Located in the heart of the beautiful Finger Lakes region of New York, known nationally for its abundant wineries, recreational activities, and spectacular vistas, Finger Lakes Casino & Racetrack has developed into a favorite stop for

local residents and thousands of tourists who visit the area annually.

Finger Lakes has seen some of the greatest jockeys and Thoroughbreds in the history of the sport grace its grounds, including Hall of Fame riders Angel Cordero, Pat Day, Julie Krone and Bill Shoemaker. On September 24, 1978, Steve Cauthen, fresh off guiding Affirmed to a Triple Crown sweep in 1978, attracted a crowd of 11,030 that wagered a single-day, on-track record of $765,580.

But arguably no appearance was more exciting than Funny Cide’s run in the $100,000 Wadsworth Memorial Handicap on July 4, 2007. The first and only Kentucky Derby winner to ever race at Finger Lakes, did so in style charging from behind and pulling away down the stretch to win, in what later turned out to be the final race of his distiguished career. Over 11,000 were on hand that day, the largest crowd in nearly 30 years.

Fio Rito, however, who stands above all others in Finger Lakes racing lore. In 1981, Fio Rito, a locally-based horse who was named New York State Horse of the Year in 1980, stepped into the national spotlight by winning the Whitney Handicap at Saratoga. Fio Rito dominated at Finger Lakes throughout his career, winning 19 of 27 starts. Upon his passing in 1996 at the age of 21, Fio Rito was buried in the Finger Lakes infield.

Since 2004, Finger Lakes has transformed itself into a multi-faceted entertainment destination. Following the addition of video gaming machines in February 2004, the property has experienced a tremendous resurgence, with nearly two million visitors enjoying gaming and racing annually. An expansion in 2013 will enhance several amenities by including more gaming space, a 102-seat restaurant and a feature bar/lounge.

Highlights from the 2012 campaign include Wilfredo Rohena capturing the riding title with 138 wins. It marked the first time since 2001 anyone other than John Davila, Jr. claimed the top jockey crown. Davila finished second with 129 wins. Chris Englehart continued his dominance of the trainer standings, winning his tenth consecutive title, and 12th overall.

Finger Lakes will host several stakes during 2013, headlined by the New York Derby in July. The Derby is the second leg of the Big Apple Triple for New York-bred 3-year-olds, which begins with the Mike Lee Handicap at Belmont Park in late June, and concludes with the Albany Handicap at Saratoga in mid-August. The New York Breeders’ Futurity is also a highlight in September. In 2008 the Futurity featured the largest purse in the history of the track ($318,525).

Finger Lakes Thoroughbred Adoption Program (FLTAP), a non-profit 501 (c) (3) organization, formed in 2004 as a collaborative effort between Finger Lakes Casino & Racetrack

and the Finger Lakes Horsemen’s Benevolent Protective Association (HBPA). Recognizing the need for a formal adoption program, both organizations joined together to create

a program where racehorses can be retrained and pursue new careers after their retirement from racing.

FLTAP is managed from the Purple Haze Center, a 10,000 square foot facility located on the grounds of Finger Lakes Casino & Racetrack, and is the first and only adoption

facility in the United States located on the grounds of a racetrack. Since its inception, over 500 horses have been placed in new homes through the efforts of both full-time

and part-time employees and volunteers who manage the facility and retrain the horses. Retired thoroughbreds are capable of becoming trail riders, event and show horses,

and many other professions after their retirement. For more information on the program, visit fingerlakestap.org. The facility is open daily, year round.

NTRA Safety and Integrity Accreditation:Full accreditation from the National Thoroughbred Racing Association (NTRA) Safety and Integrity Alliance was bestowed upon Finger Lakes

Casino & Racetrack once again in 2013. The initial accreditation was received in April 2011 after a complete review of all racing and facility operations. Finger Lakes joins nineteen other racetracks in earning the reaccreditation, joining the ranks with other prestigious tracks of note: Churchill Downs, Saratoga Race Course, Santa Anita, and Belmont Park.

As in the 2011 review, the Finger Lakes Thoroughbred Adoption Program received exceptionally high acclaim from the inspection team and is considered an industry model to be implemented at other racing facilities. Finger Lakes received re-accreditation following a lengthy

process including the completion of a 48-page written application, followed by several meetings with Alliance officials, and on-site inspections of all areas of the facility.

The mission of the Race Track Chaplaincy is to provide, with excellence, for the spiritual, emotional, physical and social/educational needs of horse racing’s vast workforce. Hall of Fame jockey Pat Day made a visit to Finger Lakes in 2009 to support the Race Track Chaplaincy of America (R.T.C.A). The four-time winner of the Eclipse Award for Outstanding Jockey made the appearance on August 15 and August 16 to celebrate 25 years of the Race Track Chaplaincy of Finger Lakes. Pat Day has been involved with the R.T.C.A. since the early 1980’s and is currently the racing industry’s representative for the organization. For more information on the Race Track Chaplaincy, contact Herb Wagner at 315-878-6362.
