Welcome to the 2013 Undergraduate Vacation Work and Graduate Employment Handbook.

Engineers Australia was established by Royal Charter as the professional member association for engineers in Australia. Engineers Australia has supported Australias engineers for over 90 years.

To assist with the development and engagement of young engineers in Western Australia, the WA Division of Engineers Australia has compiled this handbook to identify companies that employ engineers and may be able to offer graduate positions or vacation work. The list of companies is not exhaustive and I encourage you to investigate as many opportunities as possible.

Engineers Australia thanks all those companies that have demonstrated their support for the future of engineering in Western Australia by participating in this important initiative.

This handbook also contains information about membership of Engineers Australia and how we can assist you in your career development. Our Chartered program provides a world-class, structured development program to help you plan and prove the professional competency attained in your formative career years.

I hope that the information contained in this handbook assists you in your search for work experience or a graduate position and I wish you all the best in your engineering career.

    Preparing your Application Letter

Application letters should be no more than one page in length.

Address the letter to the person mentioned in the advert, or telephone the organisation and get a name nothing is worse than receiving a letter addressed to the Hiring Manager.

Your opening paragraph should aim to get the readers attention and let them know why you are writing.

Use dot points that relate to items specifically mentioned in the advertisement, or your discussions with them. Be specific about how you match the criteria and the relevance of your experience.

Do not use a general letter, it always looks like it. Your letter should be tailored to the position and the company.

Use language that sounds modern and professional.

Stick to 12 point font and a standard typeface as it is easy to read.

Check your spelling and grammar. Its always a good idea to ask someone else to proof read the letter for you.

Remember to attach a copy of your resume. A copy of your academic transcript and other documentation should only be submitted if specifically requested.

Respond within the time frame given or at least within a week.

Follow up to ensure your application has been received.

Preparing your ResumeThe purpose of a resume is to sell your skills to a potential employer - think of it as a marketing tool rather than a report. It needs to grab the readers attention by demonstrating that you are qualified to do a particular job.

Your resume should be between one and three pages in length.

Use 12-point font. Anything smaller is too hard to read.

Use dot points. They will improve readability and assist you to be brief and concise.

Check for spelling and grammatical errors and it might be a good idea to have someone else check over for you its ideal if you can find someone who works in the industry to which you are applying.

Be honest. Statements made in resumes will be checked in either the interview or with referees.

Avoid initials and jargon - write in plain English.

Dont forget to include out of work interests and hobbies as well as any associations / membership organisations you belong to. Potential employers like to get an idea of the whole person they are going to meet.

The purpose of your resume is to entice the reader to call you and find out more about you and what you have to offer to the company. Its not intended to actually get you the job thats what the interview is for.

If mailing or leaving your resume, use good quality, plain paper.

If emailing your resume, use a common program such as MS Word if it cant be opened easily, it probably wont get read.

    Guidelines for your Interview

ArrangementsConfirm the date, time and location of the interview; plan to get there early. Try and find out the names of the people you will meet and the expected length of the interview.

Research the Organisation and the IndustryThere are a number of sources of information available about companies and industries. Try their Internet site, annual reports and other library resources. Use the information you have gathered during the recruitment process.

Be prepared to talk about yourself

Know what skills you have to offer an employer. Be ready to give examples of how youve demonstrated these skills, rather than a yes/no answer. Be able to identify what the situation was, what you did and what the outcome was. If you dont have much professional work experience, think of examples from your major university projects or social activities.

Take evidence of your work and education with you. Invest in a display book. Dont just have samples / documents loose or in an envelope these documents are a reflection of you and are too precious to lose. You may wish to make copies of the more important ones to be left with the interviewer.

    (Continued from page 6)

Anticipate their questionsHave answers ready for common questions and take out a book from the library of commonly asked interview questions.

AppearanceRemember first impressions count. Your dress for interview should be professional, tidy and leaning towards conservative. Avoid extremes of fashion. Clean your shoes. Dont go overboard with aftershave, perfume or makeup.

    Finally

Smile. Shake hands firmly. Be enthusiastic. Be polite to everyone you have contact with at the organisation. Be punctual. Dont smoke or accept refreshments even if offered as nothing is worse than trying to answer a question with your mouth full! Thank the interviewer for their time. If you are interested in the position, restate your interest and ask about the next step.

Make a follow up call if you havent heard from them in the timeframe discussed.

Other hints Dont lie or exaggerate your abilities; answer questions truthfully and as close to the

    point as possible.

Avoid the appearance of being aggressive, conceited or a know it all.

Make sure your mobile phone is switched off.

Always conduct yourself as if you are determined to get the position that you are discussing.

Greet the interviewer by name and if unsure of the pronunciation, ask the person to repeat their name.

Dont forget about body language or non-verbal communication. Be alert, look people in the eye and maintain a good posture.

Common Interview QuestionsQ. Tell me about yourself?

    A. Dont give your entire life history. If theyre interested in specific personal information they will ask. Start with your degree, mention your work experience, or the key subjects that youve studied.

    Q. What are your strengths?

    A. Identify at least three. You should have some technical strengths as well as skills in generic areas like communication.

    Q. What are your weaknesses?

    A. Have some prepared (two to three). Make them work / personality (not food) related. Try and focus on those youre doing something about, so your answer sounds more positive.

    Q. Why do you wish to work for our organisation? Or What interests you about our products / services?

    A. This is your opportunity to demonstrate your knowledge of the company and the work it is doing.

    Q. What sort of people do you like to work with?

    A. This is looking at your likely fit with existing team members. Focus on positive attributes such as positive, energetic, enthusiastic, committed or competent.

    Q. Tell me about a group project on which youve worked? How did you allocate responsibilities?

    A. This type of question is seeking details about your team skills and leadership ability. If you dont have a lot of work experience, use group projects from university.

    Q. Tell me about a situation that didnt turn out as you expected?

    A. This type of question is designed to see what youve learned from the experience. Outline the situation, your response and why, in retrospect, youd do things differently.

    Q. Do you have any questions?

    A. Try and have one or two prepared, but not on something already covered.
