My Dear Members

Carpe Diem!! Seize The Day… and don’t miss the full calendar of activities your club has to offer this summer. Please remember the time and effort our committee chairs and committees devote to making sure that you as Members, have the best possible experience here at the club.

First, I want to thank the Ladies Auxiliary for their continued work to improve our club. Not only did they recently polish all the silver in our trophy case (check out the shine), but also they are about to purchase a player piano for our chart room. What a wonderful and generous addition that can provide a wide variety of background music to the incredible view at our facility.

Skipper Kalil and his Committee, working with our General Manager, Steve Chatelain continue to spend hours discussing ways to improve house operations. As with any club our size, there must be subtle adjustments to keep us on course.

The Gulfport Yacht Club was well represented in this years infamous Race For The Case. Congrats to John Dane on his boat War Canoe, with a 1st place in the Race For The Case. John had excellent tactical assis-tance from our Sailing Committee Chairman, Sam Hopkins, and our Docks and Piers Chairman Michael Hage, along with several other seaworthy crew. Even your Commodore got a 3rd in non-spinnler class, sailing our Beneteau, with the critical assistance of 2 outstanding junior sailors, Sam Hopkins Jr. and my son, Jacob Seic-shnaydre. Of course, the Mamadore’s decisive timing of when to tact made all the difference.

Pascal Johnson, our Pool Chairman has been working closely with Steve and Jay, our Property Mainte-nance Supervisor, to design suitable shade solutions for our pool deck participants.

After much deliberation, the Wine Committee will shortly release new wines to be added to our men-us. Expect better taste sensations.

NOTICE: During this years LUAU, we have a special event. Sam Vasquez, our Sailing Director, is grow-ing out his hair to be donated to Locks of Love. During the luau, you will have the opportunity to cut a lock of his hair. It will be a lot of fun.

And finally, please come down to the club this summer to observe and support our sailing regattas, swim team events, entertainment venues and club parties. See ya at the club.

Dr. Michael Seicshnaydre

Hat Trick - GYC Boats Win 1st, 1st and 1st

On the weekend of May 18 three members of Gulfport Yacht Club’s classic wooden boat fleet participated in the Billy Creel Wooden Boat Festival in Biloxi. This event is sponsored each year by the Biloxi Mar-itime & Seafood Industry Museum.

Past Commodore Johnny Atherton on the “Bout Time”, Past Commo-dore Wayne Tisdale on the “Alligator” and Skipper John Heath aboard the “Loophole” made the run to the Biloxi Schooner pier on Friday, June 17 for the show the following Saturday and Sunday. The wind was a little “blustery” at 10-15 out of the SSE but it was no match for the classic wooden vessels of GYC. Upon arrival and securing the boats the skippers and their crew worked to make the boats shipshape and look ahead to the weekend of fun, food and people who love wooden boats.

At the Biloxi Show this year there were 7 categories of vessels to be judged both in the water and on trailers. The classes as defined created a situation wherein the GYC vessels were not in competition with each other but rather with the other boats in the show in classes that utilized their length in the overall definition of power vessels

Once again representatives of the GYC fleet of wooden vessels were recognized as all being First Class:

In Water Power Boats:

Skipper John Heath; Loophole 1st in class less than 40 feet

Past Commodore Johnny Atherton; Bout Time 1st in class 41-47 feet Past Commodore Wayne Tisdale; Alligator 1st in class 48-100 feet. Past Commodore Atherton’s Bout Time also won the Perpetual Judges Award which brings the total awards won by GYC boats to four.

There were approximately 45 beautiful wooden vessels participating including those in the water and also on trailers.

Each year many of GYC’s fleet of wooden vessels participate in this show and also in the Madisonville Wooden Boat Show in October in Madisonville, Louisiana. This is a great favorite among GYC activities at which the Powerboat Committee spon-sors a rendezvous for these classic vessels as well as their inferior cousins in the GYC Plastic Boat Society.

The Plastic Boat Society of the GYC is presided over by Plastidore Dickie Dunnaway. Past Plastidore Woody Bailey is ru-mored to be planning a campaign to re-claim his position of leadership but Plastidore Dickie and First Mate Nancy aboard GlasSea will make formidable opponents. They are known to be much more generous with the spoils of this lofty position than was Past Plastidore Bailey who is reputed to be very “frugal” with the booty taken on the high seas. The GYC plastic ves-sels do not usually make the trip to the Biloxi event as it does not lend itself to visiting boats as does Madisonville.

Their notable absence leads to a very suspicious occurrence in that nowhere to be seen were the infamous Pirates of the Tchfuncte. These scurrilous mariners are greatly feared by those that might accidently find themselves alone along the banks of the Tchfuncte and other ports of call on the Mississippi Sound. Innocent sailors have been known to disappear while on shore leave when these scourges of the high seas are around. It was only a few short years ago that Past Commodore Law-rence Hage was almost victim to a life of indentured servitude aboard the pirate vessel Miss Alabama captained by the most dastardly pirate of all… No Beard. It was only the courageous actions of the brave seaman of the GYC – Boson Louis Bell, Past Commodore Michael Hage, Quartermaster Sherman Muths III, Ship’s Carpenter George Boddie and Quartermaster Creighton that he was plucked from their grasp at great risk to themselves facing the flashing cutlass’ of No Beard’s crew of misfits with naught but flounder gig’s as weapons just before the dark ship sailed for ports unknown.

These scourges of the seas only seem to appear when the Plastic Boat Society is present and active - meaning loud music, flowing spirits, and suspicious characters (some with wooden peg legs) dancing aboard these plastic vessels to all hours of the night and feasting on libations lavished on them by Plastidore Dunnaway. Even the notorious No Beard seems invisible until such times present themselves. It is told that when he makes his unwelcome appearance he becomes invisible from his consumption of that devil rum and as the evening wears on he becomes bullet proof (in his own mind).

Hmmmmm…. This might make one question if the Pirates themselves might not dwell secretly within this Society. Could No Beard himself be among them??? This log entry by Past Commodore Wayne Tisdale of the M/V Alligator

It is not to late to sign up for GYC Summer Swimming & Sailing Camps!

I have posted in this Log a copy of the deck party agreement for your review. When having any deck activity or pool par-ty this agreement must be signed and approved by Man-agement.

Summer is an extremely busy time at the club with a num-ber of children using our facilities, having fun at the beach, sailing and pool with family and friends. I need to mention a few things to keep in mind from a safety point of view. Par-ents please remind your children running in the Clubhouse, Tiki Bar Area, Parking Lot and Pool is not permitted. The parking lot is always a concern of mine because our drivers don’t always see children especially if they are running. The rocks on the beach around the water have very sharp shells that could cut your foot or the loose rocks could become a hazard. Please try to stay away from these areas. Children are not allowed to sit at the Tiki Bar or Main Bar where al-cohol beverages are sold. The safety of our children, mem-bers, guests and staff is a high priority for Management and the Board. Let’s be Safe and have a Fun summer at GYC!!! I would like to thank the Ladies Auxiliary for taking the time to polish our Trophies and clean our Trophy Cases. Also, each year the Ladies Auxiliary uses funds from their budget to help the Club with needed expenditures that are not budgeted through operations. This is a great help to the Club and the Board and Management are grateful.
