Beyond the concepts of all beliefs there exists one universal truth that guides every living being. It is not a personality or a single being, but rather a life force with unlimited love and intelligence that lives within each of us.

A place where like-minded souls gather to find answers to all of life’s great questions

A place to learn how to listen to the inner voice that guides and comforts

A place to reason, question, meditate and contemplate

A place to learn how to “live in the present moment” and open the mind to all possibilities

A place to develop a personalized path to leading a spiritual life

Sunday Mornings from 11am to 12:30pm 11 Goddard, Irvine, CA 92618

Lead by Rev. Danielle Marie Founder and Spiritual Director of the Temple of Light Spiritual Community

Kirtan awakens the soul to its natural position, connects us with higher energy, clears the heart of all the distractions that can stress one living in this high‐tech age, and at the very least, make a person feel better about their day through the wonderful music and singing.

Kirtan is an energizing and joyful group practice of singing simple chants or mantras that “tune you up” vibrationally and bring about a feeling of peace and calm usually associated with hours of deep meditation.

It’s the “fast track” to a quiet mind and all the benefits that go with it.

Kirtan is singing mantras. Mantras themselves have vibrations, so when you repeat them they produce a kind of vibration within the body that shakes all the molecules and cells in the body, they literally rearrange your entire personality.

5 Essential Elements to Growing A Successful Holistic Healing Practiceby Rev. Danielle Marie Hewitt,Founder of Temple of Light Spiritual Community, Director of the Academy of Light School for Healing Arts Practitioners, Publisher ofRadiance magazine, Mentor to Holistic and Healing Arts Practitioners

Would you like a full book of clients with appointments scheduled a week or two in advance? Would you like to be making $10,000 a month or more?

The cold hard fact is that currently 80% to 90% of Holis-tic or Healing Arts Practitioners are not completely and abundantly financially self-sustaining. The good news is there are five basic principles you can learn and fol-low that will help you to break out of the statistic! If you follow these five steps and play at level 10 on all of them you are destined for success. Here is how to make that success easy and fast rather than difficult and slow.

The biggest mistake most practitioners in the healing arts and holistic health make is to begin a practice with-out first aligning the supporting tools that work. All the tools have to be in place otherwise you will be spend-ing energy trying to build your practice with reduced return on your investment. Do you currently feel like you are getting in a car, turning on the ignition, putting it in gear, releasing the parking brake but it’s just not moving ahead? You are likely missing one or more of the five following essential elements.

ESSENTIAL ELEMENT #1

Establish your niche and be able to answer the ques-tion “What do you do?” clearly and succinctly in a way that establishes you as an expert meeting an urgent need.

When you answer the “What do you do?” question in a manner that describes the work you do and at the

same time defines your ideal client you can immediate-ly establish if someone you just met is a potential cli-ent. Attracting the clients most willing to do work with you is a numbers game and a process of simply finding them. If there are 100 people out there who can work with you it’s possible you may have to talk to 400 peo-ple in order to filter through those who are not poten-tial clients. It is ineffective and inefficient to spend a lot of time and energy engaging in the cultivation and con-sultation process if they are in the 300 who are not a potential client. Having an effective method of quickly determining if someone is a client is imperative.

When you have your “What do you do?” question pol-ished and powerfully delivered, you will know when to continue a conversation with someone about how you may be able to serve them or be clued into changing the topic to the weather or the latest episode of a hot television program. By having this ability to filter who is and who is not a potential client, you will save time and energy, not to mention the added benefit of avoiding

continued on page 6 >>

6 Radiance July/August 2013

sharing what you do in detail only to be turned down.

Example: I received a call from a home repair service company. The moment the sales person learned I lived in an apartment he said “Thank you, have a wonderful day” and hung up. I was not his cli-ent and he swiftly moved on to the next call.

The “What do you do?” ques-tion is determined by estab-lishing a niche (an area where you specialize, particularly excel in or have great passion for) with the most compelling urgent need being met by what you do. The more ur-gent the problem you describe, the more you are going to get someone’s attention. You are creating a compel-ling “store front” to get them to walk in the front door of your shop by showing them you have what they need. Describe who your ideal client is, then describe how you help them. To clarify here are two examples of answers to the question of what do you do.

• BadExample:IamaCPA

• Good Example: You know how some people arenot maximizing investments and tax saving strate-gies and as a result are experiencing reduced earn-ings and paying too much income tax? I help people find the most beneficial retirement plans for their life style and keep their income taxes to a minimum.

In this second example the ideal client was clearly de-scribed and an urgent need was addressed and solved. There was no mention of the process, being a CPA, only the problem and the solution. You can also skip the first part and start with the “I help people…..” part. This is the first step and everything you do afterward is built on it. Your polished statement will immediately de-termine if someone needs what you do with urgency thereby maximizing their interest in you. If they do not lean in, make eye contact, or show some sign you have their attention when you make your statement, they don’t have a need for what you do. They are not your client. Redirect the conversation to something else or move on to next person to talk to with a gracious exit.

ESSENTIAL ELEMENT #2

Learn how to powerfully connect so potential clients become clients.

After mastering the “What do you do?” question and you have someone in front of you interested in what you say, the following five steps will determine if they convert to a client. As I learned these five parts of how to connect with a client from my mentors Jesse Koren and Sharla Jacobs of Thrive Academy, it occurred to me that these five steps are precisely the same steps taken inside a client session.

In a client session there is the greeting and connection and the ceremony and ritual of the beginning of our work together. The client tells me what they are strug-gling with and I listen and take it all in. I give them some encouragement and then start providing ways in which we can approach the situation. When they see feasibil-ity, I invite them to make the change. When connecting with a potential client the same protocol applies in a micro version. If you apply this model in the same way, you will have a much better way of knowing if someone is your client.

• Firstmakeasolidconnectionwiththemwithbyatouch of the hand, eye contact, a smile. Let them know they have your undivided attention. Ignore your cell phone or any other potential interruptions. Whether or not they continue to talk to you will be based on this initial impression. Are you profession-ally dressed? Do you appear happy to meet them?

Do you appear rushed or do you give the impression that you have the time to talk to them?

• Then, beofservicebyaskingthemquestionsaboutwhat is happening to them in their life as a result of their circumstances. This is where the real problem is defined and will establish whether or not you are the right practitioner for them. They should be do-ing most of the talking. Curtail your song and dance about who you are and what you do. If they don’t feel like you are listening to them or care about their feelings you have lost them.

• Aftertheyhavesharedtheirproblem, validateandacknowledge them. Let them know you heard them and you understand their experience. This is the beginning of establishing their trust that you “get them.”

• If they are still engaged and connectedwith you,ask questions about where they want to go and how they see themselves changing their situation. This is the final qualification process whether or not you are the right practitioner for them. Start of-fering them an image of how to get from “A,” the problem,to“B,”thesolution. Findouthowcom-mitted they are to improving their situation in get-ting to “B.” By describing “B” you are establishing that you are qualified to get them there.

• Finally, ifyoufeelit’samatchandonlyifyoufeelitsmatch and not because you need the money, and if they are truly committed, make them an offer of your services. If you have done the above steps very well, chances are you will get a yes.

ESSENTIAL ELEMENT #3

Branding, Branding and more Branding

Once you have established your niche and learned how to fully connect to potential clients, it’s important to ensure that your business cards, website, flyers, and any other copy you use fully, completely, and congru-ently communicate your niche and how you serve peo-ple. Create branding and copy so that when potential clients read your materials it clearly aligns with your “What do you do” statement and has a consistency that shows you are committed, organized, profes-sional, and can be trusted to help them. Just like the heightened level of energy you feel when you tell peo-ple what you do, your business cards, flyers, website, and other copy you create should be consistent or you will confuse your potential clients of who you are and what you do or worse, you will not look like an expert orseriouscontenderforthesolvingtheirproblem.Fol-low these steps:

• Determineyourbusinessname.Use your own or a fictitious name. If your business name does not describe your urgent problem solved, adopt a tag line that does.

• Design a logo that is a visualrepresentation of all of the above. It’s tempting to grab images from the in-ternet but you will not own the rights to use it. Hire a good graphic designer who will make everything look profes-sional and give you a unique logo that you own.

• GettheURLthatmatchesyourname, the business name or the tag line. If you can’t get one of the three, consider alternative names. The web-site does not have to be fancy, but it does need to be clean, easy to navi-gate and should have the following pages: Home, About, Services/Prod-

ucts,Events/Calendar,Contactusand/oraBlog.Goto other websites of social media and colleagues and reference your website there to increase your “search engine optimization.” The website needs to have fresh content every week so the google ro-bots keep searching it for new information.

• Usesocialmediaandposthelpfultips, information, and relevant shares. Ensure your branding comes through consistently. Post to Facebook, Twitter, etc. at least twice a month.

• Sendoutaweeklyorsemi-monthlynewsletterwithrelevant, real, and helpful information and include social media share buttons. On the home page of the website put a place for visitors to sign up for your newsletter.

• EVERYTHING aboveshould have consistency and flow to it.

ESSENTIAL ELEMENT #4

Expand, Leverage, & Create Access

Having a full book of clients is the fastest and most direct way to build a sustainable in-come. There are a few disad-vantages though. You only get paid when you are actual-ly engaged in a session which does not permit you to eas-ily take a vacation or plan for time off. Leverage your talent so it works for you because even if you have a successful practice unless you have oth-er forms of income related to your work, you only get paid when you are physically working one on one. Some potential clients cannot see their way to your hourly rate and are left with no other way to access you. Creating alternative ways to serve and bring your skills and solutions to those who have your urgent solution resolves both issues. It is impor-tant to give people a way to get to know you so they can establish you as an expert and it also provides them with different price levels of access to your expertise. Ways to leverage your talents are:

• Writeabook–Thisgivespeoplealowerpricepointto access your expertise and provides you with more credibility to do speaking engagements.

• Createworkshops-Youcanmakeamonth’sincomein a weekend.

• Createahomestudycourse–Ahigherpricepointthan the book but less than attendance at a work-shop.

• CreateaCD,DVD,orproductthatisrelevanttoyourwork.

• Book speaking engagements and get paid to dothem or do them free so you can sell your book, home study course, workshop, CD, product, and your personal sessions. The speaking engage-ments should be created to address various time slots, i.e. 2 hour, 1 hour, 30 minutes and 15 minutes.

ESSENTIAL ELEMENT #5

Master the Law of Attraction

Everyone here is familiar with the movie “The Secret” that taught us how to use the Law of Attraction. This law determines the complete order of the universe and of our personal lives through the process of “like attracts like.” By order I mean how and when things materialize. You all know to think positive thoughts to attract the things you want to you, right?

Rev. Danielle Marie is a Master ThetaHealer® who practices a healing art based primarily on ThetaHealing®, but with several personal additions and modifications. Rev. Danielle Marie's sessions are life-changing, creating shifts in her clients' perceptions resulting in the most positive changes imaginable. Rev.

Danielle Marie has been a student of metaphysics since 2000 and studied under several mentors, including Vianna Stibal and Dr. Doreen Virtue. As a metaphysical minister, she believes in the innate intuitive ability gifted to each of us. Teaching this and witnessing healings has become her life's work and passion. She believes we can live free from pain and suffering and be in a constant state of peace and joy.

The problem is we don’t always pay attention to each and every conscious or unconscious thought. There-fore, we can be manifesting with the Laws of Attrac-tion unwittingly, insufficiently, inconsistently, and even carelessly.

We need to remember the Law of Attraction eaves-drops on EVERY single thought and feeling. Whatthoughts have you had about your business today? Have you thought already today something along the lines of “I don’t make enough money,” “It’s too hard to start a business,” or “I’ll never be successful.”

More importantly, some of our limiting or negative thoughts are unconscious. If you have done Steps 1-4

above completely and are playing at level 10 on all of them and you are still not filling up your calendar and bank account, consider that you have some uncon-scious thoughts and feelings redirecting your success elsewhere.

One way to tell is how powerful you feel your desire to be of service in this way. Do you notice any subtle changes in your energy when you think of your busi-ness? I call this the “The Power of the Want.”

That might sound obvious, but you would be surprised how many of you may not be manifesting with this tool kicked into high gear. The want must be strong, it must be true, and, most importantly, it has to come from the heart without anything negative blocking it.

One way to know for sure if you are not using the pow-er of the want to its full capacity is when you close your eyes and imagine your business. Does ANY part of it at all feel even a little bit hard? If it does, then you are not in the full power of the want. Showing up for work ev-ery day and seeing your business thrive should feel easy no matter what stage it’s in.

And, if you have to ask yourself if you are in the power of the want, the answer is “no.” It would like standing

on top of a geyser and feeling the gush of energy or standing one foot to the side of it. You are either in the ride or not, and you know the difference.

Make a commitment to play at level 10 with all five ele-ments and you will have a thriving practice in no time. With anything you set out to accomplish, it is working, growing, and thriving or it is difficult, a struggle, and dying.

If you are having trouble with any of these areas, con-sider getting a business coach to assist you. We all need help from time to time and there is no reason to strug-gle alone.

I work in many different capacities as the founder of the Temple of Light, but my world came together and I was able to play at level 10 when I got my personal “What do you do?” statement down. Things be-gan to change and shift in ways I could not have imagined possible and everything about what I did from that point on took on a new meaning.

“I help holistic and healing arts practitio-ners play at level 10 in all aspects of their work so they can create a thriving busi-ness and show up to do the work they

were destined to.” Call me at the Temple of Light if this is your urgent problem.

With love and light, Namaste.

11 Laws to Help You Reach the Higher Levels of YourselfBy Guy Finley

If we really want to grow inwardly, we must choose to go inward; only in the true Presence Moment can

we realize the truth of ourselves that does, indeed, set us free. Such higher discoveries that set the stage for reclaiming your True Self call for higher learning. Think of each of the following eleven laws as individual magic strands of a flying carpet. Make it your aim to weave them together in your mind. Then watch how these lessons combine to effortlessly lift you into higher and higher levels of yourself.

The First Law: Nothing can stop you from starting over

The greatest power you possess for succeeding in life is your under-standing that life gives you a fresh start any moment you choose to start fresh. Nothing that stood in your way even a heartbeat before stands there now in the same way. It’s all new, even if you can’t as yet see it that way. You’ve only to test

the truth of this fact about the new-ness of life to discover the incred-ible freedom that waits for you just behind it. And then nothing can stop you. You’ll know the real se-cret and the perfect power of start-ing over.

The Second Law: Don’t be afraid to see when something doesn’t work

Learn to be sensitive and listen to the inner signals that try and tell you when something isn’t working. You know what they are. Frustrationand resentment to name just a few. The presence of these emotional troubles isn’t trying to tell you that you can’t succeed, only that the road you’ve insisted upon taking so far doesn’t lead to where you want. Learning to admit when something isn’t working is the same as teach-ing yourself what will.

The Third Law: If it doesn’t flow, there’s more to know

Learn to recognize all forms of strain, whether at work, in your

creative efforts, or in your relation-ships, as being unnecessary. The friction you feel mounting when busy at some labor is never caused by the task at hand, but by what you don’t yet know about it. This means the only real reason for your strain is that you’ve got hold of a wrong idea you don’t yet see as wrong. This new insight allows you to release yourself by showing you what you need to know. Flowingfollows your new knowing.

The Fourth Law: Don’t take the easy way

There’s no getting away from what you don’t know, which is why any time you feel compelled to go around a problem by taking the easy way, that problem always comes round again. And isn’t that what makes life seem so hard? Learn to see the easy way as a lying thought that keeps you tied up and doing hardtime.Gettingsomethingoveris not the same as having it com-pleted. And as this insight grows, so will your understanding that the

ITY

whole idea of the hard way has al-ways been just a lying thought as well. Now you know: the complete way is the easy way. So volunteer to make the hard way your way and learn the real easy way.

The Fifth Law: On the other side of the resistance is the flow

There are often times when it feels as though you can’t go any farther in your work or studies. But you can learn to go beyond any block-age. Make the following clear to yourself. Those moments when it feels as though you’re least able to get beyond yourself are not telling you that you’ve gone as far as you can go, but only reveal that you’ve reached as far as you know for now. This higher self-knowledge about your true inner position allows you to see the resistance you’re feeling for what it really is: a threshold, and not a closed door. Walk through it. Nothing can stop you. On the other side of the resistance is the flow. Learning to go beyond you is the same as entering into the new.

The Sixth Law: Watch for opportu-nity to learn something new

Everything is changing all the time. That means life is an endless occa-sion for learning something new. But this means more than meets the eye. Just as you’re a part of everything, everything is a part of you. The whole of life is con-nected. And your ability to learn is part of the wonder of this com-plete, but ever-changing, whole. Learning serves as a window, not only into the complex world you see around you, but also through it you may also look into the “you” that’s busy looking into the world. And when you’ve learned there’s

no end to what you can see about the amazing worlds spinning both around and within you, you’ll also know there’s no end to you. So stay awake. Learn something new every day. You’ll love how that makes you feel about yourself.

The Seventh Law: Learn to see conclusions as limitations

If you approach the possibilities of learning about your life as being limitless, which they are, then it fol-lows that any conclusion you reach about yourself has to be an unseen limitation. Why? Because there’s alwaysmore to see. For instance, let yourself see that all conclusions are illu-sions when it comes to the se-curity they promise. There may be security in a prison, but there are also no choices behind its confin-ing walls. Learn to see all con-clusions about yourself as invisible cells.Forthat’swhattheyare.Theseeming security these conclusions offer are a poor substitute for the real security of knowing that who your really are is always free to be something higher.

The Eighth Law: Have no fear about being afraid

Fear can’t learnwhich iswhy youmust learn about fear if you ever

wish to be a fearless learner. The first thing to learn is how to get past your fear of being afraid. Here’s how. The next time fear fills a mo-ment, see the difference between the fact of your situation and your feelings about it. This it the right use of your mind.

Forinstance,it’safactinterestrateschange. It’s not a fact you have to be afraid when they do. That fear is not a fact of life, but only becomes one as long as you insist that life perform according to what you think are your best interests. As you learn to see these fearful feel-ings don’t belong to you, but only to your wrong thinking, you cease to be afraid.

The Ninth Law: Never accept defeat

As long as it’s possible to learn, you need never feel tied down by any past defeat in your life. Here’s the real fact: nothing can prevent the inwardly self-educating man or woman from succeeding in life. And here’s why: wisdom always tri-umphs over adversity. But to win, real wisdom calls you to join in a

special kind of struggle. And if this battle had a banner under which to rally, here’s what would be written upon that higher call to arm: “But I can find out!” Yes, you can learn the facts. You may not understand how you could have been blind to that evil person’s real intentions, but you can find out. Take these four words that are freedoms bat-tle cry. Use them to defeat what’s defeating you.

The Tenth Law: Learn to let go of painful pretense

Most people approach their trou-bles with one of these two non-solutions: they either pretend their problem isn’t a problem, or they pretend they’ve solved their trou-bles with temporary cover-ups. But their pain remains. It doesn’t have to be this way for you. You can learn to let go of painful pretense. Here’s how. When facing an old problem, what you don’t want is another “new way” to deal with it. What you really want is to learn some-thing new about the true nature of what has a hold on you. To go far, start near. When faced with any pain, let go of what you think you know. Act towards your trouble as if you don’t know anything about it. This new solution is the only true one because the truth is you don’t know what the real problem is. Otherwise you wouldn’t still have it. Letting go of what you think you know puts you in the right place for learning what you need to know.

The Eleventh Law: Persistence always prevails

If you’ll persist with your sincere

wish for higher learning, you can’t help but succeed. Persistence al-ways prevails because part of its power is to hold you in place un-til either the world lines up with your wish, or you see that your wish is out of line. But, for which-ever way it turns in that moment, you’ve won something that only persistence can pay. See the fol-lowing: if you get what you think you have to have to be happy and you’re still not satisfied, then you’ve learned what you don’t want. Now you can go on to higher things. And should you learn you’ve been wearing yourself out with useless wishes, then this discovery allows you to turn your energies in a new direction: self liberation.

Relaxing into WholenessBy Susan McNeal Velasquez

Imagine we could be reborn and this time we would show up fully formed with all the learnings from our life experiences and none of the unfinished business and unclaimed heart hurts we’ve suffered

while growing up.

Imagine further that as a result, we would find our-selves connected and solidly grounded in our core, per-sonal power. We would fully own and have command of our talents, would clearly know our preferences, and be able to access our inner wisdom and intuitive guid-ance as we choose what we say “yes” to and what re-quires a “no.”

We would be genuine, authentic, all of one fabric and fully ready, willing, and able to confidently access our storehouse of knowledge, wisdom, and creative ener-gy that would generate our full, rich participation in the creation of our lives.

We would be visible and vulnerable, unarmored and curious, open and receptive rather than defensive, hy-per-vigilant, and self-critical. We would be able to con-nect with others in the spirit of communion, creating understanding by seeking out ways in which we are similar, and allowing our differences to be put on the back burner.

We would also be able to interact with people who hold a different set of values and realities and be willing to use those differences to expand our knowledge base. We would have no need to feel threatened by differ-

ences or driven to invalidate and make another wrong because they disagree with our point of view. We would have enough inner solidity to agree to disagree.

We wouldn’t be threatened, jealous, envious, or resent-ful of anyone. We would be aware we are walking on our own life path and are happy and fulfilled because we are clear we are not in competition with anyone.

I ask you to entertain this imagining because it is im-possible to unleash the power of our intuition until we established a core connection with our essence.

Underneath who we pretend to be sits a layer of thoughts, feelings, misconceptions, abandonments, embarrassments, shame, rage, anger, guilt, and resent-ments I categorize under the title “Who We are Afraid We Are.”

Imagine a circle with three inner bands. The outer layer is who we pretend to be formed by our attempts to appear better than we feel by bolstering ourselves up with a false, idealized, manufactured self-image.

Sitting underneath that layer sits who we are afraid we are, the inner core circle that houses who we are, our essence qualities.

Life is about growth and progression. We are born. Our physical bodies grow. We sustain physical injuries, some slight and some significant. We grow mentally. We sus-tain injuries through misconceptions, lack of stimula-tion, and habits of negativity, or laziness of thought, some slight and some significant.

We grow emotionally. We mature to express and re-lease stored up emotional energy and integrate pain-ful experiences that gives us the capacity to empathize and show compassion to ourselves and others by un-derstanding of our emotions. When we block and aban-don painful emotions, they don’t mature. We remain emotionally injured, some slight and some significant.

These orphaned emotions remain out of sight, but not out of mind. They color our self-perceptions and our relationships with a dull coat of low to high-level emo-tional repression that keeps us stuck in the muck and mire of anxiety and fear.

When we are willing to let go of the pretense of being better than or less than, we can courageously facing our fears. As we learn to welcome our rejected emo-tions home so that the heart wounds of our past can finally begin to heal, we will be rewarded with a grow-ing connection to the essence of who we are.

We will experience our fears and apprehensions matur-ing into a healthy connection with that inner core solid-ity that gives rise to genuine, creative self-expression and peace of mind.

Before we can fully access our intuitive knowing, we first must awaken to the information available through our five senses.

When our senses are dulled by rigid opinions, old grudg-es, worn out habits, and stagnant, lifeless ways of see-ing, we overburden our nervous systems with static. Nothing emanates from deadened circuits.

To activate our intuitive vision, we must learn to see our world with new eyes and hear past the mundane into the heart of issues. We must be willing to taste life fully and be touched by our experiences.

I can hear you now: “Isn’t there the no-cost, no frills, basic icing on the cake, all benefits and no prices plan? Can’t I get intuitive powers and secret, special informa-tion that I can add to everything else I already know, so I can be safe, right and perfect?”

In a word, no. Intuition synthesizes all the information gleaned from our five senses. If our basic instincts are shut down, rigidly calcified and numb, then we have no open channel to access our intuitive knowing. We are stuck with poor reception.

ItislikehavingthecabledisconnectedonyourTV.Theinformation is there, but you’ve lost access to it. So, what to do?

Step 1: Approach the issues in your life in a new way.

Rather than over-thinking, over-analyzing, and over-dramatizing your life challenges, ask, instead: “How many ways can I view this situation to be open to new information?”

Step 2: Check your attitude. Can you give yourself per-mission to trust yourself to do what is life-giving and enhancing rather than looking outside yourself for an-swers?

Step 3: Allow yourself to elevate not knowing to a sa-cred place until you can see with a clearer vision and take the actions that spring from your inner storehouse of untapped wisdom and guidance.

Step 4: Mentally and emotionally let go of approach-ing your life as a problem to be solved. Shift your vision to seeing your life as a reality to be experienced for a while and be patient. Still your mind. Open your heart to allow your intuition to be activated.

Step 5: Allow a full partnership with your Higher Self to begin to emerge. This is where trust comes into play. Trust that clarity and direction will come to you in its own time and in exactly the correct way.

Don’t take my word for it. Simply try the exercise for yourself. Intuitive knowledge comes as a result of tak-ing your life more seriously. Not the serious that means consistent, predictable, rigid, cold, numb, and hard. I mean the serious that is willing to make the necessary adjustments to actualize new visions. The serious that is willing to let go of outmoded ways of being to mus-ter up the courage to stand up, fully participate, and respond to life with all systems on go.

Decide to resurrect the serious that allows you to be-gin to take the steps necessary to activate true joy and pleasure as you master the art of living fully engaged.

7 Steps to Healing the Broken Heart of an AddictNo Matter What Your AddictionBy Esther Nicholson

We each have experienced deep disappointments. Some people use

them as excuses to keep themselves down, hanging onto the belief that things never work out. Many hold onto their stories of abandonment, rejection, betrayal, and abuse, blaming others for their pain. Some people unconsciously use these stories to stay small, constricted, and determined to never trust or open their hearts again.

While this is acceptable and even encouraged in the beginning stag-es of shock and disappointment, it is toxic, counter-productive and a spiritual dead end to park there, especially for those with addictive/dependent tendencies.

It never serves us to do a bypass and pretend we’re so spiritual that we don’t experience resent-

ment, fear, and hurt. It’s healthy and absolutely necessary to be in the moment and acknowledge ev-ery feeling that arises when you’ve experienced disappointment and loss, no matter how it occurred or who’s at fault. Allowing yourself to feel the pain, rage, fear, and sor-row, is, in fact, a very important part of your healing journey. If you skip this important step, true heal-ing is impossible. However, it’s just as important to work through the pain and heal any unforgiveness or resentment operating in your awareness.

It has been proven over and over again, that resentment - which is the remembering, reliving and re-telling of painful events - is deadly for those with addictive or depen-dent tendencies. You simply cannot afford it. Resentment and blame blocks you from a connection with Spirit, your spirit. When you are

blocked from your spirit, you are blocked from emotional balance and well-being.

In this state, life becomes very hard and every moment is like trying to operate through a foggy mind of scatteredness, anger, and pain. And from that place, you will act on your addictions and dependencies again because they are the only things that seem to give you the il-lusion of temporary relief.

The Sufi poet Rumi reminds us that the way through the pain is to feel the pain. However, I have found that even in the midst of that pain, you can catch a glimmer of the fact that healing is possible, and that a blessing is right in the midst of your deepest despair. Just this aware-ness shows that you have made the first step in climbing your way out of what felt like your longest and darkest night.

How do I know this? Been there - done that - and so grateful that the Universe has never failed me. Even in your darkest hour, it will not fail you if you’re willing to go to what-ever lengths to find the “value in the valley, the message in the mess, and the testimony in the test.”

Following are the steps I practicedaily, especially when I’m experi-encing the fire of divine refinement.

1. Feel the pain

Allow yourself to feel angry, resentful, fearful and hurt. Yell, scream and cry if that’s what’s coming through. It’s your inner child needing a voice for his/her frustration and disappoint-ment. If you don’t give children an opportunity to express their feelings - they find another way to act out, right? Your in-ner child will find a way to act out, as well, if not given a loving space to feel its feelings.

2. Tell your story

Talk to people on a spiritual path who can be compassion-ate with your pain, but have the ability to take you past the story to your healing. No more Starbucks dates with your best friend to talk about what others

did to you over, and over, and over again.

3. Forgive, forgive, and forgive

If you have to do a forgiveness process 50 times a day, do it. It doesn’t condone inappropriate behavior on the part of others; it heals your core wounds, al-lows you to release others from blame and transforms your sto-ry from victim to victory. For-giveness sets you free.

4. Make amends to the best of your ability for any part you’ve played in the situation.

Yes, you can stop screaming - I know, I know. This is one of the most challenging steps there is, but it will take you where you want to go, my friend.

5. Meditate

Sit in the silence, not to get your problems solved, but from a realization that in the mind of God,therearenoproblemsandthat the good you are seeking is already complete. Meditation isn’t about making anything happen; it’s about coming into alignment with the good that is already happening.

6. Pray

Get clear about thereality and nature of God,andpray fromthat recognition of your oneness with God.Affirmingyourfreedom, peace of mind, divine, per-fect order, harmony and inexhaustible love. Speak the word of truth for yourself, and have

others support you in this way as well.

7. Surround yourself with love and support from family and friends.

Exercise, eat healthy (Krispy Creams might not be the best thing for you right now, so treat yourself in a healthy way), and have as much fun as possible.

Soon you’ll be on the other side, and the door that was shut will be replaced with something better than you have ever imagined.

If we enter the quiet mind, we enter a borderland between waking consciousness and dream consciousness. It is the zone of Lucid Meditation. In this margin, we have right of entry to many things:

worries and fears, suppressed emotions, all of which can now rise to the surface to be relieved or made productive. Our dearest aspirations and longings may come up.

Our minds carry a magical power that we can mobi-lize when we become lucid. It is rewarding to develop this capacity, and to visualize what we dearly want to achieve. Though it may sound mysterious, it is not. Achieving what we visualize is fully possible if we make this way-- the way of lucid meditation-- a way of life and practice.

Lucid dreaming is a special kind of dreaming; the dreamer is awake and yet dreaming. He/she can di-rect the dream. At such a time, waking consciousness meets dream consciousness. When the waking mind and sleeping mind join, we have special access to high expanses of the mind.

Opening to the Supermindthrough Lucid Dreaming and Lucid MeditationBy Dr. Maurie D. Pressman

In the lucid dream, we bring waking consciousness into the dream world; in lucid meditation, we bring the dream consciousness into the waking world. In both cases, there is a joining. It is this joined consciousness that we cultivate in lucid dreaming and lucid medita-tion. But all this is of little benefit if we do not bring the lessons learned from such dreams and meditation into waking life.

Lucid meditation helps us to achieve a cool, detached mind with which we can survey our emotions, make im-portant observations about ourselves and others, and better decisions.

We become more able to control passion and operate with wisdom. Practicing introspection, and keeping open to inner subtle cues, we contact the higher subtle realms. We broaden inner vision; we surrender, all the while looking inside with a surrendered expectation. We become progressively open to the higher realms and to messages that come from a higher place.

Forinstance, whilewatchingawildlifeprogram,Iwasdrawn in to the inner state of a puma hunting its prey. I felt the puma’s hunger, its graceful and powerful burst of speed, and its satisfaction as it filled an empty stom-ach. This experience let me know that when we iden-tify with either person or animal, we do so by entering the other on the subtle plane. “Avesa” is the Sanskrit term for moving into the subtle body of another entity. Our ability to experience avesa is the basis of sympathy, empathy, and identification with another. When we are disturbed by another person’s problems, feeling their pain or their fear, we are uniting astral bodies on the subtle plane, creating avesa, and identification.

Lucid meditation is the mirror of lucid dreaming. In lu-cid dreaming, our goal is to be awake in the dream. In lucid meditation, we are already awake, yet we try to connect with the power of the dream realm. Translated into waking life, this ability, cultivated during medita-tion, develops the power of our subtle senses. This ca-pacity affirms our essential unity with all of life. It culti-vates compassion, awareness, and a sense of our being in the flow of things. Using examples from meditations, I will share my experiences with lucid med-itation, to show how it has helped me to be a better teacher, therapist, father, hus-band, and friend, and improved my sensi-tivity and compassion.

The Superworld and the Dream

The Supermind dwells in the Superworld. The Superworld extends across the uni-verses; in it we are everywhere in a mo-ment. It is the world of thought and at the same time a world beyond thought, reach-ing ever higher into a sphere of undiscov-ered power.

A world of consciousness, it embraces all things, for all things have consciousness. It is ever present, yet hidden by the veil of cynicism and doubt. The Superworld can be reached through the silent mind, but at the same time, by elevation of the self, the personality, into that spiritual High Essence called Self. This is achieved by raising our thoughts and aspiration to high realms of beauty, love, and service.

We experience the Superworld in our dreams, in which movement is easy, where all things are possible and re-ality is ever created anew. In our astral bodies, we visit

theinfiniterealmsofthedream.Finally,wevisitthedo-main of All Love.

Dreams have an important relationship to the Super-world. The Supermind can be entered in a dream. There, we can understand more deeply. Our dreams help us to evaluate progress or lack of progress in our evolution, and through them, we can prognosticate and help to find our future path.

However, in order to see into the future and into the way things are in the higher realm, we must drop the shackles of doubt and the inhibition we have been taught. It is absolutely necessary to take the visions we see literally. In this way, we get a feel of the power that resides within, as we inhabit the Superworld: the facility to move, create, understand and change. I have always relied on dreams to understand my patients more deeply. Now I can use them to see into the higher world, which they and we can, and do, inhabit.

Dreams are thought journeys into the future. When we take our dreams seriously, even literally, we can use them to move upward, and create.

As I sat down to write this article on April 15, 2013, news came that my hometown of Boston

suffered a lethal terrorist attack. We could say this runs counter to the theme of this article; that is, that consciousness is evolving. The Boston attack was clearly not an evolved act. If anything, this demonstrates the complexity of the subject, because evolving consciousness is a process and is not uniform.

Consciousness at a basic level in-volves two things: awareness and the ability to process and use in-formation. Awareness has several levels. Animals are aware of their environment, but they lack self-awareness in the sense of being able to think about themselves in relation to their place in the larger universe. They act rather than re-flect. But even the reflective human mind is fragmented. We have sub-conscious and unconscious levels of the mind as well as a polarized perceptual mechanism called the left and right brain.

Gathering the Seeds: The Evolution of ConsciousnessBy Peter Canova

Why all the compartmentalization? Very simple. If our consciousnesswas a single unity, we would be God,oratleastwewouldperceiveat a godlike level, and we would not at all perceive ourselves to be the individuals we think we are.

God,orConsciousnesswithacapi-tal C, broke Itself up so It could be-come us.

Creation was not a singular act by thewave of God’s hand. It was aflinging of God’s arm spreadingseeds of the One Consciousness throughout creation.

These seeds would grow in differ-ent levels of awareness depending upon how far they landed from the source of the nourishing light that had born them, and this physical di-mension is said to be the farthest of all. But like every seed sown, a time comes to gather and reap the har-vest. This ingathering of the con-scious seeds back to the source is what we call spiritual evolution.

A polarity runs throughout the uni-verse. It is a form of energy you might be familiar with as yin and

yang, or female and male. This po-larity is reflected in humans as the left and right brain hemispheres. The left brain is the domain of the male force: logic, intellect, analytic thought, science, and math. As the source of intuition, feeling, holistic thought, art, and abstract creativ-ity, the right brain is more feminine-ly-oriented.

Ancient spiritual texts identify the yin, or female force, the feminine face of God, if you will, as thatwhich led the fall or dispersal of consciousness into creation. When consciousness first fell into mate-rial form, this feminine force would have dominated the minds of our early ancestors. History does tell us that most societies prior to 3,000 BC were feminine-oriented and worshiped some form of the god-dess in their mysteries. The world would have seemed magical to the early humans as they intuited their way through life in pulsations with the rhythms of nature.

But now consciousness found itself embodied in physical form subject

to all the laws and perils of physi-cal existence. Wild beasts preyed on our ancestors. They needed to gather food and seek shelter. They had to organize and analyze in an effort to understand and control their environment.

The left brain, or male way of think-ing, eventually came to dominate the human thought process so suc-cessfully that today we are practi-cally destroying ourselves for the sake of dominance and power as we find ourselves living in the ves-tiges of modern patriarchal societ-ies today.

However, I believe we are on the verge of a shift, because I believe consciousness is an evolutionary spiral. I believe the feminine, in-tuitive energy is recycling into our lives to balance the dominant male-oriented thought forms that have set the tenor for modern societies. The attack in Boston exemplifies exactly what we must evolve away from. Such aggression is the age old impulse to dominate and con-trol through fear.

If the original information of cre-ation is a unity, then evolution in consciousness means personally intuiting that unity. When one per-son harms another, it ultimately comes from ignorance of that fact. It is the current resurgence of the intuitive feminine energy that takes our minds off the material world of separation and opens them to the spiritual.

Greatadvancesnearlyalwaysbeginamong smaller numbers on the pe-riphery of a society. They work their way inward slowly, just as forging a new nation in the old West hap-pened on the frontier, while it took time for the events to be absorbed in the settled areas back East.

This growing consciousness fueled by the feminine energy is in full swing among the group that has come to be known as the Cultural Creatives. These are people from all walks of life “whose values em-brace a curiosity and concern for the world, an openness to self-ac-tualization through spirituality, psy-chotherapy, and holistic practices.”

I’ve been attending holistic confer-ences for five decades now. Until perhaps ten years ago, if I was in a lecture with 200 present, there would have been 199 women and me.Guysjustdidn’tattendwayout,touchy-feely events. Now I speak at large forums with thousands attending, and the audiences are almost equally divided. Something radical clicked within the minds of these men, because the feminine flavored content of these gather-ings has not changed much.

The number of people identifying themselves as religious is declin-ing, while those who identify them-selves as spiritual is rising.

My book, Pope Annalisa, is a spiri-tual thriller I self-published because it was too unusual for mainstream publishing.

However, in 2012, out of nowhere, actors and producers in Hollywood got hold of it, loved the content, and I signed a movie deal. A new consciousness has made Holly-wood ready for the book.

The gateway to higher conscious-ness is balancing our male/female energies to make intuition and intellect work in harmony. A tip-ping point will occur when enough people awaken by personal experi-ence to the true nature of our real-ity. We are the seeds of conscious-ness. One day, all those seeds will be gathered into the one basket from which we came. Then, as one great figure said, we shall be near the Kingdom of Heaven.

All of us have thousands of thoughts every day. Observe these thoughts and you will see that most of them are judgments of yourself, a situation, or others. The problem is that if

you believe they are true, each one arouses a stressful sensation or emotion in you.

For example, the thought, “My partner doesn’t loveme,” may instantly make you angry or sad. If you think, “I won’t have enough money for my old age,” immedi-ately your brain tells your body you are unsafe. Becom-ing the prisoner of your beliefs about yourself, others, or the situation is the source of all emotional suffering.

The hardest beliefs of all to free ourselves from are those that we have internalized as children. Maybe you interpreted your parent’s behaviors to mean that you weren’t lovable, or that you were too much, or not enough. For the restofyour life, subconsciously, youwill anticipate that if you are truly authentic, you will be rejected.

As a child we learned to protect ourselves from the fear of abandonment or judgment by becoming a pleaser, withdrawing into ourselves, or rebelling. These child-hood defense mechanisms protected us then, but if we still employ them as adults they cut us off from intima-cy in our lives. They doom us to the very suffering they were originally meant to prevent.

The reason we become emotionally stuck is that when-

Stop Being a Prisoner of Your BeliefsBy Richard Moss, M.D.

ever we feel threatening feelings such as loneliness or powerlessness, rather than facing them consciously, we flee them as we did as children.

Where, specifically, do we go?

Into thinking! It is the stories we tell ourselves as we flee our fears which generate stressful emotions such as anger or self-pity. These emotions, as miserable as they are, are easier for most people to be with than the deeper fears.

Habitually running from threatening feelings into reac-tive thinking generates a self-limiting emotional cycle that is a form of addiction as powerful as that which is caused by any drug. Indeed, mind-made suffering is what causes people to turn to alcohol and drugs in the first place.

The good news is that we have a profound power in us that we can use to set ourselves free; it is the power of present-moment awareness which allows us to rec-ognize our beliefs instead of identifying with them. It gives us the ability to feel our feelings, but not react to them as before.

The first step to using the power of awareness is expe-riencing what it feels like to be in your body in the pres-ent moment free from the troubling emotions aroused by your thoughts. This is a highly alive state. Athletes, poets, dancers, know this as the state of flow. We have all touched the fullness of flow, perhaps in love-making, or swooping down a ski slope. It is the state that arises in meditation when instead of holding onto thoughts or being captured by feelings, you let them pass though like clouds in the sky.

In all contemplative and spiritual traditions, the basic practice is to directly experience the contrast between how you feel when you are captured by your thinking and how you feel when you are simply present.

Forexample, rightnowtakefiveslowbreaths.Asyouinhale focus precisely on the sensation of the air flow-ing through your nostrils and imagine that every cell in your body is filling with new aliveness. Then, as you exhale, imagine your whole being expanding outward asifyourbodywereaslargeastheuniverse–alimit-less vastness. Immediately, thinking will momentarily recede and you become a little calmer.

Repeating these five conscious breaths 50 times a day takes only a few minutes, but over time this simple prac-tice can transform your life. You will have the choice whether to be captured by your thinking and collapse into the emotions those thoughts arouse in you or in-stead let yourself begin anew in that moment. You stop being the victim of what you are telling yourself and learn to flow with life.

The most important moment in your life is right Now. Don’t stay in the habit of believing your thoughts. Use the power of your awareness to step back from nega-tive thoughts, inhabit your body, and rest into the pres-ent moment. With consistent practice you can recog-nize the instant your thinking leads you out of the Now because emotional turmoil instantly starts.

Enduring change does not happen without deep work. Through this work, I have seen men and women be-come willing to be vulnerable instead of disguising their fears, thereby gaining the respect and trust of their spouses, friends, and co-workers. I have seen mar-riages healed and stalled careers flourish. Women who have never felt safe to express themselves fully, end abusive relationships and build dynamic lives. You stop

We each have faced setbacks, challenges, and failures while

pursuing our dreams. We think we’re on the right path, but then an obstacle appears and we wonder if it’s worth the blood, sweat, and tears. We may reach a tipping point and have to decide, “Do I quit or continue my pursuit of my dream?” I recently faced this decision.

My dream is to become a success-ful, published author.

In 2005, a voice challenged me to write a book about four women I heard speak at the Women’s Conference hosted by First LadyMaria Shriver. The women were Trisha Meili (the Central Park Jog-ger), Marilyn van Derbur (1959 Miss America who was a victim of incest), Erin Runnion (whose 6-year-old daughter was kidnapped and murdered), and Mariane Pearl (whose husband, Danny, was be-headed by al-Qaeda terrorists).

For the next five years I inter-viewed women globally who, like these courageous women, rose from horrific circumstances to help others. I was in awe (and jealous) of the women. They had something I

didn’t think I had - courage! I won-dered how they could be so brave as I wallowed in self-pity because I was an abused child.

Little did I know then I would trans-form from self-hatred to becoming an altruistic kidney donor. It was a spiritual journey that could be mea-sured in inches…16 to be exact…from my head to my heart.

I continually wondered if I had the skills to adequately tell their stories.

I had prayed for a great publisher; however, after eight years of hav-ing my book rejected, I was tired and felt beat. This past spring I real-ized I was the one I was waiting for!

The day before I was to upload my book on Create Space (Amazon’s publishing house), I attended a More Power to Publish seminar hosted by Bob Bare. I learned about the changes in the world of book publishing, how self-publishing was gaining more acceptance, and how even successful authors previously represented by large New York publishers were self-publishing to reap bigger residuals.

I also learned there is another choice besides traditional publish-ing and self-publishing. I learned about a publishing house that of-

fers marketing, speaking, and coaching services to help you self-publish your book more cost-ef-fectively, efficiently, and with less stress.

So, “Am I going to give up?” The short answer is “No!”

I’m now working with Bob and Lee Pound, a book coach and received great feedback on how to make my book more publishable. My hope is to self-publish From Ash to Flame: 27 Women Who Saved My Life be-fore the end of this year.

Speaking to those who are at a tip-ping point of whether to continue your dream, I say, “If you really want your dream to happen deep in your soul, even if their are ob-stacles and people tell you you’re crazy, “Don’t give up. Allow the Universe to bring the people, re-sources, and opportunities to you!”

Solomon Speaks on Reconnecting Your LifeBy Dr. Eric Pearl and Frederick Ponzlov

Dr. Eric Pearl, founder of Reconnective Healing had a successful chiropractic practice

in Los Angeles when a series of bizarre occurrences led him to realize that his gift lay far beyond the realm of spinal adjustment. One patient after another reported healings from cancers, epilepsy, cerebral palsy and other severe health conditions, simply when Dr. Pearl held his hands near them. This coincided with an astonishing series of occurrences whenpatientFrederickPonzlovandothers began delivering coherent messages about the healings that were occurring, seemingly coming from a source beyond our four-dimensional existence here on Earth. But there was much more...profound and life-altering information, illumination and wisdom on how we can improve our lives.

Those insights came courtesy of Solomon, an extra-dimensional

intelligence that speaks through Frederick. Later, under specificquestioning from Dr. Pearl, the vi-tal content in the new book, Solo-mon Speaks on Reconnecting Your Life, came to light. This book of-fers a new perspective on how to reconnect with, tap into, create, utilize, monitor, manage, and flow forward with the unlimited, expan-sive power of the Universal energy that enables us to heal, thrive and live our most vital, purposeful, pro-ductive, balanced and exuberantly happy life.

The following excerpt from the book is a glimpse into the store-house of knowledge that Solomon offers.

There is No Progress to be Made by

Celebrating Our Differences

This penchant for human beings to discover how unalike they are, how distinct they are, it all has to do with ego. We have now managed to cre-ate how different we all are. And in

that difference comes disharmony.

Where we need to put the energy now is in how similar we are, how much we all have that is similar that can be shared. How alike we all are, in terms of joy and pain and suffer-ing and elation. And we need to share that information now.

There is no progress to be made by celebrating our differences. We’ve done that.

We are now in a state of critical mass. We are so isolated, with our various distinct individualities, that we can wreak havoc on someone else and hope or think that we gain from it. I’m talking about terrorism; I’m talking about hate crimes…anything of that ilk. That somehow if we are able to eliminate a reflec-tion of ourselves, we are going to become more whole. It’s a very twisted viewpoint.

So that’s what we need to recog-nize, that we are all, in an umbili-cal sense, connected to the same

ITY

force. Like reconnecting strings. Because we’ve lost that connec-tion, that understanding that each individual’s greatness is relied upon by the other person’s greatness, by recognizing their greatness, not their inability. What this simply comes down to is to recognize that every creature has greatness inher-ent in them. And the suffering of one is the suffering of all mankind.

There is a way for everyone to be joyful and not to be dependent upon what I refer to as relative hap-piness. That happiness has to do with whether or not you have more or less than another individual in terms of material goods, attractive-ness, or all those strata that have been created. It’s a very destruc-tive energy, relative happiness. The absolute happiness that comes from within, that’s eternal. It isn’t at the expense of everyone else. When people allow themselves to re-experience that, they recognize the joy that’s in all.

In many people’s illusion, prosper-ity is what’s going to allow them to finance happiness somewhere. That’s what prosperity means to them. “Now I can be happy, be-cause now I can buy the house that’s going to bring me happi-ness.” I know many lonely people with very big houses.

Let’s instead talk about experienc-ing joy. We were put on this planet to experience joy. To understand the beauty, the depth, the excite-ment of the life experience. To thoroughly embody it, to become joyful in it, and by doing so, become compassionate with other people. Bottom line.

The trouble is we’re looking in the wrong places for what we think is joy, and we’ve bought into other

concepts in which we think joy is experienced. Or we distrust the joy we’re experiencing as not being valid and not being of social worth. So the bottom line here is: joy is something that exists, can happen within you, and can be a part of the light in every second of your being if you choose to live that way. And when you experience it, everything else will be taken care of. You do not have to worry.

You must allow yourself to trust your life force and not second-guess it. Trust your instinct. It is a sum total of your entire existence. It is a vast library of information. We blind ourselves to it when we shut down our access to our library. It’s incorporating all of that exis-tence, all that work, into this single moment in time. And breathing through it and allowing that funnel through to create the kind of force that will alter existence... that will change lives.

Encountering Gurdjieff By John Anthony West

My first (alas! posthumous) encounter with the remarkableMr.Gurdjieff tookplace on the Balearic Island of Ibiza in the early 1960’s. A casual artist friend,

responding to my newfound enthusiasm for astrology, gave me Rodney Collin’s Theory of Celestial Influence to read. Despite certain misgivings about the incessant harping about schools I was eager to hear more, and my shrewd and tactful friend thereafter carefully spoon-fed me selected titles --Ouspensky, Nicoll, Bennett, Kenneth Walker-- until he deemed me ready for the man himself.

Foramoment,itwastouchandgo.

Reading, in the first few introductory sentences to Beelzebub, that I was about to be obliged to disavow everything I had ever thought, believed, admired, val-ued and even wrote, I was about to hurl this arrogant book against the wall ... when I realized that this was preciselyGurdjieff’sintention.Knowing, asanalreadysubstantially published writer, how difficult it is to elicit a specific, intended response from readers in twenty pages of prose, or 200 pages for that matter, I was caught up in admiration for a man who could get me that angry in just two sentences.

With a big inner smile, and nod of admiration, I read on ...and on ... and on...

Via my extensive prior reading I was already predis-posed to the cosmology, philosophy, psychology, the scrambled and revised history and much of the rest. I was unprepared for the sweep of his humor, and the carefully convoluted style that obliged my brain to sweat in entirely new ways.

But what attracted me most was that Gurdjieff wasthe first human being I had ever encountered (albeit posthumously) as utterly contemptuous of Western Civilization as I was. What I called The Lunatic Asylum hecalledThePainFactory.Weweretalkingthesamelanguage. The big difference, the huge difference be-tween us, from my thirty-year-old point of view, (apart from his obvious comprehensive knowledge and un-derstanding) was that he knew how to live successfully within the asylum, and I did not. And it was this I had to learn -- or else!

Even so, it took a few more years of inner wrestling to get convinced that this knowledge could not be ac-quired on my own (I was accustomed to doing things on my own, hated groups, refused to ask for help from anyone, even when I needed help). And so I left my sunny, but now tourist-and-hippie infested island and offIwenttoLondontojointheFoundation, thenunderthe leadership of Mme. Lannes.

Voracious reading and research along with intensiveinner work now prepared me for the symbolist inter-pretation of ancient Egypt developed by R.A. Schwaller de Lubicz in his massive, three volume work Le Temple de’l’Homme(TheTempleofMan)thenonlyinFrench. This set the stage for the next thirty years of writing.

IwasalreadyconvincedthatGurdjieffhadsomewhereaccessed otherwise hidden sources of an almost for-gotten doctrine, and presented it --on a take it or leave

it basis--in a form compatible to contemporary under-standing. Schwaller proved in magisterial fashion that it had once existed in coherent and recoverable form in ancient Egypt (and by extension, in other ancient, but presently vitiated or degenerate doctrines as well).

Initially, I thought there had to be some formal con-nectionbetweenGurdjieffandSchwaller. Bothwereliving in France around the same time; Gurdjieff, ofcourse, was well known, indeed notorious, in the Paris ofthe20’s.IthoughtthatGurdjieffhadperhapsgivenSchwaller the task of actually documenting the great doctrine. But, no; working closely with Schwaller’s step-daughter, Lucie Lamy, convinced me that there was no formal connection. Schwaller had come to his almost identical interpretation entirely on his own. My self-

imposed task now became making Schwaller’s difficult ficult, sometimes near-impenetrable work accessible to a wider audience.

But after seven years in the Foundation, itwas time, with no little regret, to leave it. The experience had been invaluable, but it now seemed to me that what was called The FoundationfortheStudyoftheHarmoniousDevelopmentofManwassome90%Founda-tion and just 10% Harmonious Development. The old Bohemian anarchist within me re-asserted himself. Even so, I left with no little regret.

I had learned what I had learned. It was not what I’d hoped to learn. I was not enlight-ened.IhadnotmetGod,thoughitseemedto me sometimes that some of His minions were guiding me in some way. I had not found a way to immunize myself against neg-ative emotions, or to stop doting on my suf-fering (hard to acknowledge that I or anyone else should engage in so fruitless an exercise, but so it was, and is...). I was still much too recognizable to people who knew me before -- I was supposed to be walking around rayed in light, an obvious beacon to attract others. It was nothing like that. The changes, unap-parent to others, but not so to me, were in-ternal, minuscule. An incredible amount of work had gone into them, yet there was little to show. On the other hand, however minus-cule, that difference was all the difference in the world. I was not even very ‘conscious’,

but I was in some sense difficult to define, responsible. It was no longer that easy to press my buttons --and when they did get pressed, it was my responsibility, not ‘theirs’.Forreasonsofbrevity,IparaphraseGurdjieff’steaching on “buttons”: “Whoever and whatever press-es your buttons is your master.” Simple as that! It didn’t matter if I was wrong or right, if my buttons are pressed I lose; I am a slave. I saw that if I could learn that lesson (not so easy!) I could function within the asylum!

Still, itwas time to leave the formal Foundation andcarry on as best as I could on my own. Now, thirty- eightyearslater(andbackinalessFoundation-orient-

ed group, it is still the work that sustains, informs, and makes it possible for me to not just cope but move on.

The lessons learned and other reflections will eventu-ally find their way into a book I’m currently working on, but one reflection seems worth passing on now.

WhileintheFoundation,oneofitsmostirritatingchar-acteristics was the incessant gossip within the school, and the internal friction between the various schools all claiming to be the inheritors of the true Work.

The Foundationiks disparaged the J.G. Bennett peo-ple, and vice-versa while the various offshoot groups in America, England, and Paris were all increasingly at odds with each other.

Thirty-eight years later, that situation has become worse, rather than better, as the offshoot groups themselves split into toothpicks and then into splinters.

To me, it seemed so unnecessary and I, like so many, wondered why it had to be like this. I had long since givenupasfutiletryingtopassjudgmentonGurdjieffhimself.IdidnotcareifhewasMan4,5,6or7(Gurd-jieff terminology for levels of inner development).

No one, it seemed to me, had a monopoly or lock on what this extraordinary man intended. My own under-standing of the hierarchical principle convinced me that the lower is in no position to pass judgment on the higher.

However, the more I read (and keep on reading) of the experiences of those who had close contact with him, the more I began to think that, just perhaps, the friction itself was a part of the grand plan. And it is this that I offer up for what it may be worth.

The doctrine and even more important, the practice, has been given out to the world. There can be no doubtthatGurdjieffhadgonetoalmostsuperhumanlengths to avoid personal gurufication or canonization by his followers. It’s hard to imagine this was anything but intentional.

So, it seems to me just possible, that along analogous lines, he took similar pains to ensure that no one per-son, no single group, could successfully turn The Work (it’s appropriately called, since it’s not exactly fun) into an orthodoxy, which by definition means stasis, or Death.G’s(alleged)famouslastwords,“I’veleftyouall in a fine pickle” perhaps refers to that or something like that.

We were on our own. And so we are today -- intention-al or not. The fractious, competing and contentious

groupsensure--untilorunlesssomeoneofGurdjieffianstature appears to pull it all together, (which may not be a good thing anyhow)-- that unorthodoxy will pre-vail.

Since, from long study and much experience, it still seems that The Work is, if not the only, then at least the most effective way to learn to live with some degree of confidence within the degenerate, chaotic but yet wildly proliferating forces of The Church of Progress (whose Jesuits are Science, Education and the Media). Our job is to get on with that Work as best we can.

I have my ideas as to what constitutes the real work and what is misguided, even perverted. But it seems tomethat(myfriend, fellowGurdjieffianandfinepoet,David Kherdian and I have discussed this at length) if the Terror of the Situation is more-or-less accurately perceived, and the personal intention is more-or-less pureandfocused, theWork, inthatspecialGurdjieffiansense, will produce real results, regardless. Not much else will.

Author, lecturer and guide, John

Anthony West delivered a seismic

shock to archaeology in the early

1990's when he and Boston Uni-

versity geologist Robert Schoch

revealed that the Great Sphinx of

Giza, Egypt, showed evidence of

rainfall erosion. Such erosion could

only mean that the Sphinx was carved during or before the rains

that marked the transition of northern Africa from the last Ice Age

to the present interglacial epoch, a transition that occurred in the

millennia from 10,000 to 5000 BC.
