Dear Pony Finals Competitors and Guests:
On behalf of the United States Equestrian Federation, I welcome you to the 2013 US Hunter Pony Championship presented by Sallee Horse Vans, as well as, the US Pony Medal Finals, and the US National Pony Jumper Championships. These championship competitions are known collectively as the US Pony Finals which has become the country’s most celebrated and prestigious pony event. We are delighted to welcome both returning and new competitors.
The Pony Finals has an extensive history dating back to 1959, and has grown each year into the wonderful competition we enjoy today. Held annually at the prestigious Kentucky Horse Park, the US Pony Finals hosts a truly unique col-lection of ponies and their young riders, trainers, and supportive parents. While the qualifying alone is a prize for most competitors, once they have made it into competition, the number of young pony riders and the families that support them foster a lifelong love of this great sport of equestrian.
It would not be possible to host these championships without our sponsors and
supporters, to whom we are extremely grateful for their continued support. Only through their generosity and valuable contributions are we able to present this incredible event.
We especially thank all of the volunteers, staff and officials who work tirelessly
to ensure that this event is fair, safe, and memorable for everyone involved.Good luck to all the competitors, and have a great time!
Best regards,
Chrystine J. TauberUSEF President

Sportsman’s C H A R T E R
That sport is something done for the fun of doing
it and that it ceases to be a sport when it becomes a
business only, something done for what there is in it;
That amateurism is something of the heart and
spirit - not a matter of exact technical qualifications;
That good manners of sport are fundamentally important;
That the code must be strictly upheld;
That the whole structure of sport is not only
preserved from the absurdity of undue impor-
tance, but is justified by a kind of romance which
animates it, and by the positive virtues of courage,
patience, good temper, and unselfishness which
are demanded by the code;
That the exploitation of sport for profit alone kills
the spirit and retains only the husk and semblance
of the thing;
That the qualities of frankness, courage, and sin-
cerity which mark the good sportsman in private
life shall mark the discussions of his interests at a
competition.
Sport is something done for the fun of doing it and that it ceases to be a sport when it becomes a business only, something done for what there is in it.

History O F P O N Y F I N A L S
In 1959, the British National Pony Society challenged American Pony riders under age 17 to an International Pony Hunter Competition. First held at the prestigious National Horse Show in New York City, the best U.S. ponies
and riders met head-to-head with the best British ponies and riders in the small and large divisions.
The first competition emphasized conformation and under saddle performance. Jumping ability was tested over two fences and counted for 20 percent of the final score. The American riders in this inaugural competition were narrowly defeated 10-9. Two years later, the British National Pony Society hosted the competition. The American competitors prepared by spending a rigorous two weeks at the famed U.S. Equestrian Center in Gladstone, NJ. The training proved beneficial, as the U.S. returned with the trophy by a score of 13-9.
In 1967 the United States Equestrian Federa-tion (formally AHSA) created the Pony Finals as a national event, open to all members of the USEF who met the qualifying criteria. The current criteria specifies that a pony must win a championship in an “A” rated Regular Hunter Pony section, three reserve chamionships in “A” rated Regular Hunter Pony sec-tion or a championship or reserve championship in
an “AA” rated Hunter Pony section. A Green Hunter pony may qualify by winning a championship or reserve championship in an “A” or “AA” rated Green Hunter pony section.
Since 1984, the finals have included the popular Pony Medal Championships, an equitation competi-tion. Riders qualify for the equitation finals by winning a blue ribbon or by accumulating 30 points in an US Pony Medal qualifying class. The 2001 US Pony Finals marked the addition of the National Pony Jumper Championships. Ponies and riders qualify by being one of the top four-rider/pony combinations in their zone with the highest national points in the qualifying period.
Today the US Pony Finals Championships are the most prestigious and celebrated events of their kind in the United States. The Hunter Pony is a three-phase competition judging the pony’s conformation, way of moving under saddle and fence jumping ability. The Pony Medal Championships test young riders in a head-to-head competition judging their ability to com-pete over a technical and demanding course of fences.
This six-day championship event hosts more than 500 young riders and their talented mounts as well as interested spectators and families.

Lauren congratulations on qualifying for the USEF Pony Finals this year in the Green Large
Pony Hunters and in the Pony Medal! We are so proud of you and Benny!
You two have come so far as a team and accomplished so much. All of your hard work and determination over
the last five years has led you and Ben here to compete with the best of the best. It is truly an honor just to qualify and be invited to compete
against such great company.
Though I know that there will be many ponies here with bigger pedigrees than Ben, no one could
ever have a bigger heart! Just remember to reach for the stars and follow your dreams. Anything is
possible if you believe in yourself! Good luck, have fun and try your best.
You guys will always be champions in our hearts!

HQC is an outstanding program that encourages today’s young equestrians to become more than just riders, but horsemen as well. At the Emerging Athletes Program (Nationals) it was clear to me that the HQC Finals were extremely organized and provided an informative experience that everyone involved enjoyed.
