although it is typical for students to be nervous about choosing the ‘right’ major, it is crucial that students be proactive and take the necessary steps to selecting a major as early as possible. to help with selecting a major we encourage students to utilize the resources listed below that are available at Florida international university.
Academic Advising Center
Speak to an advisor in PC 249 if you are exploring majors as they assist students in many ways:
• interpreting MyMajorMatch results. this assessment is available when logging into my.fiu.edu, under the academics tab.
• Learning about the Workshops and major-related Professional Panels offered every semester. Workshop topics include: how to Choose a Major, networking 101, time Management, Course registration, and Linking Courses with Career Skills, and interested in the health Field but not wanting to Pursue Medical School.

recommended checklists for you and your student to
consider in the upcoming days before classes begin.
Parent/Family Member Checklist:
• discuss with your student what your expectations are for his or her college experience, and what this means for your relationship over the next few years. Consider the following topics: academics, transportation, finances, communication, and family responsibilities.
• Chat with your student about the differences between high school and college. Encourage your student to familiarize his or herself with the various resources on campus.
• Encourage your student to register for Panther Camp.
• Join the Panther Parents association.
• Sign up to receive monthly email updates through the Fiu Parent newsletter at orientatin.fiu.edu/parents.
• Familiarize yourself with the academic Calendar, available online at: onestop.fiu.edu.

Panther Camp is a great way for incoming students to meet other new students before they start their Fiu college experience. this year we will have four sessions for your student to choose from:

Panther Camp is a unique opportunity that is only available to students as they are entering their first year at Fiu. the Panther Camp experience focuses on assisting first year students in building relationships with other Fiu students, fostering school spirit, cultivating future student leaders, helping students learn about Fiu’s traditions and unique culture, and supports students in their transition into the university.
registration is on a first-come, first-served basis so make sure to sign up AsAP!
What can students expect at camp?
• interact with 250 other students in large and small group setting
• network with Fiu faculty, staff, and students who are passionate about working with students
• Participate in fun activities & team builders
• Learn tips and tricks on how to navigate Fiu and be a successful, engaged student

Where is Panther Camp?
Panther Camp takes place at Lake Placid Camp and Conference
Center in Lake Placid, FL. their air-conditioned facilities provide the perfect location for our program.
Fast Facts About Panther Camp
• 100 percent of students who attended Panther Camp got involved in at least one club or activity at Fiu!
• Many of the Peer advisor Staff attended Panther Camp
• the 2010-2011 Sga President is a past Panther Camp participant, facilitator and executive board member
• Many Sorority and Fraternity members at Fiu went to Panther Camp
• Panther Camp participants hold leadership positions in the university’s largest organizations, councils, and leadership societies.
• Panther Camp has won the Student Life award for Outstanding Student Organization Spirit in 2008, 2009 & 2011!
The cost for Panther Camp 2013 is $80.00 and includes:
• transportation – a coach bus brings students to and from camp
• Lodging – all bunk-style sleeping quarters are air conditioned, carpeted, and having running water
• Meals – three meals a day are served buffet style and are all-you-can-eat
• t-shirts & gifts – leave camp with exclusive Fiu gear
• a four-year Student alumni Membership for freshmen participants and a two-year membership for transfer participants when you register for camp.
• additionally, there is an annual Panther Camp reunion that is free to campers.

individually in exploring academic options, selecting courses,
setting goals, and preparing academically for the semester.
the Beacon the student-run newspaper, distributed three times each

BBC acronym for the Biscayne Bay Campus – often
called the north Campus - and located at 3000
n.E. 151st Street north Miami, Florida 33181.
Bright Futures Florida state scholarships given to Florida
residents who qualify for the award.
Broward Pines
Center
One of the four Fiu campuses located in Broward.the
the Cage the nickname for the football stadium.
Campus Life Campus Life houses much of the information about how
students can get involved in a variety of extracurricular activities
and organizations, designed to enhance a student’s college
experience. Campus Life provides a wide array of services
and features of interest, including academics, athletics,
Entertainment, Student Services, and Clubs & Organizations.
CLEP acronym for the College-Level Examination Program® - provides
students of any age with the opportunity to demonstrate college-
level achievement through a program of exams in undergraduate
college courses. Students may choose to take exams in a variety of
subjects through CLEP that would satisfy academic requirements
in a number of classes. there are 2,900 colleges, including Fiu,
that grant credit and/or advanced standing for CLEP exams. More

Freshmen Convocation is the traditional official welcoming ceremony
of freshmen to the university Community by the President, Provost
and faculty and staff. it is designed as an opportunity to convey to
students the significance of their educational endeavor and the
commitment of the university to support them in the achievement of
this goal - within the classroom and without! it is also a celebration of
university life and the traditions of Florida international university.
ga acronym for graduate assistant - is a graduate student at Fiu
who is working part-time as a professional staff member in a
variety of campus offices as a part of their academic program.
gC acronym for the graham Center – the hub of student life
and activity, located at the Modesto Maidique Campus.
golden Panther
Pledge of honor
the Fiu athletics fan code of conduct, created by the Office of Student
Conduct and Conflict resolution to encourage students to promote
good sportsmanship by student-athletes, coaches and spectators.
grade Point
average (gPa)
a grading system used to determine a student’s status, based
on the grades the students receive in individual courses and
calculated with the number of college credits for each individual
course. Each letter grade a student can receive is given a preset
number of quality points, which are multiplied by the number of
credits in each individual course. all of these points are added
together and divided by the number of total credits a student has
accumulated during a student’s academic progress throughout
their time of study, giving them their Cumulative (overall) gPa.
greenride Florida international university’s web-based carpool program,
designed to link students, faculty, and staff members with others
who might be interested in carpooling to and from campus. Fiu’s
greenride Carpool Program is a part of Fiu’s go green initiatives.
it also benefits members of the Fiu community by providing close
proximity parking for carpoolers. in order to use this privileged
parking, a greenride decal must be obtained and properly displayed.

iSSS acronym for international Student and Scholar Services. the
office is located in gC 355, they assist international students
with their needs such as insurance, financial aid, etc.
kissing Bridge the bridge by the turtle lakes at MMC. it is said that when
couples kiss on the bridge, they will stay together forever.

Campus - is the main campus of Fiu, located at

Panther Camp a three-day leadership, involvement, and traditions
camp for incoming freshman and transfer students.
Panther Parent nickname for a member of the Panther Parents association
– a dues-based organization designed to provide parents

Panther Square the open area by the bookstore in the Wolfe university

SLS Common term for SLS 1501: the First-year Experience – a one-
credit First year Experience course required for incoming freshmen.
this course serves as an extension to Orientation. “SLS 1501
introduces students to the university and promotes and supports
academic, intellectual, personal, and social growth and success.”
