COMMODORE’S COMMENTS
November is cruising in on the tide of a very active October.
For starters, the club met for it's Buccaneer Night at a new/old restaurant, "El Ranchito". It was new to us, but has been around since the early beginning of "The Villages". I understand that their courtyard was the concept for the "Villages on the Square". Be that as it may, what a delightful restaurant. It was friendly with delicious southwestern food at modest prices. There was plenty of room to accommodate us and definitely a restaurant to keep on our list for the future.
Also on our social calendar was the annual Halloween Party this year again at Dave and Patty Moring's. What a scream in the middle of the woods with all those spooky and creative critters of all ages lurking around. The costumes that really stood out were the Christmas tree and gift box designed by and containing Terry and Dee Davies .... totally amazing!
This month, we preceded our Lemon Point, Lake Weir Sunday Sail with a refresher course in Racing Rules. Nine of us members and Harley (Wayne Birkenmeyer's dog) got together on The Sims’ Back Porch. Kathy Olbekson, Skip Archibald, Art Twitchell, Nita Williams, Wayne Birkenmeyer, Paul Straub, and Ed and Lynn Sims, with a little help from some liquid refreshment . . . and led by Bob Cole, delved into the strategies of competitive sailing.
There was some very competitive sailing going on in the intra-lake regattas at Lake Monroe and Lake Harris. On the weekend of October 5th & 6th Ed Sims and his crew sailing on his 23' Hunter, "Point Blank", wonthe Sanford Fall Regatta Trophy for First Place-Over All in it's class among 8 competitors. Way to go Ed Sims,Paul Straub, Barbara Hancock, Ross Martin & Art Twitchell !
Also, Ed and crew competed in the Clemens Cup Regatta over October 12th & 13th weekend tying for first place, but getting the 2nd Place Central Florida Yacht Club Trophy on the technicality for breaking ties. Still, an outstanding job and a good reason for celebration. These races are a great way to participate in active sailing and to get to know many of the enthusiastic and competent sailors in the region. Many of these sailors come to our events in a demonstration of reciprocity. In fact, there were more of these sailors enrolled in our own Sunset Harbor Challenge than there were of our own members.
Which brings me to the Sunset Harbor Challenge, Round the Lake Regatta of this last weekend. It was a success in many ways. We had 15 sailboats competing (actually 18 signed up). Bob Cole will go into more detail in this Newsletter.
Our very own, Dave Moring, on his MC Scow came in first over-all. .... Congratulations Dave! Also, enjoy the many photos Jan Schumacher has selected to include.
The event brought in a good financial boost to our treasury and we had a chance to sell some of our merchandise too. The weather was delightful, however, due to the drop-off in wind during the day we had to shorten the course to get finished by 4:30 p.m.. Our Trophies, that Dave Moring procured and Bob Cole presented, were once again a big hit. Rum andsailors are a perfect combination. Like wind on water. Perfection is what we are after. We closed the day at Alfie's Restaurant for a rewarding repast. ...
Our many, many thanks to the Sims for letting us have the event at their wonderful location. And our thanks extend to all the folks who helped pull off this enjoyable event, including Dennis Oldham for officiating the Committee Boat assisted by Kathy Olbekson. Also gratitude to Skip & Lou Archibald for the use of their pontoon boat, "Party Hut", as Committee Boat and Mark & Bobbie Ciraco for setting all of the marks and being our Chase Boat.
Bring on November!

A NOTE FROM THE VICE COMMODORE
The fall sailing series is half done, we only have our November and December races to go.
The wind was light for the Sunset Harbor Challenge 2013 but we managed to get the race completed. There were 15 boats participating in the October 26th “Around the Lake Race.” The results are listed below. First overall was our own David Moring in his MC Scow. John Cole from Lake Eustis was second overall in his Hobie Getaway. Both sailors did an
excellent job to keep moving around the lake in the light winds of 3-7 MPH. After the race and awards, fifteen of us went to Alfie’s to enjoy lively discussions, libations, and good food.
We completed our class on sailing rules, start sequence, and flags in October. There were handouts with definitions and a print out of the flags used during a race to communicate with the sailing competitors. We had a good turn out and there were many good questions asked by those involved. Now it is time to apply our new found knowledge. The rules are designed to make sailing safe when boats are in close proximity to one another. Sailing rules clearly state which boat must keep clear. We hope these classes were fun and informative.
Here is wishing you good sailing.

TREASURER’S REPORT
Greetings fellow OSC members!
It’s been a busy September and October for club activities. I wanted to thank Jan and Art for taking care of my treasurer duties while I was out of town (out of Lower 48, actually). Alaska was beautiful, but I worked way too hard and I missed all of you and sunny, warm Central Florida.
Before the October 26th Race Around the Lake, the OSC combined bank balance was $2,541.91, of which $936.93 was checking and $1,604.98 was savings balance (includes $0.06 cents interest). The checking account balance includes Margartaville Party consumables expenses paid of $150.14.
Between the activities, we sold $80 in merchandise, received $37 for 50/50 raffle and collected $340 in race registration fees. We paid out $118.28 for trophies and labels, and $53.99 in water/beer/ice for the race.
Looking forward to November activities!
