2013 INDIVIDUAL MILESTONES

Team President Michael Bidwill ■ Since taking over as team President in 2007, the Cardinals have gone .500 or better in 5 of 7 sea-sons (just twice in previous 20 years).

General Manager Steve Keim ■ Took over as GM on January 8th and executed 193 roster moves in helping Cardinals match greatest one-year turnaround in franchise history (5-11 to 10-6) in a 16-game season (4-12 in ’97 to 9-7 in ’98).

Head Coach Bruce Arians ■ Led Arizona to 10 victories in his first season with the team. In franchise history, only Norm Barry (11, 1925) had more wins in his first season than Arians did in 2013.

WR Larry Fitzgerald ■ In Week 12 of the 2013 season vs. Indianapolis, reached 11,000 career receiving yards. At 30 years, 85 days old, he became the youngest player in NFL history to reach the career milestone.

■ With 10 TD receptions in ’13, became 1 of just 9 players in NFL history with at least 10 TDs in five different seasons.

QB Carson Palmer ■ Threw for a career-high 4,274 yards and became the 1st player in NFL history to throw for 4,000+ yards with three different teams.

WR Michael Floyd ■ Established career highs in receptions (65), receiving yards (1,041) and TD receptions (5) as he became the 12th different player in franchise history to record 1,000 receiving yards in a season.

RB Andre Ellington ■ Totaled 1,023 scrimmage yards (652 rushing, 371 receiving), becoming the fifth rookie in team history to surpass 1,000 yards from scrimmage in a season. His 5.53-yard rushing average led all NFL players with a minimum of 100 rushing attempts.

LB John Abraham ■ Selected to his fifth career Pro Bowl after leading the team with 11.5 sacks, which gave him 133.5 sacks for his career and moved him into ninth place on the NFL’s all-time sacks list.

DE Calais Campbell ■ Set a career mark with 9.0 sacks and became the first player in team history with 50+ tackles and 6.0 sacks in five different seasons.

CB Patrick Peterson ■ Named first-team All-Pro at CB and was voted to his third straight Pro Bowl, becoming the sev-enth player in NFL history to be chosen to three Pro Bowls prior to age 24.

CB Justin Bethel ■ Selected to his 1st Pro Bowl after recording 21 special teams tackles, two blocked FGAs and a fumble recovery on special teams.

S Tyrann Mathieu ■ Named NFL Defensive Rookie of the Month for October after he totaled 21 tackles, 2 TFL, a sack, an INT and five passes defensed.

LB Karlos Dansby ■ A second-team All-Pro selection, became just the fourth NFL player with at least 6.0 sacks, 4 INTs and 2 INT-return TDs in a season since sacks became official in 1982.

Page 10: 2013 IN REVIEW - National Football Leagueprod.static.cardinals.clubs.nfl.com/assets/docs/2014MediaGuide/2014MG... · all NFL players with a minimum of 100 rushing attempts. LB John

254 2014 ARIZONA CARDINALS MEDIA GUIDE

In the regular season opener and debut of new head coach Bruce Arians, the Cardinals were in prime position for a key road division win. Larry Fitzgerald’s second TD reception of the day from new QB Carson Palmer put AZ up 11 late in the 3rd. However, the Rams would come back to tie it and then secured the vic-tory on Greg Zuerlein’s 48-yard FG with 0:40 left. Palmer was sharp in his Cards debut throwing for 327 yards and 2 TDs. He was helped by his trio of talented WRs: Fitzgerald (8-80, 2TDs), Andre Roberts (8-97) and Michael Floyd (4-82).

It looked like the Rams would strike first when Sam Bradford hit TE Jared Cook with a long completion down the middle late in the 1st quarter; 8 yards from the end zone, rookie safety Tyrann Mathieu hustled to poke the ball out from behind and LB Karlos Dansby recovered for a touchback. From there the Cards moved 80 yards in 8 plays, the biggest of which was a 1-handed catch by Floyd that covered 44 yards. That set-up a 1-yard Palmer to Fitzgerald fade pass TD for the opening score. The Rams & Cards then traded FGs on the next two drives to make it 10-3 AZ. Bradford would then tie it on his 13-yard TD pass to Cook with :26 left in the half. That was enough time for the Cards to efficiently move into position for a 50-yard FG try but Jay Feely’s attempt was wide right.

On the 3rd snap after intermission CB Trumaine Johnson picked off Palmer and returned the INT to the AZ 4; the Cardinals defense held them to a FG by allowing minus-3 yards in 3 plays. After an AZ punt pinned the Rams at their own 7, the Arizona D stepped up again when LB Matt Shaughnessy batted a Bradford pass in the air and NT Dan Williams hauled it in at the 2 and took it into the end zone for a TD. Up 17-13, Palmer then led the Cards on an 11-play, 83-yard drive that he ended with a 24-yard TD pass to Fitzgerald on 3rd down that made it 24-13 with 1:47 left in the 3rd. The Rams answered with an 80-yard drive capped off by Bradford’s 1-yard TD toss to Cook; that along with a 2-point conversion cut the AZ lead to 3. It was in serious peril a short time later when Palmer was sacked by Robert Quinn, causing a fumble the Rams recovered at the AZ22 with 10:38 left. Arizona’s D again responded holding STL to just 2 yards and a 38-yard game-tying FG. Each side would get the ball back twice more. The Rams capitalized just after the 2:00 warning by moving 50 yards into position for the game-winning FG. 1 2 3 4 OT FCARDINALS 0 10 14 0 — 24RAMS 0 10 3 14 — 27

In a back and forth affair, the Cardinals found themselves down 21-16 late in the 3rd quarter in their home opener against Detroit. From there Arizona would score on 3 of its next 4 drives to earn the team’s first win under new head coach Bruce Arians. Kicker Jay Feely was 4-4 on field goals (47, 23, 43, 33) while a pair of newcomers chipped in with TDs. Rookie RB Andre Ellington hauled in a 36-yard TD pass from Carson Palmer in the 2nd quarter and RB Rashard Mendenhall scored the go-ahead TD from a yard out with 1:59 to play. All-Pro WR Larry Fitzgerald was questionable with a hamstring injury but answered the bell to start and contribute but was forced to exit in the 2nd half. WR Kerry Taylor, who was elevated from the practice squad the day before, came in to catch 3 passes for 40 yards in his 1st NFL action. Punter Dave Zastudil and the Cards special teams units were outstanding pinning the Lions deep in their end most of the afternoon. The victory was Arizona’s 5th straight over the Lions and evened the team’s season record at 1-1.

The game was scoreless until Feely’s 47-yard FG early in the 2nd made it 3-0. Two snaps later, Matthew Stafford hit Calvin Johnson on a short crossing pattern that the all-pro took 72 yards for a score. The Cards answered with a 6-play, 80-yard drive that ended on Ellington’s TD catch down the left sideline. Detroit bettered that on the next series with an even-longer drive (10 plays, 92 yards) and a 3-yard Stafford-to-Johnson TD that made it 14-10 at the half.

Early in the 3rd, DE Calais Campbell recovered a Reggie Bush fumbled hand-off at the DET7 but the Cards had to settle for a Feely FG. Midway through the quarter, Lions LB DeAndre Levy INT’d a Palmer pass and returned it 66 yards for a TD that made it 21-13. Arizona added Feely FGs on its next two possessions (43 & 33 yarders) to cut the deficit to 21-19. Midway thru the 4th quarter special teams ace Justin Bethel blocked David Akers’ 47-yard FG to keep it a 2-point game. With 4:28 to go, Arizona took over at its own 39 and on the 1st play Ellington gained 16 to the DET45. Later on the drive the Cards faced a 3rd-n-8 at the 32 when Andre Roberts was interfered with by Bill Bentley on a deep pass giving the Cards a 1st-n-goal at the 1. Two plays later Mendenhall punched it in with 1:59 remaining. With 1:15 left the Lions had a 4th-n-4 at their own 43 when rookie S Tyrann Mathieu tackled WR Nate Burleson a yard short of the 1st down to seal the game.

2552013 SEASON IN REVIEW

The Cardinals (1-1) traveled to New Orleans to take on the 2-0 Saints in one of the NFL’s more challenging venues for visitors. Nonetheless, Arizona received the opening kickoff and moved 80 yards in 11 plays. QB Carson Palmer completed 4 of 5 passes for 44 yards and RB Alfonso Smith put the Cards up 7-0 with a 3-yard TD run. New Orleans answered quickly, responding with its own 80-yard scoring drive. Most of that yardage came via Drew Brees completions, including a 27-yard game-tying TD pass to WR Robert Meachem. Each team would possess the ball six more times before halftime. All of Arizona’s ended with a Dave Zastudil punt. Of the six New Orleans drives, four ended with punts and one ended when time ran out in the second quarter. The other, however, was a 6-play, 58-yard scoring drive that Brees capped with a 16-yard TD pass to TE Jimmy Graham that put New Orleans up 14-7 at intermission.

The Saints took the opening kickoff of the 2nd half and marched to the AZ29 before Cards rookie safety (and New Orleans native) Tyrann Mathieu intercepted Brees’ 3rd-n-10 pass in the end zone. While the Arizona offense could not find its rhythm, New Orleans added 10 points on consecutive drives with a 31-yard Garrett Hartley FG and a 5-yard Brees TD run on 3rd-n-goal. Trailing 24-7 early in the 4th, the Cardinals desperately needed a score. Palmer completions to Larry Fitzgerald (26 yards) and Michael Floyd (13 & 20) quickly moved the team to the New Orleans 19. However, Palmer’s pass attempt to TE Rob Housler was intercepted by Saints rookie safety Kenny Vaccaro. New Orleans converted that takeway into another Brees-to-Graham TD pass that made it 31-7 and proved to be the final margin.

Foremost among the thoughts of the Cardinals on this afternoon was starting NT Dan Williams, who missed the game after his father Thomas was killed in a car accident traveling from Memphis to New Orleans to watch his son. Fellow DT Darnell Dockett stepped up to record three of Arizona’s four sacks of Brees, matching a career high. During the game, Arizona’s defense lost two starting LBs to injury, Lorenzo Alexander (foot) and Sam Acho (leg). They also lost S Rashad Johnson late in the 2nd quarter when he suffered an injury to his finger that would cause him to lose a portion of it.

In a game each team needed badly, the Cardinals were shut out thru 3 quarters on a steamy, late September afternoon in Tampa. But rather than wilt in the FL sun, Arizona came to life late, taking advantage of 3 Buccaneer turn-overs to erase Tampa’s 10-point 4th quarter lead and emerge with the victory. It was the first time in over 14 years (9/12/99 at Philly) that the Cards over-came a double-digit 4th quarter deficit to win on the road. An injury-ravaged Arizona defense turned in an incredible effort limiting the NFL’s 2nd leading rusher Doug Martin to 45 yards on 27 carries; it also came up with three 4th quarter takeaways, including a pair of INTs from All-Pro CB Patrick Peterson in the game’s final 4 minutes. The win evened Arizona’s record at 2-2 while Tampa fell to 0-4. After playing in New Orleans the previous Sunday, the Cardinals spent the week leading up to the game practicing in nearby Bradenton.

On Arizona’s 2nd offensive series of the game, RB Rashard Mendenhall fumbled and DT Gerald McCoy recovered at the AZ41. The Bucs capitalized when rookie QB Mike Glennon – who was elevated to the starting job over Josh Freeman earlier in the week - hit WR Mike Williams for an 8-yard TD. Late in the 2nd quarter Tampa moved 61 yards in 14 plays and Rian Lindell’s 50-yarder with 0:27 left in the first half made it 10-0 Bucs at intermission.

On their opening drive of the 2nd half the Cards marched from their own 8 to the TB15 thanks in large part to Carson Palmer passes to Larry Fitzgerald (3-41) and Michael Floyd (2-41). However, Palmer’s attempt to Floyd in the end zone was intercepted by rookie CB Johnthan Banks. On their next offen-sive series, the Cards moved to the TB33 but Palmer’s 1st down attempt to Fitzgerald was picked off along the sideline by CB Darrelle Revis. Early in the 4th Tampa had a 10-0 lead and the ball at the AZ 48 when Martin fumbled a hand-off and LB Matt Shaughnessy recovered at midfield. That takeaway led to a 42-yard Jay Feely FG that made it 10-3. After the teams traded punts, Tampa had it deep in its own territory clinging to a 7-point lead. Facing a 2nd-n-6 at his own 11, Glennon tried to hit Vincent Jackson across the middle but Peterson picked it off setting AZ up at the TB13. On the next snap, Fitzgerald beat Revis and Palmer hit him in the end zone for the game-tying score. Arizona’s kickoff coverage then pinned Tampa at its own 10 on and on a 3rd down play from there, newly-acquired Cards LB Dontay Moch sacked Glennon for a 9-yard loss back to the 1. After the punt, Arizona took over at the TB38 with 1:56 left and the game tied at 10. On 1st down Palmer hit rookie WR Jaron Brown with a 19-yard completion down the right sideline and a personal foul penalty on Dashon Goldson moved it to the 9. Four plays later, a short FG by the Tampa-native Feely made it 13-10 with 1:29 left. On the ensuing drive the Bucs advanced to their own 41 with :56 left before Peterson sealed the game with his 2nd INT in a little over 3 minutes.

CARDINALS 22, PANTHERS 6OCTOBER 6, 2013

UNIV . OF PHOENIX STADIUM – (60,426)

After opening with 3 of their first 4 games on the road, the Cardinals returned home to face a Carolina Panthers team coming off a 38-0 win in its last outing. For Arizona, the day would be dominated by defense. That unit recorded 3 interceptions off Cam Newton and 7 sacks, the most by the Cardinals since 1987. DE Calais Campbell had two of the sacks - one resulted in a safety and another forced a fumble that led to an Arizona TD. LB Karlos Dansby also had a pair of sacks plus an INT. All-Pro CB Patrick Peterson halted another Carolina scoring opportunity with his third INT of the year. But the key defensive performance was turned in by Pro Bowl LB Daryl Washington, who returned to the lineup following a 4-game suspen-sion and led the Cardinals with 9 tackles, had two sacks and a huge INT.

On the game’s opening drive, AZ advanced to the CAR4 but Carson Palmer’s pass to Michael Floyd in the end zone was picked off by S Robert Lester. From there, Newton led the Panthers to the AZ4 but his 3rd down pass was dropped in the end zone by Steve Smith and Graham Gano’s 22-yard FG made it 3-0. Arizona tied it midway thru the 2nd on Jay Feely’s 42-yard FG. Carolina threatened on its next 2 drives but came up empty on each. First they turned it over on downs at the AZ15 when they couldn’t pick up a yard on 2nd, 3rd or 4th-n-1. Their next drive reached the AZ33 when Newton went deep down the sideline but Peterson picked it off at the 1 and returned it 43 yards. Palmer led AZ to the CAR23 before his pass was INT’d in the end zone by S Mike Mitchell with :32 remaining in the half. The Panthers quickly moved into position for a 51-yard Gano FG as time expired and Carolina led 6-3 at intermission.

On its opening drive of the 3rd quarter, Arizona moved 85 yards in 10 plays and took the lead when Rashard Mendenhall scored on a 1-yard run. The lead grew to 12-6 on the next drive when Campbell sacked Newton in the end zone for a safety. After the free kick, AZ faced a 3rd-n-8 at the CAR48 when LB Luke Kuechley INT’d a Palmer pass and returned it 30 yards to the AZ29. The Panthers were in prime position to take the lead when they had the ball at the AZ11 facing a 3rd-n-3 on the first play of the 4th quarter. Washington, however, jumped a Newton slant pass and took the INT to midfield. After the Cards couldn’t capitalize, Washington ended the next Carolina drive when he sacked Newton on 3rd down to force a punt. With under 4:00 to play, the Cards sent Feely out for a critical 50-yard FG try; make it and the Cards are up 2 scores, miss it and the Panthers take over at the AZ40 with 3:38 to play and 2 timeouts. He made it and the Cards led 15-6. On the 5th play of the next Panther drive, Campbell sacked Newton forcing a fumble that Antoine Cason returned to the CAR9. That led to a 7-yard Palmer TD pass to TE Jim Dray that made it 22-6. Dansby then provided the final nail on the next drive when he INT’d Newton. 1 2 3 4 OT FPANTHERS 3 3 0 0 — 6CARDINALS 0 3 9 10 — 22

In their final visit to Candlestick Park, the Cardinals had their opportunities to knock off the defending NFC Champs but in the end could not overcome four costly turnovers that led to 16 Niners points. The loss dropped Arizona to 3-3 while San Fran improved to 4-2 with its third straight victory. WR Larry Fitzgerald was a game-time decision with a hamstring injury but answered the bell to catch 6 passes for 117 yards and a 75-yard TD.

Neither the Cardinals nor the 49ers offense picked up a first down on any of their first four possessions. However, two of Arizona’s ended with Carson Palmer INTs that set up San Fran deep in AZ territory. The first by S Eric Reid was returned to the AZ7 while the second by CB Carlos Rogers was returned to the AZ11. In both cases the Cardinals defense came up big, limiting SF to two Phil Dawson FGs that put the hosts up 6-0. Late in the first, the Cards quickly took the lead when Palmer connected with Fitzgerald on a 75-yard scoring pass that was Arizona’s longest since 2008. San Fran was on the verge of more points on its next drive but on 2nd-n-goal from the AZ2, LB Karlos Dansby tipped Colin Kaepernick’s pass and it was INT’d at the goal line by S Yeremiah Bell. The downside was the Cards had to take over inside their own 1 and 3 plays later Palmer was sacked in the end zone for a safety by rookie LB Corey Lemonier. On the 2nd play after the free kick, Kaepernick & TE Vernon Davis connected on a deep TD down the middle that covered 61 yards. The Cardinals struck right back on a 53-yard completion to rookie WR Brittan Golden who was called up from the practice squad earlier in the week. On the next play rookie RB Andre Ellington ran it in from 15 yards out to trim San Fran’s lead to 15-14. Late in the 2nd quarter, Davis capped his big 1st half (7-171-2TDs) with a 35-yard TD from Kaepernick that made it 22-14 at intermission.

On their opening drive of the 3rd quarter, Palmer capped a 9-play, 61-yard drive with 10-yard TD toss to Michael Floyd that made it 22-20 when the 2-point try failed. After a 49er punt, Arizona took over at its own 20 and in 10 plays moved to the SF31 seemingly poised to take the lead. But after catching an 8-yard pass, Fitzgerald fumbled and SF recovered at its own 11. That turning point was followed by an even more pivotal San Fran dive that covered 89 yards in 18 plays and chewed 9:32 off the clock. RB Kendall Hunter ended it with his 6-yard run that put SF up 29-20 with 6:35 left. Any Arizona comeback hopes were dashed on the 2nd play of the ensuing drive when RB Alfonso Smith lost a fumble at the AZ31. The Niners turned that into a 44-yard Dawson FG that provided the game’s final points. 1 2 3 4 OT FCARDINALS 7 7 6 0 — 2049ERS 6 16 0 10 — 32

2572013 SEASON IN REVIEW

In a nationally-televised Thursday night divisional showdown, the Cardinals could not match the offensive output of the visiting Seahawks who scored on their first two drives and never relinquished the lead. QB Russell Wilson threw 3 scoring passes and Marshawn Lynch ran for 91 yards and a TD. Seattle took advantage of two Carson Palmer interceptions, converting each into touchdowns. Cards LB John Abraham notched 2 sacks of Wilson and the AZ defense forced two fumbles of the QB, each of which led to AZ scores. However, Seattle’s dangerous pass rush got to Palmer 7 times and overall held the Cards to 30 rushing yards on 18 attempts. With the win, Seattle improved to 6-1 on the season while Arizona fell to 3-4.

The Seahawks jumped ahead early after Wilson threw TD passes on each of their first two possessions. The first was a 31-yarder to WR Sidney Rice at the end of a 5-play, 83-yard series. The ensuing AZ drive ended when Earl Thomas intercepted a tipped Palmer pass at the SEA28 on a play that was initially ruled incomplete but reversed after a challenge. From there, Wilson took Seattle 72 yards in 11 plays and capped the drive with a 15-yard TD pass to TE Zach Miller. Seattle reached the AZ43 on its next possession but failed to pick up a 1st down on 2nd or 3rd and 1. They went for it on 4th down but linemen Frostee Rucker and Calais Campbell combined to stuff Wilson on a sneak attempt in a key momentum swing. That stop led to a 49-yard Jay Feely FG that made it 14-3 and on the 2nd play of the next Seattle drive the D again came up big. LB Matt Shaughnessy sacked Wilson forcing a fumble that Campbell recovered at the SEA3 (Campbell started just 4 days after leaving the game at San Francisco on a stretcher with a bruised spine). One play later RB Rashard Mendenhall ran it in to make it 14-10. Seattle tacked on a 51-yard Steven Hauschka FG with 0:05 left in the half to make it 17-10 Seattle.

On Arizona’s opening drive of the 3rd quarter, Feely hit a 52-yard FG that pulled the Cards to within 4 at 17-13 but it was as close as they would get. The Seahawks answered by going 80 yards in 10 plays on their next drive and Wilson’s 1-yard TD pass to TE Kellen Davis made it 24-13. CB Brandon Browner then picked off a Palmer pass and returned it to the 1 where Lynch punched it in for a 31-13 lead late in the 3rd. The Cards would add a FG and TD – an 8-yarder from Palmer to rookie WR Jaron Brown - in the 4th quarter but the deficit was too great to overcome, and Arizona suffered its first home loss in 2013.

The Cardinals snapped a 2-game losing streak and improved to 4-4 head-ing into their bye thanks to a decisive 27-13 home win over the Falcons. Heading into the game, Atlanta QB Matt Ryan had been intercepted just 3 times thru 6 games and was sacked an NFL-low 9 times. Defensively, Arizona intercepted Ryan 4 times and sacked him on another 4 occasions. The D also limited Atlanta to 27 yards on 14 rushes and held Steven Jackson to 6 yards on 11 carries. But by far, the biggest individual impact came from rookie RB Andre Ellington who made his 1st career start in place of Rashard Mendenall (toe). The sixth-round draft pick became the 3rd rookie in franchise history to top 150 rushing yards in a game and his 80-yard scoring run tied for the 3rd-longest in franchise history. That TD was part of a 21-point 2nd quarter explosion for Arizona that broke the game open.

The first break of the game however was created by Atlanta when CB Asante Samuel picked off a Carson Palmer pass in the 1st quarter, handing the ball over to the Falcons offense at the AZ31. From there though, the Cards defense held them to just a 24-yard Matt Bryant FG. Arizona would answer quickly. A 22-yard Ellington run was followed by a 51-yard Palmer completion to WR Teddy Williams, a free agent who joined the team 5 days earlier after spending part of the previous season as a DB with the Colts. That led to a 10-yard Larry Fitzgerald TD catch on 3rd-n-goal. Atlanta then made it 7-6 on a 30-yard Bryant FG. However, on the next play from scrimmage Ellington bounced a run outside and raced 80 yards down the left sideline for a TD. After an Atlanta 3-n-out, Palmer’s 15-yard scoring pass to WR Michael Floyd gave Arizona TDs in 3 straight possessions and a 21-6 halftime lead.

In the second half the Cardinals went up 27-6 when Jay Feely extended his streak of successful FGs to 13 by hitting from 38 & 39 yards. Atlanta’s only points came on a late TD pass that came two plays after a Ryan incompletion on 4th down but a debatable pass interference call kept the drive going. Four of Atlanta’s five other 2nd half possessions ended with Ryan interceptions and the other ended when time ran out. Two of the INTs came from S Rashad Johnson while the others came from LB Daryl Washington and S Tyrann Mathieu.

Larry Fitzgerald caught 4 passes to become the youngest player in NFL history to hit 800 career catches. His 2nd quarter touchdown reception also gave him one TD against every other team in the NFC.

258 2014 ARIZONA CARDINALS MEDIA GUIDE

CARDINALS 27, TEXANS 24NOVEMBER 10, 2013

UNIV . OF PHOENIX STADIUM – (60,845)

The Cardinals returned from their bye week to host a Texans team that was 2-6 but had the league’s #1 ranked defense and 8th ranked offense. Arizona received another excellent performance from its own defense that limited the Texans to just 41 total net yards in the second half (32 rushing, 9 passing). The Cards offense chipped in with its own 13-0 run to start the second half en route to a 27-24 win. AZ improved to 5-4 while sending Houston to its 7th straight defeat. Carson Palmer completed 20 of 32 passes for 241 yards with 2 TDs in the victory while LB John Abraham delivered two key sacks.

On the game’s first play from scrimmage, Abraham stripped QB Case Keenum and LB Matt Shaughnessy scooped it up at the 6 before taking it to the end zone for a 7-0 Cards lead. Later in the opening quarter, Keenum tied it with a 7-yard TD pass to Andre Johnson that capped an 8-play, 49-yard drive. Early in the 2nd quarter, TE Rob Housler scored his 1st career TD when he hauled in a 12-yard pass from Palmer that put AZ up 14-7. The Texans answered with a 9-play, 80-yard drive that Keenum ended with a short TD toss to TE Ryan Griffin. Two plays later, Palmer tried to go deep to Housler but was intercepted by safety D.J. Swearinger, turning it over to Houston at the AZ45. That led to a 48-yard Randy Bullock FG that made it 17-14. In the final minute of the first half, a JJ Watt sack forced a fumble that he recovered at the AZ22 with 0:37 left. The Arizona D forced Houston to settle for a 40-yard FG try but special teams ace Justin Bethel blocked it as the half expired.

On their 2nd drive after intermission, the Cards moved into position for a 35-yard Jay Feely FG that tied the game at 17. AZ penetrated deep into Texan territory on its next drive and came away with a 21-yard Feely FG that made it 20-17. The Texans meanwhile went three-n-out on each of their first 3 drives of the 2nd half. After the 3rd, AZ took over at its own 33 before moving 67 yards in 9 plays and Palmer hit WR Andre Roberts with a 19-yard TD that put AZ up 10 with 6:42 to go. Roberts stepped up after Michael Floyd exited with a shoulder injury and finished with a game-high 72 yards on 5 catches. When AZ forced another punt on the next drive, the Cards took over at their own 5 with 4:53 remaining. On the next play, Rashard Mendenhall was stopped at the line and somewhere in the pile the ball came loose. After huddling, officials ruled it a fumble and Houston ball. Three plays later Keenum & Johnson connected on a 5-yard TD that made it a 3-point game with 4:34 to go. The Cards picked up one 1st down before RB Andre Ellington was ruled short on a 3rd-n-7 and they had to punt. One final stop by the AZ defense was needed and it delivered when Jerraud Powers slapped away a 4th down pass.

Houston was without head coach Gary Kubiak who was recovering from health issues and defensive coordinator Wade Phillips filled in. The game marked the Cardinals 80th straight sellout at University of Phoenix Stadium and the team eclipsed 5 million total fans at the venue that opened in 2006. 1 2 3 4 OT FTEXANS 7 10 0 7 — 24CARDINALS 7 7 6 7 — 27

The Cardinals improved to 6-4 and notched their 3rd straight victory with a 13-point win at Jacksonville. The Jags scored touchdowns on their first 2 pos-sessions of the game but not after that as the Arizona defense grew stronger as the game went on. Offensively, Carson Palmer had his best day as a Cardinal completing 30 of 42 passes (to 9 different receivers) for 419 yards with a pair of TDs and no INTs. WR Michael Floyd was questionable with a shoulder sprain heading into the game but turned in one of the best statistical days ever by a Cards receiver with 6 catches for 193 yards and a 91-yard TD. The Cardinals forced two turnovers but for the first time all year committed none themselves.

The Jaguars jumped out to an early lead on the game’s opening drive when they went for it on 4th-n-1 at their own 38. On play action, QB Chad Henne lofted a short pass TE Danny Noble that he took 62 yards for a TD on his first career reception. The Cards answered immediately with a 10-play, 80-yard drive that ended with a 14-yard Palmer TD pass to Larry Fitzgerald. Jordan Todman returned the ensuing kickoff 59 yards to the AZ46 and 7 plays later Maurice Jones-Drew punched it in from a yard out. The Cards appeared to stop Jax on 3rd-n-goal but a taunting penalty on S Yeremiah Bell kept the drive alive. Jones-Drew scored on the next play to put the Jags up 14-7 with 5:08 left in the 1st quarter. Those would be Jacksonville’s final points of the day. Just before halftime Palmer completed a 21-yard pass to TE Rob Housler followed by a pair of 22-yarders to Floyd that set up Rashard Mendenhall’s 5-yard TD run. When Jacksonville’s Josh Scobee’s 60-yard FG try missed as the half expired, the game was tied 14-14 at intermission.

Arizona opened the 3rd with a 9-play, 77-yard drive that ended with Jay Feely’s 21-yard FG. The next Cards possession saw them backed up deep in their own territory. Facing a 3rd-n-10 from the AZ9, Palmer hit Floyd at the 25 before the WR eluded a host of defenders, breaking multiple tackles en route to a 91-yard TD. It was the team’s longest pass play since 1988 and 6th longest in team history. Leading 24-14, the Arizona defense had all it would need. Of Jacksonville’s seven 2nd half possessions, 4 ended with punts, one when the Jags turned it over on downs and two via Cardinals interceptions (Jerraud Powers & Bell). The only remaining points came on Feely’s 32-yard FG midway through the 4th.

The win kept Arizona very much in the thick of the playoff race at 6-4 while dropping the Jaguars to 1-9. With the victory, Bruce Arians became the first Cardinals coach to record six wins in his first 10 games since Charley Winner went 7-2-1 in 1966.

2592013 SEASON IN REVIEW

Riding a 3-game winning streak, the 6-4 Cardinals hosted the AFC South leading Colts (7-3) who entered the game with a 4-1 road record. In this match-up, though, the biggest storyline was first-year Arizona head coach Bruce Arians facing the squad with which he earned Coach of the Year honors while subbing for Chuck Pagano. It was against this backdrop that the Cardinals turned in one of their most dominant overall efforts in recent memory that was every bit as one-sided as the 40-11 score might indicate. Arizona jumped all over Indy early and led 27-3 after two on the strength of a 20-point 2nd quarter; the halftime stats saw the Cards with a 17-5 lead in first downs, 274-56 edge in total net yards and an almost 2-to-1 advantage in time of possession. Continuing his torrid stretch, QB Carson Palmer twice found Larry Fitzgerald with TD passes and spread his 26 completions among 10 different receivers. For the 2nd straight week, the Cards played a turnover-free game while the defense was again extremely strong limiting Andrew Luck to just 163 yards on 20-39 passing and holding Indy to 80 rushing yards on 15 carries. The D made its one takeaway count when LB Karlos Dansby returned an INT off Luck for a TD.

The Cards had scoring opportunities on each of its 1st 4 possessions. On the game-opening drive, they moved 80 yards in 10 plays and went up 7-0 on a Palmer-to-Fitzgerald TD. On their next series, Indy blocked a 28-yard FG try that kept the lead at 7 and then scored a FG of its own. The Colts would not score again until the game was well in hand in the 4th quarter. Fitzgerald caught another TD pass to make it 14-3 and Jay Feely’s 48-yard FG made it 17-3 midway thru the 2nd. On the next Indy drive, DT Darnell Dockett pressured Luck forcing him to hurry a pass that Dansby hauled in and returned 22 yards for a TD. Feely’s 50-yard FG as the half expired made it 27-3 at intermission. Earlier in the 2nd quarter, Fitzgerald became the youngest player in NFL history to eclipse 11,000 receiving yards.

The Cards proceeded to work the clock and nurse that lead in the 2nd half. The 3rd quarter’s only points came when RB Rashard Mendenhall scored from 5 yards out; Mendenhall had a very productive game both running and receiving. With 10:26 left in the game, Luck and TE Coby Fleener connected on a 17-yard TD pass but two more Feely FGs made the final score 40-11. WR Michael Floyd topped 100 receiving yards for the 2nd straight game while Palmer eclipsed 300 passing for the 2nd game in a row. 1 2 3 4 OT FCOLTS 3 0 0 8 — 11CARDINALS 7 20 7 6 — 40

In a pivotal game for both teams, the 7-4 Cardinals headed to Philly riding a 4-game win streak to face a 6-5 Eagles team that had won 3 straight. Arizona had not turned the ball over in either of its previous two games but com-mitted three in this one including on each of its first two drives. They were costly and helped the Eagles take a 24-7 lead early in the 2nd half before the Cards clawed back. A pair of late Carson Palmer TD passes pulled it to within 3 with just under 5 minutes remaining. However any hopes for completing the comeback were dashed by a series of pivotal calls from referee Tony Corrente and his crew. The loss dealt a blow to Arizona’s playoff chances as they fell to 7-5 with 4 games remaining.

On the game’s 3rd play Palmer was hit while attempting to throw a deep ball and the Eagles recovered the fumble at the AZ25. They cashed in 4 plays later when Nick Foles found TE Zach Ertz with a 6-yard TD pass. Midway through the 2nd Arizona faced a 3rd-n-20 when Palmer threw it in tight coverage to Larry Fitzgerald who bounced off a defender and took it 43 yards for a game-tying TD. For Fitzgerald it was his 10th TD in 6 career games vs. the Eagles. Philly responded with a 9-play, 64-yard drive that netted a 32-yard Alex Henery FG. Just before halftime they went up 17-7 thanks to a short TD set-up when officials flagged AZ for defensive pass interference in the end zone.

The Eagles increased their lead on the opening drive of the 2nd half when Foles capped a 13-play, 80-yard drive with his 2nd TD pass of the day to Ertz, a 24-yarder that made it 24-7. Arizona would not go away. On the next drive, the Cards pulled to within 10 when Palmer connected with Michael Floyd on a 23-yard TD at the end of a 10-play, 80-yard drive. As the AZ defense was limiting the Eagles fast-paced offense, the Cards threatened. On the next series, though, Palmer’s deep pass to Andre Roberts was picked off by CB Cary Williams to halt that drive. With 7:20 to go AZ took over at its own 14 and Palmer moved the unit downfield on a drive that he ended with a 3-yard TD pass to TE Jim Dray that made it 24-21 with 4:45 left. On the 2nd play of the next Philly drive, Patrick Peterson intercepted a Foles pass, appearing to set AZ up at the PHI36; however away from the play S Tyrann Mathieu was flagged for defensive holding to wipe away the game-changing play. The Cards then forced a punt and took over at their own 10 with 2:03 left. After picking up 5 yards on 1st down, incompletions on the next 3 plays turned it over on downs. On the 2nd & 4th down passes to Floyd there appeared to be an abundance of defensive contact that went unflagged. Three plays later the Cards appeared to force Philly to settle for a FG when LB Matt Shaughnessy sacked Foles on 3rd down but Corrente penalized him for defensive holding on the play and the game ended there. 1 2 3 4 OT FCARDINALS 0 7 7 7 — 21EAGLES 7 10 7 0 — 24

The Cardinals entered their Week 14 home game against the Rams looking to keep pace in a crowded NFC playoff field and end an 8-game skid against NFC West opponents. They accomplished both with a 20-point victory. QB Carson Palmer was questionable entering the game with an elbow injury suffered the week before in Philly and did not throw a pass in practice all week. Come game time, however, he was very sharp completing 27 of 32 passes for the 2nd-best single-game completion percentage in team history (84.4). WR Larry Fitzgerald hauled in 12 of those passes for 96 yards and a score. The AZ defense was again tremendous. LB Karlos Dansby had an INT return TD while John Abraham recorded 3 sacks of Kellen Clemens including one for a safety. Dansby’s pick-six was his 2nd in 3 games and 4th as a Cardinal, 3rd-most in team behind only Aeneas Williams (6) & Larry Wilson (5). Abraham’s 3 sacks gave him 11 for the year and allowed him to move past Lawrence Taylor & Leslie O’Neal into 9th on the NFL’s all-time list. Fitzgerald’s TD was his 10th of the year and 87th of his career. Arizona’s offensive line allowed just one sack (none from dangerous pass rushers Robert Quinn & Chris Long) and controlled the line of scrimmage, helping the Cards earn a 10-minute edge in time of possession.

On the game’s opening drive, AZ moved 80 yards in 8 plays and RB Rashard Mendenhall scored on a 3-yard run. St. Louis answered with a 44-yard Greg Zuerlein FG to make it 7-3. Early in the 2nd, Palmer seemingly connected with TE Jim Dray on a 17-yard TD pass but upon further review, officials ruled Dray fumbled just short of the goal line. With :50 left in the half, though, Palmer hit Fitzgerald with a 7-yard score that made it 14-3. Palmer opened the game with 11 straight completions and was 16-17 at intermission.

On the 2nd play of the 3rd quarter, DE Calais Campbell pressured Clemens as he was throwing and Dansby picked off the attempt, returning it 23 yards for a pivotal score. Later in the quarter, the Cards downed a Dave Zastudil punt at the 1 and on 3rd down, Abraham smothered Clemens in the end zone for a safety. On the ensuing free kick, however, AZ lost tal-ented rookie S Tyrann Mathieu for the season when he injured his knee on the return. St. Louis’ only TD of the game was set-up when Tavon Austin took an end around 56 yards to the AZ4 and Zac Stacy punched it in from the 1. The Austin run accounted for more than half of St. Louis’ 100 rush-ing yards for the day. Late in the 4th, S Rashad Johnson INT’d Clemens setting up a 6-yard Andre Ellington TD run with 1:55 left. 1 2 3 4 OT FRAMS 3 0 0 7 — 10CARDINALS 7 7 9 7 — 30

In a chilly late afternoon game in Nashville, the Cardinals seemed to clinch their 9th win of the year when CB Antoine Cason returned an INT off Ryan Fitzpatrick for a TD to put AZ up 34-17 with 6:13 left. But the Titans stormed back to score 17 points in the final 3:12 to send the game to overtime. On the opening drive of the extra period Cason again picked off Fitzpatrick to set-up Jay Feely’s game-winning FG. With the win AZ improved to 9-5 and remained a game behind San Fran & Carolina for a wild card spot. Rookie RB Andre Ellington became the first Cardinal in more than a decade to lead the team in both rushing and receiving yards and fellow RB Rashard Mendenhall scored two rushing TDs.

The Titans opened the scoring with a 45-yard Rob Bironas FG on their 1st series. AZ responded with a 77-yard drive on which Ellington had a 13-yard run & 26-yard reception; it ended with Mendenhall’s 1-yard TD run. On the final play of the 1st quarter, Fitzpatrick scrambled in the pocket before finding Chris Johnson down the left sideline for a 25-yard TD. The Cards again answered. Feely’s 25-yard FG capped a 13-play, 67-yard drive that made it 10-10 at intermission.

On the opening kickoff of the 2nd half, LB Patrick Bailey muffed a short kickoff and Cason recovered at the TEN23. That led to a 47-yard Feely FG that put AZ up 13-10. Tennessee responded with a lengthy drive that ended on a 1-yard TD catch from Delanie Walker. On the 15-play series they converted four separate 3rd-n-longs and were aided by 4 defensive penalties. For the game AZ was penalized 9 times for 96 yards by Pete Morelli’s crew (Titans 3-16). Late in the 3rd, Carson Palmer’s 6-yard TD pass to TE Jake Ballard put AZ up 20-17. After the Titans missed a 50-yard FG early in the 4th, the Cards cashed in with a TD drive that made it 27-17. Cason’s pick 6 on the next series made it 34-17 before TEN mounted its comeback. Fitzpatrick’s 10-yard TD pass to Michael Preston made it 34-24 with 3:12 left. After a 3-n-out, the Titans got a 24-yard Bironas FG with :47 remaining and then recov-ered the on-side kick. Preston tied it at 34 with :10 left when he caught an 8-yard pass from Fitzpatrick. Tennessee won the toss in OT and got the ball first, but on the 3rd play, with the Titans at the AZ43, Cason picked off Fitzpatrick and returned it to the AZ46. Five Mendenhall runs gained 22 yards and a Jim Dray catch netted 9, putting AZ in position for Feely’s game-winner that went right down the middle. 1 2 3 4 OT FCARDINALS 7 3 10 14 3 37TITANS 10 0 7 17 0 34

2612013 SEASON IN REVIEW

49ERS 23, CARDINALS 20DECEMBER 29, 2013

UNIV . OF PHOENIX STADIUM – (63,570)

The Cardinals entered the regular season finale needing a win over the 49ers and a Saints home loss to the Bucs to clinch a playoff berth. They received neither. But as they had all year, the Cards fought and clawed, nearly overcoming a 17-point early deficit to claim victory. After tying the game twice in the final 3:20, a Niners FG as time expired gave them a 23-20 win and the #5 seed. Carson Palmer threw for 407 yards and became the first in NFL history with 4,000-yard passing seasons for 3 different teams. Larry Fitzgerald led the way with 6 catches for 113 yards.

San Fran led 17-0 after one quarter. Phil Dawson’s 27-yard FG opened the scoring and on the 2nd play of the ensuing drive, Palmer’s pass to Michael Floyd was INT’d by LB NaVorro Bowman at the AZ22. Five plays later on 3rd-n-goal from the 4, Kaepernick hit WR Anquan Boldin for a TD that put SF up 10-0. On the next drive AZ converted a key 4th-n-1 from the SF44 and advanced to 19 but Jay Feely’s 27-yard FG was no good. Boldin then hurt the Cards again with a 63-yard catch-n-run to the 3 that led to a Vernon Davis TD that made it 17-0. The defense then clamped down, especially vs. the run as it limited the 49ers to 83 yards on 23 runs; all-pro Frank Gore was contained to 14 yards on 13 attempts. Late in the 2nd quarter, the Cards launched their best drive to that point when they moved deep into 49er territory thanks largely to a 49-yard Fitzgerald completion to the SF23. On 4th-n-goal at the 1, Palmer faked to Rashard Mendenhall and found TE Jake Ballard alone in the end zone for a TD. Right before the half, San Fran threatened again but Dawson’s 24-yard try was no good.

A Mendenhall fumble on the Arizona’s opening drive of the 3rd quarter turned it over at the AZ37. SF faced a 4th-n-1 at the AZ16 but the Cards stuffed them for no gain. After no points were scored in the 3rd quarter, Feely’s 49-yard FG :13 into the 4th made it 17-10. The Cards has a chance to further reduce the deficit on the next drive but Feely missed from 43. With 3:30 to play and AZ still trailing by 7, they faced a 3rd-n-13 at the SF 34. Palmer lofted it down the left sideline and Andre Roberts came down with it in the end zone to tie the game at 17. The Niners struck right back moving 41 yards into position for a 56-yard Dawson FG that made it 20-17 with 1:45 to go. The Cards wouldn’t go away. Two Palmer passes to Rob Housler covered 25 yards and a 23-yarder to Fitzgerald set-up Feely’s 43-yard FG that tied it again with :29 left. A 45-yard kickoff return and a pair of quick passes moved SF 42 yards and Dawson’s 40-yarder won it as time expired. 1 2 3 4 OT F49ERS 17 0 0 6 — 23CARDINALS 0 7 0 13 — 20

The Cardinals entered their Week 16 game at Seattle knowing a loss would eliminate them from playoff consideration after Carolina won earlier in the afternoon. Standing in their way was a Seahawks team with the NFL’s best record (12-2) looking to clinch the division title and home field throughout the playoffs. The Seahawks (who defeated AZ 58-0 a year before in Seattle) had the NFL’s #1 ranked defense and had not lost at home in two years (a streak of 14 games) and a starting QB (Russell Wilson) who had never lost at home. But on the strength of an incredible defensive effort, the Cards overcame 4 turnovers and came up with a clutch late touchdown to record the important victory. The D allowed Seattle just 192 yards and 10 first downs while forcing 9 punts. It held Wilson to just 108 passing yards and All-Pro RB Marshawn Lynch to 71 yards in 18 rushes (7-11 in the 2nd half).

Arizona got the ball to start the game and had a great opportunity to strike first when Carson Palmer hit WR Brittan Golden on a 63-yard pass play to the SEA13. However, on 3rd-n-2 at the 5, Palmer’s pass into the end zone was deflected in the air off the hand of TE Rob Housler and was intercepted by SS Kam Chancellor. Later in the 1st, the Cards advanced to the SEA33 on a 26-yard Andre Ellington run but on 3rd-n-13 from the SEA36, Palmer tried to thread a pass to Larry Fitzgerald but was INT’d by CB Richard Sherman. Early in the 2nd quarter, Steven Hauschka’s 27-yard FG made it 3-0. Arizona soon tied it when Jay Feely’s 39-yard FG capped a 16-play, 75-yard drive. Late in the 1st half, Seattle was poised to reclaim the lead when Palmer’s 3rd down pass was tipped at the line and INT’d by LB Malcolm Smith who returned it 32 yards to the AZ3. From there, the Cards stuffed Lynch twice and forced an incompletion on 3rd down. A false start penalty backed Seattle up 5 yards and Hauschka’s 24-yard try clanked off the left upright to keep the game tied 3-3.

The defensive battle intensified in the 3rd quarter when the 1st 7 drives ended in punts. Late in the quarter, AZ capitalized on great field position when Feely connected from 46 yards out to make it 6-3. When Justin Bethel recovered Robert Turbin’s fumble on the ensuing kickoff, the Cards took over at the SEA18. However, Palmer’s 3rd down pass into the end zone was again INT’d by Sherman. A 26-yard Feely FG on the next AZ drive made it 9-3 with 10:40 to go. Seattle then scored the game’s 1st TD when Wilson hit TE Zach Miller with an 11-yard TD pass. A rare blocked PAT try seemed to keep the score tied at 9 but an even rarer penalty was called on Daryl Washington for lining up too close to the cen-ter and the re-try was good. Down 1 with 7:26 to go, AZ took over at its own 20. On 3rd-n-3 at the 27 Palmer scrambled from the pocket before finding TE Jake Ballard for 17 and a key 1st down. With 2:20 to go and facing a 3rd-n-6 at the SEA31, Palmer lofted a pass down the left sideline that Michael Floyd hauled in for his only catch of the day. That and Rashard Mendenhall’s successful 2-point conversion run made it 17-10. On the next play from scrimmage, Wilson’s pass to Doug Baldwin bounced off the WR’s forearm and into the air where it was caught by LB Karlos Dansby for a game-icing INT. 1 2 3 4 OT FCARDINALS 0 3 3 11 — 17SEAHAWKS 0 3 0 7 — 10
