RespiteCare Your Way

Respite is a short break from the ongoing demands of providing care for a family member who has a disability or chronic health condition. Wesway offers respite options that give family caregivers a chance to renew their energy. Respite is a crucial part of the overall support many people need when caring for a family

member at home.

accomodating the strengths, needs and preferences of each family we serve. Respite can take place in the family home or at another location. Respite may also include support for individuals to participate more fully in the life of the community.

FamiliesProviding 24-hour care for someone can be stressful and

Wesway’s roots stretch back tohumble beginnings in 1973.Forty years later, we arecelebrating this vibrantorganization’s extraordinaryhistory of commitment tofamilies. I’m honoured to serveas the new President … And it’sexciting to see Wesway’scontinued growth and

expansion across the vastgeography of NorthwesternOntario.

We are living and working in atransformative period in thehealth and social servicessystems. Dr. Samir Sinha’sreport, “Living Longer, LivingWell” is exhaustive in itsanalysis of seniors’ care andprovides 169 recommendationsto inform Ontario’s SeniorsStrategy. His report begins byoutlining 5 principles: access, equity, choice, value, andquality – all wholeheartedlyembraced by Wesway. Thisreport is a persuasive argumentin favour of transforming ourhealth care system into onethat focuses on community careand the crucial role played byfamily caregivers. Many of theissues covered in the report arecomplex and require carefulimplementation. Through itsHealth Services Blueprint, theNorth West LHIN isspearheading many initiativeswhich align closely with Dr.Sinha’s report throughmechanisms such as Integrated

District Networks, Local HealthHubs and Health Links. Weswayis pleased to participate inmany associated steeringcommittees and working groupswith other health serviceproviders. Momentum isswelling … and Wesway is fullyprimed to continue to build andenhance collaborativerelationships with our partnersthroughout the region.

Wesway is also an activepartner in the transformation ofthe developmental servicessystem, funded by the Ministryof Community and SocialServices. Although details ofthe new investment are not yetavailable, we are pleased thatthe government has identifiedadditional funding to supportindividuals with adevelopmental disability andtheir families. The WeswayBoard continues to beconcerned by the severeshortage of funds for adultswith a disability. Tragically, when children reach the age of18, we are forced to stop theirrespite and their names are

added to a long waiting list forservice. This is oftendevastating news for manyfamilies. As they continuecaring for their adult children athome, these aging parentsneed respite more than ever.We sincerely hope that the newmoney announced by thegovernment will help to addressthe urgent needs of thesefamilies.

Through this publication, I’mdelighted to extend greetingsand best wishes to our friendsthroughout the region. Yoursupport of our work is heart-warming, and we simply couldnot carry on without you. Weare committed to workingdiligently with our sisterorganizations, communitygroups and funders to ‘forgeour future’ in this rapidlychanging environment – whileremaining true to the familieswe serve!

“My daughter Ashley has alwaysbeen playful, outgoing andenergetic,” shares Judy Perrier.“As a little girl, she especially lovedmusic, dance and gymnastics.”Having Down Syndrome definitelydidn’t stop Ashley from activelypursuing her childhood dreams andpassions.

When Ashley was a little older, she began to have breathingdifficulties. Even mild exertioncaused shortness of breath. Sadly,a previously undiagnosed medicalcondition soon brought most ofAshley’s favourite activities to anabrupt halt.

Ashley now has oxygen availableat home. It has become a struggleto find appropriate pastimes forAshley because she requirescaregivers with special skills. Heractivities were modified for herhealth, and her social opportunitiesbecame very limited. She reallymissed the excitement of theactive life she used to lead. Herparents also craved some time forthemselves – like the moments

they used to share when Ashleywas busy.

Ashley and her mom were quitereluctant to start using Wesway’sservice last year. They weren’tsure what to expect. Wesway firstintroduced a Respite Worker,Meaghan, during a visit to theirhome. Ashley was a bit shy at firstbut it wasn’t long before they

became fast friends. The matchwith Meaghan was so successful, the family was eager to makemore connections throughWesway. Along came Rachael, aCommunity Friend volunteer, andJocelyn, a Recreation Therapystudent on placement at Wesway.

Judy says, “I don’t know what we’ddo without our ‘Wesway girls’!Each one comes on a differentevening with special interests andideas to explore with Ashley. Weoften invite them to join us fordinner with our whole familybefore they head out on a specialpre-planned outing.”

Ashley’s week could include yogawith Jocelyn, baking cookies withMeaghan and a shopping trip withRachael. A staunch Shania Twainfan, Ashley and her “Wesway girls”often sing along at the top of theirvoices as they head out for driveor a special treat!

Recently Meaghan moved tosouthern Ontario. However, theycontinue their relationship withemail, facebook and texting – newskills Ashley has mastered sinceplanning her new adventures withWesway!

Mary-Jean Cormier, Former Wesway Board MemberCongratulations! I was so lucky to become involved with Wesway as ateenager. It taught me so much about caring for our community...as ayoung leader on the Board of Directors and as a Community Friend.

Sarah Campbell, Respite WorkerI have worked as a Respite Worker for 2 years and absolutely LOVE myjob. Going to work feels more like spending time with a friend or afamily member. I can't imagine a more rewarding job.

Ashley loves the “adventures” she has with her Respite Worker and volunteer.

My mother has Alzheimer Disease, and I’m her caregiver. Her illness hasprogressed over the years and she

now needs help with all her activitiesof daily living. It can be veryoverwhelming when all the weight is

on your shoulders to provide all thecare. But I know Mom wants to stayat home, so I’m committed tomaking that happen.

I waited two years for respiteservices. Finally in January 2010, Ireceived the long awaited call fromWesway. I was one happy man! Ilooked after Mom for many yearswith very little support. I have myown business, and I really neededsome help so I could work a bitmore, do some of my art projects, and maybe have a little time formyself. It was a relief to know Icould get out of the house for a fewhours and do whatever I wanted.

When I met Wanda, I knewinstantly she was the perfect matchfor my mother. She was kind, gentle, not pushy and very engaged. Mostimportantly, she interactedbeautifully with my mother, and Momresponded positively to Wanda.

Wanda comes in twice a week inthe evening to provide respite. WhenI hear that doorbell ring, I know it’smy time to get away. And I know I’mleaving Mom in the care of awonderful Respite Worker. I go towork and finish jobs that I couldn’totherwise do, or spend some timewith my partner doing things she andI enjoy together.

Occasionally, my mother goes toWesway’s Court Street Respite Homefor a full weekend. She loves itthere! While she’s away on her“vacation”, I am stress free. Noworries! I can get things done. Or Ican just sleep in, if I want to. Forme, this is the best break ever. Ihave complete trust that she is beingcared for just like she would be inher own home.

With Wesway, I’ve been able toplan vacations, something I neverthought I’d be able to do. Two yearsago was the first time in many yearsthat I was away on an extendedvacation (seven days). It wasamazing … like a dream come true!

Right now I’m having somephysical difficulties of my own. Myback has been giving me trouble, soall the lifting has been a realchallenge. Respite gives my back amuch needed break. It’s possible Imight need some surgery in the nearfuture, and I know Wesway will bethere to help my mother and me.

Whenever I need extra support,Wesway has been my lifesaver. Ireally don’t think I’d be able to keepcaring for Mom at home if I didn’thave the respite Wesway offers.

Henry says Wesway has been a life saver for him

Tess Legacy, Respite WorkerWorking for Wesway has expanded my life... I have become anextension of my families, as they have of mine. For that I am verygrateful.

Jenny Taranin, Respite Workerl have been with Wesway for many years… and each year is a newgift to me. l am honoured to meet new families that teach me thetrue meaning of acceptance and love. l'm truly grateful for Wesway.

Our Thanks …Wesway gratefully acknowledges all the families, volunteers, donors and staff who have so graciously agreed to share their verypersonal stories and images in this publication. The truthsexpressed by these ordinary people bring some decidedly extraor-dinary issues to life. The sharing of these personal challenges, joysand tribulations is a compelling way to increase knowledge andunderstanding in our community.

Hello! My name is Kyle Kilgourand I have been working withWesway for over three years. Inthis time I have had theopportunity to know manyexceptional people, and theprivilege of supporting them duringthe parts of life which are bothexciting and joyful, and those thatare challenging or mundane. I amgrateful for all that these peopleteach me, and find satisfaction inknowing that I am helping wherehelp is truly needed.

I was born in Edmonton, raisedin the GTA, and have lived andworked in a good many differentplaces and fields: from teachingEnglish in Ecuador, to guidingcanoe trips in The Rockies, tocleaning beaches in Nova Scotia. My education has likewise been amixed-bag. I spent a number of

years at Lakehead Universitytaking courses in OutdoorRecreation, Ecology, Psychology,Anthropology, Politics, English,Spanish, Indigenous Learning, andWomen’s Studies. I am a couple ofcredits away from a Bachelor ofArts Degree, and I am currentlypursuing studies in the Martial Artsand Alternative Medicine. I havealways been someone who resistslabels, but recently I have found areal sense of satisfaction in callingmyself a Respite Worker.

As a Respite Worker I am calledupon to be creative, to thinkoutside the box, to listenempathetically (even when nowords are being spoken) and to bequick on my toes. I am alsorewarded with the chance toparticipate in the activities mostcherished by others, and to share

my interests too. With Weswayparticipants I have found myselfenjoying many activities which Iwould have never done otherwise:like going to The Thunder BayHistorical Museum, baseballgames, watching Cloudy with aChance of Meatballs, and doingpuzzles! And I too have shared mypassions - like canoeing andbuilding snowmen - with myparticipants.

Respite work is the right fit forme because it is a challenge I canembrace. It is an opportunity tobe creative, to be patient, and tolaugh and learn with others in afun and dynamic environment. Aworking day may require me tohelp someone take a bath, preparea meal, go for a haircut, explorethe community, or play videogames. And that is all fine withme. The variety is wonderful! For me, respite work is aboutmaking meaningful connectionsand sharing real life experiences.

For a three year old, NevaehJohnup leads a very busy life. Sheattends daycare, frequent therapysessions and medical appointments. As the youngest of three children, she is also taken along to the manyextra-curricular activities her oldersiblings are involved in. But Nevaehdoesn’t mind in the least! She lovesthe glamour, fuss and excitementassociated with all that hustle andbustle!

As Nevaeh grows bigger, herhealth and mobility needs arebecoming more challenging. As asingle parent, Nevaeh’s motherColleen is doing everythingpossible to manage the hecticpace. With multiple appointments, she finds herself constantlyplanning, organizing, juggling, andscheduling. It’s increasinglydifficult to manage the acceleratingdemands of her family’s busylifestyle, and still cope witheverything associated withNevaeh’s Cerebral Palsy. Colleen decided to call Wesway. She recognized that she neededsome extra help because ofNevaeh’s special care needs. Shehoped Wesway’s respite servicemight give her more time to devote

to her other children, or perhapsgo shopping or simply spend sometime with family and friends.

With help from Wesway to carefor Nevaeh, Colleen is thrilled to beable to attend the special activitiesand school events of her two olderchildren, and give them the fullattention they deserve.

Sometimes, only Colleen goes outand Wesway provides care for allthree of her children at home. Sheis then able to steal some well-justified time for herself, with theconfidence and peace of mind thatcomes with knowing her childrenare being well-cared for. Othertimes, Colleen creatively usesWesway support to attend eventslike figure skating and dancerecitals with the family, so that she

has an extra set of hands to helpwith prepping the star of the show!

Colleen says, “The service wereceive from Wesway allows ourbusy family to stay activelyinvolved in the community. And Iget the time I need to focus on myother children. It works really wellfor Nevaeh too, because she lovesher special one-on-one time withthe Respite Workers!”

We raise our mugs to Community Support Month!

Andrea Conway, Former President of the Wesway Board of DirectorsI was involved from the mid 70's to early 80's, as Wesway strove to bring an idea to reality. Of greatest significance, from my perspective, was the development of Wesway’s unique philosophy andits determination to meet people’s actual needs. It's heartening to see that Wesway’s commitment has never wavered.

Pat Turner, Family CaregiverWesway has been a tremendous help for our family!

Dictionaries often define Autismas a developmental disorder thatcomplicates the formation ofnormal social relationships, byimpairing the ability tocommunicate with others, and bystereotyped behavior patterns.

Willow Nabigon says that it’s allabout perspective.

Her son Alex was diagnosed withAutism shortly after his fatherpassed away. For Willow, it wasdevastating to cope with therealization that she and Alex wouldhave to deal with this lifelongchange without his father to bethere for him, and the difficultiesAlex might have to endurethroughout his life.

Thanks to the support of Willow’sparents and brother, she was ableto continue her post-secondaryeducation for a short time. Thoseplans changed however, as Alexmore frequently needed hismother’s assistance and support todeal with emotional challenges.

A few years ago Willow’s mothercontacted Wesway to see if theymight be able to assist herdaughter. Willow was soon able touse Wesway’s Family DirectedRespite Funding to hire anindependent worker to help her getthe respite she needed. “I feel veryfortunate to have found someone

very quickly. He is still matchedwith us and it’s worked out great!”Willow shares. She now uses herbreaks to spend some more one onone time with her other children.

As they grow together, Willowsays she learns a great deal moreabout life from Alex than she wouldhave in school. With a beaming

smile, Willow says, “I feel fortunateto have Alex because he hasopened my eyes to his world, andit’s a beautiful place! He remindsme to notice the things that I takefor granted – like sunshine and thesimplicities of life and happiness.”

As for the future, she expresseswith strong resolve, “I havelearned to let go of my oldexpectations. Those expectationshave simply changed and I have tochange with them.” She adds, “Itry to help Alex achieve whatever‘normal’ is for him. I push to helpmake his life as complete aspossible.”

Willow has since remarried, andhas two young daughters. Alex isvery protective of his baby sisters.Willow plans to return to pursuingher post secondary-education in afew years. In the meantime, lifecontinues to evolve. As for Willow,Alex and family, they are creatingtheir own ‘normal’ life.

It’s About Perspective

Willow and Alex enjoy some quality time together

Joanne Schep, Family CaregiverRespite means knowing that your child is in capable hands. There is noneed to worry. As a family, we feel so blessed to have such kind andwilling individuals in our lives.

The year was 1949. The townwas Hornepayne. Gerry Rhodeswent to a fellow worker’s home fordinner. There he met his co-worker’s cousin, Helen. After a fewmore visits, Gerry summoned thecourage to ask Helen on a date.Gerry had no idea the originalchance encounter at his friend’shouse would lead to an enduringbond that would remain steadfastfor decades to come.

Before long, Gerry and Helenrealized they had fallen deeply inlove. In 1951 they were married, and later that year they moved toNipigon. They soon became heavilyinvolved in the community. Afteryears of teaching, Gerry becamethe principal at the elementaryschool. He attended churchregularly with Helen and eventuallybecame a deacon. Gerry alsovolunteered as a Scout leader, treasurer of the local Legion andserved on the school board andtreasurer of the Silver Club. Tokeep in touch with his artistic side,he also sang in the choir andstarted a barber shop quartet. Thetwo love birds also found time to

start a family and had fourchildren.

In May 2003, Helen begannoticing changes in Gerry. He was

always a guy who rememberedabsolutely everything. But hebegan to forget to pick Helen upfrom outings and appointments.Helen also noticed that thingswhich once came easily to Gerrybecame increasingly difficult. In2004, Gerry was diagnosed withFrontal Lobe Dementia. Helen felthopeless and didn’t know where toturn. Helen recalls, “Everyone in

the Nipigon community felt thesame devastation as I did when hewas diagnosed.”

Gerry’s condition continued toworsen over the next few years, and Helen eventually realized sheneeded some assistance. Therewere people in the community whooffered to lend a hand now andthen, out of the kindness of theirhearts. “But it’s really hard to askfor help, especially when it’s anongoing need,” says Helen. Inspeaking with the CCACcoordinator, Helen learned aboutWesway’s Family Directed RespiteFunding. A referral was made toWesway, and Helen was able tohire people she knows and truststo spend time with Gerry. Helenhas health problems of her own,and Wesway’s service enables herto attend her own doctor’sappointments. Her periods ofrespite also made it possible forHelen to resume one of herpassions – volunteering at the localhospital.

These days, Helen tells us she istaking advantage of Wesway’srespite to get her hair done. “Iwant to look pretty for Gerry,” shebeams. There’s a lot of profoundsentiment wrapped in a journeywhich has already spanned 63wonderful, loving celebrations ofValentine’s Day!

It’s in Gloria’s nature to helpothers. She is the family caregiverfor her brother Bill, who has adisability and other health issues.Bill has been living with his sisterfor seventeen years. To say thelast few of those have been achallenge, would be anunderstatement.

“Two years ago Bill collapsed outof the blue. When I saw him on thefloor I didn’t think he was alive.”Gloria remembers that afterrushing him to hospital, doctorsdiscovered four of Bill’s arterieswere blocked. Given their family’shistory of heart problems, it was ascary situation for them. Sherecalls, “I had never flown before, but I had to travel down toHamilton for his surgery. I was sostressed out!”

The term ‘when it rains it pours’took on a sadly literal meaning oneyear later. Gloria remembers thatfateful day in May 2012 like it wasyesterday. “It had been raining a

lot, and I went downstairs to findwater up to my ankles.” Gloria saysof the first signs of trouble. Likemany homeowners in herneighbourhood, the worst was still

to come. “I checked a little laterand realized there was sewage inthe water and it was much deeper. The sump pump had also quit...and that smell! I had to cover thedoor to the basement and thevents, just to keep the horriblestench away.” Their basement wasdestroyed. Her bedroom and Bill’sroom were a total loss. “All of ourfurniture, clothes, even Bill’s pennycollection... everything was gone. Iwas devastated.” Bill also saw thedamage and loss and was veryaffected by it. “He said he wasokay, but I think he was a bitdepressed by it,” Gloria recalls.

Given that their home was inneed of major repair before theycould live there again, Wesway wasable to provide additional CrisisRespite for Gloria through its HostFamily service. Bill was able to staywith his volunteer Host Family fornearly two months while theirhome was repaired. “Thank Godfor Wesway,” she says of that

difficult time, “the house was like awarzone and I didn’t know howlong the restoration would take. Itfelt good to know that Bill wassafe.”

Bill is back at home and thingshave begun to return to normal. He still has regular overnight visitswith his Host Family, and he staysat the Court Street Respite Homesix weekends per year. She hasoften helped people with addictionissues at her home and hopes toreturn to doing that. Gloria hasbeen able to return to using herrespite to just have time alone.“When you look after three people24/7, it feels good to take a little‘me’ time. It’s nice to not have toworry about meals or medicationsfor a couple days.”

Gloria says she’s very gratefulfor Wesway’s service. “I don’tremember when Wesway startedhelping me, but I know they’vebeen there for us when we neededit most!”

When We Needed It Most

Gloria says the extra helpWesway was able to provide dur-ing the flood really helped herand Bill.

When asked why she enjoyedbeing a Wesway Host Family,Linda Vallelonga’s answer issimple: “I’ve always wanted tohelp people!”

When their son David was 16,someone suggested to Linda thatthey could connect with a HostFamily to support David – andLinda thought, “We could do thattoo!” Linda and Naz Vallelongabecame a Host Family for Weswayin 1983. That means 30 years ofservice! Over the years, theVallelongas have supported somany individuals that Linda has ahard time recalling all of themwithout looking up the details. She recalls sometimes having asmany as three individuals in theirhome over a weekend.

One of the things that Linda hasenjoyed about hosting is gettingto know so many different people. She commented, “I loved havingall the guys over – each had adifferent personality and enjoyeddifferent things.”

Their longest match is one thatstarted in 1986 and has continueduntil this year – Jens Nielsen.Jens was just a teen when hestarted his weekly visits with theVallelongas. He has been a partof the family for a long time.Linda says when their friends orfamily come to visit they all knowJens and he knows them. It willbe very difficult, but Linda andNaz have decided that they willretire from hosting this year.

They hope that sharing their storywill encourage others to volunteer– and to find a new match forJens.

Linda talks about her hostingexperience with pleasure. “Whenhosting, you get to know theperson you’re supporting and youget to know the family too. Youget to see how much they needyou and what a difference youmake by hosting. It takes time tolearn about people, what they like

and what they need but it’s allpart of a great experience helpinganother family.”

Linda and Naz are lookingforward to enjoying their“retirement” from hosting – Nazis planning his own retirementfrom work and Linda is busy withtheir grandchildren. They hope todo some travelling and enjoymore time together.

Jens’ mom Shirley says, “Lindaand Naz have always been therefor us, especially during difficulttimes. They’ve been hosting Jenssince he was 16 years old! He isreally at home with them and weare all family now.”

Thirty years of anything is quitean accomplishment – thank youto Linda and Naz for sharing yourtime and your home providingsupport to Wesway families forthree decades. It is generouspeople like you who makeWesway’s volunteer programssuccessful. We couldn’t have doneit without you!

What Have You Been Doing for 30 Years?

Linda hopes that her story will encourage other people tovolunteer with Wesway

Dear Friend of Wesway,

we lived in many places and we were always involved in community activities.

My world fell apart. I began having panic attacks. I cried a lot. I felt alone and lonely. Our good life had ended.

It was at that point that Wesway came into our lives. Respite gave me time for shopping, attending appointments, going to the bank, meeting a friend or just resting. Our Respite Workers are very good to Pat. With Wesway’s help, I found our life began to change. Wesway helped me learn how to cope, to accept the things I could not change and to do things differently.

Our son and daughter live in other parts of the country, but they call us most days and visit as often as they can. I still have sad and lonely times, but I accept that ... and I thank Wesway for all they have done for us.

be generous.
