school is not in session In areas with signifi cant concentrati ons of low-income children
The Summer Food Service Program (SFSP)BACKGROUND
Providing nutriti ous meals to needy children Giving children the food they need to learn, play and grow Helping families stretch their food buying dollar Keeping children mentally engaged so they return to school,
ready to learn A part of the No Kid Hungry Campaign to end childhood
hunger in Colorado by the year 2015
As a SFSP Sponsor, you are:
Two meals per child, per day Any combinati on of two meals may be claimed except lunch and
supper Camps and migrant sites may claim up to 3 meals per day Meals must meet USDA standards Determine the maximum number of children that can be served
at each site
Meal Service
• All children receive a meal meeti ng meal patt ern requirements• Children with dietary disabilities must be accommodated and therefore
may not receive the same meal.• Children eat all meals onsite• All children in att endance are served one meal before second
meals or any adult meals are served• Adhere to local health & sanitati on regulati ons• If meals are served outdoors make arrangements for inclement
weather• Serve meals during ti mes approved by the State Agency• Only camps may serve meals family style• A la carte items may be sold during a meal service
Requirements for Meal Service
If health and food safety codes permit, food donati ons may be made to: Eligible local food banks Charitable organizations

Field Trips
Menu & POS Food Safety Ensure the safety and quality
of the meals by using adequate storage equipment to transport them.
Keep hot foods hot and cold foods cold!
Use a thermometer Wash hands Wear gloves when serving
Field Trip meals must meet SFSP meal patt ern requirements.
The Daily meal count form must be used at the fi eld trip locati on.
Meals must be served during the approved meal service ti me.
Children must be supervised during meal service.
Formal Approval is Not a Federal Requirement

Accurate Point-of-Service Counts are Critical!
It is criti cal that site personnel and monitors understand the importance of accurate point-of service (POS) meal counts. • Use meal count forms• Fill out completely with signature & date.• Meals must be counted at the actual point of service
All parti cipati ng sponsors must inform potenti al parti cipants of the availability of the SFSP
In additi on, all sponsors and their sites are required to: Display “And Justice For All” poster Translation Make program information available to the public upon request;

Include the nondiscriminati on statement, and instructi ons for fi ling a complaint, in their public release and in any program informati on directed to parents of parti cipants and potenti al parti cipants
Ensure that meals are served to all att ending children, regardless of their race, color, nati onal origin, sex, age, or disability
Ensure that all children have equal access to services and faciliti es at the site regardless of race, color, nati onal origin, sex, age or disability

Sponsoring Organizations Must:
Plan your training agendas Provide a sign in sheet with topics and date of training Use USDA manuals Add outside resources for food safety Train all of your staff :

Management Responsibilities
Sponsors may not contract out management responsibiliti es of the program, including but not limited to the following tasks:
Ø Meal orderingØ Offi cial recordkeeping responsibiliti es, including meal count informati on to substanti ate claims
Ø Submitti ng claimsØ Training Ø MonitoringØ Announcing availability of meals to the news mediaØ Determining income eligibility and maintaining individual income eligibility statements
Located in an area where 50%> of the chi ldren are el ig ible for free or reduced-price school mealsReimbursed for al l att ending chi ldren

HOW DOES
THE SFSP WORK IN SUMMER SCHOOL?
If a summer school site is not open to the children of the community and provides meals only to enrolled summer school students, the site is not eligible to participate in the SFSP
If a school is only offering enrichment courses that are not considered part of the academic curriculum and do not require mandatory attendance, the school may be eligible to participate in the SFSP as an open or closed enrolled site
