theoretical aspects

Greases for use in roller and slide bearings are non-fluidlubricants made from mineral or synthetic oil andthickeners. Additional solid lubricants and additives areallowed to be used (DIN 51 825).

A solid or semi-fluid lubricant consisting of a thickeningagent in a liquid lubricant. Other ingredients impartingspecial properties may be included. (ASTM)

Greases are lubricating oils which - thanks to thickeners -are not running away. (No official standard)

=> Main difference compared to oils is the thickener. It is responsible for the consistency of greases as well for different properties!

calcium soap (anhydrous): −> 100°C, usable for thermally les s stressed bearings

sodium soap: −> 100°C, no use in presence of humidity or wat er

lithium soap: −> 140°C, multipurpose greases

calcium complex soap: −> 150°C, greases for thermally stress ed bearings

lithium complex soap: −> 160°C; high temperatures; very w ork-stable

calc. sulf. complex soap: −> 180°C; high mechanical stabilt y; water resistant

Base oils and viscosity significantly influence the properties of greases concerning ageing, high temperature behaviour, low temperature behaviour, pumpability, compatibility to elastomers !!!
