From the Office of the President Changing Flows The theme this month is “Changing Flows”. As in, I wish someone would change the flow of the Polar Vortex away from Chicago! While we don’t know what’s happening with the vortex, we do know what is happening down in Panama. Our March 20th program, in conjunction with the CSCMP Chicago Roundtable explores the Panama Canal Update: Changing Inland Transportation Flows. Featuring Bill Johnson, Director of PortMiami as the morning keynote speaker, and a panel moderated by Jim Hertwig, President, Florida East Coast Railway, our March educational session is an excellent opportunity to learn and think about the interconnected world of transportation and logistics. Fittingly, the March session is hosted at the Wojcik Center at Harper College, in Palatine. Fittingly because your Club has been actively working to grow and strengthen our reach with lifelong learners of every age. In 2012, the Club approved new membership options specifically for students and for educators. These new memberships are intended to strengthen the Club and enhance the connections between our working Transportation professionals, interested Supply Chain students in our region, and the thought leaders who are teaching and mentoring them. I am proud to announce that under our Membership Chair, Tom Degnan, your Club has added nearly 40 new members in the last year through these programs! Also in March, the Traffic Club of Chicago announces its annual scholarship winners. In honor of George Baima, this year’s scholarships winners will include the inaugural presentation of the George Baima scholarship award, recognizing the top scholarship winner and representing George’s commitment to supporting students and their success. March is a great month to use the resources of the Club to fulfill our key objectives: make transportation professionals more knowledgeable, create strong relationships, and have fun! Sincerely, Craig Boroughf March 20 Executive Briefing Will Cover the Panama Canal The Traffic Club along with the CSCMP Round Table, will jointly present “Panama Canal Update: Changing Inland Transpor- tation Flows” on Thursday, March 20 in the Wojcik Conference Center of Harper College in Palatine, IL. This half-day program will cover how the expansion of the Panama Canal will impact global busi- ness, possibly change trade lanes, and spur infrastructure investments. The program will begin with a keynote address by Bill Johnson, Port Director for PortMiami, one of the nation’s top container cargo ports and the busiest cruise port in the world. Currently, the port is going through a $2 billion in infrastructure improvements that includes a Port tunnel in conjunction with the Florida State Department of Trans- portation; the re-introduction of on-dock freight rail service with Florida East Coast Railway, and the deepening of the Port’s channel to accommodate the new generation of larger, container cargo vessels. Following Mr. Johnson’s presentation will be a panel session moderated by Jim Hertwig, President of the Florida East Coast Railway. The panel will consist of executives who have worked on the Panama Canal project, shippers, 3PL’s and logistics customers who will discuss what affects the expansion will have on the Midwest market. The day will conclude with a luncheon followed with a keynote address by Kevin Keller, Vice President at HDR Engineer- ing, Inc. Mr. Keller has assisted the Panama Canal Authority as client manager for its Program Management Advisory and Related Services contract. He has nearly 30 years of management, planning, environmental, and engineering experience in the transportation and freight logistics sector.

Scholarship awards Will be Presented at March luncheon Tom Tisa, chair of the Scholar-ship Committee has announced that this year’s awards presentation will be held in conjunction with our March Executive Series luncheon program on Thursday, March 20 at the Wojcik Conference Center of Harper College in Palatine, IL. Once again the awards will be presented in an academic set-ting, and although the awards take place during the school year, we hope that some of the students will be able to join us to accept their awards that day. The judging of this year’s applicants are just about completed, and all the applicants, their parents and or grand-parents will be informed by phone or e-mail prior to our March 20 luncheon. The names of this year’s winning ap-plicants will be announced in the April issue of the Waybill. The committee is quite pleased with the large turnout of applicants this year (32), and hopes that those who are not among this year’s recipients will not be deterred from ap-plying for next year’s awards program.
