Dear Educators:

Welcome to the 2013-14 school year. The political, economic, and

educational landscape in Wisconsin has changed significantly; at

CESA 8 we are responding with enhanced services.

This document, the CESA 8 Professional Development Plan for 2013-14,

is one example of those enhanced services. High quality integrated

professional development is an essential investment in realizing our mutual

goal of creating students who are engaged, ready, and successful 21st

century learners.

The professional development offerings we have created are researched-

based best practices that are designed to support the transformation being

asked of us as educators. We are truly excited to partner with our 27

communities; we are confident you will find this new approach to

professional development an amazing tool for supporting your local

improvement initiatives. As always, we welcome feedback from all

stakeholders so that our services can continually improve.

Tools ● Data ● Technology 22-23

Technology can do great things to increase productivity and improve student engagement, IF you know how to use it. These workshops focus on the use of data rich resources such as the School Report Card, WISEDash, Progress Monitoring tools and others. Specific technology skill building sessions will also be offered. The newly formed CESA 8 Technology Coaches’ Network will influence this work.

Mentoring 24-25

The four after school support seminars, for new and veteran educators, include the following topics: classroom management, assessment strategies, technology integration, and PDPs.

Students ● Parents ● Community 26

Crisis Intervention 27

Leadership ● Governance 28-29

The rapid pace of change in education has heightened the need for clear leadership with a laser-like focus on implementation. Rather than go it alone, you can learn from your colleagues. To address the need to collaborate, there will be separate network series for the following groups: Superintendents, Principals, Curriculum Directors/District Assessment Coordinators, Title I Coordinators, and Special Education Directors.

Grading and Homework Practices that Motivate Learning

December 2, 2013 9:00 AM – 3:30 PM

CESA 8 Office

“If you wanted to make just one change that would immediately reduce student failure rates, then the most effective place to start would be challenging prevailing grading practices.”- (Doug Reeves, Education Leadership, February 2008) Participants will confront the research on ineffective grading practices such as using zeroes, averaging all scores, and using a single semester killer grade. Then participants will explore more effective practices such as equivalent grading scales, and accurate, specific and timely feedback.

Presenter: CIA Department Audience: Middle school and high school teachers/principals Cost: $50.00 per participant for Curriculum Instruction and Assessment member

school districts. $100.00 per participant for all other school districts.

Connecting Common Core Standards & the IEP

September 30, 2013 9:00AM – 3:30PM

The Plaza Hotel & Suites Wausau, WI

OR

October 30, 2013 9:00 AM – 3:30PM

CESA 8 Office

The premise of an IEP connected with standards is to ensure that each student’s IEP meeting includes a discussion of what ALL students at a specific grade level should “know and be able to do” in academic content areas during the IEP meeting. In the traditional development of an IEP, educators concentrate on identifying the child’s current skills and the next developmental skills the student needs to achieve. Often the discussion is unrelated to the academic learning expectations for other students at the same grade level. The result is that the child’s goals may not be directly related to learning expectations for students at his/her grade level. The outcome for the student is lower expectations and an increasing achievement gap over successive years in school. This presentation will provide an overview of connecting standards to IEPs to ensure access to the general curriculum for students with disabilities. The information will assist the IEP team in developing a meaningful IEP that incorporates the new Common Core Curriculum, Wisconsin Model Early Learning Standards, Wisconsin Extended Grade Band Standards and local district benchmarks to help meet the student’s unique academic learning needs. Audience: Teachers

Re-Drawing the Lines Neurodiversity: A Compass to a Changing World September 13, 2013 8:30 AM – 12:00PM

CESA 8 Office

Welcome to a new world, where the good kid doesn't sit still. A world where some of the smartest kids in the class don't read well or don't read at all. A world where the popular kids don't make eye contact, don't shake hands, and definitely don't back slap. In this world, these kids enjoy academic success and personal fulfillment at places like the MIT Media Lab and MET High School in Providence, Rhode Island, one of the top charter schools in the country. Then, they go on to run companies in Silicon Valley, New York and Tokyo.

In this lecture, Jonathan takes the audience to life in high schools organized around the principles of video gaming and visual culture. He transports the audience to snow-bound strip malls in Sweden where a software design company has decided to only hire people with Asperger's syndrome-not as charity, but because this company believes programmers with Asperger's make superior employees.

PBIS Administrative Overview (AS50) October 8, 2013

9:00 AM – 12:00 PM CESA 8 Office

Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS) is a proactive and preventive multi-tiered system of support for behavior content. Through the development and implementation of a PBIS framework, schools are able to create and maintain safe and effective learning environments, and ensure that all students have the social/emotional/behavioral skills needed to succeed in school and beyond. We’re Not Broken: Empowering Labeled Students September 12, 2013 5:30PM – 7:30PM

CESA 8 Office

“We’re Not Broken” is a powerful presentation that supports parents in celebrating the strengths, gifts, and talents of their exceptional child.

Research shows that self-esteem is essential to students’ success. However our culture, schools, and medical community conceptualize people with disabilities as inherently broken and medically defective. To empower students with disabilities, parents can understand disability as a social construct, not a medical condition.

In this presentation, Jonathan tells parents what’s right about their children and instills ideas to change social perceptions. He coaches parents to help teachers and school administrators realize their labeled students’ assets.

Jonathan outlines a four-step strategy that all parents can implement to radically change their child’s educational experience. He helps parents build students’ resiliency, meta-cognition, leadership skills, and self-advocacy. He also explains how asset-based approaches fit into IEP settings, school-to-work transitions, and in building partnerships with schools and other institutions. Cost: FREE Audience: Parents, Students

The application process is also explained.
