Our financial results will likely not be as strong as we had hoped because there has been such an abundance of rain that it has impacted play considerably. Even with that, when there was a short respite from the downpour for one Saturday, the course was full! People were wet and soggy but golfing and smiling! This would not have happened without management’s careful attention to: course rules that make sense like opening for play unless absolutely impossible; improving drainage so that areas like the 9 th fairway no longer flood; paving the cart paths so that the course can be opened on a “cart path only” basis; and putting matts on the driving range for wet conditions. Member feedback has been extremely positive about the appearance of the newly paved and expanded parking lot. The improvement in appearance as one drives into the Club is remarkable and really gives the feeling that it is a prestige private Club as the vision statement suggests. It is important to note that this major expenditure was funded through operations. With the support of members and careful financial management, smaller scale improvements to the Club can be undertaken without taking on debt. Every time a member supports the club and brings guests to golf, dine or enjoy the social events, revenues increase and management is better able to undertake improvements. Member support not only provides for overdue capital improvements but operation- al improvements as well. Based on member feedback via surveys, management has aggressively focussed on improved course conditions and greens and a quality management team who in turn have recruited and trained more qualified and motivated staff. This has resulted in very positive feedback from members who have experi- enced the difference in service levels. To move further along this trend of ongoing improvement, the Board is continuing its strategic planning process with a focus on 4 strategic objectives: Private Golf Club Experience; Optimize Existing Facilities; 12 month Programs & Services; Membership Growth. Ideally, the latter will come as a result of improvements in the first three. While it is not desirable for a prestige private club to advertise for general membership (somewhat di- minishes the notion of “prestigious”) the reality is that growth of membership numbers is required for future sustainability - especially in the area of juniors, graduates and women. The General Manager’s report identified the latest initiative to solicit expert guidance for the development of a Bunker Improvement Plan. This will be an important and costly initiative to enhance the private golf club ex- perience and one which we have determined should only be undertaken using external expert advisors. In or- der to obtain member input for the other strategic objectives, Greg Dukart and I intend to hold a series of focus groups involving a wide variety of members to assist with identification of initiatives. The idea of the focus groups is to brainstorm and obtain input from individuals who represent the wide demographic of our member- ship: men, women, seniors and graduates – not to make decisions. In order to really understand what is best for the Club, the perspectives of all groups must be understood so that decisions can be made in the best inter- est of the club’s long term sustainability. Here’s hoping for more summer-like conditions in July and August and great golf! Please feel free to contact me by email ([email protected]) or phone (306-751-0581) if you have any questions, concerns or feedback. It is my pleasure to serve as the President of The Wascana and your feedback is most appreciated.

Message from the General Manager

Many members have commented about our plans to improve our sand bunkers. Commencing in 2010 we have either repaired or renovated some 31 bunkers. These bunkers were found to a series of issues including no drains, no exit drains, crushed drainage systems, heaved drainage systems, plugged drains, and existing drains not at the lowest part of bunker to name but a few. There are still a further 28 sand bunkers in need of repairs. Additionally it is important to note the impact irrigation systems have on sand bunker playability. For the most part our greenside irrigation heads are positioned to not only irrigate the green but the area approximately 25 yards around the green. It is within this area that most of our sand bunkers are positioned. Between excessive rain and essential irrigation to greens often these greenside bunkers wash out and erode. The erosion creates situations whereby the cavity of our sand bunkers, which is largely native clay soil, is then mixed into the bunker sand when restoring the washout. Over time contaminated sand then can plug the drainage system. In the short term it might be easy to add significant amounts of sand to these sand bunkers to improve playabil-ity. However this will not provide a longer term solution and essentially thousands of dollars yearly could easily be thrown away. This then lead to discussion on the need for sand bunkers as well as appropriate location, appearance and artis-tic style to wetlands brand as well as costs associated to maintain to an acceptable standard. It is largely from this background that the board of directors have instructed me to develop and then to send out a Request for Proposal (RFP) from qualified and experienced parties to provide golf course architectural bunker design services. The purpose of the RFP is to review all of the existing bunkers, make recommendations that will improve playability and may reduce course maintenance costs. This includes recommendations for bunkers in need of modification, removal or converted to grass. Additionally irrigation concerns are to be included. At the end of the day we are seeking a long term strategic plan for our sand bunkers. One that can be followed and adhered to for the long term for our club. The RFP was distributed to over 20 National and accredited individuals and Companies in June this year. We are anticipating having a completed plan by this fall. We thank all members for your understanding while this important process is undertaken. Should you have any questions do not hesitate to be in contact with me. Greg N. Dukart, General Manager

Ladies Canada Day

Canada Day sponsored by The Wascana Women's Executive and hosted by Team Tuesday was a success despite the conditions of the course. 60 women slogged their way around the course and enjoyed friendship, golf and a wonderful lunch. Golfers were dressed in red and white showing their Canada pride. Michelle Inglis captained her team members Linda Huber, Lorraine Hardy, and Jean Cameron to victory. The committee would like to thank the Women's executive, Dave Pettigrew of Harvard Western for golf balls, Michelle Inglis for the skills prizes and the co-captains for door prizes. Special thanks also must go to Ann Hamilton for the challenges of managing the draw, the staff under Dean Manz and Leah Christie did a fabulous job of looking after the tournament and Maija Salmon for her photographic genius. See you all for Canada Day 2015! Carie and Karen

History Notes

The Wascana Junior Program Past and Present As said by Julie Folk in Wascana at 100, “ Gord Staseson's legacy at the Wascana is so closely linked with the Junior Program that the two segments could be written together.” His accomplishments in business, sports and charitable endeavours are quite simply superb and too numerous to list in this short space. His accomplishment in shaping and nearly singlehandedly running the Junior program over an ex-tended period of time is just as impressive. He started by video-taping each junior participant in the Wascana Junior Golf Classic on the first tee at the Wascana and replaying the entire video at the closing dinner. He would organize the entire program, which included the regular junior schedule, interclub tournaments, mixers, barbecues, football games and of course the Wascana Junior Classic which drew entrants from all over the province and was arguably the best Junior tournament in Saskatchewan. Gord was always proud of the girls section of the Junior program and the Wascana is the only club in Canada to boast four consecutive female junior captains – Shannon McGeady, Allix Schweitzer, Julie Folk and Megan Meredith. The many junior golfers who passed through the program over the years could not have had a better role model than Gord. As Ben Wilson said – “Mr. Staseson was like a father or a grandfather to all of us.” The extraordinary legacy left by Gord is being more than capably carried on by our Associate Professional, Todd Zado. The Wascana Country Club Junior Golf Academy is flourishing. The programs offered by the Academy are many and first rate. They consist of One Day Camps, Two Day Camps, Three Day Camps, One Week Camps, Junior Girls Academy Day Camps, Group Lessons, Individual Lessons and Season Long Coaching. Particulars of these programs can be found at the Wascana website under Golf Course-Golf Academy-Junior Instruction and is available to children of members and non-members. Todd has been in charge of the Junior Program for five years and last year over 400 juniors participated in the various camps and lessons. The excellence of our Junior Program from Gord through Todd bodes well for many of the junior members becoming intermediate and regular members of the Wascana. Congratulations to you both. Message From the Women of the Wascana

Happy Canada Day and happy summer! Although Mother Nature has been less than cooperative, we continue to make use of the course during whatever respites that she provides. The Women’s Executive is pleased to announce Marg Elliott One-Day Golf Camp for Girls camp on July 20th from 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm. The camp will include time on the driving range and short game area covering the full swing, chipping, putting and sand play. This camp is free of charge to the first 16 girls who sign up. Please see Todd in the Pro-Shop for more information. This camp was made possible from the proceeds from the raffle at the Women’s Opening Dinner which were collected in recognition of Marg who was a great advocate of women’s golf. As well as being a long time member of the Wascana Golf Club, Marg was, among other achievements, one of the Wascana’s Ladies Club Champions.

Please check the communication hub. Greg has posted a clarification of a rule regarding rakes in the sand traps which has been raised a number of times. The answer may be different than what you expect.

Wascana Mixed League Circle Thursday July 17th on your calendar. That will the third outing of the Mixed Golf League. Last month twenty six couples enjoyed a beautiful prairie evening, nine holes of golf, and a surprise sampling of a local beer - Mus Knuckel brewed by District Brewing of Regina. This was followed by a darned fine buffet. We were delighted to have Jim and Sandy Werschler and Greg Most from Boston Pizza as our Sponsor hosts and they contributed to an appreciated expanded prize list for the golfers. Roger Brandvold and Carm Giblett at Connor Clark and Lunn are sponsoring July's Event. Roger knows some folks with the Riders so the 17th will have a Rider theme – it will be a rare two sport themed afternoon! No, there will be no field goal kicking contests. Details on the League, the golf, and the Event on the 17th can be obtained by emailing [email protected] . We certainly encourage existing Club and newer members to enjoy this not-too-competitive golf in a easy going and fun social setting.
