Greetings from the Hill and welcome to the eighth edition of Hillcat Softball.

The Hillcats are coming off their sixth consecutive 30-win season and trip to the Sooner Athletic Conference Tournament in2012. Coach Mark Dicus and his staff have the Cats poised for another big season this spring.

We are very proud of the team’s accomplishments and look forward to watching the Cats climb to even greater heights in2013. We are also very excited to unveil our newly renovated Diamond Sports Complex. Originally opened in 2007, theballpark has undergone over $1.5 million in renovations and new construction over the past two years. We are so thankfulto have the opportunity to showcase this first-class facility and look forward to hosting state, regional and national eventsfor many years to come.

We appreciate your interest in our fledging athletic programs and hope you will join us at the ballpark on a regular basisthis spring. The outpouring of community support we’ve received has played a huge role in our early success and will remain vital to Hillcat Athletics aswe strive to raise the bar once again in 2013.

Thank you for all you do in support of the Hillcats!

Ryan Bradley

Director of AthleticsRogers State University

Welcome to another exciting season of Hillcat softball!

As Oklahoma’s fastest growing regional university during the past 10 years, RSU has enjoyed dynamic growth across itsentire enterprise, such as:

• Increasing its student population by 60 percent while still maintaining a personalized attention to service that’s become RSU’s hallmark;

• Adding new academic programs to meet the needs of Oklahoma’s business and industry;• Constructing two student apartment communities to provide the Tulsa metropolitan area’s only residential, public university;

• Expanding and remodeling academic facilities to provide students with up-to-date academic resources; and • Developing strong ties with the communities we serve in order to fulfill our mission of education and service.

RSU’s rapid growth also extends to our intercollegiate athletics, which are a relatively new addition after being reintroduced to campus in 2005. In onlya few short years, our Hillcat teams have become a vital component of the university’s DNA providing an infectious campus spirit and a strong connectionto the community. The university has invested in athletic facilities, including the new baseball/softball complex, Bushyhead Fieldhouse renovations, expansion and turf installation at Soldier Field and construction of soccer and cross country facilities on campus.

We appreciate our entire student body for their support of these campus initiatives, including the student fees that funded the recently completed $4million renovations of the soccer facilities and baseball/softball complex. Their support signals a strong vote of confidence in our athletic programs, butalso represents their investment in the quality of life at Rogers State.

As the RSU begins its first year as a NCAA Division II candidate, this season marks our last as a member of the Sooner Athletic Conference (SAC) andthe National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA). We have appreciated the high priority these two organizations have placed on promotinghealthy values, developing strong character traits, and encouraging academic achievement among all student-athletes. These are core values for RSU’sprograms, and we work daily to impress them upon our student-athletes.

We appreciate your interest in RSU athletics, and we look forward to another great season on the diamond. Go Hillcats!

Rogers State University: A Great Oklahoma Higher Education Success StoryRogers State University holds a historic position in the annals of Oklahoma higher education.

Since RSU was accredited as a four-year university in 2000, enrollment has increased by more than 75 percent, earningRSU the title of Oklahoma's fastest-growing regional university

A dynamic, progressive university with more than 4,600 students, RSU is widely recognized for its high-quality academicprograms, distance learning options and high-technology learning environment. RSU is the only public four-year,residential university in the Tulsa metropolitan area.

RSU offers a wide variety of bachelor's and associate degrees. Innovative new bachelor's degrees include appliedtechnology, environmental conservation, military history, sport management and game development.

Many students from northeast Oklahoma who plan to attend medical school complete their undergraduate studiesthrough RSU's program in medical/molecular biology. And RSU enjoys a statewide reputation for academic excellence inits nursing program.

Distinguished Academic Achievements RSU received continued accreditation from the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Collegesand Schools without further required evaluation for 10 years - a rarity in higher education in Oklahoma and a majoraccomplishment achieved by few universities. This is truly a testament to the high academic quality of RSU.

RSU participates in The Washington Center Internship Program, a nationally recognized program placing students withprivate, public, and nonprofit organizations in Washington, D.C. Students participating in the semester-long internship earncollege credit while they gain "real world" experience within their field of interest and interact with influential leaders andpolicymakers. RSU is one of only three universities in Oklahoma to participate in this prestigious program.

Most RSU faculty members hold doctoral degrees or thehighest degrees available in their fields from esteemedinstitutions across the nation, including Princeton University,Duke University and the University of Oklahoma.

The university’s Honors Program provides an atmospherewhere scholars can challenge themselves academicallyto maximize their college experience through specializedcourses, student/faculty joint research projects, and astrong emphasis on service learning in the community.

The President's Leadership Class (PLC), a four-yearscholarship program that fosters personal andprofessional development, was designed for RSUstudents who have demonstrated leadership abilities.

RSU also offers study abroad programs in Italy and Walesthrough the University's Studies-at-Large Program. Theinternational study programs provide students withopportunities to see the world, learn about othercultures, and enrich their educational experience.

Growth in Learning Facilities The Centennial Center, which opened in 2009, hasbecome the centerpiece of the main campus inClaremore. This two-level, 50,000-square-foot facilitycombines student development programs under oneroof, serves as a central location for students to study andsocialize and provides a focal point for the RSU campusin Claremore. The facility also offers ballrooms, conference centers, and meeting rooms for thecommunity.

A major expansion and renovation of Baird Hall on theClaremore campus was completed in 2010. The newBaird Hall has doubled in size and contains many of theleading-edge features associated with higher learningtoday, including classrooms equipped with SmartBoards, a performance studio, an art gallery and anoutdoor classroom for learning outdoors on sunny days.

RSU opened in September 2011 a new student apartmentcommunity that doubles the number of students living onthe main campus in Claremore. A Brief History of RSURSU was founded in 1909 as Eastern University Preparatory School in Claremore. The school prepared the daughters andsons of area residents to attend college. Historic Preparatory Hall, known for its iconic gold dome, was the first buildingon the school's campus.

However, the school closed only a few years after it opened. Taking its place was the storied Oklahoma Military Academy(OMA), which operated on the Hill from 1919 to 1971.

Known as the “West Point of the Southwest,” OMA has an extensive register of graduates who became great leaders, bothin military and civilian life. More than 2,500 OMA graduates served in the Armed Forces of the United States during WorldWar II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War. More than 100 graduates gave their lives in service to their country.

In 1971, OMA closed and Claremore Junior College opened on the Hill, serving more than 400 students. The junior collegegrew rapidly in the 1970s, and by the time it was renamed Rogers State College in 1982, the institution boasted a varietyof associate degree programs, distance learning capabilities, a new radio and television station and intercollegiateathletics.

In 1999, the Oklahoma Legislature renamed the institution Rogers State University and charged it with seekingaccreditation as a four-year university. Accreditation at the baccalaureate level was granted in 2000.

Today, RSU is one of Oklahoma's fastest-growing universities, offering a wide variety of bachelor's degree programs tomore than 4,600 students on campuses in Claremore, Bartlesville, Pryor and online.

Academic DevelopmentThe Rogers State University Student-Athlete Academic Development (SAAD) program is designed to support Hillcatathletes as they strive for success in the classroom and reach their educational and career goals. The program providesacademic support such as advisement, subject tutors, and learning groups for each RSU student-athlete.

Study sessions are designed specifically for each athletic program, and student-athletes are given the opportunity to workwith tutors trained in their particular area of academic study. The goal of the SAAD program is to help all athletes growinto responsible adults as they become upperclassmen and take initiative to be personally responsible for their educationand their future.

The Student-Athlete Academic Development program, led by Dr. Brian Andrews, is there every step of the way for allathletes, to ensure they are pursuing a degree that will support their personal goals and prepare them for life after college.

Hillcat LIFE ProgramsThe Hillcat LIFE programs are designed to promote student-athletes’ success off the field or court. Each year, RSUintroduces a variety of programs to enrich the college experience of its student-athletes, helping them avoid potentialpitfalls and giving them information useful when making important life decisions. The following are some examples ofHillcat LIFE programs:

Etiquette training: Student-athletes are instructed on proper dining habits, dating manners and courtesies. Each athleteis given a demonstration on the proper etiquette at formal meals.

Drug and Alcohol Counseling: Student-athletes are made aware of the dangers of drug and alcohol abuse. They are givenexamples of athletes with promising futures who failed to reach their potential due to drug/alcohol abuse.

“It Seemed Like a Good Idea at the Time…” Seminar: This presentation attempts to enlighten student-athletes aboutthe existing legal realities associated with various acts they likely deem benign and provokes introspection that will leadto more careful decision making.

Hillcat LIFE Programs

u The core values of respect, responsibility, integrity, servant leadership and sportsmanship are addressed in the Champions of Character program.

Page 9: 2013 Rogers State University Softball Media Guide

6

Nutrition Counseling: A nutritionist meets with student-athletes to discuss healthy meal choices and life styles. Athletesare given an overview of different types of foods and how they affect the human body.

Dangers of Gambling: Student-athletes are warned about the dangers of gambling addictions and also are warnedagainst gambling on collegiate athletics, which is a violation of NAIA and NCAA rules.

RSU athletics continues to expand its programs in order to provide a well-rounded education for all Hillcat athletes.

Champions of CharacterThe National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) Champions of Character program isdesigned to instill an understanding of character values in sport, and provide practical tools forstudent-athletes, coaches and parents to use in modeling exemplary character traits.

Launched by the NAIA in 2000, the Champions of Character program addresses character issuesmore comprehensively than any other national program for youth. The program currently reacheshundreds of thousands of students on nearly 300 college and university campuses in NorthAmerica and extends into their surrounding communities.

The NAIA has been informally teaching character development through athletics for decades. The core values of respect, responsibility, integrity, servant leadership and sportsmanship are addressed comprehensively in the Champions ofCharacter program.

The NAIA Champions of Character program is an educational outreach initiative that emphasizes the tenets of characterand integrity, not only for NAIA college students, but for younger students, coaches and parents in our communities.

Coaches, parents, administrators and community partners all have a role in developing students of character. The NAIAChampions of Character program brings them training, guidelines and behavior models to create positive environmentsthat promote personal growth and fun sport activity.

“I have always dreamed of being a doctor, where I can help people and make a dierence in their lives. RSU is giving me the chance to earn a bachelor’s degree that is perfect for pursuing medical school, while I can be active with campus organizations. rough RSU, I was able to get a summer internship with Grand River Dam Authority that gave me valuable real-world experience. It all adds up to make RSU the university I always wanted to attend.”

2013 Softball Season OutlookThe stats back up the Hillcat head coach’s praise of hissenior shortstop as she finished last season with a .972fielding percentage where she earned a SAC Gold Glove.

At third base Shona Guerrero returns for her secondseason at the hot corner for the Hillcats.

“With her and Fauchier on that side of the infield youkind of hope balls are hit to the left side of the infield,”explained the Hillcats fifth-year head coach.

With a .909 fielding percentage from the hot corner,Guerrero has a quick, accurate arm and good gloveaccording to Dicus.

“She’s an amazing defensive player pretty closeup there to Brooks Robinson,” joked Dicus.

Backing up Guerrero will be Linsey Curtis ahard worker that brings power to the plateand is well known in the conference and thenation for her prolific home run hitting.

At second the Cats will look to Iowa WesternCommunity College transfer Cailin Simpsonto step into a starting role. A slick defenderthat batted .344 with 74 hits and 55 RBI aseason ago in the NJCAA ranks, Simpsonwill be backed up by Megan Williams.

Williams served as the Hillcats secondbaseman for most of last season but will

look to add depth in the middle infield in2013. Sophomore Tory Fitch can play both

second and shortstop. Dicus likes the effort thatFitch continues to put in to get better.

Returning two-year starter Taran Threet andjunior college transfer Toni Shurtliff will vie forthe starting spot at first base. Threet started

all 59 games for RSU in 2012 andbatted .289 in 180 at-bats. Shurtliffjoins the Hillcats from NorthernOklahoma College-Tonkawa where

she batted .333 with 56 hits and 32 RBIas a sophomore last year. Dicus expectsfor both to see a lot of time on the rightside of the infield.

A season ago the Rogers State softball team finishedwith a 36-23 record but a Sooner Athletic Conferencerecord of 9-17 and seventh place finish left Hillcat headcoach Mark Dicus wanting more.

“Frankly we’ve fallen short the last two years,” said Dicus.“Not to make excuses we’ve fallen short.”

Sooner Athletic Conference coaches votedthe Hillcats to finish sixth in the seven teamleague. But a crop of newcomers joining analready veteran, experience laden squad hasRSU’s fifth year head coach expecting bigthings from the 2013 Softball Cats.

“This group is by far the most athletic groupwe’ve ever had and we’ve had some goodgroups,” Dicus explained of this year’s squad.“Not to put too much pressure on them but notonly are we talented but we’ve got great depth.”

The self-proclaimed “Fab Five” returns for theirfourth season on the Hill. The first recruiting classsigned by Dicus in 2009 has won 105 games overthe past three seasons.

Dicus discussed the “Fab Five,” “I can’t say enoughabout them as young people. They’re going tograduate, they’re going to be Hillcats true and true.”

Consisting of Ashlie Fauchier, Katrina Loy, Linsey Curtis,Ashley Dillman and Shelby Brogdon the “Fab Five”looks to leave their mark on the program in their finalseason.

“We thought we’d get the job done a lot quicker andwe haven’t,” declared Dicus. “It’s a special groupbecause not only are they good softball players, they’resuper people. They’re people you want to be around.”

InfieldReturning for her fourth season at shortstop is AshlieFauchier, a three-time All-Sooner Athletic Conferenceselection. Last season she started all 59 games for theHillcats, finishing top three on the team in 11 offensivestatistical categories.

It’s on the defensive end that Fauchier draws thepraise of her head coach. “Fauchier is probably thebest defensive player in our conference bar none. She isa highlight reel waiting to happen,” said Dicus. u Ashlie Fauchier

“If Fleck can get close to what she did last year the twowill blend together really well and give us a one-twopunch or a staff that will work together really well, hand-in-hand,” said Dicus.

Dicus explained what Rios brings to the circle, “We lookfor great things from her and she can be a differencemaker in the circle. She’s got great control and a varietyof pitches that will compliment her arsenal all the waythrough.”

Another addition comes in the form of new pitchingcoach Andrea Vaughn. Most recently the head coach atOologah High School, Vaughn has done things toimprove the pitchers in a few weeks that are evident tothe Hillcat head coach. Dicus is excited to see what theguidance of Vaughn along with the mixture of pitchingstyles will do for RSU.

Linsey Curtis adds another option inside the circle as shecontinues to improve every day. Dicus likes the drop ballthat Curtis possesses in her repertoire and believes thesenior will be an inning eater.

CatcherAfter starting 58 of the Hillcats 59 games at catcher aseason ago Niki Keck returns for her senior season in2013. Despite being the incumbent Keck isn’t necessarilyguaranteed the job in 2013.

Odessa College transfer Desireé Ayarzagoitia made apush in the fall for the starting job. After batting .389 with65 hits, 18 doubles, eight home runs and 47 RBI as asophomore a season ago in the NJCAA.

2013 Softball Season Outlook

After missing all of her junior season due to injury ShelbyBrogdon returns for the Cats in 2013. Brogdon could seetime at first base but is most dangerous at the plate with20 homeruns in just two seasons and a sluggingpercentage of .586.

“Brogdon can go in and play first base and be thedesignated player some,” Dicus said. “She’s a greatclutch hitter and someone that you can bring off thebench and she’ll deliver.”

The lone freshman in the cast of Hillcat newcomers, ErinPatrick, is a hard worker that could see time at first base.Depth in the infield and throughout the team has theHillcat head coach most excited about the upcomingyear.

“That’s probably the biggest thing about our team now. We’ve always had a good softball team but we’ve neverhad near the depth we have now,” Dicus discussed.“We’ve seen it spike in intra-squad scrimmages and kidsare actually pushing each other.”

PitcherA season ago Laura Fleck was forced to be the Hillcatseveryday pitcher as she won 28 games in her 54appearances in the circle. The southpaw pitched in 292.2innings in her first year in a RSU uniform out ofMuskogee (Okla.) High School.

This year Fleck will share time with Yolanda Rios a juniortransfer from Midland Junior College. Rios recorded a 25-8 record as a sophomore with nine saves and a 2.77 ERA.In 225.1 innings pitched last year she struck out 202batters. A right handed pitcher, Rios was effective as afreshman at Midland finishing with a 22-4 record with sixsaves and a 2.26 ERA in 180 innings.

u Laura Fleck returns for her sophomore sesaon in the circle after winning 28 games in 2012.

2013 Softball Season Outlook“She’s probably better on the offensive end, yet Keck hasgood knowledge and understanding of what we’re tryingto do. How they blend together will be interesting,”discussed Dicus of the catchers.

A third player, Jamie King, could be put in the mix behindthe plate due to her ability offensively.

“King is a mult-faceted player that can play in the outfieldand catch,” said Dicus. “We’re trying to figure out how tokeep her bat in the line-up, keep Desiree’s bat in theline-up and Keck, a kid that played every game for us lastyear.”

OutfieldIn left field the Hillcats return three-year starter KatrinaLoy while incorporating newcomer Jackie Flores.

“Loy swings a big bat and will probably be our clean-uphitter to start off when we open the season. She’s a soliddefender in left field and knows where the ball issupposed to go,” the Hillcat skipper said.

A Claremore, Okla. native, Loy started all 59 games in leftfield last season and was second on the team in homeruns with seven. She was named a Captial One CoSIDAAcademic All-American as a junior.

“Flores give a little more range defensively as she cancover gap to line and run balls down,” explained Dicus ofthe Odessa College transfer. “She gives us a lot of depthin the outfield and automatically we become moreathletic.”

Candace Monigold will take over centerfield duties aftera two-year career at Northeastern Oklahoma A&M inMiami, Okla.

Dicus praised his addition in centerfield, “She’s a smoothoperator out there and covers gap-to-gap well. Monigoldhas great hands, great range, takes great angles and doesit effortlessly. She looks like she’s been out there herwhole life.”

Northern Oklahoma College–Tonkawa transfer KatieEllington could round out the line-up for the Hillcats inright field.

The Hillcat head coach explained the Bishop Kelleyproduct, “Ellington is a JUCO transfer that is super-fastwith a powerful arm and powerful bat. She’s very athleticcovering line to gap and a lot of ground. She’ll be asurprise on the offensive end with the numbers she canput up.” u Jackie Flores and the Hillcats look to make their first trip to the

NAIA National Tournament in 2013.

King brings good range, gap-to-gap and could be a lead-off hitter playing a lot in right field, sometime at catcherand designated player.

Ashlee Dillman can play all three of the outfield spotsand is a valued piece to the coaching staff due to herversatility. Her awareness on the base paths andexperience has Dicus believing she could have a greatsenior season.

ScheduleThe season starts Feb. 13 on the road facing BaconeCollege in Muskogee, Okla. The home opener is just afew days later at the newly renamed Diamond SportsComplex as William Woods comes to town for adoubleheader on Sunday, Feb. 17. WWU received fourvotes in the NAIA Softball Coaches’ Top 25 PreseasonPoll giving RSU an early test.

“We never back away from anyone and we always builda strong schedule,” explained Dicus of his schedulingphilosophy. “We build a tough schedule to prepare us forpostseason play. To prepare us for the SAC tournamentand to try and get a national tournament bid. That’spossible because the SAC comes with such a greatreputation nationally.”

RSU travels to three tournaments during the season thefirst in Wichita, Kan. at the Friends University Tournamenton March 1-2. A week later the Cats travel to McPherson,Kan. playing in the McPherson College Tournament. Thefollowing week RSU plays in its final tournament onMarch 15-16 at the David Fillmore Memorial Tournamentin Springifield, Mo hosted by Evangel University.

“We go to three tournaments early. At Friends we’ll playsome ranked teams, McPherson we’ll play one or twonationally ranked teams in pool play and then at Evangelthat might be the toughest of the three,” said Dicus.

Sooner Athletic Conference play gets started March 5thon the road in Chickasha, Okla. facing USAO. Theconference home opener comes two days later as theLady Drovers come to the Diamond Sports Complex onMarch 7th.

March 29th the Hillcats travel to preseason No. 2-rankedLubbock Christian for four games in two days. PreseasonNo. 16 St. Gregory’s comes to Claremore on April 6 whilepreseason No. 4 Oklahoma City closes out the SoftballCats regular season with games on April 23rd inClaremore and a road trip on April 27th.

Dicus discussed the slate of conference games. “This is ayear we can battle evenly throughout that field. Thenthrow in Oklahoma Baptist which has a great team andgood coach. Mid-America Christian is picked last in theconference but in this conference last is still pretty good.Their coach is there for his second season, he’s a hall offame coach and he’ll upgrade that program so the SACin itself will be a battle every day.”

Despite a tough conference slate and a non-conferenceschedule packed with quality opponents. Dicus believesthe experience will prove the Hillcat battle testedespecially with a strong group of upperclassmen on theroster.

“The schedule is probably tougher than any schedulewe’ve ever had. But this group of seniors collectively hasdone a pretty good job and compiled a lot of wins andnot a lot could do that.”

u Head Coach Mark Dicus has compiled a 135-101 record, most wins by any coach in program history.

Fight SongHillcats of RSUStanding tall in Red and BlueWe will prevailWe refuse to failBecause our spirit's greatWe wear our colors proudlyOn our way to victoryGo Rogers State!!!

Lyrics by Yvonne PaceMusic by Clarence Woods/arr. Weller

Alma MaterRise above the Claremore valley Camelot to view,Stands our gracious alma materThrusting t’ward the blue.

Lift the chorus, speed it onwardFor the Red and Blue,Hail to thee our alma materHail to R-S-U!

Fear the ClawNot long after Hillcat men’s and women’s basketball wasintroduced at RSU, the home court at the ClaremoreExpo Center quickly gained a reputation as a formidablevenue for opponents.

As a member of the Hillcat team aligns himself or herselfon the free throw line, the crowd at the Expo Centerextends one arm skyward and makes the sign of the clawwith their fists.

If the shot falls successfully, arms descend in the mannerof the scratch of a ferocious wild cat.

As members of an opposing team prepare to shoot a freethrow, the rowdy RSU student section has been knownto intimidate the shooter. Depending on the shooter’sfortitude, sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn’t!

Homecoming WeekThe university celebrated the first-ever Homecomingduring the first week of November 2007, during the firstHillcat men’s and women’s basketball games.

At RSU, Homecoming is a campus-wide tradition.

A bonfire is typically held the night before the big gamesin the open area west of the University Village B studentapartments.

A campus office decoration competition is held duringHomecoming Week, in which students and staffmembers compete to show their Hillcat pride.

The Hillcat Hacker Invitational is a fun-filled golf eventplayed amidst the hazards of Rogers State University’sscenic Claremore campus. The game features specialnondestructive golf balls and is designed for pros, amateurs and hackers alike. The goal of this event is togenerate camaraderie among the university’s friends andalumni, showcase RSU’s beautiful and historic campusand establish an outstanding Hillcat Homecomingtradition.

The Slam Dunk Contest and 3-point Shootout hasbecome a yearly tradition held on the Thursday ofHomecoming Week. The Homecoming Tailgate Party, held outside of the Claremore Expo Center, is one of themost popular Homecoming events for students, alumni, and the community.
