Lion Foundation Young Enterprise Scheme Qualification Pathways Awards and Competitions
There is a national competition and national awards list which all YES student companies are eligible for. The
national competition includes a dragons den presentation, regional co-ordinator mark and business plan review.
All student companies will meet the same criteria for any YES activities, competitions and awards organised
locally by the regional coordinator or nationally by Young Enterprise Trust, regardless of the qualification pathway
being offered.
Assessment
The YES programme can be delivered as a timetabled option or an extracurricular activity. The most common
subject for YES to be delivered under is Business Studies but it is also offered in economics, technology, music,
art or design subjects.
The YES programme provides a framework for assessment that allows for the academic performance of different
groups of students. The programme is aligned with these assessment pathways.
YE Certificate (NZQA recognised)
NZIM paper 836
Business studies achievement standards at levels 2 and/or 3
YE Certificate
Teachers report the YE course requirement outcomes for individual students to Young Enterprise Trust at the
end of the academic year. An electronic teacher master sheet is provided in the teacher resource folder for this.
AUT University mark and report the YE Certificate examination. Young Enterprise Trust collates all results from
the YE Course requirements and exam and sends the appropriate certificate to the school for each student.
NZIM paper 836
Students apply directly to NZIM for credit of the YE Course requirements for NZIM paper 836
Business Studies Internal Achievement Standards These are assessed and reported by the teacher in the
usual way for all standards
Extracurricular - student companies are welcome to participate in YES as an extracurricular activity as long as
they have a teacher or mentor to register and supervise them. The list of YES course requirements for the YE
Certificate shows in red the activities and paperwork recommended for extracurricular students to be successful.
Extracurricular companies can participate in all regional and national events and competitions by completing the
requirements for the dragons den presentation, coordinators mark schedule and annual report requirements
Mentors
Students in all options are encouraged to have a business mentor, or mentors. Consultation with expert advisers
is part of the requirement for achievement standards and is critical for all students as they produce their goods
and services.

Qualifications
1. YE Certificate – 24 credit equivalents at level 3
The YE Certificate is a standalone qualification registered by New Zealand Qualification Authority
(NZQA) at level 3 with a value of 24 credit equivalents. The certificate has two components
a. The Young Enterprise Course Requirements - 10 credit equivalents
b. Young Enterprise exam - 14 credit equivalents
Credit equivalents means that NZQA have assessed the YE Certificate qualification for the nominated
value and level of the NCEA, but these are NOT NCEA credits and will not appear on the student’s
record of learning. They can however be used toward the NCEA if required.
The YE certificate components can be used together or separately toward the NCEA and applied at
levels 2 or 3. Therefore, a student who does not complete the exam is still entitled to 10 credit
equivalents if they complete all of the course requirements OR students with an exam pass only may
claim 14 credit equivalents.
Credit inclusion process
Credit is applied for by the teacher on behalf of the student through NZQA. The application form is
straightforward and an example is in the teacher resource folder for your convenience. NZQA advise
that the credits should only be applied for if the student requires them to “top up” to achieve their NCEA,
so this should be done after the NCEA results are received in January.
The YE certificate is a qualification in its own right with its own value. Please remind students to
keep the certificate safely with their other qualifications should they require it for applications to
tertiary and for their CV.
2. NZIM paper 836
The Young Enterprise Course Requirements entitle students to NZ Institute of Management paper 836,
which is part of the NZIM certificate in Management.
3. Achievement Standards
Teachers can create their own business course assessed through achievements standards, using YES
as the vehicle to deliver standards and to “carry out the business”. Selected standards that fit well with
YES have been identified and resources developed to support these. The “carry out a business”
standards are:
Level 2 AS 90848 - Carry out, review and refine a business activity within a community context with
guidance – 9 credits
Level 3 AS 91384 - Carry out with consultation an innovative, sustainable business activity - 9 credits
4 | P a g e
The following standards also fit well with YES
Level 2
AS 90846 Conduct market research for a new or existing product – 3 credits
Level 3
AS 91382 Develop a marketing plan for a new or existing product – 6 credits
AS 91383Analyse a human resource issue affecting a business – 3 credits
If you are choosing to assess your students through achievement standards, but you are unsure of whether all
students will attain the standard required, keep a record for individual students of the “YE Course requirements”.
Individual students will then be able to fall back on the course requirements if they have completed these and
teachers are satisfied that they have reached the standard required. Also, if students sit and pass the YE exam –
they will have met the requirements for the complete YE Certificate.

Course Requirements
Each individual student is required to show their contribution to written reports, participate in a range of activities,
complete individual reviews and keep their own company records to complete the “YES course requirements”.
The template is used to report on each student’s achievement and is available electronically (teacher’s resource
folder). If the programme is being offered as an extracurricular activity where students are not gaining credits, the
highlighted red tasks are recommended. (In which case 1x copy of documentation per company should be kept
on file)

YE Certificate Course Requirements - Student Review and Evidence Statements
There are two student review and two evidence statements required for Young Enterprise Course requirements.
It is sensible to overview the content with students when introducing the course so that students are aware of
what sort of information to collect as they progress through the experiential programme. A journal is an excellent
tool for students to use to capture their progress and would include tasks completed, meetings, research etc.
While the student review and evidence statements have dates on them, these are a guide. This work remains
with the teacher as part of the individual course assessment for each student toward the Young Enterprise
Course Requirements. As the teacher delivering the programme you can set dates that suit your timetable,
however we recommended that you try not to vary these dates greatly.
The following instructions should be given to students:
All questions are to be answered in full.
All questions must be answered within the context of your Lion Foundation Young Enterprise Company
experience.
These documents are part of the assessment evidence that is required to be collected for the YE
Certificate and/or the NZIM Certificate in Management (Enterprise Option), paper 836
Your school’s re-sit policy applies to this document.

Teacher Accreditation to Deliver the Exam
It is a requirement for delivery of the YE examination that schools have one YE Certificate accredited teacher
at the school. This is different from the professional development training in “Delivery of YES”. Check to see if
there is an accredited YE Certificate teacher in your school. YE Certificate examination accreditation is
provided by Young Enterprise Trust on CD so that you can complete it at your leisure. This can be ordered at
[email protected] by putting YE Exam CD in the subject line. There is also a podcast on exam preparation
from the Chief Examiner at AUT University to play to students..

YES Examination results are declared in late October by the AUT exam board.
Results will then be made available to schools.
