Stewardship: Angel’s Among Us So here is the Good news: We have been given

gifts to share by messengers of the Gospel. These messengers mythically and biblically are

called angels…The old country song by Alabama puts it best:

OH, I believe there are angels among us, sent down to us from somewhere up above.

They come to you and me in our darkest hours To show us how to live To show us how to give

To guide us with a light of love.

This is a description of the faithful who gather each week to do ministry at St. John’s . We celebrate all the ministries of our

congregation on September 29th with a “fair” that displays St. John’s angels in action. Our friends from Thrivent Financial for

Lutherans will be assisting our celebration with food and games as we gather at the noon hour for this ministry fair, and Stteeler game potluck. Time and Talent are the first examples of God’s work in action. I invite you to come and see,

The Congregation as Part of Social Ministry The Social Ministry Committee would like to thank the congregation for their support for the projects we sponsored in 2013. With your

help, we were able to provide the following: North Side Common Ministries -- approximately $1200 in food, 12 shelter meals, a Fathers’ Day collection, $600 dollars for the

men’s shelter, and 130 Christmas gifts for the children of food bank clients.

Glade Run -- a Lenten collection of $841 for kids clothing & shoes. North Hills Community Outreach -- on-going donations of food,

purchase of citrus fruit, donations for utilities & donations of coats. St. John’s-- meals and transportation for our members;

Bethlehem Haven Women’s shelter, Mothers’ day collection of $610. Grace’s closet -- clothing collections at approx. 1000 pounds.

The Greater Pittsburgh Food Bank--- piggy bank collection of about $600.

We thank Thrivent for Lutherans for their one third match for North Side Common Ministries and Glade Run collections.

N.H.C.O. Winter Coat Collection- N.H.C.O. is collecting new and gently used winter coats for local families in need through October. Children’s and adult XL and XXL are especially needed. Coats should be clean and have working zippers. Donations can be dropped off at N.H.C.O. Allison Park, 1975 Ferguson Road, Allison Park, PA 15101, Monday – Friday, 9a.m.-4p.m., and at the food pantry behind the building on Sat. Octo-ber 5 from 9a.m.-noon. Thanksgiving on Every Table– N.H.C.O. is collecting food items to create complete Thanksgiving meals to distribute to local families in need. Items that make a meal in-clude: grocery store gift cards of at least $10 for turkey purchase, large boxes of stuffing mix and instant mashed potatoes, canned cranberry sauce, canned vegetables, easy pumpkin pie mix, evaporated milk, muffin mix, turkey gravy mix and napkins. APPRISE offers FREE Medicare Open Enrollment events and counseling- APPRISE, Pennsylvania’s State Health Insurance Assistance Program, is offering private, one-on-one appointments to help clients Medicare and Medicaid benefits, and make informed decisions about health care options. The appointments will be held at two FREE open enrollment events: Thursday, October 15 from 1:00 – 4:30 p.m., in Orchard Hill Church, 2551 Brandt School Road, Wexford, PA 15090 And Tuesday, November 19 from 1:00 – 4:30 p.m.. in Sub-urban General Hospital, 100 S. N.H.C.O. Seeking Senior Companions for County Program- Are you 55 or older? Are you interested in helping vulnerable older adults by visiting them in their homes? Are you able to serve between 15 and 40 hours per week? Consider becoming a Senior Com-panion! N.H.C.O., an Area Agency on Aging Senior Companion Program Volunteer Sta-tion, is seeking Senior Companions to volunteer in northern Allegheny County. Senior Companions will earn a tax-free hourly stipend, meal allow-ance and mileage reimbursement for related travel, plus pre-service orientation, monthly training and supplemental accident and liability insurance while on duty. Senior Companions must meet certain income guidelines. The next Senior Companion Orientation is October 28-31. Please apply early to be eligible to attend. Seniors need your friendship and time, a ride to the doctor or grocery, a friendly visit or phone call, or help with light yard work. Open Your Heart to a Senior is committed to helping senior citizens live safely and independently in their own homes throughout Allegheny County. Volun-teers can help by providing transportation to medical appointments and grocery shopping, telephone reassurance calls, friendly home visits, yard work and more. The time commitment is flexible and the need is ongoing in every Allegheny County community.

Safety for Seniors will conduct FREE Home Safety Checks-Trained Safety for Sen-iors volunteers with Open Your Heart to a Senior conduct a brief but thorough FREE home safety assessment using a written checklist making recommendations for family members to adjust/remove potential hazards. They install smoke alarms (if needed) and leave seniors with a bag of safety items, like a flashlight and fresh batteries, a bath mat, night light and other helpful items. After the check has been completed seniors qualify for either a free grab bar or an indoor railing installed at no charge. CHRISTIAN LITERACY October 2013 Christian Literacy, St. John’s Mission to the World, has been headquartered in the “2nd Floor Apart-

ment” since 1975. Staff: Dr. Bill &Linda Kofmehl, Chris & Jennie Ebner, Rebecca Pirone & a host of

Christian Literacy continues to reach out locally, nationally, and internationally from the second

floor “apartment" . If you would like to "“See the Doctor" call 412-364-3777.

We are pleased to report that the Christian Literacy Outreach has been vproductively occupied over the summer months. The Summer Reading Camps went well at sites in Pleasant Hills, East Pittsburgh, Duquesne, Lutheran Church Camp, Agape, in Hickory.

The Greatest Gift When our staff was testing for the Camp at First Presbyterian Church of Duquesne, a young woman volunteer came up to me and said, “You’re the man who tested me for the Camp when I was 6, fourteen years ago!” We later learned from Pastor Judy Slater that “Yolanda” had recently told a regional meeting of the Presbyterian Women’s organization that the greatest gift she ever received was a brochure at her school that advertised the Duquesne Summer Reading Camp. The Camp turned her life around educationally and her family became involved in the church. Training of Tutors We trained volunteers from the Christian Life Church in Trafford for an afterschool outreach for children on July 30th. On August 31st, fifteen tutors were trained for Pastor Keith Kaufold’s Eighth Avenue Coffee House ministry in Homestead. Initially they were to work with illiterate adults, but Pastor K recently received an appeal from the local school district to help the children in a Homestead elementary school – which has the third worst reading scores in the County. Training for Allegheny Center Alliance Church Chris and I trained Deb S., a short term missionary to Spain, so she can work with the residents of Cinderella House (a refuge for those escaping from the sex trade). We also trained Lori H. so she could be involved in an after-care prison ministry in the McKees Rocks area. Lori has worked as a nurse in the county jail. Oakland Academy of Reading has begun its fall schedule of activities for young children lacking basic reading skills. Reading Specialist Rebecca Pirone, director of the Academy, offers: Private tutoring, small group tutoring, professional testing, neigh-borhood outreach, and training of parents and community volunteer. We anticipate an-other semester of involvement by student volunteers from Carlow, thanks to Dr. Abrams of our Board. Funding applications to Pittsburgh Presbytery the Great Ends of the Church Fund was brought to our attention a few months ago. It wants to fund “out of the box” projects that will “advance the Kingdom”. I inquired and was encouraged to send in three appli-cations for consideration. The first will cover costs of development, publication, and implementation of ENGLISH PRIMER FOR THE DEAF in Ghana, Africa (possibly in-cluding a trip to hold workshops in country). The second will do the same for the IPAD app to teach English in India, South Korea and other countries. The third involves the total upgrade of the BIBLE STORIES FOR NEW READERS – using the forty most com-mon English words. A fourth project (editing and publishing THE BRIDGE TO ENG-LISH) will be a part of a future application. Student “Jumps for Joy” in excitement over learning to read. Major Joy E. of the Salvation Army’s Eastern Territory staff (New York HQ) reported that her English les-sons with Olga have gone very well. “I have done 9 lessons with Olga and she is so excited that she can read! She jumped up and down and cried with joy! After my next class with her she will be able to read a scripture passage in church! Thank you so much for giving us material that is so useful.” THRIVENT has offered its local members the opportunity to designate their "Thrivent Choice" dollars to Christian Literacy. Christian Literacy has already applied for approval and has been accepted. Call Dr. Bill for information.

A BIG THANK YOU to Brownie Troop 51486 for a fantastic job of cleaning up the preschool play-

ground. The 9 girls and 6 of their moms pulled all of the weeds and spread

wood chips to make sure the playground was ready for the start of the new

school year. The troop meets 2 Wednesdays each month at St. John's. They

all worked very hard and we want them to know how

much their effort was appreciated! Thanks so much girls!

ST. JOHN’S has recently received a

donation of 11 gravesites located in the

Allegheny Memorial Cemetery. The

Cemetery Committee is offering to sell them

for the same price as our own plots--$500 each

plus a transfer fee. This is a considerable

savings. This offer is not limited to church

members, so if you or any of your neighbors or

friends want to take advantage of this, please

contact the church office.

HERITAGE HOSPICE As the kids get ready to go back to school, it’s a great time to begin a rewarding

volunteer opportunity! Heritage Hospice, LLC is looking for individuals who would like to share their time and talents with our patients and families right here in your

neighborhoods. The possibilities are endless for patient volunteers – take your talents and put them to a special use or talk with our volunteer coordinator for

many more ideas! Our office is located on Freeport Street in New Kensington. We would love to have you join our team and make a difference is someone’s life!

Preschool Panorama

The children are enjoying their new classes. They are anxious to learn new things, go on field trips, have their pictures taken,

start music, and gym classes. The 2 year olds & Moms are having fun learning to share

and doing new activities. Our 3 year olds are wearing “the color the day” and making someone of that color, or, someone who wears that color.

They are going to Reilly’s pumpkin patch. The 4’s are beginning the study of the alphabet, and taking a

week on each letter. They will go to Shenots. The prekindergarten classes are making new friends, learning about

the alphabet and numbers, and doing fall activities. Thank you for all that everyone did to get our rooms ready for

classes. We still have a few openings in all age groups. Have them

Michelle Horsley, is hoping for

more participants in the music

programs at St. John’s. She is seeking

members for the adult choir, children’s choir, adult bell

choir, children’s chime choir and instrumentalists. You

can be a full-time participant or choose to contribute your

talent at special services and programs. Let us support

her enthusiasm by volunteering your time and talent.

Helping kids develop money smarts is something many parents overlook says “home-schooling Mom” Amanda van

der Gulik. Kids, she says, can be entrepreneurs by generating money based on their particular passions, gifts and abilities and she believes that upping kids’ financial IQ is as important as any traditional subject taught in school.

She says “when kids have to ask or beg for money it doesn’t feel good. When you create your own money, you feel so much more confident.

You’re giving something of value back to the world.”

So how do kids create their own cash? If they excel in dance, karate or French, they can offer to tutor other kids in the neighborhood. Simple

lawn and garden services, dog walking or running errands for seniors are good entrepreneurial jobs kids can take on fairly easily. And of course, the

classic lemonade stand is a time-honored tradition which we have all probably participated in.

A former teaching assistant and tutor, van der Gulik uses storytelling

as the main teaching method in a 12-module course at www.teachingchildrenaboutmoney.com

Through audio, video, cartoons, storybooks, novels and workbooks, students learn about setting goals, how to value money and how to stay focused on the road to financial success. She says one of the best ways to approach your children about money is to come up with a collective

goal, such as a trip or a Wii system for the whole family. Kids feel so bonded when they see their parents treating them as an equal.

As Stewardship season approaches, we will be exploring ways to become better stewards in both our personal lives and as part of our church family.

It’s happened again – summer

has nearly zipped right by us.

Soon we will be setting the ta-

ble for a Thanksgiving Turkey.

And than just a few weeks

later we will be handing out

children’s holiday presents to

the families who visit our Food Pantry on a regular basis.

This year the number of food insecure individuals and families that

utilized the Northside Common Ministries Food Pantry grew to over

900 each month. Just a few years ago that number was only about 700

and when we look back a decade it was closer to 400. The need

continues to grow. At Christmas time each year we reach out to our

friends for help with toys for the children of our food pantry families

and winter wear and undergarments for the men who stay

in our shelter.

As you walk through the Park enjoying the

beautiful Summer/Fall breeze it’s hard to

imagine that soon we will be thinking of hats

and scarves; but it is just around the corner.

Each Fall and Winter Pleasant Valley Shelter

has a larger need then the year before for

tube socks, tee shirts and men’s underwear.

The shelter fills up every night of the year but during the cold

months we also get hit during the day by individuals who are

sleeping in abandoned buildings, on the street , in other shelters

or on a friends sofa – all of whom are in need of warm socks,

t-shirts and underwear.

If you are looking for an activity to rally your fellow congregants

around—consider holding a winter needs collection to benefit the

homeless. Warm tube socks, tee shirts sizes medium to 3 Xl and men’s

underwear size 32- 48 are always in need at Pleasant Valley Shelter.

Fill a giant stocking with new tube socks, hold a competition to see if

boxers or briefs win out in your collection basket or serve everyone

that brings in a package of t-shirts a glass of brewed iced tea—have

fun with it! And give us a call if you need us to pick up the donations.
