LawWithoutWalls (LWOW)This is a collaborative academic model that brings together students, faculty, practitioners, and entrepreneurs from around the country and the world to explore innovation in legal education and practice. LawWithoutWalls is an exciting and unique opportunity for students to collaborate across institutions and countries, gain business, entrepreneurial, investigative research, and team building skills and, more importantly, invaluable experience and insight into the world of law and business.

THE IDEA OF THE HOSPITALSpanning seven distinct disciplines across the University of Miami, this truly interdisciplinary course—the first of its kind—gives graduate students an exclusive opportunity to study the multiple perspectives within which we view, think, and work in hospitals. Graduate students and professors from the following schools—Law, Medicine and the Department of Epidemiology and Public Health, Architecture, Business, Nursing and Health Studies, and Engineering—gather to study topics related to hospitals.

WATER RESOURCES IN CHINA AND VIETNAMThis five-week summer course in Vietnam and China, jointly taught by Miami Law and UM’s renowned Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science, enhances students’ understanding of the challenges related to water resources and their effective management.

INTERNATIONAL EXCHANGE PROGRAMSMany students want to gain exposure and learn about more than one country’s system of laws. Miami Law has expanded its international exchange opportunities with law schools in cities around the world.

MOOT COURT PROGRAMSTo enhance oral and written advocacy skills, students can choose amongst the most prestigious advocacy programs in the country—The Charles C. Papy, Jr. Moot Court Board and the International Moot Court Program.

Students took home the top spot in six prestigious competitions: the Frankfurt Investment Arbitration Moot Court competition, the ABA National Appellate Advocacy Regional Competition, the Evan A. Evans Constitutional Law Moot Court Competition, the Irving R. Kaufman Memorial Moot Court Competition, the John J. Gibbons Criminal Procedure Moot Court Competition, and the Robert Orseck Memorial Competition. Miami Law students also finished in the top 4 percent at the National Appellate Advocacy Championship and advanced to the semifinals of Tulane Law’s Annual National Baseball Arbitration Competition.

A substantial percentage has extensive international legal experience, which is reflected in the school’s curriculum. Recent faculty hires include experts in bankruptcy, intellectual property law, environmental law, and patent law, further enriching the school’s research and teaching enterprises.

LEGAL COMMUNICATION AND RESEARCH SKILLS PROGRAMKnown as “LComm,” this two-semester, innovative program prepares first-year students for the demands of today’s legal profession.

Small Class Size: Professors with significant legal practice experience teach students to carry out the complicated tasks that attorneys encounter daily. Some include: analyzing realistic legal problems and writing memoranda, correspondence, motions, and briefs.

Practice Readiness: The program teaches the essential soft skills of successful attorneys, such as workplace etiquette, teamwork, and professionalism that make our students marketable to employers and effective in practice.

Legal Research Skills: Students complete experiential learning techniques and short and major research exercises throughout the year with an emphasis on efficiency, accuracy, and cost.

LITIGATION SKILLS PROGRAM Our highly acclaimed “Lit Skills” Program engages students in rigorous, hands-on training providing them with the practical skills necessary for competent professional legal service. Taught by experienced trial lawyers and judges, 60 percent of second and third-year law students enroll in this six-credit course. Additionally, this program is unique in that students who graduate from the course are placed in a six credit externship program in which they are certified by the Supreme Court of Florida to engage in the supervised practice of law.

EXTERNSHIP PROGRAMIn this program students work with legal departments of local, national, and international corporations, government agencies, public interest organizations and the judiciary for academic credit.

Complementary Course: Working under the supervision of judges and lawyers, students enroll in a supplemental course related to their externship placement. The course is divided into three sections: judicial, litigation and business/corporate.

Entertainment Inc., Miami Dolphins, Humane Society of the U.S., NextEra Energy Resources, Recording Industry Association of America, Ultra Music Festival, Bacardi USA, Inc., Louis Vuitton North America, U.S. Securities & Exchange Commission, Federal Public Defender of the Southern District of Florida, U.S. Coast Guard and more.

D.C. Semester in Practice: This 12-credit program combines an externship with coursework in Washington, D.C., placing students in various government agencies, nonprofits, and advocacy organizations.

HOPE PUBLIC INTEREST RESOURCE CENTER HOPE (Helping Others Through Pro Bono Efforts) is the first stop for students interested in finding ways to provide access to justice for others. It provides information, guidance, and training for law students dedicated to community service and advocacy and offers them hands-on opportunities to make a difference through public interest engagement.

HOPE operates as a hub at the law school, connecting students, faculty, and alumni to the various pro bono and public service experiences available at Miami Law, and in communities locally, nationally and internationally.

HOPE oversees the Summer Public Interest Fellows Programs and The Hope Fellows, which provide stipends and training in public interest agencies worldwide.

Miami Scholars serve as leaders on campus and help promote a culture of public interest engagement. The Miami Scholars Public Interest Program represents Miami Law’s commitment to promoting social justice through the law.

MIAMI STREET LAWMiami STREET Law is an educational, legal outreach program that trains current law students to teach law at high schools throughout Miami-Dade County. The mission of the program is to empower youth through interactive education about law, democracy, and human rights while furthering the professional development of law students.

CENTER FOR ETHICS & PUBLIC SERVICE (CEPS)This center is devoted to public service in law and society and has programs dedicated to ethical judgment, professional responsibility, and assistance to low-income communities of color. The Center’s programs provide antipoverty and civil rights seminars and workshops and community-based research.

Other programs include the Historic Black Church Program which works in partnership with the West Grove 16-church Ministerial Alliance, providing resources in education, law, and social services to underserved residents, and the Environmental Justice Project which works to increase awareness and provide support to communities affected by issues related to environmental justice.
