NCAA DIVISION III

In 2013, Covenant became full members of the NCAA Division III following a four year transitional period from 2009-2013.

The largest division, in terms of number of schools and number of participants, is Division III comprised by more than 170,000 student-athletes at 444 mostly smaller institutions.

Academics are the primary focus for Division III student-athletes. The division minimizes

the conflicts between athletics and academics and keeps student-athletes on a path to graduation through shorter practice and playing seasons, the number of contests, no redshirting and regional competition that reduces time away from academic studies. Student-athletes are integrated on campus and treated like all other members of the general student-body, keeping them focused on being a student first.

The college experience is a time of learning and growth — a chance to follow passions and develop potential. For student-athletes in Division III, all of this happens most importantly in the classroom and through earning an academic degree. The Division III experience provides for passionate participation in a competitive athletic environment, in which student-athletes push themselves to excellence and build upon their academic success with new challenges and life skills. And student-athletes are encouraged to pursue their full passions and find their potential through a comprehensive educational experience.

The Three D’s:

DiscoverDivision III student-athletes are encouraged to pursue their interests and passions beyond the classroom and field of play…to discover themselves.

DevelopDivision III institutions provide an environment that encourages student-athletes to develop into well-rounded adults. Small class sizes, the ability to participate in more than one sport, and an emphasis on participating activities outside of the classroom are all hallmarks of the Division III experience.

DedicateDivision III institutions expect student-athletes to dedicate themselves to achieving their potential. Student-athletes must manage their busy schedules, keep up with class work and face the same challenges as the rest of the student-body.

BARNES PE CENTERHOME OF THE SCOTS

Barnes Physical Education Center was built in 1972 and named in honor of Covenant’s second president, Dr. Marion D. Barnes. The facility plays host to the Scots’ men’s and women’s basketball and volleyball programs as well as other athletic department needs.

During the summer of 2013, Barnes PE Center received a facelift with new interior paint jobs and championship banners honoring all 13 of Covenant’s athletic programs. New bleachers were installed in October of 2013 to update the facility further. Seating capacity is set at 650.

The main floor houses the game court to go along with offices for athletic administration. On the first floor are located an aerobic exercise room, weight room and more office space. The third floor has additional coaches and faculty offices and a classroom.

Although a small venue, Barnes can become loud and raucous as spectators sit close to the action. In 2012-13, the Scots men’s basketball team used their home-court advantage to secure a 9-3 home record.

Sarah Harris Head CoachThe 2014-15 season will be the second for Sarah Harris at

Covenant as she was hired in May of 2013.

Harris came to Covenant from Wheaton (Ill.) College where

she spent three seasons under Thunder head coach Kent

Madsen. Harris also previously spent four seasons as the

head coach at Grove City College, an NCAA Division III

member in Pennsylvania. At Grove City, Harris won 39

games from 2006-2010. She also served as a graduate

assistant coach at UNC Greensboro from 2004-06.

“Covenant College quickly won me over with its

commitment to pursuing athletic excellence within the

framework of a genuine Christian academic environment,”

said Harris at the time of her hiring. “I am thrilled to have the opportunity to be a part of the Covenant community

and work towards helping the women’s basketball program grow in what it is capable of achieving on the court

and in the lives of the student-athletes in this program.”

Harris’ first season at Covenant in 2013-14 was also the program’s first year in the tough USA South Athletic

Conference. The team ended the year winning three of its final four contests to finish 8-17 overall.

In 2009 at Grove City, Harris was named Presidents’ Athletic Conference Coach of the Year as well as Great Lakes

Region Coach of the Year by D3Hoops.com. In her four years at Grove City, she coached players to All-PAC honors

six times and had one NCAA All-Region player.

“We are thrilled to add Sarah Harris to the athletics team at Covenant College,” said Taylor. “Her extensive

background both as a player and coach at the NCAA Division III level was a key factor in our decision. She had a

solid career at Wheaton, served as a head coach at Grove City, and has been back at Wheaton as an assistant. All in

all she has 12 years of experience at Christian liberal arts Division III institutions, and that is exactly what we need.”

Harris graduated cum laude from Wheaton with a degree in Spanish in 2003. In 2004, she completed a master’s

degree in intercultural studies/TESOL at Wheaton and she earned a second master’s degree from UNC Greensboro

in 2006, completing her master of science degree in exercise and sport science.

As a player at Wheaton, Harris started in each of her final three seasons. She helped the Thunder capture the

College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW) title during her sophomore and senior seasons. Harris helped

lead the Thunder to an 80-24 overall record, including a 44-12 mark in CCIW play. She earned All-CCIW Third Team

honors following both her sophomore and junior seasons, finishing her career with over 900 points at Wheaton.

Harris also earned Academic All-District honors in both her junior and senior seasons.

Taylor continued, “The really exciting aspect for me is that she will pursue a level of athletic excellence without

sacrificing our larger mission and vision to recruit, train & equip, and send out Godly women who will make an

impact for the Kingdom of God. Sarah understands the type of student athlete we want to attract to Covenant,

and she will work hard to bring in those women.”

“My desire is that Covenant women’s basketball be characterized by quality students, talented athletes who love

to play the game of basketball, and most importantly, young women who love the Lord Jesus Christ, and I am

humbled by the prospect of being a part of such an important venture,” added Harris.

Kiaira Cooper Full-time Assistant and JV Coach

Kiaira Cooper will enter her first year as the full-time assistant wom-

en’s basketball coach in 2014-15.

Cooper graduated from Covenant in the spring of 2014 and was a

member of the Lady Scots program for five years, taking a medical

redshirt in the 2011-12 season. As a senior in 2013-14, Cooper played in

18 games and averaged 7.3 points and 5.3 rebounds per game.

“I’m really excited and thankful to be back at Covenant,” said Cooper.

“This program has been a big part of my life for the last five years,

coming back is blessing.”

“As a coach, I love seeing former players enter into the coaching pro-

fession,” commented Harris, who will enter her second year as head

coach this season. “It’s particularly exciting to have one of those play-

ers return to the sideline at her alma mater and continue to invest in

this program in a new role.”

Cooper also had success in the classroom as a student. With a degree

in Art, she earned USA South All-Academic honors for the 2013-14

year and was named to the Dean’s List at Covenant four times.

“Ki had a successful career as both a basketball player and a student

at Covenant,” continued Harris. “She possesses a love for Covenant

College, a commitment to this basketball program, and a desire to

see both Covenant College and Covenant basketball grow in excellence. As a result, Ki is able to speak effectively

to both current and future Scots about the incredible value of a Covenant education that takes place on and off the

basketball court.”

Added Cooper, “I hope I can help the present and future Scots with their pursuit of excellence beyond the basket-

ball court, whether that is pursuing excellence in faith, academics, relationships or any other aspect of their lives.”

Originally from Powder Springs, Georgia, Cooper attended North Cobb Christian High School. She now resides in

Red Bank, Tennessee.

Scots Ready to Improve in 2014-15

LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN – Under second-year head coach Sarah Harris, the Covenant women’s basketball team opens

up the 2014-15 season on Saturday at home against Oglethorpe at 4 p.m.

Harris and the Scots are looking to build off the success they had in the final weeks of the season last year as they

head into their second season in the USA South. Covenant won three of its final four games of the regular season a

year ago to finish the year 8-17 overall and 4-12 in conference play.

“It’s good to have a year of being in the USA South under our belts,” Harris said. “Last week of last year we found

our confidence and I hope that carries over this season.”

Harris will have to begin a rebuilding project this year. Covenant lost four starters off last year’s team, including

forward Jessie Blankenship who finished 12th in the program for career scoring and fourth all-time in rebounding.

What the Scots do return is a point guard in senior Morgan Woodward who has played in all but four games

through her first three years. Woodward, from Acworth, Georgia, made 24 starts last season and played 31.8

minutes per game while scoring 7.2 points and dishing out just a hair under three assists per contest.

“Morgan has shared the point guard job the last three years, but this year she will shoulder more responsibility as

the main point guard and team leader,” Harris said. “She has a great work ethic that we’ve benefitted from and that

younger players can model.”

The only other senior on the roster is Kiersten Nielsen. Her career at Covenant has been riddled with injuries, but

Nielsen was able to play in a career-high 14 games last season and Harris believes she is healthy and ready to make

a significant impact this season.

“I’m excited about Kiersten. She is a smart player with a very high basketball IQ and she wants to make the most

out of her senior year,” Harris said.

Liz Dougherty and Haley Soles are the two juniors on the roster. Dougherty, a native of Plantation, Florida, has

played in 48 career games through her first two years and brings energy, especially to the defensive side. Soles,

from Athens, Georgia, was a GSAC All-Freshman honoree in her rookie season, but did not play last year until the

second semester. Soles averaged 4.8 points in 17 games last year.

“Liz has a great work ethic as well and we want her to grow offensively,” Harris said of Dougherty. “Haley is looking

comfortable on the court and has been good in practice and wants to improve upon last season.”

Two of the three sophomores are returners as Rachel Price (Sale Creek, Tennessee) and Alex Quimby (Denver,

Colorado) come back. Caroline Cone (Altamonte Springs, Florida) is a first-year player. Price is one of the taller

players on the team, listed at 5-foot-9, and Harris expects her to take on a bigger role against opponents’ post

players.

Harris’ recruiting class brought in three players: Jessica Bell (Coral Springs, Florida), Abbey Bailey (Burnsville,

North Carolina) and Clara Dirkse (Elgin, Illinois). Bell is the younger sister of Robby Bell, a sophomore for the men’s

basketball team.

“Our recruiting class brought depth this year.” Harris said. “The freshmen have the ability to play multiple positions

on both ends of the court. Each one will be needed to play quality minutes this season and will get valuable game

experience early on.”

After the Scots host Oglethorpe, they will be away from Barnes PE Center until Dec. 9 when Sewanee comes in

followed by a visit from Berry on Dec. 13. USA South play opens on the road at Ferrum, the defending conference

champion, on Jan. 2.

Alumni Perspective “Playing basketball at Covenant for four years was truly a privilege, blessing, and so much fun! The relationships I established with my coaches and teammates remain more than 10 years later. Not only was my time at Covenant an enjoyable athletic and academic experience, through competition, training, and studying, I learned lifelong lessons about accountability, adversity, victory, perseverance, working hard toward a common goal, the value of Christian community, and God’s unrelenting faithfulness despite my brokenness. I have seen God use these principles years later in my pursuit as a wife, adventure as a mother, and journey as a Christ follower. My experience at Covenant was invalu-able in shaping my priorities, my view of the world, and my role in it.

While at Covenant I majored in Pre-Med Biology and minored in Spanish and Chemistry. After graduating in 2002, I married my high school sweetheart and fellow Covenant College alum, Rich Everett. I attended graduate school at Vanderbilt University where I completed my Master of Science in Nursing (MSN)/Family Nurse Practitioner degree. To-day I am blessed to be the Mommy of Anna, Jackson, and Katelyn and also work as a Family Nurse Practitioner in Castle Rock, Colorado.”

- Kristyn Everett was named to the conference All-Academic Team three times during her Covenant College playing career and is ranked 3rd in career 3-pointers.

“The people at Covenant were what brought me there more than any other reason. I just loved the people up on that mountain and that was very important to me, especially since I was going off to college so far from home (I’m from Denver). My teammates made the experience for me and we had such a blast together. Many of us still stay in touch and try to play at least once a year.

I believe Covenant prepared me extremely well for life after college. After graduation, I went on to Florida State to pursue a Master’s Degree in Sport Administration. While at FSU, I had the privilege of working as a graduate assistant for the women’s basketball team. That opportunity has opened many doors, including my current position as Assistant Women’s Basketball Coach at Mercer University. I am extremely thankful for my Covenant education and all the people who poured into me and made that possible.”

- Joanna Reitz graduated from Covenant summa cum laude in 2006 after scoring 1,557 career points.

30 WOMEN’S BASKETBALL MEDIA GUIDE 2014-15 COVENANT COLLEGE

Under first year head coach Sarah Harris, the Covenant women’s basketball team had its ups and downs in the 2013-14 season but ended the year on a high note.

Covenant completed its first season in the USA South Athletic Conference with an 8-17 overall record, but won three of its final four games to complete the year.

Once again, the Scots were led by Jessie Blanken-ship. The senior from Lexington, S.C., finished her career with 1,362 points, 12th-best in school history, and 797 rebounds, fourth all-time in program history. She is only one of four players in program history to record at least that many points and rebounds.

This season, Blankenship averaged 12.8 points and nine rebounds per game en route to being selected to the All-USA South third team. She registered a double-double in each of the first nine USA South contests and had 12 on the year. Blankenship tied a program record with 22 rebounds in a game against William Peace on January 22. Off the court, Blankenship earned her sec-ond straight CoSIDA Academic All-District honor.

Covenant started the year with a 72-60 victory at Berry, the first win over the Vikings in program history. The Scots added two more wins over Sewanee and Oglethorpe before Thanksgiving Break.

The Scots got two USA South wins in January and lost their first three contests in February before getting back to winning ways later in the month. Covenant knocked off former conference foe Agnes Scott and then upset Huntingdon and LaGrange at home to end the season. The LaGrange contest, on Senior Day, came down to the final seconds when senior Kiaira Cooper made a driving layup to seal the win.

Sophomore Alexis Storteboom had another solid sea-son as she averaged nine points and 7.2 rebounds per game. Newcomer Aleigha Williams produced 9.5 points, second-best on the team, to go along with 4.7 rebounds per game. Cooper finished her career scoring 7.3 points and dishing out 2.8 assists. Junior Morgan Woodward led the team with 2.9 assists per game.

The team was honored with the USA South Sports-manship award for women’s basketball, as voted on by their peers in the conference.

Covenant will lose seniors Blankenship and Cooper, but will look to return several key contributors next sea-son. Sophomores Liz Dougherty and Haley Soles along with freshmen Rachel Price, Alex Quimby and Rose Doyle all saw significant playing time in 2013-14.

Parents/Boosters/Alumni/FansAre you a Booster?

A booster is an individual that:

• Promotes Covenant athletics program.• Makes a financial contribution to Covenant athletics or its booster organizations.• Assists in the recruitment of prospects for Covenant.• Provides benefits (e.g., jobs, occasional meals) to enrolled student-athletes.Once a booster.....Always a booster. It is important to remember that once an individual has been identified as a booster, he or she retains that status forever.

If you have questions whether you are considered a booster of Covenant Athletics or if you have questions about what you may or may not do as a booster, please feel free to contact the Compliance Office at [email protected].

What is an extra benefit?

Fans and boosters may not provide anything to prospects or currently enrolled student-athletes (or their families) without prior approval from the Compliance Office. If a student-athlete and/or his or her family accepts any benefits of special consideration (e.g., transportation, clothing, money, meals, etc.) based on his or her athletic skill, the student-athlete will lose his or her eligibility and Covenant will be subject to NCAA penalties.

Extra benefits can include, but, are not limited to:

• Money, gifts, clothing, tickets for entertainment, haircut, and use of a car.• Free or reduced-cost room or board anywhere.• Free or reduced-cost merchandise or services.• Use of Athletics Department copy/fax machines, long distance telephone services or free use of a cell phone.• Typing or editing reports, papers, letters, etc. for a student-athlete.• A loan of money or the consigning of a note to arrange a loan.• The sale or trade of complimentary admissions for merchandise, services or debt repayment.• The sale or trade of ANY items a student-athlete has received for his or her participation in athletics (e.g., gear, clothing, awards). This list is not exhaustive. Please refrain from offering prospects and/or current student-athletes and their families and friends anything that is not available to all students or the general public.

Any questions or concerns should be directed to:
