People at KRISS

KRISS’s reputation relies upon its great people and excellent experts. Approximately 400 KRISS people work at

its 500,147 square meter site in Daejeon. The researchers are grouped into four divisions for R&D, four

divisions for Service & Management. Each division is made up of specialized centers and dedicated to

improving its measurement capabilities and services.

R&D Activities

Since its establishment in 1975, KRISS has participated in a wide range of research and development projects

relating to national standards, as well as measurement science and technology, to meet the demands of

industry. According to the funding sources, current R&D projects can be categorized into:● Basic research projects funded by the government contribution;● Contracted research projects with Ministries of Government, including the Ministry of Education,

Science and Technology, the Ministry of Knowledge Economy, and the Ministry of Environment;● Contracted research projects with other governmental agencies and industries.

The Center for Photometry and Radiometry is responsible for the realization and dissemination of two SI units:the Candela for luminous intensity and the Kelvin for temperature above silver point. The Center for Photometryand Radiometry is working to realize and disseminate photometric and radiometric quantities based on anabsolute cryogenic radiometer and a blackbody source. The Center is also working on colorimetry, fiber opticand display-related metrology. The expected impact is to:● Develop advanced metrology to accurately measure the 3-dimensional figures of emerging

nanostructured devices;● Develop new measuring techniques and standards that are essential to analyze the material properties of

nanoscale devices;● Meet the advanced metrology needs of domestic measuring equipment and emerging nanomanufacturing

The center’s tasks include:● Development of measurement technology for the 3-dimensional nanostructures of the emerging

nanodevices;● Development of convergence technology including visualization, nanomanipulation, and nanomachining

The Division of Convergence Technology works on research that enables convergence of cutting-edgetechnologies. The division also supports creative initiatives that apply novel methods to extend the boundariesof present-day metrology. KRISS selected the Center for Brain and Cognition Measurement and Nano-BioConvergence as World Class Lab (WCL) in 2010 and 2011, respectively because of their pursuit of research ofthe highest excellence. In addition, the Center for Quantum Measurement Science introduces one creativeproject led by a junior scientist. The Center for Medical Metrology is setting up a national calibration system forbasic medical instruments and developing emerging medical techniques.

The Brain and Cognition Measurement Center is responsible for developing novel biomagneticmeasurement techniques and their applications aiming to establish a new measurement standard. Basedon the SQUID and atomic magnetometer sensor technology, the center has been developing ultra-low fieldnuclear magnetic resonance imaging (ULF-MRI) technology and next generation magnetoencephalography(MEG) systems. The ULF-MRI can be applied to high-contrast tumor detection, open surgical MRI, foodinspection, explosive detection, fuel cell study, protein/bio-chemical structure researches, etc. With maturetechniques of MEG, the center is conducting clinical brain diagnoses and high-order cognitive studiesincluding pre-surgical brain mapping, epileptic focus localization, bilateral eye movement, the effectivenessof educational stuffs, and etc. Recently, the center opened a new research area, "biomagnetic resonance",which could be utilized to develop new medical modalities visualizing brain functional connectivity orlocalizing cardiac reentry.

The Center for Environmental Measurement Services leads the improvements of accuracy and confidence in thefield of environmental measuring laboratories by providing reliable measurement standards for industries. Thecenter develops and provides advanced environmental measurement technology on demand. The center verifiesperformance test of environmental monitoring instruments based on “the Act of environment test andinspection”, and offer technology services for maintenance of the National ambient air monitoring systems, andverification of the reliability of analytical instruments of nuclear power plants.

The National Center for Standard Reference Data (NCSRD) plays an important role at the national level forthe development, evaluation, and dissemination of standard reference data that are certified throughcritical evaluation processes according to the framework act on national standards and the basic plan fornational standards. Currently, there are 21 nationwide data centers covering specific areas.

How to get off in Daejeon When you arrive in Daejeon (that is, when you pass through the expressway tollgate), get off at the stopin front of the previously Lotte Daedeok Hotel (at present this is part of Mokwon University). MEMO

Sundial, AngbuilguIn Korea, the first public sundial was invented during the reign of King Sejongin 1434. The hemispherical sundial is known as the “upside-down cauldronsundial” because of its shape but its correct name is Angbuilgu.

On the inside surface of the depression are 13 horizontal lines running acrossthe vertical hour lines. They indicate the 24 fortnightly periods, including thesummer and winter solstices. The shadow of the style, oriented toward theNorth Pole, shows the hour and seasonal subdivisions.The zero position ofthis sun dial was calibrated by compass so that accurate time indication waspossible.

The original is designated as Treasure Number 845.
