Welcome by the President

It is my enormous pleasure to invite you to join us in the great melting pot of culture at the interface of Europe and Asia and the equally great melting pot of cartilage research at the interface of basic science, clinical investigation, industrial development and patient rehabilitation.

Many of you will already know the importance of our World Con-gress, held only once every 18 months, providing a unique chance to meet and learn from the world’s best experts in cartilage research and therapy. For those of you who see ICRS as your natural home, we are keen to welcome you back. For those who have rarely or never attended our congresses, please come along and find out what we are all about. We have taken even more care than before to integrate scientific and clinical aspects of each session so that we can all learn from each other.

For those of you who have visited Turkey before you will know what a delightful country it is. For those who have never been before, please come and discover this jewel of a nation. The people are warm and friendly, the climate enticing and the food delicious. If you can extend your stay before or after the congress then you will be able to move seamlessly between modern cartilage science and ancient antiquities, taking some time out in between to do some hard bargaining in a carpet shop or simply to wander along the seashore, enjoying a relaxing mo-ment. Bring your family if you can; you are all in for a treat.

Our scientific committee has done a fantastic job in putting together the pro-gramme, whilst the local organizing committee is working closely with Stephan Seiler from the ICRS office to make sure the venue in Izmir as well as the culture and entertainment are just right for you.

So please mark up your calendars for the 11th World Congress of ICRS. Make yourself at home in our Society by joining us at this great venue and making many new friends and collaborators. I look forward to meeting you in Izmir in Septem-ber 2013.

Welcome from the Local Committee

It is our privilege to invite you to the 11th World Congress of International Cartilage Repair So-ciety – ICRS 2013 to be held in Izmir, Turkey on 15-18 September 2013.

ICRS 2013 will be the event where you will find answers for many important questions

on cartilage. Although many musculoskeletal system related injuries and ill-nesses have been well-defined and classified, advances in preclinical, clinical and industrial research and studies on novel therapeutic approaches are still on going on cartilage related pathologies. We believe that ICRS members, friends and industry partners will share new and exciting developments in clinical and preclinical applications and insights into stem-cell and cellular therapies and related technologies at ICRS 2013. This meeting will promote interdisciplinary education and relations between the clinical professionals and basic scientists.

As Local Organizing Committee we look forward to welcoming you in Izmir, the healing lands of Asclepius since fifth century B.C. Herodotus described Izmir as “the city under the most sublime blue sky with a remarkable climate”. Located on the crossroads of Europe, Asia and the Middle East, as symbol of tolerance and friendship, Izmir of Modern Turkey founded by Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, will also be a scientific bridge between continents.

City of Izmir, named after the Amazon queen Smyrna, in the west of Asia Minor will help you to taste different pleasures during your stay as it has been doing for many civilizations for 8500 years throughout the history. As a port city with all the colours of turquoise to indigo of the Aegean Sea, Izmir is a whole with its land interlaced with the bays, beaches and thermal springs. Izmir will bring you the taste of a rich culinary culture influenced by many civilizations since ancient times and based on healthy eating.

The cultural heritage and natural beauty of Izmir are getting ready to welcome you for the 11th World Congress of ICRS.

Welcome by the Scientific Programme Committee

We have the great pleasure of inviting you to the 11th Word Congress of the International Cartilage Repair Society in Izmir, Turkey in September 2013. This next meeting of our society will provide anoth-er exciting and comprehensive update on the basic science of cartilage as well as clinical research on cartilage injury and cartilage repair. It provides a

wonderful opportunity for basic scientists, surgeons, rehabilitation specialists, and industry partners to share the rapidly advancing knowledge in cartilage biology and regenerative medicine. Besides providing our members and guests with update on the latest developments, a specific goal of the programme committee is to provide a unique forum for interdisciplinary education and to inspire a creative translational exchange between clinical and preclinical scientists in this exciting field. Accordingly, the scien-tific sessions were designed to combine both basic science and clinical aspects of each individual topic to facilitate translational scientific exchange, education, and collabora-tion.

The basic science (preclinical) perspective includes new stem cell and tissue engineer-ing topics, some new research areas (ECM derived scaffolds, lessons from cartilage de-velopment, molecular regulation of repair) as well as world class speakers which will provide in-depth presentations on the specific topics that promise to become the sourc-es for next generation musculoskeletal tissue regeneration and repair technologies.

From a clinical perspective, the most recent, up-to-date information on current treat-ment approaches will be presented as well as emerging clinical technologies and con-cepts that will provide the basis for the future diagnosis of cartilage injury, cartilage restoration and rehabilitation. Specifically, the role of the subchondral bone in cartilage pathology and restoration, immunological aspects of joint injury and function, and new clinical applications of recent tissue engineering approaches, novel biomaterials, and modern molecular biology and cellular technologies for cartilage restoration will be pre-sented. Practical issues like cartilage rehabilitation, lessons from failed cartilage repair, and management of the broad spectrum of cartilage injury and degeneration will be discussed by international clinical leaders. In addition, comprehensive instructional courses and new “Current Concept Lectures” will offer unique learning opportunities from experienced clinical experts on clinically relevant topics. The 11th World Congress is the first ICRS meeting held in the world’s Eastern hemi-sphere bringing state-of-the-art cartilage science and technology closer to the doorstep of many active members and cartilage scientists from Asia, India, and the Middle East. We look forward to an open and stimulating scientific and cultural exchange that will give all participants the opportunity to learn from each other’s unique experiences and approaches to cartilage science and will further promote the active ongoing interna-tional collaboration in our steadily expanding society.

ICRS is going to Smyrna

As Turkey’s third largest city after Is-tanbul and Ankara, Izmir (old Smyrna) is the capital of the Aegean Region and an important center for manufactur-ing, trade and tourism. The city is one of the oldest settlements in the Medi-terranean basin as recent excavations discovered that the establishment of the city dates back to 6500 BC.

Having witnessed 8,500 years of hu-man history, Izmir had been founded at the side of a gulf, and currently is the third biggest city and second most important seaport of Turkey. Situated at the west of Anatolian Peninsula, at the side of Aegean Sea, the prov-ince has an area of 12,012 km2 with an approximate population of 4 mil-lion people. As one of the oldest port cities of the world, Izmir has always been recognized as an important meeting point for people with differ-ent cultures, languages and religions.

Welcome to Izmir – Turkey

Venue LocationSet in 12,000 m2 of landscaped gar-dens overlooking the spectacular Kor-don on the Aegean Sea, the Swissotel Grand Efes Izmir is conveniently locat-ed right in the centre of the commer-cial district and just a few steps away from the heart of the city.

Travel and TransportationAdnan Menderes Airport (ADB) is less than 15 km or 20 minute drive away from the Hotel Swissotel. For more information please visit: www.adnan-menderesairport.com

• Taxi The cost of taxi is of around US$ 28 from the airport to downtown hotels. Arrangements for a private lim-ousine transfer can be made through [email protected]

• Public Transportation Take the Havas Airport Shuttle Bus with a stop right in front of the Hotel Swissotel. The trans-fer time takes around 45 minutes and has a cost of around 6 US$. Time ZoneStandard time zone daylight saving: UTC/GMT +2 hours.Time zone abbreviation: EEST – East-ern European Summer Time

LanguageThe official congress language is Eng-lish. No simultaneous translation will be provided. The official country lan-guage, Turkish, is the first language in the country. However many people in the city centres and resort areas also speak English, to some degree.

ClimateThe Aegean type Mediterranean cli-mate of Izmir can be easily charac-terised by its lengthy, sunny summer months and mild, winter weather. Many tourists favour visiting Izmir during the spring or fall seasons, when the climate is pleasantly warm and dry. Between September and October, temperatures in Izmir regularly exceed 25°C / 76°F and can often top 30°C / 85°F.

Credit Cards / Cash MachinesAll major credit cards are widely ac-cepted. Bank cash machines (ATM) can be found easily and debit cards are also widely used. If you are using a foreign card at a bank machine, your money will be disbursed in Turkish funds. There is also an ATM machine in the lobby of the Swissotel.

CurrencyThe currency in Turkey is Turkish Lira.1 € Euro ≈ 2.30 TL (Date of printing, De-cember 2012)Euros and US dollars are also accepted in many hotels and tourist areas, but you will save money by converting some funds into Turkish liras at one of the many exchange offices or banks in the city. They typically offer competi-tive rates and charge no fees.

TippingService charges are typically not in-cluded in the bills in Turkey. Please add 10 % for restaurants and bars or add 1–5 US$ for a friendly service. This applies to waiters, barbers and hair-dressers, taxi drivers, etc. Tips should rather be given in cash Turkish liras and not be added to the credit card charge on the bills.

Health CareSpecial Vaccinations are not required for entry into Turkey but an individual travel & health insurance is highly rec-ommended because health insurance plans often do not extend full coverage for medical services received outside the country of residence.

Entry Formality / VisaWe strongly recommend that all par-ticipants needing a visa to attend the Congress in Turkey start their applica-tion process as soon as possible by contacting the local Turkish Consu-lates to obtain and follow instructions. http://www.mfa.gov.tr/visa-informa-tion-for-foreigners.en.mfa.
