Whether thestyle adopted is one of a loud commander ora quiet influencer, there are three qualitiesthat I find essential in the leaders I have mostrespected: honesty, so the disciples feel freeto trust the motives of the leader; the abilityto engage, so the team members feel part ofsomething beneficial; and support, so theteam will feel encouraged to take enoughrisk to stumble, but know they won’t be al-lowed to fail.

My parents are responsible for mine. Theybegan with the early life lessons like, “be OKwith being different and thinking differently;”“be confident that what you have to say is im-portant;” “don’t settle for anything less thangreat;” and “if at first you don’t succeed, figureout another way to get it done.” I learned fromthem that great leaders lead by example andtheir example motivates others to greatness. Inmy role as a mother, a mentor, and a businessleader, I’m focused on sharing these early les-sons in leadership with those around me.

VALERIE FRANCIS. Sanofi.There have been several critical influences inmy life that have definitively shaped my lead-ership perspective and acumen. My parents andgrandparents taught me the value of persever-ance, commitment, self-esteem, and consis-tently doing my best, no matter the challengeor obstacles. My grandparents immigrated tothe United States with few possessions and nomoney but worked hard to establish successfulreal estate and catering businesses. No matterthe challenge they found a way to overcomeand also helped many others along the way. Myparents, who were administrators in higher ed-ucation, provided me an opportunity to seehow they positively encouraged students tolearn and assisted in defining their future.These experiences at an early age were the foun-dation upon which I developed my own worldviews and have served as the basis for my visionand values with respect to leadership.

JENNY COLOMBO. Takeda Pharmaceuticals.Early in my career I had two senior faculty men-tors — Keith Rodvold and Larry Danziger —who taught me not to let my expertise niche mebut instead use it to open new doors; this is thepower of diversity. My first true mentor inpharma was Jeff Wojtowicz, who is a proactiveleader and who inspired me to make things hap-pen rather than let things happen. My most re-cent mentor is my current boss Charlie Baum,whose confidence in me gave me leadership vis-ibility. I havelearned, through personally making this errortoo many times, that when I quickly jump tosolving problems for others they miss out onthe opportunity to develop and I miss out onfinding the best solutions. It can be hard to re-sist the temptation to show others that youknow how to solve problems and allow themto find their own solutions. Probably the mostimportant tool I would recommend is the abil-ity to use humor at work. It diffuses stress andputs people at ease. When people are at easethey perform better.

JEANINE O’KANE. Chandler Chicco. Good intuition is a vital leadership skill; it’s notmagic. This is a combination of experience,knowledge, instinct, and constant learning. Tocontinually develop intuition, it’s important toavoid micromanaging; step back to see thewhole picture. Surround oneself with intuitiveleaders. Listen to how they make decisions andwatch how others react. To fine-tune and learnto trust your intuition, make note of your gutfeelings and whether they turn out to be accu-rate. When faced with a tough decision, listento what your intuition tells you.

At the same time,a great leader must be willing and able to makethe tough decisions that move the needle onthe business. Vision and the ability to articulatethe vision in a meaningful way to a wide vari-ety of people are also key traits in a great leader.People who understand how their work con-tributes to accomplishing the vision not onlyare inspired but also bring energy and creativ-ity to overcoming the inevitable challenges andobstacles that are along the path. Finally, agreat leader is authentic. A person’s authentic-ity becomes a key aspect of leadership in tough

They were both similar intheir humility, deep understanding of theirtradescraft, and strong sense of humanity andethics. Trust that whenyou empower others you are developing confi-dence and fostering growth is another tech-nique. Leaders need to create a culture that saysit’s okay to take risks, make mistakes, bewrong, even fail — because as long as we arelearning we are growing.

XINYAN HUANG. Lundbeck. I recommend reading leadership books, attend-ing seminars, observing famous leaders, evenlooking at our bosses. But to be a better leaderone has to practice leadership behaviors con-sciously every day.

KELLY KAERICHER. AstraZeneca. I believe any leadership techniques that helpdevelop and support the team are the mostimportant. Two examples are providing cleardirection, which can help simplify an ap-proach or task, and giving employees the toolsthey need to succeed. Further, catching peopledoing good things and telling them about itneeds to be part of any leader’s repertoire. Fi-nally, I believe that showing interest in em-ployees — getting to know them as people —is also a good leadership technique. Knowingwhat motivates and interests employees helpsto better support them in their goals. Andwhen people feel supported, they are moti-vated and they want to succeed.

It is based onthemes in the book Leadership Presence byKathy Lubar and Belle Linda Halpern. I highlyrecommend this book as a starting place for de-veloping tools and techniques to be confidentas a leader.

JANE PETTY. Purdue Pharma. The best leadership tool is an ability to activelylisten. Leaders seek to understand by carefullylistening and ask questions to uncover poten-tial solutions or answers. It’s important to beopen to others ideas and propose solutions. Aleader sees the big picture and is able to explainwhy, how, and what role everyone plays in thatbig picture.
