased support of the ISO’s concerts and activities. In addition, three new title sponsors were named – Indianapolis Power & Light (IPL Yuletide Celebration), Roche Diagnostics (Metropolitan Youth Orchestra), and Duke Energy (Duke Energy 317 Series) – while Marsh Supermarkets renewed its signi�cant sponsorship for Marsh Symphony on the Prairie through 2018.

A Balanced Budget: For the third consecutive year, the ISO �nished its �scal year with an operating surplus.

SEPTEMBER 13

The Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra’s second annual Community Day delighted more than 1,200 patrons with musical activities for all ages, chamber music performances by ISO musicians, and a free ISO concert conducted by Music Director Krzysztof Urbański.

SEPTEMBER 14

Opening Night Gala was an enchanting evening of music and celebration, with Krzysztof Urbański conducting excerpts from Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake and Beethoven’s �rst piano concerto with Jeremy Denk.

Thanks to the leadership and support of Yvonne Shaheen and John and Deborah Thornburgh, Co-Chairs of the Gala Committee, Opening Night Gala was a �nancial success.

SEPTEMBER 28

The ISO’s new Duke Energy 317 Series launched with a concert at Avon High School’s Hendricks Regional Health Performing Arts Center. Funded by the Robert S. and Margot L. Eccles Fund, the Duke Energy 317 Series included concerts of great masterworks, high school programs with ISO musicians and public events in the communities of Hendricks County and Greater Greenwood.

OCTOBER 3

In his 14th year as ISO’s Principal Pops Conductor, Jack Everly opens the Printing Partners Pops Series with a 50th anniversary celebration of The Beatles’ arrival in the U.S. This season, Maestro Everly also paid tribute to the late Marvin Hamlisch and the leading men of Broadway, while sharing the stage with stars Megan Hilty, Kenny G, Sandi Patty and Matthew Morrison.

NOVEMBER 2

The ISO traveled to Center Grove High School for the �rst installment of Duke Energy 317 Series in the Greater Greenwood community. The ISO also performed in front of hundreds at Mount Pleasant Christian Church.

DECEMBER 5

Indianapolis native Angela Brown and Broadway star Ben Crawford reunited with ISO Principal Pops Conductor Jack Everly for holiday extravaganza, IPL Yuletide Celebration. The crowds also went wild for ISO resident ensemble Time for Three and the tribute medley to the Disney �lm, Frozen.

FUN FACT: The ISO’s Monument Circle neighbor, IPL, became the title sponsor this year. IPL’s commitment to the Orchestra has been ongoing since 1984, when the company played a signi�cant role in the renovation of the historic Circle Theatre.

DECEMBER 19

The ISO expanded its footprint north of the beltway with a new 6-concert series in the Palladium in the Center for the Performing Arts. Opening in December with a sold-out performance of Handel’s Messiah, the classical concert series featured masterworks by Shostakovich, Dvořák, Mendelssohn and Mahler.

JANUARY 3

Concertmaster Zach De Pue provided a poignant rendition of the “Star Spangled Banner” in front of 60,000 Colts fans at Lucas Oil Stadium.

FUN FACT: The Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra was the �rst musical group to perform in Lucas Oil Stadium during the building’s opening festivities in 2008. Since then, ISO musicians and many guest artists have been invited back each year to perform the national anthem.

JANUARY 22-23, 29-31 & FEBRUARY 6-7

The ISO’s midwinter music festival, “Fantasy, Fate & War,” was held at the Hilbert Circle Theatre. Patrons enjoyed all-Russian chamber music programs by ISO musicians, three weeks of concerts, and lively presentations leading up to the ISO premiere of Shostakovich’s gripping Seventh Symphony (“Leningrad”), led by Krzysztof Urbański.

MARCH 4

Fifty-�ve high school students from all over central Indiana won the audition to perform alongside their orchestra counterparts for the ISO’s annual Fifth Third Private Bank Side-by-Side concert. Since 1991, Side-by-Side has reached more than 1,000 talented student musicians, many of whom have gone on to pursue successful careers in music.

On that same night, the ISO recognized the signi�cant donors and volunteers who have supported the organization in 2014-2015.The winners were:

FUN FACT: From ushers to board members, from ISOA and FORTE members to committee volunteers, 1,677 people have contributed more than 15,000 hours to the ISO over the past year.

MARCH 6

The ISO launched the Teddy Bear Series, a free program geared toward young children ages 3-6. In partnership with the Indianapolis-Marion County Public Library and underwritten by Friends of Ava Button, hundreds of kindergarten and preschool-aged kids, with their teddy bears in hand, enjoyed music and fun with members of the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra.

FUN FACT: The �rst program in this new series featured the book, “The Giant’s Violin,” by author and ISO violinist, Vicky Griswold.

MARCH 10

The �rst review is posted of the ISO’s recent recording of works by Bloch and the premiere of Nico Muhly’s Cello Concerto.

More than 1,000 families enjoyed the ISO’s free Celebration of Black History concert. The poignant performance was dedicated to the late Bill Mays, longtime supporter of the ISO through Mays Chemical.

ISO Principal Trombone Jim Beckel premiered his newest composition – a concerto honoring the orchestral brass instruments – to enthusiastic audiences. Co-commissioned by the ISO, the Evansville Philharmonic, the Oklahoma City Philharmonic and the Omaha Symphony, the work was inspired by and dedicated to “the mentoring of loving parents.”

In one of its foremost events, the ISO raised more than $50,000 in this season’s annual golf outing, the Maestro Open.

MAY 17

The ISO’s Metropolitan Youth Orchestra wrapped up its season of music-making with its special “Jazz and Jam” performance with MYO students, teachers, family members and local musicians. Since its creation in 1995, the MYO has grown signi�cantly and now serves 220 students and families from diverse neighborhoods in Indianapolis.

FUN FACT: This year, every high school student in the MYO program graduated high school and pursued an advanced education.

The second annual Lunch Break Series began and extended into late July with six weekly performances. Supported by the Efroymson Fund, these casual, $5 concerts over lunchtime were a favorite event of hundreds of downtown visitors, residents and families.

One of the bene�ts of donating to the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra Annual Fund is the opportunity to access the ISO in new ways. Donors invited to “On Stage at the ISO” learned how to play the violin from members of the Metropolitan Youth Orchestra, toured the ISO’s extensive music library, and got up close and personal with Maestro Jack Everly.

The ISO’s 34th season of Marsh Symphony on the Prairie took patrons on a musical journey across �ve centuries of music, in the span of just 12 weeks this summer. Even with two cancelled performances due to weather, the ISO achieved record revenue for this season’s outdoor series.

FUN FACT: The �rst performance of Marsh Symphony on the Prairie occurred on June 5, 1982, and featured a 14 year-old violin prodigy making his professional orchestra debut: Joshua Bell.

LETTER FROM THE TREASURER

Fiscal year 2015 (FY15) continued to build upon the �nancial success the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra (ISO) has achieved over the past three years. For the third consecutive year the ISO ended the year with a balanced operating budget, with strong ticket sales and attendance growth.

The general operating surplus during FY15 was the result of both an increase in total revenue and a reduction in total expenses. Total general operating revenues during FY15 were $255,324 higher than FY14, primarily due to an increase in ticket sales and fee income of $308,748. Earned income from ticket sales for the 2014-2015 season increased 8% over the 2013-2014 season. Total endowment draw for the �scal year was 6.2%, which included $3.93 million for operations and $1.46 million for the required cash contribution to the de�ned bene�t pension plan.

The ISO also had another successful fundraising year in FY15 with $9.25 million in contributions. Contribution levels in each of the last three years have exceeded $9.0 million, signi�cantly higher than any previous year in the history of the ISO. This level of fundraising could not have been achieved for the third consecutive year without continued strong community support, and we are extremely grateful to the thousands of individuals, corporations and foundations who have invested in the ISO.

The ISO Board of Directors is committed to ensuring that the institution continues to present artistically compelling performances and programs while remaining on sound �nancial footing for many years to come. The results of the past �scal year show that we continue on our path towards this goal.

As I complete my �rst year as Treasurer, I want to thank the many people who work so diligently to deliver the �nancial oversight to ensure the ongoing success of this great institution and would like to speci�cally acknowledge the �nance sta� and Finance Committee of the Board.
