Effectiveness Coaches’ Network Group

Personalized Learning Day 1 – Staging for Commitment

February 20, 2014 8:30 AM – 3:30 PM

This session will hone in on the critical pieces to understanding the work that will take place under

the Personalized Learning Action Network. It will focus on the readiness, commitment, and

preparation needed to create an effective action network and launch your efforts to personalize

learning for your students. This full-day workshop will address:

Overview of the work to gain a shared understanding of personalized learning

Network role, levels of engagements, norms of operation

Readiness tool - diagnosis

Innovation paths - based on a district's culture and situation

Analysis of video examples of personalized learning

Overview of research supporting the work

This session can be useful whether you know you are committed to personalized learning and the

action network or if you are still unsure. After this session, expect to have the clarity needed to make

a decision regarding moving forward with an action network focused on personalized learning. This

session is critical to have a shared understanding of the Action Network and the vision of

personalized learning. This will be the basis of the collaborative work of the Network. The Action

Network will help accelerate results and scaling - even at different points, we can all benefit from

learning from each other.

Attendance: District teams made up of a core group of the Superintendent, 1 or 2 key district

office administrators, 1 or 2 key principals & teacher leaders.

Using the QEI to Write Your PDP February 20, 2014

Online This workshop will introduce you to QEI, an electronic platform, where you can create, edit, and

Personalized Learning

Day 2 – Project Preparation and Design Session March 20, 2014

8:30 AM – 3:30 PM

CESA 8 Office – Aspen/Birch Rooms

This first part of this day will delve deeper into the steps and process of designing personalized

learning. Participants will engage in activities around the Design Principles and team thinking on entry

points to leverage. Deeper information will be provided on the implications of technology and

personalization for 21st century learners. Developing Learner’s Profiles and strategies for fostering

independence of learners will also be examined. The second part of the day will provide “hands-on”

time to design and plan, whether initially planning a project, evaluating or redesigning. Staff will be

on-hand for coaching and support as the team plans and designs their work for the year.

Districts in the past have found this time to be useful to get work done: uninterrupted time away from

your district with staff available to coach and support!

Attendance: District and/or school teams that will discuss, plan or review a project related to the

Personalized Learning Initiative.

The Next Generation Science Standards Part 1

April 3, 2014

This session is an overview of the shifts and changes in the NGSS standards. Learn what they mean

for your own teaching K-12, and how you can navigate infusing them into your instruction.

PBIS Tier 2 – Day 2 (S200)

The school PBIS team, including administrator and coaches, participate in these four training days

which consists of intense, interactive activity-based preparation for implementation of tier 2 PBIS.

These are guided team work days to begin developing and refining the systems, data, and practices

necessary for sustainable tier 2 implementation.

Audience: Building-level tier 2 team that includes: Building administrator, external and internal

coaches, regular education representatives, special education representative, social

worker and/or psychologist. Target group size: six members.

Cost: Tier 2 training day 2 was included in the tier 2 building team registration fee.

course will help educators and administrators develop skills to lead through coaching models in their

range fidelity of school change.

PBIS Coaches/Administrators Training - C100 May 28, 2014

Network with other coaches and discuss perceived and realistic roles of coaching, review the PBIS coaching role, and become acquainted with PBIS assessment tools. Coaches will identify three strengths and three areas that need improvement in their school-wide plan based on their SAS report and create an ongoing action plan to be utilized with the universal team during tier 1 universal training:

Exploring Expository Literacy: Increasing Academic Rigor through Critical Reading and Written Responses for Grades 7-10

specific strategies to develop critical reading and written response to expository text including:

using structured note-taking to distinguish among central ideas, main ideas and supporting details

utilizing close reading scaffolds to annotate expository text

differentiating between paraphrasing and summarizing and using explicit instruction techniques to

Creating Quality Written Responses:

Responding to Narrative, Expository and Persuasive Text for Grades 5-10 April 9, 2014 - 9:00 AM - 3:00 PM

The 21st century learner must be able to think critically about text and create quality written responses to text

dependent questions from all modes of writing. Next year, the Smarter Balanced Assessment will assess our students’ abilities to construct written responses using specific evidence from text through both listening and text

comprehension.

In this workshop, participants will receive a packet of materials that can be used in the classroom and explore

specific strategies to develop written responses to narrative, expository and persuasive text including:

learning organizational scaffolds for teaching to students to create quality written responses

exploring a variety of short texts and text dependent questions to understand how to support our students

in understanding the academic language used in the questions

using close reading techniques to locate evidence in text to support responses

utilizing summarizing strategies for varying text structures

Teaching vocabulary is a key component of the Common Core State Standards. Helping our students “own” the

vocabulary is critical to their achievement on assessments and their success in career and college. Education and memory research reveal several vocabulary exercises that help students retain vocabulary.

In this workshop, participants will receive a packet of materials that can be used in the classroom and learn how

to identify vocabulary for explicit instruction and explore specific research supported vocabulary activities to

help students build their listening, speaking, reading and writing vocabularies, including:

Current research on vocabulary instruction involving tier two words, indirect and direct instruction,

multiple exposures, structural analysis, context clues, and using resources

Strategies such as semantic and mind mapping, word art, right/left brain definitions, context mapping,

educational institutions and non-profits.

Are you thinking about purchasing an iPad and want to learn more about it, or do you have one and want to

put it to better use? Is your iPad just an expensive toy to play solitaire on? If so this workshop is for you.

Whether you are a newbie to iPads or a veteran user join us to learn how to make the iPad indispensable in

your life. We will spend a great deal of time going through the many, many settings. What are they? What do

they do? Should I change them…or not?

Are you using the iPad in your classroom…with children? Is security an issue? What about organization,

how can you find all of your apps? These questions and many more will be answered.

Then we will delve into the apps that came with your iPad. Is there enough to use in your classroom without

Self-advocacy means speaking up for oneself. It requires knowledge of personal strengths and

needs known to others. Self-advocacy includes the following essential components: 1. Knowledge of

self; 2. Knowledge of rights; 3. Communication; 4. Leadership During this seminar participants will explore a self-advocacy curriculum that helps students become

self-advocates and discover their potential. All participants will receive a copy of the “Becoming a

Nonviolent Crisis Intervention Training

A potentially violent situation is an unsettling situation for everyone involved. The person who has “acted out”

may run the gamut of emotions from fear to embarrassment. The person who attempts to intervene is subjected

to tremendous stress and fear for his/her own personal safety.

Nonviolent Crisis Intervention Training will teach you how to prevent an emotionally and physically

threatening situation from escalating out of control. The training will teach you practical techniques to help you

defuse and explosive situation and feel confident about it. The NCI techniques emphasize both the staff person

and the acting out person. NCI only recommends physical restraint when all verbal and paraverbal techniques

have been exhausted.
