Tourists visiting Boston can still enjoy most of the city’s famous historical sites despite a tempo-rary shutdown of the federal government, but according to a local expert, a drawn-out halt wouldn’t bode well for the local tourism economy.
“One of the main reasons people come to Boston and Cambridge is because of histor-ical tourism. There is no ques-tion that national parks and facilities play a significant role in people’s decision to visit,” said Pat Moscaritolo, president and CEO of the Greater Boston Convention and Visitors Bu-reau. “If weeks go by and the federal government still hasn’t opened, that could be a real problem.”
But less than one full day into the shutdown, which began at midnight Tuesday, things were not looking so bad for local tourist attractions.
Just two of the Freedom Trail’s 16 sites are closed — the USS Constitution and Bunker Hill Monument in Charles-town — but many tourists, particularly people visiting from outside the U.S., may be discouraged from visiting Bos-ton during the shutdown due to the assumption that more spots will be closed.
“There is a lot of confusion, for sure,” Moscaritolo said. “It’s the number one story on na-
tional television. I think people think the whole U.S. govern-ment is shut down, that every-thing has just stopped. People are still trying to make sense of what is closed and what’s not.”
The shutdown thwarted plans to visit the USS Constitu-tion for two tourists from Bir-mingham, Ala., who asked that their names be withheld.
“Maybe we will float by and try to see inside the gates,” one of the visitors said as she stood outside the Boston Tea Party Museum.
Nearby, two Australians who are in the process of mov-ing to Boston were getting to
know the city while avoiding areas that would be affected by the shutdown.
“We figured we’d just wait until the shutdown ends,” one said. When asked what he thought of the shutdown as a foreigner, he indicated it was a bit confounding.
“It’s strange, is what I’d say. I don’t want to be offensive, but it’s definitely strange.”

MBTA crime. Suspects in Blue Line attack turn themselves in to police Three men turned themselves in at Transit Police headquar-ters yesterday in connection with a Sept. 18 attack on a father and his 14-year-old daughter on the Blue Line.
The father was punched in the head multiple times by four men, police said, and the girl was punched in the thigh. It began when one of
the suspects spilled beer on the father, causing an argu-ment. Three men are being questioned by investigators, and a fourth suspect has been identified.
No charges were filed as of press time, but a transit of-ficial said he anticipates that the men will be “brought into the court system.” METRO Two of the four suspects accused in the beating are pictured. / TRANSIT POLICE

Lawrence father Edwin Mieses is in a coma and has been left paralyzed after a road rage inci-dent in New York City, accord-ing to his wife.
Police said the incident be-gan Sunday when the driver of a black Range Rover became surrounded by a group of mo-torcyclists on the West Side Highway as the bikers headed to Times Square. When one of the bikers stopped quickly, he collided with the Range Rover.
The bikers were upset about the incident and confronted the driver, according to police, and attempted to slash his tires.
The driver, 33-year-old Alexian Lian, whose wife and 2-year-old daughter were also in the car, drove his SUV through the group, injuring some bikers along the way, including Mie-ses. The incident was recorded on one of the bikers’ helmet cameras.

Red Line car bathed in Jet Blue ad
For the first time ever, an advertiser has blanketed the entire interior of an MBTA subway car.
JetBlue paid $55,000 to have panels installed on a Red Line car’s ceiling, doors and walls, according to T Spokesman Joe Pesaturo.
The ads were installed over the weekend and will remain in the car until the end of the month.
The transit agency typi-cally gets $1,600 for specific
spaces designated for ads, Pesaturo said, but will “ab-solutely” continue to make
the interior wrap option available to maximize ad revenue. METRO

Funding bills
White House rejects latest GOP off er to end shutdown The White House yesterday rejected a plan floated by Republican leaders in the House of Representatives to reopen some shuttered federal agencies by passing small, individual funding bills for them.
The plan was presented to rank-and-file House Republicans at a meeting in the Capitol.
The White House did not take long to reject the offer.
The proposal “shows the utter lack of serious-ness that we’re seeing from Republicans,” White House spokesman Jay Carney said.
“If they want to open the government, they should open the govern-ment, and then we can negotiate about how we fund our budget priorities in the future,” Carney told reporters.
Information
Government shutdown slows fl ow of data to a trickleA partial government shutdown began to delay the release of data on the world’s largest economy yesterday, leaving policymakers and investors in a fog.
From crop yields to un-employment figures, many
of the nation’s most closely watched data will not be pub-lished during the shutdown.
The Bureau of Economic Analysis shut down its website overnight and failed to issue a report on con-struction spending that was supposed to be released at 10 a.m. yesterday.
The Bureau of Labor Statistics, which was sched-uled to publish the nation’s employment report for
September on Friday, said it would not issue anything until government operations resumed.
“During the shutdown pe-riod, BLS will not collect data, issue reports, or respond to public inquiries,” the agency said. “Updates to the site will start again when the federal government resumes opera-tions. Revised schedules will be issued as they become available.”
President Barack Obama yes-terday blamed Republicans for an “ideological crusade” aimed at his health care program and urged lawmakers to vote to keep government operations running and to raise the na-tion’s borrowing cap without conditions.
“They’ve shut down the government over an ideologi-cal crusade to deny affordable health insurance to millions of Americans,” he said in remarks
in the White House Rose Gar-den.
“Many Representatives have made it clear that had they been allowed by Speaker [John] Boehner to take a simple up
or down vote on keeping gov-ernment open with no strings attached, enough votes from both parties would have kept the American people’s govern-ment open and operating,” he said.
“Congress, generally, has to stop governing by crisis,” he added. “I’m not going to al-low anybody to drag the good name of the United States of America just to refight a settled election or extract ideological demands.”
A debt default that would re-sult if Congress fails to raise the debt ceiling when it is reached in less than three weeks could be devastating, Obama said.
The threat of default in 2011 resulted in a painful debt rating downgrade, he noted. REUTERS
Plan . Obama also warns the GOP not to use the debt ceiling as leverage to reverse the health care law.

Technical glitches stalled yes-terday’s launch of new insur-ance exchanges at the heart of President Barack Obama’s health-care reform law, a slow start that could fuel the politi-cal debate over providing mil-lions of uninsured Americans with coverage.
The administration went ahead with opening day for a six-month enrollment period on the state marketplaces, or exchanges, despite a partial federal government shut-down precipitated by Republi-can opposition to the health-care law that deadlocked a spending bill in Congress.
The law will provide subsi-dized health insurance based
on income through the new exchanges in 50 states and expand Medicaid coverage for the poor, representing the most ambitious U.S. social pro-gram since Medicare launched in the 1960s.
State-run exchanges were mixed, with users in Connect-icut, Rhode Island and Cali-fornia able to create profiles. REUTERS

2 Great Wall of WTF?
Justin Bieber has been on such a single-minded campaign to convince us all that he’s no longer a little girl and is now, in fact, a very adult man that recently it seems like the kid might have self-actualized himself into a geriatric.
At least, that’s the only reason I can come up with to explain why the hell the little guy needed to be carried the length of the Great Wall of China. (Double spoiler alert: It’s, like, a really long wall.)
On Monday, photos sur-faced on the Interwebz of the Biebs being carried up one of
wonders of the modern world upon the shoulders of two actual adult men (bodyguards, prob). What, they couldn’t find a douchebag-sized papoose?
I honestly don’t know who I’m more disgusted with — Bieber for being such an egre-gious tool that he would make his bodyguards carry him up a monument like the boy prince of freaking Siam, those body-guards for not quitting on the spot and also pushing him into a puddle or something on their way out, or myself for writing about it. But, hey, that’s my job. #nodisrespecttobenaffleck

Hey Don Jon, #thatsracist , maybe When I first saw a HuffPo article titled “Italian American Watchdog Group Accuses ‘Don Jon,’ Joseph Gordon-Levitt Of ‘Racist Stereotypes’” I initially read it as “rapist stereotypes.”
And my interest was im-mediately piqued. (Cue the angry reader letters explaining to me that rape is not a joke. I know! Just hear me out.)
My interest was piqued because “Don Jon” is a movie about a dude so addicted to porn he can’t maintain a normal sex life. So I was kind of eager to read about the parallels this group had drawn between zambonis who watch a lot of porn and rapists. (Ha ha ha see what I did there? “Zamboni” is a racially stereo-typical name. Cue the angry reader letters explaining that one to me. My last name is Cavallo, btw, just saying.)
Anyway, this coalition — who also called for boycotts of
“The Jersey Shore” when that was a Thing — do not like the way that Joseph Gordon-Levitt portrays the Italian-American, Jersey-based characters in his new movie. But, come on. One, that’s what they are — characters. And two, people like that exist, and what of it?
(I grew up on Long Island, btw, just saying.)
All that said, I’m more concerned with the bad Jersey accent Scarlett Johansson is working in the film’s trailers. Someone should take her to task for THAT, no? (Cue the angry letters from ScarJo fans.)
I mean, he’s playing a guido. And so what?
Talking point
T. Swift will ruin ‘The Giver’
I can’t believe we haven’t talked about this yet. And by talked, I mean I haven’t written a rambling, personal diatribe in the guise of “celeb gossip” yet.
But, OK, I can’t be the only person who is upset about this, right? As most of you probably know by now, Taylor Swift has been cast in a film adaptation of Lois Lowry’s iconic YA novel “The Giver.”
So, when I heard that T. Swift — who cannot act (you guys saw “Valentine’s Day,” right? Oh, yeah, uh, me nei-ther) — was cast in this flick, I was SMH dramatically at my laptop.
Especially because the rest of the cast is shaping up to be pretty all right. Jeff Bridges is set to be the title carrier of the world’s pain (and joy, don’t forget that there’s joy in the world too — sometimes I do) and badass Meryl Streep is cast as the village matriarch. Katie Holmes is apparently slated to play Jonas’ mother, which I’m also not psyched about — but hey, she kinda lived the real-life version of a woman brainwashed into believing a totally altered way of life was normal, so that’s kind of like method acting, amirite?
Swift will play Rosemary, the girl training to be Giver before Jonas. At least I can take consolation in already knowing how she fares (spoiler alert: badly). Plus, we know TaySway is no stranger to feelings ravaging a tender soul.

Colin Hanks joins a massive ensemble cast to relive the assassination of JFK and the days that followed in “Park-land,” coming out as the 50th anniversary of the event itself approaches. The film gave Hanks a unique view on his-tory and, as the chief surgeon on duty at Parkland Memorial Hospital that day, a chance to play doctor.
It’s got to be an interesting challenge playing for this kind of historical accuracy. The whole goal of this was to show it as it really was, not to play up the importance in that, “Here’s this incredibly important day that people will talk about for the next century or the next 40 or 50 years.” We were really playing the impor-tance of, “This is happening right now.” The whole point of this film is to look at those moments that have been over-looked, that are not necessar-ily the first thing that people think about when they think about the Kennedy assassina-tion. The stories of the people that were involved — that I call the sort of supporting charac-ters, that were on the periph-ery — they were thrust into a scenario where obviously for the rest of their lives they were thinking about this. So for me, I was really interested in trying to capture that elusive sort of moment in time where you just don’t know what’s going on and you’re just trying to get your bearings. And most of the time you’re failing.
In your research, was there anything you learned that surprised you about the assassination?Well, I mean there’s tons of stuff. The idea that the same doctors were on call when Kennedy and Oswald were brought in, I had no idea. That they even brought them to the same hospital, those kinds of things. Those little moments of history I think are really the most fascinating, and I think are also quite frankly the ones that people gravitate toward. Those little moments, I think, always speak much louder than any of the specifics that you can get into.
You’re shooting in a very confi ned space. Yeah, we had 25 people in a small room. And two of them were holding cameras and there was a boom operator
COLIN HANKS The actor talks about embracing authenticity
in the JFK docudrama “Parkland.”
WHO KILLED THE KENNEDYS?
and that was it. So it was a different way of making the movie, but again we were just focusing on those real mo-ments. It sounds redundant because you always try to do that in any job, but this one was a different kind of acting than what I was used to.

Conspiracy theories
How much discussion was there on the set about the conspiracy theories or the Oliver Stone side of things?None, none. You know, obvi-ously I was only there for a small portion of the fi lming. It was almost like we were making our own diff erent fi lms and we sort of threw them all together. I think the goal and purpose that we had was to be so focused on these three days [that we didn’t] think about anything else. So that was all that we were really focused on.

Family Harmony as a Goal in Estate Planning
By Attorney George Warshaw
ADVERTISEMENT
Last week I posed the question whether an inheritance is a gift or an entitlement and discussed
how you can use your will or trust to encourage personal growth and development in your children.
A similar planning concern is whether in leaving an inheritance you will create family harmony or perpetual discard among your children and their children.
If your children don’t get along now or are not suited to be in business together, don’t force them to be together or do something together later.
For example, let’s say you own a small business and you want to leave it to your two children. If they don’t get along right now, it will only be worse later. You want to avoid in your planning possible personality disputes and bad feelings that will emerge later between them and their children.
Better to leave one of them cash or equivalent value and the other the business, or require the business be sold and the cash divided equally.
I’ve also found that one’s children like to be treated equally and often become resentful that one child inherited more than another or received a great deal more than another during the parent’s lifetime.
So however you decide to handle your estate, do it in a way that makes your family want to get together at Thanksgiving rather than Halloween.

This home at 17 Crest Road in Wayland has two
bedrooms, one bathroom, a living room with a fi replace, a laundry room (including a washer and dryer) and a kitchen with many new appliances. The one room that’s missing is a dining
room, but listing agent Eliza-beth Noonan points out that
the kitchen island off ers a place to perch while eating. Listing price: $284,000. List-
ing agency: RE/MAX Leading Edge. 781-248-9911. www.
When it comes to Metro West homes, you think of big hous-es at big prices beyond many budgets, which is why this little bungalow in Wayland is such a gem. It’s far from spacious, and it doesn’t have architectural significance be-yond being cute. However, it is affordable, and for the busy person who doesn’t want to spend weekends working on their home, it’s easy to main-tain.
“This is the house for first-time home owners, or people moving up from a condo and out of the city,” says listing agent Elizabeth Noonan of RE/MAX Leading Edge in Water-town. “It’s beautiful. You walk in and it’s so peaceful. The current home owner has a stressful job and she says that coming home to this place feels like she’s on vacation.”
“It was the perfect home for her,” Noonan adds. “Dud-ley Pond is across the street; she likes kayaking and could
just walk two minutes to launch her kayak.”
While the price is appeal-ing, the home is less than 900 square feet and there’s no commuter rail nearby. “It does sound small, but it has cathe-dral ceilings and an open-plan
design, so it feels spacious,” says Noonan. “It’s a home for people who drive. It has two parking spaces, one on either side of the house.”
The current owner relo-cated back to her native West Coast, but left little work for any new home owner to do beyond general maintenance. Noonan says it has a new roof, new windows, new paint and many new appliances: “It’s all done. You can move right in.”
That leaves the future owner plenty of time to enjoy what is probably the home’s best feature: a gorgeous land-scaped backyard filled with picturesque blooms.
“The owner’s sister is a landscape architect and de-signed it to be full of flowers year-round, but also not to be a lot of work,” adds Noonan. “It’s an easy yard to maintain.”
Low maintenance, low cost, low stress

Up-and-coming designers launch their careers at Boston Fashion WeekNew talent. The event showcases four local emerging designers.
Despite what many people — ahem, New Yorkers — might say, Boston is not a style-barren wasteland populated entirely by denizens in North Face fleeces and boat shoes.
Boston is a fashionable metropolis in its own right, and while we may not have the concentration of designers and high-end couture to rival Manhattan or Paris, we have our fair share of innovative designers. And many of them are just getting started.
Case in point: the up-and-coming local designers fea-tured in The Launch showcase in this year’s Boston Fashion Week. You can view their designs on display at Copley Place through Oct. 11. We checked in with three of the four designers to talk shop.
Tell us about your design aesthetic.SAMMI YANG (23, WEST ROX-BURY): It’s a mix of day wear and easy evening wear inspired by the dramatic process of intensive sunlight that follows dark and massive storm clouds. Through precise yet feminine tailoring and intricate couture detailing, I recapture the grace and refinement of the 1940s in modern styles.CARLOS VILLAMIL (37, SOMER-VILLE): I approach fashion from
the point of view of the slow fashion movement. I want to create items that are less influenced by trends and more related to experimentation, both in their production and in their aesthetic. I design with “zero waste” in mind. I want to create long-lived garments that have a deep emotional con-nection with the user and are environmentally sound.SASHA THOMAS (27, SOUTHBRIDGE): I have a very bold perspective. I invite my customers to see the world through a darker lens and inspire them to walk the path less traveled. I am all about reinvention. What does fashion, or style, mean to you?CV: I believe fashion is an ex-pression of identity rather than a particular look or style. Each group, each community [re-flects its] idiosyncrasy through many social phenomenons —
and fashion is one of the most visible ones.ST: Fashion, to me, is an unspoken voice that we all possess to tell the world who we are. What we wear speaks volumes to everyone we come in contact with, whether we know them, whether we even speak to them, or if it’s just in passing. What else is there that has that much silent power?
What do you hope to do with this exposure?CV: It is truly amazing to be part of this special group. I appreciate the risk they took when picking me, because I do conceptual fashion and it takes courage and the desire to in-novate, to open the doors and recognize the work of design-ers like me. It’s a tremendous opportunity for exposure and to establish connections, while at the same time it puts a huge responsibility on your shoul-
ders since you have to deliver a solid collection. And it forces you, in a very positive way, to keep going with your project. For more information, visit www.

Q&A
How do you think Boston measures up, fashion-wise, to other cities, like New York?SY: I noticed that New York-ers always wear something to catch others’ attention. However, in Boston, people just dress in their own styles. I would say Boston fashion is more unique.
CV: They are two very diff er-ent cities and, for me, it is dif-fi cult to establish parallels in terms of fashion. The evident element is that New York is one of the cities in the global fashion calendar, while ours is not, and I like to think about Boston as the heir of a wonderful manufacturing and industrial tradition. And, to cite Jay Calderin, I agree with him about thinking that our option to become a bigger player in the fashion world is to take advantage of our education and technolo-gy strengths to create “smart fashion.”

Wellness. We’ve all heard that ubiquitous term by now. Wellness centers are popping up all over—at universities, corporations, hospitals and, literally, street corners all over Boston. But what does the term Wellness mean? How is it different from basic healthcare as usual? What is this new Wellness movement all about?During the past two decades, research amassed at world-renowned medical institutions in Boston and elsewhere suggest that therapies previously considered “fringe” or “alternative”—such as massage, acupuncture, chiropractic, Reiki, Tai Chi, yoga, hypnotherapy, energy therapy, meditation and mindfulness—do in fact make a positive difference in human health and well-being. Many of the world’s leading health experts now view the Wellness industry as a bright new horizon in personal care and an important partner to conventional medical practice, especially in terms of preventing disease. Conventional medical care focuses predominantly on the physical aspects of human health and offers interventions designed to help bodies heal from serious illness or injury. The field of Wellness, on the other hand, focuses on ways we can balance all four levels of human existence—the physical, emotional, mental and spiritual levels. Wellness therapies share one quite simple goal: To help us relax. When we are stressed, our bodies create tension, which is evidenced scientifically by inflammation. This inflammation blocks or decreases the flow of our life force energy (called qi or chi, and pronouced chee), and over time that imbalance can cause damage to each of our basic health-regulating systems—circulatory, immune, digestive, and others. The best science today suggests that many illnesses, including cancer, autoimmune disease, hypertension, and heart disease result from unhealthy inflammation, or stress, in the human body. Recent research at Boston’s Mass General Hospital has shown that stress-induced inflammation can be reduced through simple meditation practice. Wellness therapies such as massage, yoga, meditation and mindfulness derive from ancient healing practices common to all indigenous world cultures and seek to bring the human mind, body, heart and spirit into balance in simple relaxation and enjoyment of the present moment. This inner sense of being, rather than the harsh outer whip of doing that too often drives us, is our best ally in bringing ourselves into balance and robust good health on every level. Sound too good to be true? Then try it! Wellness is the best free medicine there is and you can practice it right now. Wherever you are, simply take a look around you and sense into how you are feeling. Are you aware of yourself and your surroundings or is your mind elsewhere? Is there tension in your body? Are you uncomfortable in some way? Now, consciously gather as much of your awareness as you can and focus on your breath. Slowly, take ten breaths in and out as deeply into your belly as you can. With each out-breath, consciously give yourself permission to relax. If your mind wanders while you do this, no worries, just bring the focus back to your breathing without judgment. Once you have finished the last deep breath, open your eyes and look around you. Notice any differences in how you feel? How does your world appear to you now?Kate Gray, Ed.M. is the founder/CEO of Qi, The Inner Gym, a comprehensive wellness practice located in Back Bay Boston that offers a workout for the rest of us—heart, mind and spirit.

9More than 60 percent of Americans have admitted that they are not sure what is in the new Affordable Care Act, better known as Obamacare, according to Theda Skocpol, professor at Harvard Univer-sity and author of “Health Care Reform and American Politics.” The exchange mar-ketplace is up and running: Don’t be left in the dark. Read up on the new act here.
1Who is eligible for Obamacare?
People who do not receive in-surance from their employers are eligible for Obamacare. People under 26 can stay on their parents’ insurance.
2Where can I sign up? You can browse and
purchase plans on your state’s exchange marketplace online. People will be able to read about the various ben-efits and costs of each plan and “comparison shop the same way they would if they were comparing the price of airline tickets,” says Skocpol. Some states will also allow users to enter their income and sign up for financial assistance.
3How much will plans cost? The costs vary from state
to state, but many people will receive financial aid that offsets the cost. “The tax credits you can get from the government run pretty high,” says Skocpol. “People making
$70-$80,000 will get help from Obamacare.” In the end, most people will pay much less for their insurance than they were before for private insurance plans.
4What are the diff erent plan options?
There are four tiers of plans: bronze, silver, gold and platinum. Bronze plans are the cheapest and offer basic coverage with higher deduct-ibles and copays. Platinum offers more coverage, but at a higher price.
5If bronze is the cheapest, why wouldn’t everyone
get it? Skocpol says purchasing the bronze plan may not be the cheapest choice in the end. It could end up costing more than the other plans, depend-ing on the frequency of your visits to doctors and hospitals. Some people on the bronze
plan may hesitate to see a doc-tor because of the higher de-ductibles: Skocpol and her col-leagues call this the “bronze trap.” Even so, Skocpol says people who choose the bronze plan will be “protected from the things that drive people into bankruptcy.”
6Is it possible I’ll pay more for health care?
Skocpol says that in a few instances, some families who have very inexpensive catastrophic health insur-ance may have to pay more for insurance. However, their coverage will also be much greater with the new plans.
7How long do I have to choose a plan?
Six months. You can sign up for a plan now and get coverage in the new year, but you have until the end of March to sign up for a plan.
8What if I don’t have insurance and I want to
opt out of Obamacare? You can remain uninsured, but you will have to pay a fine of $95 per adult or 1 percent of your family income, whichever is higher.
9What if I have a preexisting condition?
You will still be eligible for health care. The ACA prohibits insurance companies, on and off the exchange, from barring or discriminating against people with pre-existing conditions.

Brought to you by the professionals at Dellaria Salons. This month’s tutorial teaches you how to create volume and style with a simple ponytail. We take the most commonly worn hair style – a ponytail – and add volume to turn it up a notch! This easy to achieve look is extremely flattering and can turn your day to day look into a trendy style you can be proud to rock! Below, Lynne of our Lexington location will walk you through how to achieve this look at home. Make sure you stop by your local Dellaria Salon for all of the best Framesi hair care products!
Start with hair that has been washed & con-ditioned with Framesi Ultra Body Shampoo & Conditioner. This will prepare even the finest hair for this voluminous look. Add Framesi Strong Hold Mousse to wet hair beginning at
the roots, and work through the ends of your hair. Blow dry your hair normally until completely dry, making sure to focus on giving volume and lift to your roots. Follow with a little Framesi BY Mist Spray Light.
Next, section hair into four sections – back; front & crown;
left; and right. Clip each section to separate.
Pull the back section into a ponytail & secure it into place with a hair elastic at your de-sired ponytail height. For extra hold & volume in longer hair, layer two hair elastics on top of each other.
Comb the right side section back , and wrap around the ponytail, securing it into place with a bobby pin. Smooth & spray with Framesi BY Mist Spray Light. Repeat with the left side.
Now to build the volume on top: starting at the front of hairline, take a one inch section
and tease the hair towards the root. Spray with Framesi BY Mist Spray Light, and grab the next one inch section. Tease that into the previously back combed hair. Con-tinue towards the back of the head until you run out of hair, remembering to stop and spray
each section with hairspray.
Gently comb & smooth the hair back – focus-ing on the top layer. Style to desired height & secure with bobby pins. Spray with Framesi Identity Hold Up to smooth away any flyaway pieces. For an extra dose of all over shine, finish with Framesi Identity Shine On.

Metro captures the absurdity of celebrityRe: ‘Katy Perry considered suicide after divorce’ (Metro, Oct. 1) I wanted to let you know how much I look forward to reading “The Word” every morning. Your pitch-perfect take in celebrity gossip brightens what would otherwise be a dreary com-mute to work. I can’t wait to pick up my Metro each day just to read your column. Thank you for doing what you
do with excellence far surpass-ing others in your field. The Katy Perry piece was but one more example that captures the absurdity of celebrity, makes fun of celebrity, but still celebrates celebrity that makes your column so good.GEOFF BUTLER, VIA EMAIL
Don’t mock Katy Perry’s dark thoughtsRe: ‘Katy Perry considered suicide after divorce’ (Metro,
Oct. 1) As a high school teach-er, I am terribly concerned by the message that Dorothy Robinson’s Word article sends to young people and adults alike. How shocking that in 2013, we still have people like Ms. Robinson who are interested in mocking mental illness and suicidal thoughts. Whether or not Katy Perry was actually suicidal or did indeed suffer from mental illness in the form of depres-sion, this article’s judgment sends the wrong message. Responding to someone’s mental health concern with, “like, she must have realized
she would pull through this,” completely disregards the crippling effect of mental illness. While this article may not be keeping Katy Perry up at night, it certainly says to us regular folks that thoughts of suicide are a laughing matter that are under the control of the individual. Shame on Ms. Robinson for her detrimental statement.LAUREN SLATER, VIA EMAIL

Government shutdown could aff ect BC-Army
There’s a chance there may not be football at Chestnut Hill this weekend, as the government shutdown is now affecting college athlet-ics as well.
This Saturday’s sched-uled Army-Boston College game, as well as Air Force-Navy, may not be played due to the Department of Defense temporarily sus-pending sports competition at service academies.
The Defense Depart-ment is looking into whether non-appropriated funds could be used to al-low Army to travel to BC for this weekend’s game.

NFL. Ravens’ Suggs calls out Brady and alleges ‘blackout’ conspiracy There is likely no bigger Patriots basher in the NFL than Ravens linebacker Terrell Suggs, and he was at it again last night in an interview on ESPN’s “E:60” show.

“I don’t like him. He don’t like me,” Suggs said. “I don’t like his hair. I don’t know. I don’t like his smug attitude. But then again he probably doesn’t like my a—hole atti-tude. … Everybody just seems to worship the guy. Not me, though.”

Ten years later, that senti-ment is still held by many, though Kobe Bryant and LeBron James have both made pretty good cases to at least be involved in the “conversation” as greatest ever.
Jordan himself weighed in on things this week, talking about the long list of players he would have liked to have played one-on-one.
“I don’t think I would lose,” Jordan said with a grin in a video promoting the video game NBA 2K14. “Other than to Kobe Bryant because he steals all my moves.”
