REHABILITATION TOUR & DINNER COLLABORATION: This year’s dinner and tour will highlight sites on the Oro Mo-

raine and Carden Plain — two prominent natural landforms in the Orillia area.

Collaboration is critical to finding a sustainable balance between competing land

uses. Join us on June 24 and 25 as we showcase some of the best examples in col-

laboration between producers, with farmers and conservation organizations to use

aggregate resources sustainably, returning the land to an appropriate land use.

Horseshoe Valley Resort is our starting point, with dinner and presentations on Mon-

day night. Tuesday’s bus tour includes six properties, each depicting unique high-

lights.

(Personal Protective Equipment (steel-toed boots, hard hat, safety goggles and

safety vest) is mandatory on the tour. Agenda and site details on pg. 2.)

LAFARGE ORILLIA PIT: Since 1973,

the Orillia Pit has had land holdings under

extraction owned by three different farm-

ers. On the tour you will see how agricul-

tural land can be extracted and returned

back to productive agriculture in accor-

dance with the landowner’s requirements.

CARDEN PLAIN: Finding a balance

between conservation and aggregate ex-

traction is highlighted in the Carden Plain, a

vast limestone plain east of Orillia. The re-

gion was the subject of a study, completed

in 2012, which assessed the cumulative im-

pact of 11 quarry operations on water re-

sources and the natural environment.

The tour will cover Lafarge’s Kirkfield

Quarry, which was involved in a bank swal-

low study with the Canadian Wildlife Ser-

vice. Other collaborative work with the

Couchiching Conservancy will also be high-

lighted. Ron Reid of the Couchiching Con-

servancy will introduce the Bluebird Ranch,

which protects a large portion of the Carden

Alvar and the habitat for such species as the

meadowlark, bobolink and bluebird. The

last stop in this area will be at the Dufferin

Carden Quarry to discover how a quarry

manages water through pumping and dis-

charge.

G.H. STEWART SITES: Known through-

out the community of Orillia for its dedication

to providing reliable services, G.H. Stewart Con-

struction has supplied aggregate from the Oro

Moraine to local projects, such as Casino Rama,

the public library and Soldiers Memorial Hospi-

tal. Highlights include collaborating with La-

farge Canada Inc. for access to resources, as

well as a tour of sand

and gravel pits dem-

onstrating progres-

sive and final rehabili-

tation back to three

different land uses:

active agriculture,

recreation and a resi-

dential land use.

NELSON UHTHOFF QUARRY:

Rehabilitating a quarry is different from reha-

bilitating a pit. You will experience this unique

process firsthand at the Uhthoff Quarry, where

rehabilitating slopes and resulting open cliff

faces take priority. The site’s existing quarry

floor will one day be at the bottom of a lake,

which will be large enough for the community

to use for boating, fishing and swimming. The

quarry also leases land to the regional police as

a training facility.
