Introduction:
STREICHER Group with its headquarters in Deggendorf (Germany) is characterized by its high-quality standards and its outstanding,
innovative technology. 3,500 employees are involved in national and international projects. The pipeline industry, which is one of
STREICHER’s core competences, is characterized by its high risk and hazard compared to stationary production. A crucial factor is the
difficulty for the workers to adapt to ever-changing climatic, topographic and environmental conditions at the changing locations of the
construction site. This requires an increased concentrated attention of every employee in order to prevent possible accidents and incidents.
Even today’s advanced technology and a detailed organization of operating cycles is not enough to prevent safety issues as the accidents are
mainly caused by personal behavior although the staff are very well-trained. That’s why our top management took relevant
steps to enable every single employee to influence his/her own
safety and also the safety of the co-workers on their own
initiative. To achieve this very ambitious goal we had to find an
effective way to improve and strengthen people’s thinking in
terms of safety. We started a comprehensive campaign which
consists of several actions but the major step was to conduct
a WORKSHOP with all employees from all levels under the title
“Safety matters to everyone!”

WORKSHOP – content:
The top management’s message and involvement:
Our managing director, Mr. Maximilian Hofmann, opened the workshop with a presentation about the
importance of safety, STREICHER´s philosophy and its place within the STREICHER Group. He illustrated that
the key philosophy of STREICHER is comparable with a living organism. Everybody is important, everybody is
responsible for the safety of the organism; if one is hurt the whole organism is hurt. By showing impressively
the importance of every single person everybody became aware of their role within the organism and got a
feeling of responsibility for others. Mr. Hofmann revealed the new slogan for the company which indicates that
STREICHER and safety belong strongly together and can’t be torn apart. The new slogan is “WIR SIND
STREICHER” (in English: WE ARE STREICHER / WE ARE SAFE”). By showing that the German word for “SAFE”
(=“SICHER”) is included in the name of the company, the new slogan indicates how important safety is for the
company and that there is no STREICHER without “SICHER”. It shows that everyone is responsible of caring
about safety for oneself and others. It was a clear message to everyone that the managing director delivered
this speech and put everyone on the same level.

WORKSHOP - team working phases:
The entire workshop was facilitated by an occupational psychologist who was
able to steer the different group processes. A special team was recruited
consisting of members from different departments and also client’s
representatives and independent safety experts. We used different group sizes
and different tasks to facilitate group processes with employees from all levels
and to get feedback regarding work safety. It was remarkable how many ideas
came up.

WORKSHOP - Groups of 2:
We started to work in very small groups because such groups are often very productive,
work fast and can communicate a lot of content. The teams of 2 were given the task to
interview each other about the content of the workshop, what they have heard so far,
what they liked and disliked. In this phase we observed vivid exchange, a lot of
positive feedback and enthusiasm for the STREICHER philosophy.
The next task for the groups was to find useful ideas concerning work place safety for
two categories: action proposals and wishes for support. The teams went into a
brainstorming phase, exchanged their ideas and worked very productively. The members
of the groups listened actively to each other, supported, encouraged and developed the
ideas together. It was visible how many ideas came up, how people started to listen
actively and sharpened their senses.

WORKSHOP - Groups of 8:
Groups of 8 had strong group dynamics and group processes going on during the discussion time.
Different members took on different roles, each of different responsibility, but in the end
everyone contributed to the process and the results. We observed a fast, effective distribution of
roles (speaker, moderator, time observer) in the teams. Everybody was aware of his responsibility
within the group. The groups had the task to discuss the ideas found in the groups of two with
each member of the duo groups representing the ideas of the other person, not his/her own. This
required empathy and a feeling of belonging together. It also showed that everyone did care about
the other and the STREICHER philosophy of the organism was strongly supported. The groups
further discussed the different proposals, developed them, combined them and in the end agreed
on one common action proposal and wish for support regarding work safety per group. The
improved skills of listening, communication and team working skills lead to a stronger bonding
between everybody and therefore strengthen the feeling of responsibility.

WORKSHOP - groups of 32:
In groups of 32 there is a lot of potential for communication and exchange. We
experienced that there was a lot of communication about the proposals and the
selected ideas. The bond between everybody got stronger and it was amazing
to see how ambitious everybody was working together to improve the action
proposals and wishes for support regarding work safety. Every layer was
involved, top management worked actively with regular employees and
everyone felt his responsibility for safety. In the end every group worked out
an action proposal and a wish for support regarding work place safety.

WORKSHOP – plenum:
In the end all teams formed the great plenum circle and the speaker for every
group could introduce its action proposals and wishes for support regarding
work safety. Together with the managing director and the occupational
psychologist the employees discussed and further developed the ideas. In the
end different measures were discussed and it was defined how to implement
given proposals. The awareness for work safety was getting stronger and
stronger and the STREICHER philosophy was further strengthened. Everybody
felt responsible for safety and realized that his/her personal contribution is
essential.

All in all we can say that the workshop was an amazing success. We were able to create strong
awareness for safety, trained and developed team working as well as listening skills, showed that
safety is a part of STREICHER and that everybody is responsible as well as highly important when it
comes down to safety.

Spreading of the STREICHER Philosophy
The workshop was the kick-start event to our campaign to increase awareness
and a feeling of responsibility for safety and to advertise the STREICHER
philosophy. To constantly remind our employees about safety we created
posters (see attachment), stickers and mirrors with a safety message on them
to make people aware that safety belongs to STREICHER and that it has to be
constantly present.
Additionally, every participant of the workshop was given a swiss army knife
with the safety slogan on it which serves as a reminder for each person’s
responsibility.

At the end of the workshop we handed out swiss army knives with
the STREICHER slogan “WIR SIND STREICHER” on them to every
single employee.
This tool can be constantly carried around and will remind the
employees that everybody is responsible for safety.
Safety matters to everyone!
Such mirrors are located at construction sites which carry a sticker
that says
“Responsible for safety…”
and the company slogan
“WIR SIND STREICHER” (“safe” = “SICHER”).

Summary:
The request for feedback was very well-received by our employees who seized the
opportunity of direct communication with the top management to give useful ideas and
proposals. This exchange was also welcomed by the management and many helpful
decisions could be made immediately.
Many members of the staff said afterwards that the group work and also the managing
director’s message at the beginning of the workshop really made people think about the
importance of safety and how a change in behavior can make a very big difference for
everybody. A positive influence had obviously happened.
Since the workshop was such a success, we will continue to carry out similar events on
a yearly basis. We want to remind our employees of the significance of safety as well as
of the most valuable gift of the world: healthiness.
