He received his B.A. in Economics from Brown University, M.A. and Ph.D. in History from University of Chicago. His research has focused on U.S.-Japan diplomatic, political and economic relations, and U.S.-East Asia relations. He is the author of Unfinished Business: Ayukawa Yoshisuke and U.S.-Japan Relations, 1937-1953 (Harvard University Asia Center, 2003), winner of the Masayoshi Ohira Memorial Prize, and Ayukawa Yoshisuke and Economic Internationalism (in Japanese, Nagoya University Press, 2012), winner of the Suntory Prize (Politics and Economics Field) and the 2013 Forum for Entrepreneurial Studies Book Prize in Japan. During the 2014-15 academic year, he will examine the new threats and comprehensive national security in U.S.-Japan relations. She has also served in the General Affairs Division and Safety Management and Seafarers Labour Division, both at the Maritime Bureau. Ms. Iizuka's research at Harvard will examine international governance and competition in the Northern Sea Route.
