Seattle Mariners -- 2013 Minor League Awards

MLB FUTURES ALL-STAR GAME

The U.S. beat the World 4-2 in the 2013 All-Star Futures Game at Citi Field in New York. Taijuan Walker pitched a scoreless 2nd inning, allowing no hits and one walk. 1B Ji-Man Choi went 0-for-2 for the World Squad. Arizona minor-leaguer Matt Davidson (a high school teammate of Walker) hit a two-run homer for the U.S., and Cubs prospect Arismendy Alcantara homered for the World team. Seattle Mariners minor league pitcher Taijuan Walker and shortstop Brad Miller were selected to play for the U.S. squad in the 15th annual SiriusXM All-Star Futures Game at Citi Field in New York City as part of All-Star weekend. This was Walker’s second consecutive selection on the All-Star Futures roster. INF Ji-Man Choi was added to the World team as a replacement for Rangers catcher Jorge Alfaro, who broke his hand when he was hit by a pitch on Friday. SS Brad Miller was replaced on the U.S. team by D-backs shortstop Chris Owings, since Miller won't be eligible to play now that he's on the Major League roster. Tacoma Rainiers hitting coach Howard Johnson was also part of the U.S. coaching staff. The Mariners have had 30 selections to the Futures Game since its first beginning in 1999. Three players on the current 25-man roster played in the Futures Game in the past: Felix Hernandez (2004), Kendrys Morales (2005) and Michael Saunders (2007). Hernandez (All-Star: 2009, 2011-12; Futures Game: 2004) is one of 99 players to have competed in both the SiriusXM All-Star Futures Game and the Major League Baseball All-Star Game. Major League Baseball, in conjunction with the Major League Baseball Scouting Bureau, MLB.com, Baseball America and the 30 Major League Clubs, selected the 25 players currently on each team. Each Major League organization is represented and players from all full-season Minor Leagues were eligible to participate.

AAA TACOMA RAINIERS – PACIFIC COAST LEAGUE The Rainiers are 55-43 and lead the Pacific Coast League Northern division by 1.0 game over Salt Lake at the All-Star break. Tacoma was 26-20 at home and 29-23 on the road. Since moving into first place on May 29, the Rainiers have owned the top spot in the division for 45 consecutive games. It is the longest Tacoma has held at least a share of first place in the division since the 2005 Rainiers squad held down the top spot for 68 consecutive games from May 4-July 18 of that season. The 55 wins the Rainiers have tallied marks the most first-half victories collected by a Tacoma squad since the 2001 Rainiers recorded 58 wins before the break. The 2001 team went on to win 85 games - the third-most collected in franchise history. At the time of the All-Star Break last season, the Rainiers were the owners of a 38-51 record and were 14.0 games behind first-place Reno in the Pacific Northern standings. Of the 25 players on the Rainiers active roster entering on the current roster at the All-Star Break, 10 were on Tacoma’s Opening Day roster (5 pitchers, 5 position players). Of those 10, only 7 players have remained with the Rainiers since Opening Day (5 pitchers, 2 position players). That also includes 25 players (15 position players, 10 pitchers) that also were listed on the Mariners active roster at some point during the 2013 season. Tacoma has undergone 111 transactions through 98 games played this season. The 2012 Rainiers underwent just 106 transactions over the course of their entire 144-game schedule. LHP Brian Moran and OF Carlos Peguero represented the PCL in the 2013 Dolan Auto Group Triple-A All-Star Game. This year’s event, which pitted PCL All-Stars against All-Stars from the International League was held at Aces Ballpark in Reno, Nevada. Moran, 24, earned his first All-Star selection in his second season with the Rainiers. Peguero, 26, is also set to make his first Triple-A All-Star appearance in his 8th season since signing with the Mariners as a non-drafted free agent in 2005. This season marks the 2nd in as many years that the Rainiers have had 2 players featured in the Triple-A All-Star Game. The Rainiers wrapped up the first half batting .269 (917x3410) with 542 runs scored, 192 doubles, 27 triples, 99 home runs and 505 RBI. Tacoma’s 99 home runs ranked 2nd in the PCL, while the team’s 524 runs scored were the league’s 3rd-most through the first 98 games. RHP Brian Sweeney led the Rainiers with 8 win, while LH James Paxton recorded 6 wins to rank 2nd on the team. Tacoma’s pitchers had a 4.34 ERA (421 ER, 872.2 IP), while walking 302 and striking out 767. The Rainiers pitching staff ranked 2nd in innings pitched (872.2) and wins (55) and 4th in strikeouts (767). RHP Taijuan Walker was promoted to Tacoma from Double-A Jackson and made his Triple-A debut on June 25 vs. Fresno at Cheney Stadium. He recorded the win vs. the Grizzlies, allowing only 3 hits and striking out 4 in 6.0 innings in his debut. Walker tossed 14.0 scoreless innings over his first 3 AAA starts, before allowing a solo home run in the 5th inning on July 7 at Salt Lake. Overall he is 2-0 with a 0.56 ERA (1 ER, 16.0 IP) in 3 starts with Tacoma at the ASG break. Walker is currently the youngest player in the PCL this season and 2nd-youngest in Triple-A. Walker joined the Rainiers roster with the 7th-best ERA in the Southern League (2.46/24 ER, 84.0 IP). The 20-year-old ranked 1st in the SL in strikeouts (96) and 3rd in opponent batting average (.195, 58x298) and innings pitched (84.0). Also amongst Southern League starters he ranked first in SO/9IP ratio (10.29). He was ranked by Baseball America as the No. 2 prospect in the Mariners farm system entering the season, and was listed as the No. 2 right-handed pitching prospect in the minors by MLB.com. LHP Danny Hultzen went 4-1 with a 2.20 ERA (7 ER, 28.2 IP) in 5 starts with Tacoma. He has spent the majority of the season on the disabled list after being diagnosed with diagnosed a left rotator cuff strain and tendinitis on April 26. Hultzen made one rehab start with the AZL Mariners on June 22 vs. AZL Royals (5.0,3,1,1,0,8) before being reinstated from the DL on June 26. He recorded the win in Tacoma’s 2-0 victory over Las Vegas on June 27 (6.0,2,0,0,1,6), but was scratched from his next start and placed back on the DL on July 7. LHP James Paxton finished 2nd on the team with 6 wins as the All-Star break, going 6-7 with a 4.58 ERA (50 ER, 98.1 IP) in 19 starts with the Rainiers. Amongst PCL starters, he ranked 5th with averaging 8.8 strikeouts per 9.0 innings. Paxton recorded a season-high 11 strikeouts on June 22 vs. Fresno (6.0,3,0,0,1,11). It marked his 9th career start recording at least 10 strikeouts (last: 11, 5/13/13 at New Orleans). Paxton also tossed his first career shutout as the Tacoma Rainiers blanked the Tucson Padres 7-0 at Kino Veterans Memorial Stadium on July 8 (9.0,5,0,0,2,4). Paxton limited the Padres to 5 hits, all singles, and walked 2 with 4 strikeouts over a career-high 9.0 innings of work. His 9.0-inning shutout win was the first recorded by a Rainiers pitcher since fellow LH Chris Seddon tossed 9.0 scoreless frames in a win at Colorado Springs on June 15, 2010. Prior to that start, the longest start of Paxton’s career was 7.0 innings (Aug. 12, 2011 vs. Huntsville). RHP Logan Bawcom led all Mariners farmhands with 16 saves, while ranking T5th in the PCL. He held opponents scoreless in 29 of 36 appearances, limiting opponents to a .213 average (34x160), while walking 18 and striking out 44. He is 0-2 with 16 saves and a 2.35 ERA (6 ER, 23.0 IP) 18 save opportunities, including holding opponents scoreless in 16-of-18 games. Of his 16 saves, he has tossed more than an inning 6 times. LH reliever Brian Moran went 2-3 with 4 saves and a 2.54 ERA in 34 appearances with Tacoma. Amongst relievers in the PCL, Moran had the lowest walk to strikeout ration (1.57), while ranking 2nd in highest strikeouts per 9.0 innings (12.52). He struck out 64 batters, which led all Rainiers relievers and ranked 2nd on the team behind Paxton’s 97 strikeouts. Moran recorded at least 1 strikeout in 27 of 34 appearances, including 21 games with at least 2 strikeouts. He struck out a season-high 5 batters twice: April 6 at Fresno (2.0,0,0,0,0,5) and May 31 at Colorado (2.1,1,0,0,0,5). Singling on the first pitch he saw in the fifth inning, Triunfel completed Tacoma’s first cycle since Raul Ibañez accomplished the feat on Aug. 19, 1997 vs. Albuquerque. He also is the first player in the Pacific Coast League to cycle since Nashville’s Caleb Gindl on July 10, 2011, also against Albuquerque. Triunfel achieved the act in his first 4 at-bats of the game. He tripled with one out in the first inning, led off the bottom of the third with a double, then homered in the fourth. He completed the cycle in the fifth inning after lining a single down the right field line. Triunfel snapped an 0-for-20 stretch coming into the game and was the first Rainiers player since Michael Saunders on July 30, 2011 vs. Las Vegas to record 5 hits in a game.
