Shaping Your Luminato

A Gift to the World, and to Ourselves

More Than Meets the Eye

Board of Directors

Since its inception, we’ve always thought of the Luminato Festival, with its unique multidisciplinary verve, as a surfeit of riches; but even some of our most ardent supporters sometimes find the Festival to be, as the French say, an embarras de choix, with a bountiful but somewhat overwhelming number of options. So, we encourage you to treat this 2013 season brochure as both an immediate call to action and a long-term guide. Whether it’s the Mark Morris Dance Group or Kid Koala’s Space Cadet, Marina Abramovic or Gob Squad’s Super Night Shot, plan ahead for your must-see events. Then take some time to design the rest of your experience. Look closely and you’ll discover that every day throughout the Festival, there’s always that little something extra—a lecture, a visual arts installation, an amazing musician at the Hub, a gourmet surprise—to enhance and expand your Festival adventure. What’s your Luminato? Dig in and find out.

Janice PriceCEO, Luminato Festival

Just over eight years ago, when the Luminato Festival was still a dream waiting to unfold, co-founder David Pecaut expressed the wish that the Festival would become a calling card for Toronto, a vibrant invitation “to the world to join us in celebrating creativity.” The dream has since been fulfilled six times over, the wish more than granted; but in the process something magical has happened. While the Luminato Festival remains both for Toronto and from Toronto, it has also become part of the city, woven into its very fabric, its contributions to our landscape and our lives even greater than the sum of its artistic brilliance. Yes, it is a gift we give the world, yet is also one we can all treasure.

Tony GaglianoCo-founder & Chair, Luminato FestivalExecutive Chairman & CEOSt. Joseph Communications

It is a universal truth, one we all learn at an early age, thatbeauty is in the eye of the beholder. Every June there isso much beauty to behold during the Luminato Festival, and 2013 promises to be more glorious than ever. For tendays and nights, Toronto will again be transformed into akaleidoscope of colour, light and incredible creative energy. But much of the Festival’s beauty isn’t immediately visible.Equally captivating is the thrill of discovering new works andnew artists, of continually having your curiosity piqued andyour imagination ignited. L’Oréal Canada and Luminato havebeen partners in creativity since the dawn of the Festival, and we are proud of the part we play in bringing suchbeauty to light this and every year.

A Festival is a Total Work of Art

“Imagination creates reality,” said Richard Wagner, born 200 years ago. It still does today, and will in June at the Luminato Festival. It is the imagination of the artists that becomes the collective imagination of the audiences, that transforms the city and ourselves, creating a new reality. After you experience great art, nothing need be the same anymore, just as nothing is the same when you fall in love. Music, dance, architecture and theatre are all the children of love. Art needs foremost to be felt; if our hearts don’t understand it, our minds will not.

I have always been fascinated by the idea of the total work of art: the fusion of different art forms to create something greater than themselves. A new reality, something never experienced before. A festival is a total work of art. To me a festival is like an orchestra. There are many different players—different artists, different art forms: literature, music, dance, visual arts etc.—that the Luminato Festival brings to you. The individual players know their parts and rehearse them separately in different rooms, but when you bring them together under one roof, they create a sound that is bigger than their individual parts; and only when you bring them together do you know that the sound is right. This is what the Festival is. It is more than its individual parts. It is about getting lost in the sound that resonates with the city and its inhabitants, and echoes across Canada and outward to the rest of the world. Fusing different art forms has been the guiding principle of many of the projects that we bring to you this year, blurring the boundaries, blurring the locations where you expect to experience art and questioning the integrity of the relationship between the artist and the work, all while making the audience a conspirator in creation.

Kid Koala unfolds his video-headset-puppet-music spectacle Space Cadet under the stars in David Pecaut Square. In addition to appealing to the ears and eyes, he will add the element of scent via a Luminato-commissioned collaboration with International Flavors and Fragrances, the greatest creator of perfumes in the world. Come and smell his music!

Robert Wilson, Marina Abramovic, Willem Dafoe and Antony unfold The Life and Death of Marina Abramovic, creating a new form of theatre and performance.

And you can become a performance artist yourself by enlisting, day or night, in the MarinaAbramovicInstitute-Prototype, a massive new installation by Marina premiering at the Festival. As she puts it, “You give me time, I give you experience!”

With Stockpile, nine Canadian artists will create one spectacular piece of interactive art that transforms everyday objects. Play the game every day at Brookfield Place!

Viktor&Rolf, the Mark Morris Dance Group, A Literary Picnic, Future Tastes of Toronto, the Toronto Symphony Orchestra (with an outdoor, all Wagner and Verdi program also celebrating the greatest living Canadian composer R. Murray Schafer), Atom Egoyan, TimesTalks Luminato, Ronnie Burkett, Jason Collett and a music mob are only a few of the other attractions to catch your imagination.

“When the legends die, the dreams end, there is no more greatness,” said Tecumseh, who died the same year Wagner and Verdi were born. So, let the dreams begin!

k-os

Before Kanye, before Drake, before Frank Ocean, there wask-os. Toronto-born, Trinidad-raised rapper/singer/songwriter/producer k-os burst onto the musical scene in 1993 withthe hit single “Musical Essence.” In 2004, he released JoyfulRebellion, featuring the standout track, “Crabbuckit.” Almosta decade later, k-os is twice platinum, has toured with Drake, recorded with The Chemical Brothers, won multiple Juno andMuchMusic Video Awards, and was a 2005 Grammy nominee.

Provocative and fearless, he is back with his new release Black on Blonde, a daring mix of both hip hop and rock tunes. It is Canadian hip hop’s first double album and the only thing large enough to contain k-os’ big musical ideas.

Serena Ryder

Toronto-born singer-songwriter Serena Ryder is an artistadored by fans, peers and critics alike due to her raw and earnest songwriting talent and electric live performances. She has received numerous accolades including three prestigious Juno Awards, as well as gold selling status for If Your Memory Serves You Well (2007) and Is it O.K. (2009). Ryder is poised for major international stardom with the release of the Juno-nominated Harmony, heralded as “the lushest, boldest album of her career” by The Globe and Mail. Making her Luminato Festival debut, Ryder will perform favourites from across her career, including “Weak in the Knees” and the mega-hit “Stompa,” nominated for Single of the Year at this year’s Juno Awards.

The Life and Death of Marina Abramovic

Robert Wilson, Marina Abramovic, Antony, Willem Dafoe

North American Premiere

Marina Abramovic has earned international renown and acclaim for the boldness and startling originality of her work. But when Abramovic decided to put her life story onstage, she opted to hand the reins to another avant-garde genius, internationally acclaimed director and visual artist Robert Wilson. The remarkable result, The Life and Death of Marina Abramovic, features Abramovic in dual roles—as herself and her mother—and Willem Dafoe as the narrator and her male counterpart, with music written and performed by Antony of Antony and the Johnsons, and costumes by Jacques Reynaud.

Following its premiere at Manchester International Festival and a sold-out European tour, this groundbreaking achievement, tracing Abramovic’s journey from her troubled Serbian childhood to her ascension to the world’s artistic elite, makes its North American debut at the Luminato Festival.

“...a towering figure in the world of experimental theater.”—The New York Times on Robert Wilson

Commissioned by Manchester International Festival and TeatroReal Madrid with Theater Basel, Art Basel, Holland Festival, Salford City Council and deSingel, Antwerp.

MAI — Prototype

Marina Abramovic

World Premiere

As part of their ongoing investigation into the work of French/Swiss artist Jean Tinguely, Amsterdam’s Métamatic Research Initiative has commissioned and produced with the Luminato Festival the MarinaAbramovicInstitute – Prototype, a singularly remarkable installation by performance artist Marina Abramovic. MAI – Prototype will be the largest expression to date of what the artist calls the Marina Abramovic Method. Across a series of interlocking pavilions, audience members are guided through exercises based on Abramovic’s past work. Rather than creating the performance, Abramovic empowers the audience to craft their own experience, as participants don white lab coats and headphones, and disconnect from the outside world. Afterwards, they’ll be encouraged to share their thoughts about the experience via social media. Live streaming of the exhibition will extend the MAI – Prototype to other Festival locations.

Produced by the Luminato Festival with the Métamatic Research Initiative.

Dolls by Viktor&Rolf

North American Premiere

Viktor&Rolf are widely recognized and respected for their conceptual glamour and provocative creations. At their core is the undying vision to create spectacular beauty and unexpected elegance, spanning their womenswear and menswear lines, accessories and fragrances, including FLOWERBOMB and SPICEBOMB.

Among the most notable presentations of Viktor&Rolf ’s work was their 15th anniversary retrospective, The House of Viktor&Rolf, staged at the Barbican Art Gallery in London, England. Viktor&Rolf ’s giant doll’s house accommodated miniature mannequins that were Victorian dolls dressed in handcrafted, precisely scaled-down garments.

For the Dolls by Viktor&Rolf exhibition, Viktor&Rolf have proposed a new, unique catwalk platform, specially crafted for the ROM’s Spirit House space. The scenography of the exhibition is designed in collaboration with the Dutch-Belgium Studio Job, founded in 2000 by Mr. & Mrs. Smeets, world famous for creating a new approach to contemporary design.

“The intriguing exhibition poses the question of whether Viktor&Rolf are designers or conceptual artists who work their surreal ideas in fashion.” —The New York Times

The Courtyard Revue at Luminato

Hosted by Jason Collett

One frosty winter night in 2007, the Basement Revue, brainchild of singer, songwriter and master showman Jason Collett, was born at Toronto’s Dakota Tavern. A critical and popular sensation, the Basement Revue features the best of Canadian literary and musical talent in a cross-pollinating variety show. The Luminato Festival debuted that same year, and has annually earned global renown for its stellar mélange of local, national and international artists. The Courtyard Revue at Luminato fuses these two creative forces. It is the late night edition of the Festival.

Each night, The Courtyard Revue will cap off with a dance party featuring a secret mutant wedding band. Hosted by Collett, this scintillating after-hours collaboration will maintain the Basement Revue’s tradition of keeping each night’s lineup a mystery. Impromptu surprises are essential to the nighttime magic and, since The Courtyard Revue will also serve as the official after-party for Luminato Festival artists, there’s no telling who you’ll be rubbing shoulders with or see take a guest turn onstage.

Don’t miss the season’s hottest new pop-up music venue, only at the Berkeley Street Theatre during the Festival.

Future Tastes of Toronto: At the Kids’ Table

June 15-16

Throughout the Luminato Festival’s opening weekend, the city’s best chefs will be showcasing the diversity of Toronto through culinary and other collaborations with kids.

What’s happening to the city’s culinary talent? They’re turning the art of cooking on its generational head. For several weeks leading up to the Festival, local Toronto chefs will be working with six classes of grades 4-6 students, sharing details about their gastronomic adventures and the culinary delights they will be showcasing. But the chefs and their young apprentices will be sharing more than just great food. Central to the experience will be the Kids’ Table, a communal eating space where the kids will divulge their behind-the-scenes knowledge about the chefs and the food being presented.

Under the creative direction of the celebrated performance company Mammalian Diving Reflex, in collaboration with Madeleine Collective and noted foodie Joshna Maharaj, the youngsters will be supporting (and extolling) more than 25 chefs. Count on a cacophonous cornucopia of fun and flavours in which the entire family can indulge.

The Power of Mutual Gaze

On average, people only look into each other’s eyes for a maximum of eight seconds—only lovers and people who are about to kill each other lock eyes for longer. Drawing on Marina Abramovic’s interest in the prolonged mutual gaze, as explored in The Life and Death of Marina Abramovic (see page 10), this discussion brings together facilitator and author Misha Glouberman, neuroscientist Suzanne Dikker from the Sackler Institute, and experimental videographer Amie Siegel.

Magic & Music Performed by Rafael Benatar

Canadian Premiere

Great music performances are often described as magical, and amazingfeats of magic are as transfixing as stellar music works. Rafael Benatar isunique in his ability to unite the two disciplines. Benatar is a world-classmusician who studied classical guitar and subsequently gained equalproficiency with the lute. But his enthusiasm for magic proved just asintense, a desire he satisfied by studying with master magicians ArturoAscanio and Juan Tamariz. Now Benatar intertwines his passions inCompositions, a dazzling blend of Renaissance and Baroque music,Spanish guitar and magic that mystifyingly proves that the whole isindeed greater than the sum of its parts.

Concerto for Piano & Pasteboards

Written by Miguel Puga & Miguel Aparicio and Directed by Miguel Puga

Canadian Premiere

This unusual concert with two players, four hands, a piano and a deck of cards began when a magician, counting the white keys of a grand piano, noted that there were 52, the same number as cards in a deck. Joining forces with a musician, the two blurred the boundaries of their artistic domains and discovered how objects so fundamentally different could be used to bring forth deep emotions of a remarkably similar nature—the Primordial Spirit—that “something” so mysterious and elusive, yet unquestionably real, that all audiences crave. Miguel Puga is the magician, joined by pianist Paz Sabater and Luis Britos as the Primordial Spirit.

Chamber Magic

Written & Performed by Steve Cohen

Canadian Premiere

For those who only believe what they see, Steve Cohen invites you to come close, really close. A master magician whose repertoire is designed to engage the mind as much as the eye, Cohen’s Chamber Magic hearkens back to an era when wealthy patrons secured the services of elite wonder-workers to transform a salon into a stage and mesmerize family and friends with magic. Known as the “Millionaires’ Magician,” Cohen has performed the role of a society performer for over a decade at the Waldorf Astoria in New York. As the show is designed to be experienced up close, fewer than 70 patrons will be admitted to each performance. With an adults-only mandate, audience members are asked to dress to impress in cocktail attire.

L’Allegro, il Penseroso ed il Moderato

Mark Morris Dance Group Featuring the Tafelmusik Baroque Orchestra and Chamber Choir, Music Director Jeanne Lamon, Conducted by Jane Glover

Canadian Premiere

Since its creation in 1988, choreographer Mark Morris’ legendary L’Allegro, il Penseroso ed il Moderato has earned global recognition as his company’s crowning achievement. Morris’ singular interpretation of the oratorio, combining Handel’s music with John Milton’s cosmic poetry and William Blake’s luminous paintings, becomes a vibrant blend of dance, music, poetry, scenery, costume and lighting design. This dazzling evening-length work boasts two-dozen dancers, a 26-member chorus, four vocal soloists and an orchestra. Exalted as “one of the great dance works of the twentieth century” by The New Yorker and “a modern miracle” by the Huffington Post, L’Allegro is at once joyous, exhilarating and profound. Now celebrating its 25th anniversary, Morris’ bold, brilliant masterpiece makes its Canadian debut at the Festival.

L’Allegro Movement Project

Mark Morris Dance Group and Dancing with Parkinson’s

In the months leading up to the Luminato Festival, dancers and  teachers from Mark Morris Dance Group’s ground-breaking  Dance for PD® program will collaborate with the Toronto Dancing with Parkinson’s group and local elementary school students from Nelson Mandela Park PS and Winchester Junior PS to create L’Allegro Movement Project.

Using thematic and structural elements from L’Allegro, il  Penseroso ed il Moderato as the basis for the movement  creation, participants will explore the choreographic, poetic and musical elements of Mark Morris’ signature work. Through this collaborative, intergenerational initiative, young students and participants with Parkinson’s disease will be empowered to explore and celebrate the expressive possibilities of movement through dance and music.

A select team of young filmmakers will document L’Allegro Movement Project, highlighting  the creative process. Video excerpts will be available on luminatofestival.com throughout this period and the completed short film will premiere as part of the Regent Park Film Festival in the fall of 2013.

The performance of L’Allegro Movement Project will feature the Tafelmusik Baroque Orchestra and Chamber Choir and soloists.

Marina Abramovic— The Past, The Present and The Future of Performance Art: A Lecture

For four decades, Marina Abramovic has used her own body as a medium, pushing her physical limits while boldly pushing the limits of performance art. Her career retrospective, presented at the Museum of Modern Art in 2010, included The Artist Is Present, a 736-hour and 30-minute silent piece, during which she sat immobile. The MoMA installation attracted more than 750,000 visitors, including the likes of Lady Gaga.

In this lecture, Abramovic will review her work to date andexamine the art of collaboration (including her landmark union with Robert Wilson for The Life and Death of Marina Abramovic). She will also delve into the future of performance art and discuss the development of her performance and education centre, the Marina Abramovic Institute, in Hudson, New York.

Reggae Around the World

Long Shen Dao

Think reggae is exclusively the purview of Rastafarians? Think again. All six members of this Beijing group, making their North American debut, have earned solo success across various genres. But they come together to embrace the reggae spirit in a distinctly vibrant way that draws on rock, hip hop and ska, combined with traditional Chinese instruments like the guzheng (zither). Aptly, the group’s name translates as The Way of the Dragon God, for they are ferociously talented and heavenly sounding.

Maxi Priest

Since the release of his smash-hit cover of Cat Stevens’ “Wild World,” Maxi Priest has become one of the most acclaimed reggae singers on the planet. His ability to blend hard-core reggae vibes with more mainstream pop has led to seven gold albums and groundbreaking collaborations with Roberta Flack, Shaggy, Sly & Robbie, Beenie Man and Beres Hammond. Maxi makes his Luminato Festival debut with an intoxicating mix of hits and new material.

DakhaBrakha

Meaning “give and take” in the old Ukrainian language, the Kyiv-based quartet DakhaBrakha has crafted an entirely fresh and unexpected form of World Music. The brainchild of avant-garde theatre director Vladyslav Troitskyi, the group began experimenting with traditional Ukrainian folk music, adding Indian, Arabic, African, Russian and even Australian instrumentation to create its sensational trans-national sound. DakhaBrakha makes their North American debut at the Luminato Festival.

Bombino

Though barely 30 years old, Tuareg guitarist Omara “Bombino” Moctar has witnessed two rebellions by his people in Niger, and is now devoted to helping heal with his anthems of peace. Unswerving in his commitment to dignity and generosity, Bombino has earned international recognition for his moving “ishoumar” songs, gaining the respect of, among others, Angelina Jolie, Keith Richards and Dan Auerbach of The Black Keys, who produced his recent Nonesuch release.

Laurie Anderson

As experimental performance artists go, few can match the pioneering sound of Laurie Anderson. Originally trained as a sculptor, Anderson began extending her interpretive skills to music in the late 1960s, debuting the celebrated Duets on Ice in 1975. In the 1980s, she earned wide recognition with the single “O Superman,” included on the acclaimed Big Science. Her latest album, Homeland, covers various live performances, including a landmark 2008 Luminato-commissioned event in Toronto with iconic musician Lou Reed. Anderson will perform her work in a rare and intimate evening setting.

Amadou and Mariam

Amadou Bagayoko and Mariam Doumbia, known as “the blind couple from Mali,” are beyond category, serving up a mix of traditional Malian sounds, electric guitar, Cuban brass, Indian tablas, gutsy blues-soaked vocals, dense African rhythms and pointed lyrics. After meeting as teenagers and marrying 32 years ago, the duo has circled the globe with their scintillating sound, sharing stages with Stevie Wonder and U2. Their latest album Folila features guest appearances by Santigold and the Scissor Sisters’ Jake Shears following the massive success of Manu Chao’s work on their album Dimanche à Bamako.

There are the blues that laid the foundation for R&B and soul. There are the blues that blended with jazz as they traveled together from the deep south to the urban north. Then there are the country blues, whose roots are perhaps deepest of all. Among modern practitioners few, if any, can match the interpretive skills of Denver-born master Corey Harris. Across six albums, including his dazzling new Fulton Blues, Harris layers modern musical ideas atop hallowed country blues traditions to create an exceptional sound as bold as it is respectful.

In the magnificent Verdi and Wagner choruses, the TSO is joined by the glorious voices of the Toronto Mendelssohn Choir. The concert will also include an energetic work by the great Canadian composer R. Murray Schafer who turns 80 this year.

Don’t be surprised if a rousing version of “Happy Birthday,” done up in grand TSO style, also finds its way onto the Square.

Lunchtime Illuminations

Monday, June 17

It’s Yorkville in the 1960s. Nicholas Jennings worked behind the counter at the Riverboat Coffeehouse where he saw some of the earliest performances of Neil Young, Bruce Cockburn, Joni Mitchell and Murray McLauchlan. He joins McLauchlan and Sylvia Tyson to talk about the era that brought to light some of the most amazing musical talents of our times. The perfect appetizer for the Joni Mitchell celebration at Massey Hall on June 18 and 19.

Friday, June 14

Join Kid Koala, the mastermind behind Space Cadet, with author and musician Buck 65 and screenwriter Elan Mastai for an interdisciplinary conversation about space, the art of collaboration, and mixing so-called high and low culture.

Wednesday, June 19

During this transformative discussion, Toronto-based master magician David Ben and the Millionaires’ Magician, Steve Cohen, will be joined onstage by a molecular gastronomist and chef who knows a thing or two about magical effects in the kitchen. Magic happens every day, it is about believing what you see, taste, or smell. (David Ben advises that all who attend must swear a vow of secrecy!)

Thursday, June 20

The Luminato Festival presents a very special lunchtime talk hosted by Gillian Smith, Executive Director and CEO of the Institute for Canadian Citizenship, in conjunction with that morning’s special citizenship ceremony. She’ll be joined by authors Ravi Jain and Farzana Doctor to talk about new beginnings and how coming to Canada informed their art, their experiences as new Canadians, and what it means to be a citizen.

Friday, June 21

The Luminato Festival has brought together nine contemporary Canadian artists from across the country to create a singular work of art: Stockpile, a life-sized human claw machine that will distribute donated, pre-loved objects, along with other surprises! Come meet the artists and hear them in conversation with Denise Markonish, the curator at the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art (Mass MoCA).

Tuesday, June 18

Gob Squad, the artistic collective from Germany and the UK, creates performances and videos that “search for beauty in the everyday.” They’re joined by playwright, director and co-founder of Theatre Brouhaha, Kat Sandler, to talk about what drives the next generation of artists to work in theatre, and how to expand our notion of the theatre into city spaces and attract new audiences.

Arts & Crafts, Regent Park School of Music andthe Luminato Festival – A Collaboration in Song

In celebration of their 10th anniversary, Toronto-based record label Arts & Crafts collaborates with the Luminato Festival and the Regent Park School of Music on a new project, resulting in two remarkable performances.

Leading up to the Festival, students from the Regent Park School of Music youth band are learning favourite songs from the catalogue of select Arts & Crafts artists. During the workshop and rehearsal process, these artists will sing with and mentor the students, reinforcing their shared commitment to artistic expression and community. This will culminate in a joint concert in the Regent Park community and at the outdoor stage at the Festival Hub.

A project of the Luminato’s Festival’s Education and Outreach program.

Based on the Art on the Move project developed by Arts Etobicoke and Lakeshore Arts, and further inspired by the Luminato Festival’s guiding principles, students at the Karen Kain School of the Arts are working with artist Melissa McGrath. Together, they are creating a collaborative portrait design that will be wrapped onto a Kia vehicle, thus becoming a moving canvas of the youths’ vision.

Deepening their experience, students will also research Festival artists and write narrative reflections and reviews about Luminato Festival events and performances—some of which will be featured in the Light News, the daily Festival newspaper, and on luminatofestival.com. The student-designed Kia vehicle will be used as the official distribution point for the Light News at the Festival Hub in David Pecaut Square.

Produced in partnership with Arts Etobicoke and Lakeshore Arts.

A project of the Luminato Festival’s Education and Outreach program.
