INFORMATION OBTAINED FROM THE VESTAVIA HILLS POLICE DEPARTMENT

While working in your yard, never leave a lawn mower, weed-eater, hedge trimmer, etc.

unattended. It only takes seconds for a thief to grab and go with these type items. They are

easily pawned or fenced and are difficult to track without model/serial numbers. Take time

now to record and file model, VIN or serial numbers for these items.

While in your yard, keep an eye out for your neighbor, taking note of any unusual vehicle traffic and/or suspicious

persons. Do not hesitate to call us if you think someone doesn’t belong. You know your neighborhood best and

we need your help to keep our City safe.

Lastly, please lock your vehicles and remove or at least conceal any valuables. Most thefts from vehicles

occur when the vehicle is not locked. You greatly reduce your chances of becoming a victim by locking your

doors, especially in a residential setting. Most thieves committing this type of crime in a residential area do so

at night and do not want to break a car window due to the close proximity of neighbors.

Operation Over-Watch is a free, scheduled and confidential public service. Members of the Vestavia Hills Police

& Fire Departments will assist you in addressing vulnerabilities in your home or business by reviewing overall

safety measures, testing alarms, offering fire & crime prevention recommendations and providing a detailed

report reflecting suggestions for your review. The officers will be in plain clothes, the city vehicle will be

unmarked and the review should take less than an hour.

The service is non-invasive and will primarily consist of Q & A and discussion. Our goal as public servants is to

ensure the safety and security of all citizens and visitors in our city. This service will provide insight on how

everyone can do their part.

For more information, please visit our website at www.vestaviaoverwatch.com; www.vestaviahillspolice.com;

find us on facebook; call Lt. Brian Gilham at 205-978-0194 or email him at [email protected].

Check out neighborhood crime mapping data at www.crimereports.com. You can sign up and get alerts.

Please, never hesitate to contact us with any question or concerns. We work for you.

VHPD is committed to safeguard the lives and property of the people we serve, to reduce the incidence and fear of crime, and

to enhance public safety while working with the community to improve their quality of life. Our mandate is to do so with

honor and integrity, while at all times conducting ourselves with the highest ethical standards to maintain public confidence.

The Vestavia Hills Police Department will be holding a forum for Liberty Park

Residents on November 7th at 6:00 pm in the Media Room at the Liberty Park

Middle School. This will be a very informative event so please don’t miss it.

DOGS and their owners’ responsibilities

The Association is still getting tons of complaints regarding residents not cleaning up after their dogs,

especially along the side walks. Please make sure you take bags with you and clean up after your dogs

at all times. If you see anyone leaving their dog’s surprise for someone else to dodge, kindly remind

them what they need to do.

Also, please remember that we do have to abide by the Vestavia Hills Animal Control Leash Law where dogs are

always supposed to be on a leash unless contained by a fence.

Reminder…...Dogs are not allowed inside the fence at the playground.

Changes/Upgrades to your Property

Please remember that if you are planning on installing any hardscape items in

your yard or making changes to your landscaping or the exterior of your home,

such as:

Playset/Playhouse

Trampoline

Arbor

Basketball Goal

Fence

Swimming Pool/Sauna

Major landscape changes

Removal of trees

Exterior house changes

Porch/Deck

you must first submit the changes to the Liberty Park Architectural Review

Committee (ARC) for approval. If you are not sure if your change or addition

needs approval, please contact the ARC office at 945-6458.

Parties at the Playground

Please remember that when

you have a party at the play-

ground, it is your responsibility

to clean up after yourself and

take your trash home. Always

obey the rules on the signs as

you enter the playground.

Golf Carts

Beginning January 1,

2014, first time golf

cart registration will

be reduced from $150 to $100

and renewals each year will be

reduced from $100 to $50.

NEIGHBORHOOD SHIELD PROGRAM

Residents from the Alston Meadow community have begun forming a Neighborhood Shield program with the help of

Lt. Gilham with the Vestavia Hills Police Department. Neighborhood Shield is “neighbors knowing and looking out for

neighbors” and will result in a more secure environment. Full implementation of the program should take place in late

October. If you reside in Alston Meadow and want to participate or have questions, please contact the following:

Jim Bailey at [email protected] Leslie Caldwell at [email protected]

Ceci Hughes at [email protected] Beth Dunaway at [email protected]

The 2014 Homeowners Association Meetings will be held on January 21st. You will receive an official

notice of the meeting in the mail in December.

Our Community is growing ...

The Association would like to welcome all of our new residents throughout Liberty Park, including our newest

neighborhood Provence. Provence is a product of Signature Homes. If you haven't driven back to Provence,

there are new homes, a lake and an additional Park for all Liberty Park residents to enjoy.

If you are a new resident, you should have

received most everything you need regarding

the community in your new resident package.

If you have any additional questions, please

call Dee Kirkland at the Association Office

at 945-6430.

Homes are now being built in the Heritage Hills

neighborhood, including a new phase, The Hill,

by LifeScape Builders, LLC and the next

planned community within Liberty Park will be

Forest Hills. Forest Hills will be located just

inside the back gate, near Provence, on the left

and will be built by LifeScape Builders, LLC.

For more information regarding our

community, please visit the Sales Office.

Keep wipes out of the pipes (‘Flushable’ pre-moistened towelettes are causing millions of dollars’ worth of

problems in city sewer systems. Homeowners are winding up with plumbing bills too.)

Antibacterial wipes are available to clean just about every surface, from grimy floors to bathroom mirrors. Special-use

wipes are being marketed to women, pet owners and computer users. We’re hooked on the convenience of these pre-

moistened squares. But here’s the problem: A lot of them end up down the toilet and none are flushable. Well, they

flush just fine but the cloth-like products don’t disintegrate the way toilet paper does. That’s where it starts to cost us

money. City sewer systems around the United States are reporting expensive repair and maintenance issues resulting

from flushed wipes, according to the National Association of Clean Water Agencies.

Simply keeping inappropriate items out of the sewer system could prevent all of these problems and save everyone a

significant amount of money.

GARBAGE RECEPTACLES/TRASH

GARBAGE RECEPTACLES MAY BE AT THE STREET ON GARBAGE PICK-UP DAYS ONLY. THEY

MUST BE KEPT WHERE NOT VISIBLE FROM THE STREET AT ALL OTHER TIMES. IF YOU PLAN TO

BE OUT OF TOWN, PLEASE ASK A NEIGHBOR TO REMOVE YOUR RECEPTACLE FROM THE STREET AFTER THE GARBAGE HAS

BEEN PICKED UP.

PLEASE REMEMBER IF YOU HAVE LARGE PARTIES AT THE POOL OR PLAYGROUND, YOU MUST MAKE ARRANGE-

MENTS TO TAKE YOUR TRASH HOME FOR DISPOSAL.

If you have questions regarding your garbage service, please contact Allied Waste Services at 923-1650 or the Vestavia

Hills Public Works Department at 978-0196.

Fall Color Trail Alabama is beautiful throughout the year but especially in the fall. As the greens of summer surrender to glittering yellow poplars, scarlet dogwoods, orange maples and golden hickories, Alabama unfolds its patchwork quilt of color. This blend of brilliant autumn foliage, coupled with cooler temperatures and an occasional gentle breeze, makes for an unforgettable experience. Fall colors will begin showing in the moun-tains of North Alabama in early October and then sweep across the region. Colors will be at their peak from late October to early November.

At Oak Mountain State Park in Pelham, take in the view from Peavine Overlook and Peavine Falls. Head north to Oneonta/Blount County and enjoy the color from Horton Mill, Old Easley or Swann covered bridges and Palisades Park. Take the drive on I-59 up Whitney Mountain near Oneonta, and proceed up U.S. 231. In Cullman/Cullman County, the Ave Maria Grotto and the 277-foot-long, 90-foot-high Clarkson Covered Bridge offer excellent views, as do scenic drives U.S. 31 and 278. From Bankhead National Forest, take AL 195 to Double Springs, to AL 33, then take Forest Service roads 249, 262, 245 and 255 to CO 63 and back to AL 33.

Developed from a network of Indian trails between Natchez, Miss., and Nashville, Tenn., the Natchez Trace cuts diagonally across the northwestern corner of the state. Follow the entire 33 miles of the Trace through Alabama and head to Joe Wheeler State Park. Admire the view from the Joe Wheeler Dam near the cabin area on the Lawrence County side. After leaving U.S. 72, take a four-mile scenic drive into the park's resort area on the Lauderdale County side. In Huntsville, Monte Sano State Park offers beautiful foliage on Warpath Ridge Trail and its overlooks. Take scenic drives U.S. 72 out of Scottsboro and U.S. 431 out of Guntersville. A recommended viewing spot in Scottsboro/Jackson County is Russell Cave National Monument. Scenic drives: AL 79 across Skyline Mountain, AL 279, AL 65 through the Paint Rock River Valley, and U.S. 72.

See Lake Guntersville State Park from the lodge atop the mountain, then take AL 227 through the park and into Buck's Pocket State Park and nearby DeKalb and Etowah counties. In Gadsden/Etowah County, Noccalula Falls Park provides a bounty of fall color, as do drives on US 278, 11 and 411. Head to Ft. Payne and check out DeSoto State Park and Lodge, DeSoto Falls and Little River Canyon. Lookout Mountain Parkway, DeSoto Parkway and Old DeSoto Parkway provide lovely views. AL 176, part of Lookout Mountain Parkway, includes scenic overlooks of Little River Canyon. Finally, Cheaha State Park is the highest point in the state at 2,407 feet above sea level. Enjoy fall color from Bald Rock and Pulpit Rock trails as well as Talladega Scenic Drive, Skyline Drive and Skyway Motorway.
