Dear MJHS Hospice Supporters:Thank you for joining us this evening for our annual Hospice on Broadway fundraising event.

Your generosity and presence here tonight is an inspiration to everyone who cares deeply

about the availability of quality end-of-life care for all New Yorkers.

By participating in this wonderful event, you make it possible for us to continue our mission

of providing support and care to children and adults who are facing an advanced illness. Our

primary goal is to help people live as pain-free, fully and comfortably as possible. Our team

of professionals and volunteers are committed to helping patients live life to the fullest. We

also provide family and friends with advocacy and education to better prepare them to cope

with a loved one’s illness.

Despite the fact that insurance does not cover many of our specialty and culturally specific

programs, such as Art & Soul™ and pastoral support, we are mission-driven to provide them

because of the demonstrative difference they make in quality of life for our patients and their

families. This would not be possible without grants from the MJHS Foundation, which relies

on support from generous donors like you.

MJHS Hospice is committed to serving the diverse populations in our region with cultural

sensitivity and flexibility during this difficult time. Through interdisciplinary teams of medical

professionals, social workers, clergy and therapists, MJHS is able to provide palliative care

(relief from symptoms) as well as the emotional and spiritual support vital to our patients

living each precious day to its fullest.

We work closely with patients and their families to provide care and treatment when and

where it’s needed most. Whether this means providing care at home, in assisted living

communities or nursing homes, one of our exceptional MJHS Hospice residences or

hospitals across Greater New York and Nassau County, we bring necessary services to our

patients. When days cannot be added to life, MJHS adds life to days.

On behalf of our staff and volunteers at MJHS Hospice and Palliative Care, I want to thank

you for your ongoing support, without which we would not be able to touch so many lives.

I wish you and your loved ones a happy and healthy new year.

Sincerely,

Barbara HineyExecutive Vice PresidentMJHS Hospice and Palliative Care

Hospice on Broadway is our annual event to raise awareness and funding in support of the unique programs and services of MJHS Hospice. Music and art therapy, care-giver support groups, spiritual care, and our bereavement program are just some of the services that have led MJHS to become one of the most respected hospice and palliative care programs in the region. Unfortunately, these valuable programs are not funded by health insurance and are only made possible through your generous philanthropic support.

About MJHS FoundationMJHS Foundation provides financial assistance for the charitable health care efforts of MJHS. The philanthropic spirit of The Four Brooklyn Ladies has been a cornerstone and guiding philosophy of MJHS for more than 100 years. Th culture of philanthropy they inspired led to the formation of MJHS Foundation. The Foundation supports MJHS by raising and allocating funds necessary to ensure the continuation of our high-quality health care programs and services that serve the needs of the Greater New York Area. The extraordinary work of MJHS would not be possible without grants from MJHS Foundation, which relies on the support from grateful families and individual donors, like you.

“ My father was diagnosed with cancer when he was 51. The news was hard to take,

especially for my children, Benjamin and Victoria, then ages 6 and 5. It was Art & Soul™,

an MJHS Hospice creative art therapy program for children, that drew us all together in the

most remarkable ways.

My children were always excited to see their creative arts therapist. He helped them recall

memories and encouraged them to connect images to different experiences and feelings.

He also helped my children understand things at their own level.

Over time, my children began opening up more. When they were at peace with what was

happening around them, I felt at peace.

Creative arts therapy is a wonderful way to let children speak and heal. I will always be

grateful that MJHS Hospice professionals—they focus on what matters most, so families

like mine can enjoy precious moments and draw on a lifetime of beautiful memories.”

Your gift helps us care for others like Leah and her children.

“ Our MJHS art therapist would always gently ask my children questions or introduce a topic. They trusted him so much, that they would pour their hearts out.”

THANK YOUTHANK YOU

What is hospice?Hospice is a specialized program of care and services for you or a loved one who has a life-limiting or advanced illness. Hospice focuses on comfort, not curing, with the fundamental principle that each of us has the right to live each day pain-free and with dignity. Hospice treats the full range of needs, with special consideration and attention given to a patient’s physical, emotional and spiritual well-being while providing support for the family.

What makes MJHS Hospice special? As a charitable not-for-profit, MJHS Hospice is committed to putting our patients and their families first, delivering compassionate expert care, offering peace of mind and providing comfort. We set ourselves apart through our dedicated interdisciplinary care team, by providing exceptional specialty and culturally-specific programs, offering hospice services in full range of settings and by serving the unique needs of children. In fact, MJHS is one of the few programs in New York State to receive a Department of Health Waiver allowing MJHS to provide hospice and palliative care services to pediatric patients who are actively receiving curative treatment for their life-limiting condition.

Who is part of the MJHS Hospice Interdisciplinary Care Team?At MJHS Hospice, each patient benefits from a specially trained team consisting of:

Where are MJHS Hospice services offered?MJHS Hospice services are offered in a variety of settings so we are able to best serve the needs of our patients. Bronx, Brooklyn, Queens and Nassau County.

For patients who wish to stay in a hospice residence, MJHS has several options:

Page 13: 2013 hob journal fnl1

What specialty programs and services are provided by MJHS Hospice? We understand that each family has its own special sensitivities. That’s why we have developed these specialty programs to address these unique needs.

• Halachic Pathway • Holocaust survivor care • Ang Ling, MJHS Asian Hospice program • Multi-lingual staff that also speaks: Chinese (Mandarin, Cantonese, Fukanese), Spanish,

Russian and Korean

Other programs and services include:

• Palliative Care • Pediatric Hospice and Palliative Care • Art & Soul™ Creative Arts Therapy • Round-the-clock on-call services • Bereavement Counseling • Peace in the Storm caregiver support • Volunteer Support

Your support helps assure the continuation of these valuable programs and services.

Who can receive hospice care?Hospice care is available at any age. However, MJHS is one the few hospice programs that cares for children. The criteria for hospice eligibility are established by state and federal regulations and require certification from a licensed physician.

How is MJHS Hospice building and planning for the future? We have a bold vision to change the way end-of-life care is delivered. The Sixteen Lights Capital Campaign, which broke ground in September 2012, will bring the concept of hospice into the 21st century. The centerpiece will be the MJHS Hospice Inpatient Residence at Menorah Center for Rehabilitation and Nursing Care. This unique oceanfront hospice inpatient residence will be the first in NYC to care for children as well as adults. In keeping with our values and traditions this much-needed residence will provide an oasis of comfort and support to people of all cultures and ages.

How is hospice paid for?Hospice services are paid for like any other service and should be covered by a patient’s insurance plan.Costs for the extraordinary supplementary services offered by our hospice program are offset, in part, by grants from MJHS Foundation, which relies on the support of generous donors like you.
