On the Cover: Born at 23 weeks and weighing less than a pound, Drayton Brindisi, Connecticut Children’s 2015 Champion Child, had a 15 percent chance of surviving and only a 3 percent chance of surviving without profound neurological problems. Yet, he fought, grew and went home after five months and five days, weighing 8 pounds.

Inside Cover: Dressed as the Hulk, 5-year-old Josiah Mulero of Hartford joins his favorite crime fighters for a photo on National Superhero Day at Connecticut Children’s on April 28. The hospital-wide event featured costumed window washers, as well as life-sized models provided by LEGO, a Dave & Buster’s obstacle course, Monaco Ford’s Batmobile and cape decorating with Hole in the Wall Gang Camp.

The medical staff at

Connecticut Children’s

is at the forefront of the

latest pediatric research

and surgical advances.

So while the entire staff

works tirelessly to give

Connecticut’s children

the care they deserve,

we are also working on

the advances that will

make a brighter future

for families and children

throughout the region.

Message from the President

A Leader in Children’s Health, a Leader in Our CommunitySince our inception as Connecticut Children’s nearly twenty years

ago, our Medical Center has been recognized as a national leader in

providing quality care to children ranging from newborns to young

adults. In recent years, this endorsement of the care we provide has

extended to our efforts to promote child wellness, as we strive to

keep kids healthy long before they walk through our doors.

The medical staff at Connecticut Children’s is at the forefront of the

latest pediatric research and surgical advances. The types of advances

that help great kids like our former NICU patient Drayton Brindisi

continue to beat the odds. So while our entire staff works tirelessly

to give all children the care they deserve, we all recognize we could

not succeed without the help of the communities that we serve.

Access to advanced medical care is as necessary for quality of

life as public schools, safe streets, transportation, public utilities,

and police protection. Like all hospitals in our state, Connecticut

Children’s is a critical asset and a necessity for families from every

corner of Connecticut and beyond. And each year, our criticality

rises as we expand our geographical presence to care for more and

more children.

We are pleased to meet this need, in large part due to the

generous support we receive from our friends, donors and business

partners in the community. On behalf of everyone at Connecticut

Children’s, I thank you from the bottom of my heart. As we go

forward, I ask that you continue to partner with us until we achieve

our ultimate vision; to make the children of Connecticut the

healthiest in the nation. We are well on our way.

Sincerely,

Martin J. Gavin

President and Chief Executive Officer

Connecticut Children’s Medical Center

If you ask six-year-old Drayton Brindisi a

question, be prepared for a long answer. This

happy, talkative young man has an energy and

natural enthusiasm that charms and delights

those who know him. But life for Drayton

began in crisis.

Drayton and his twin brother, Phoenix, were

born almost 4 months premature. At twenty-

three weeks and 3 days, weighing just 15

ounces each, the brothers were given just a

fifteen percent chance of survival - and only

a three percent chance of surviving without

profound neurological impairments. “Drayton

was extremely small, even among other

underweight babies,” said James Hagadorn,

MD, MS, of Connecticut Children’s Neonatal

Intensive Care Unit (NICU).

Drayton survived the first critical days, but sadly

Phoenix died from a pulmonary hemorrhage

3 days after birth. “Babies are simply not

supposed to survive outside their mothers at

such an early stage of development. Eyes aren’t

ready for light and lungs are not prepared to

process air. As we strive to compensate clinically

for underdeveloped organs, we are confronted

with a myriad of complicating factors. But

Beating the odds and happy to do it.

5

babies are born with a strong will to live and

are often much stronger than they look,” said

Dr. Hagadorn.

“In the earliest days, Drayton had very thin

skin and could not be held. We could only give

him ‘premie hugs,’ putting our hands around

the top of his head and bottoms of his feet,”

said Drayton’s mother Heather Brindisi. “He

spent several weeks in an incubator to maintain

optimal temperature, sound and oxygen levels.

Because his eyes were underdeveloped he

needed shades to protect his eyes from the

light. He was so tiny that placing an IV was

not possible and he needed to have a long-

term IV installed surgically. In the early days it

was such a roller coaster ride and there was

so much to take in. But the medical staff at

Connecticut Children’s always took the time to

explain problems and procedures. That made a

tremendous difference for us.”

Drayton’s father, Andrew, added, “Drayton

needed a series of other surgeries to keep him

going. A PDA ligation was needed to close a

flap near his heart that bypasses the lungs in the

womb. Typically, this flap closes on its own at

birth. Then there was laser surgery to help stop

retinopathy of prematurity in Drayton’s eyes.

His underdeveloped retinas had blood vessels

growing irregularly which could cause long-

term damage. Drayton had to have two large

bilateral hernias repaired. While the doctors were

repairing the hernias they found that Drayton’s

intestines were aligned opposite the normal

direction. And then, because Drayton did not

have the strength of a typical baby to feed, a

gastronomy tube was placed in his stomach to

allow tube feedings. And all of these surgeries

were performed when Drayton was less than a

foot long. Truly amazing.”

Drayton’s mother continued, “Our Drayton has

overcome such enormous odds and obstacles. It is

truly a miracle to us. How can we possibly thank

the doctors and nurses at Connecticut Children’s?

We got so close to the nursing staff especially. We

stop back to visit when we have appointments

and sometimes even when we don’t.

“Drayton is an extremely outgoing and social

kid. He’s doing very well in school, especially

in spelling, math and reading fluency. He

rides horses to help build core strength and

confidence. He also loves music and art. In fact,

playing the piano is critical to increasing strength

and dexterity in his fingers and hands.”

Heather concludes with a smile, “Drayton has

a lot of work ahead of him, but he’s already

beaten so many odds. He wants to be a doctor

when he grows up. And with all the wonderful

medical staff he’s met in his young life, who

could blame him?”
