CITY OF ARLINGTON

BUILD A THRIVING COMMUNITY The Arlington City Council has determined that “Building a Thriving Community” is a priority for the work of our city. Every part of our organization contributes to our overall success and vitality as we make Arlington a better place to live, work, learn and play.

APRD INITIATIVES:• Playground Improvements• Park Enhancements, including projects at the SW Nature Preserve, Burl Wilkes, Rush Creek and Richard Simpson.• Expansion of Special Events • Park and Ditto Golf Course Master Plan Development• Hugh Smith Rec Center and East Library Assessment

SUPPORT QUALITY EDUCATIONA successful community requires a variety of support systems and an environment that enables educational opportunities to flourish. Residents, students and families seeking a community to invest in desired choices and a culture of achievement. Arlington strives for quality public, private and higher education for our community. This focus will attract new residents and businesses, and prepare a foundation for our future. The synergy between educational institutions, the municipal corporation, the private sector and the community can help ensure success and achievement for all students.

APRD INITIATIVES:• Development of Internship Program• Lunch & Learn Career Development Seminars• BrandAid Marketing & Social Media Conference

City Council Priorities

Arlington’s history is complex, its identity evolving over more than 150 years. From its early beginning as a frontier outpost and an agricultural center, it has transformed into one of the top 50 most-populous cities in the country with quality neighborhoods and boasting an emerging Tier I university, major industrial entities, Major League Baseball, a world-class NFL football stadium, and amusement attractions featuring giant roller coasters and wild water slides.

While defining an identifiable brand for Arlington may be a recently stated priority, it is a process that has been evolving. From “...for the good times” of decades past to more recent taglines, the City’s brand has changed with the times. Branding as a new initiative has been gaining momentum. We have been moving forward with extensive research prepared by experts in the field of branding solutions, input from creative minds at the University of Texas at Arlington, and current efforts like logo integration.

At its core, our brand is the promise that we make to our key audiences: our residents, our visitors, and our businesses. And identifying, articulating, and communicating Arlington’s brand is critical to attracting people and investment. The goal of our branding strategy is simple: develop a brand theme, create a common corporate look, build on our brand strengths, ensure a unified message is presented internally and externally, and to do our work in a way that will support our brand on a daily basis.

For all of these reasons, the Arlington City Council has included Define an Identifiable Brand as one of four council priorities for 2013. The other three council priorities are Build a Thriving Community, Support Quality Education and Enhance Regional Mobility. Residents can expect to see progress in these council priorities over the coming months. The City of Arlington will track progress, measure achievements and highlight connections between city spending and work being done in the community through quarterly newsletters on each council priority. Below is a better look at each priority and how the City of Arlington Parks and Recreation Department is doing its part to further these efforts.

CITY OF ARLINGTON

ENHANCE REGIONAL MOBILITY“Enhancing Regional Mobility” is a priority of the Arlington City Council. Improving the efficiency and effectiveness of Arlington’s transportation connections within and beyond our borders is critical because of our central location within the region. Our community is at the crossroads. As the regional and statewide conversation to increase mobility continues, Arlington faces an important decision to determine its place in the future of this system.

APRD INITIATIVES:• Beautification of City Entry Points• Improved Trail Connections Between Parks, Schools and Neighborhoods: • Bowman Branch Linear Park Trail Expansion • Fish Creek Linear Park

DEFINE AN IDENTIFIABLE BRANDArlington is achieving a higher profile on a regional, national and international basis with world-class events taking place in the Entertainment District and as a home to an emerging Tier I research university. As our visibility increases, we want to be known for our authentic hometown charm and big city amenities. We strive to be genuine, the community of choice for our own residents and businesses and for those seeking a place to call home.

APRD INITIATIVES:• New Parks and Gateway Signage• Sculpture Trail• Website Development of NaturallyFun.org• Increase Social Media Presence• Re-Design of Naturally Funtimes

PURSUE OUR VISIONThe City of Arlington is committed to being a pre-eminent city, providing an exemplary environment in which to live, learn, work and play.

FULFILL OUR MISSIONThe City of Arlington proactively meets the needs of the public through active engagement, inclusive participation and high-quality, cost effective service delivery.

The City of Arlington Parks and Recreation Department received four awards from the Texas Recreation and Parks Society at the 2013 state conference in Lubbock, Texas.

Sue Phillips, a long-time resident of east Arlington, received the “Outstanding Service Award”. The award is given to an individual that has contributed extensive volunteer time toward providing leisure service programs, facilities, actively supported bond proposals through the local community. Phillips is a member of the Arlington Parks Board and the founder of east Arlington renewal.

The APRD received the “Planning for Excellence” award for the city-wide skate park master plan. On March 12, 2013, the APRD hosted the grand opening of the Cody Rocamontes Memorial Skatepark, located at Randol Mill Park. Arlington’s first skate park was built with funding from Cody Rocamontes Inc., a Tony Hawk Foundation grant awarded to CRI and a grant from the Arlington Tomorrow

Foundation. A city-wide facility at Vandergriff Park, as well as several small skate-lets located in linear parks, are scheduled to open in 2014.

The ReLEAF program earned the APRD the “Lone Star Recreation Programming Achievement Award” in recognition for innovative and effective recreation programming during the Arlington Tornado ReLEAF tree planting event. During the one-day event last November, the city planted 1,000 trees to replace ones that were lost during the tornadoes that ravaged southwest and west Arlington in April of 2012. Over 500 volunteers came together to assist the APRD with the effort.

The department also took home the “Park Design Exellence” award for its design of the River Legacy Parks nature playground (pictured below).

LEVEL ASSESSMENTThe City of Arlington’s Learn to Swim Program follows the American Red Cross Swim and Water Safety Program. We assess each child on the first day of class to help with accurate placement of the child in the correct level. If possible, we will move the child to a level that best suits his or her skill level. If a child is registered in the incorrect class, every effort will be made to place them into a class of an appropriate level but cannot be guaranteed.

We ask parents to help assist us with registering their child in the correct level by talking to their child’s instructor from the previous session and/or following the guidelines below.

LEARN TO SWIM AT HUGH SMITHThe Learn to Swim program offers customers of all ages the opportunity to enjoy swim lessons on weekends and weeknights. Weekend classes are offered Saturdays or Sundays over a period of 10 weeks. Weekday lessons are on Mondays and Wednesdays or Tuesdays and Thursdays and run for five weeks. Our Learn to Swim program includes parent / tot, preschool and Red Cross certified swimming classes. We also offer private lessons for all ages.

How long have you been in your position?“I have worked for Parks and Recreation since 2008 and I started with Arlington in October of last year.”

Describe a typical day in your position.“My job title is Recreation Programs Coordinator and what that entails is programming all of the different activities and classes that we have going on here that specifically deal with children and the youth. That’s from day camp to after-school care to pre-school to dance classes.”

What do you enjoy most about your job?“What I enjoy most about my job is helping the citizens of Arlington experience the different parks and leisure activities that we have to offer, from pools to trails to different fitness classes. I also really enjoy working with kids and providing an experience for them that they wouldn’t get otherwise. The best part of my day is when their parents come to pick them up and the kids don’t want to leave because they’re having so much fun. That’s when I know that I have done my job well.”

What are some upcoming can’t-miss events at Dottie Lynn?“In the fall we have a really great after-school program, where we serve Dunn, Duff and Hill elementary schools. The kids get to come here and get help with homework, eat a snack, and have some really good free time. We also have (in the fall) a family-fun campout and it’s an awesome experience for an overnight stay in Arlington. For more information, visit naturallyfun.org.”

TIERRA VERDEGOLF CLUB

It’s hard to find a more beautiful course than the award-winning Tierra Verde Golf Club. Tierra Verde is the first golf course in Texas and the first municipal course in the world to be certified as an Audubon Signature Sanctuary. Walk onto the first tee and enter an environment where golf and nature come together in harmony.

Opened in 1998, and carved from 250 acres of secluded terrain, the course’s unsurpassed layout encompasses a variety of natural settings and offers an outstanding playing experience on every hole. The course has been host to many prestigious events, including the Byron Nelson Qualifying Tournament on multiple occasions.

Tierra Verde was named the top golf course in the DFW Metroplex in 2012 by Avid Golfer magazine.*

Each hole has five sets of tees, sculpted fairways, strategically placed sand bunkers and water hazards - all accented by stately trees and beautiful native grasses.

The facility features a state-of-the-art golf learning center, a lighted driving range, three-hole practice course and large chipping and putting green complex. Also offered are lessons and clinics taught by PGA/LPGA professionals and apprentices, an outdoor pavilion and full-service restaurant, Ventana Grille, that complement every event from small corporate outings to large fundraising tournaments.

CHESTER DITTO GOLF COURSE

Named after life-long resident of Arlington Chester W. Ditto, Ditto Golf Course is located in north Arlington, just 15 minutes from the DFW airport and near the heart of Arlington’s Entertainment District, featuring the Texas Rangers, Dallas Cowboys and Six Flags.

As a long-standing favorite among golfers in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, Chester Ditto is 18-holes of challenging golf blending plush fairways narrowed by trees and accented with strategically placed sand bunkers and landing areas.

A driving range, practice putting green and chipping area are offered to complete one’s golfing experience.

The clubhouse offers snack bar concessions and a full line pro shop with today’s most popular equipment and apparel. Chester Ditto also offers tournaments and private and group lessons taught by PGA Professionals and Apprentices.

Chester Ditto was named one of Avid Golfer’s Top 40 DFW public courses in 2012, as the publication noted that “course reputation is on a big upswing.”

LAKE ARLINGTONGOLF COURSE

Lake Arlington Golf Course is a beautiful 18-hole facility nestled on 185 acres on the north shore of Lake Arlington. The course was designed with all types of players in mind and with the newly renovated fairways and greens, the course provides a great golfing experience at an exceptional value.

Lake Arlington’s time-honored design blends open and tree-lined fairways, long challenging par 3’s and scenic greens to appeal to every level of player. A challenge for the professional as well as the beginner, the four sets of tees, ranging from 5,485 yards to 6,637, provides a fair playing field that appeals to every level of proficiency.

The clubhouse features a well stocked pro shop and grill. Lake Arlington’s combination of enjoyable golf, convenient location and professional staff create the perfect setting for group outings and tournaments.

PGA Head Professional Michael Berneburg and his staff offer golf lessons for all ages and ability levels. Call 817-451-6101 for rates and availability.

The course offers challenging golf along with a practice putting green and chipping area at an exceptional value.

Avid Golfer ranked Lake Arlington in its list of the top-60 courses in DFW last year, specifically mentioning that the “lack of homes on the course makes you feel far away from the Metroplex.”

MEADOWBROOK PARK GOLF COURSE

Arlington’s tradition of outstanding golf began in the 1920’s with Meadowbrook Park. Conveniently located just east of downtown Arlington, the golf course provides an excellent choice for families and leagues.

Meadowbrook Park is the perfect facility to learn the game of golf and sharpen short-game skills. The 9-Hole, par-33 layout consists of six par 4s, 250 to 300 yards in length, and three par 3s, approximately 150 yards in length. Due to its shorter length, Meadowbrook is easily played when under time constraints.

Its small greens and narrow fairways are designed to challenge every level of player and is fun for the whole family.

The clubhouse offers a full line pro shop, concessions, and golf cart rentals.

Exclusive facility rental opportunities are available for both golf and non-golf outdoor activities.

With a long-standing commitment to environmental enhancement and preservation, Meadowbrook Park Golf Course is like a walk in the park for the whole family!

TIPS FROM THE PROS AARON BONVILLION Assistant Professional Chester Ditto Golf Course

What is the one golf tip you would tell aspiring players?Practice at least as much as you play and spend at least as much time on the putting green as you do on the driving range.

What’s the best golf advice you ever received?Golf should always be an enjoyable experience. A bad day on the golf course is still better than a good day at work.

Key to better ball striking?Commitment to practice.

Name a golfer that you try to emulate (either swing or a part of their game)?Fred Couples’ tempo.

Tip that you learned during junior instruction that you still use to this day.For putting and chipping: however far you take the club back, make sure it goes through twice as far.

How can the average golfer take 2-3 shots off of their score?Practice around the greens (chipping and putting).

Favorite thing about working at Chester Ditto?Engaging with people and watching new golfers get the golf bug!

Favorite hole at one of our Arlington Golf Courses? No. 6 at Ditto...a great par-3.

What’s your career low round?65 at Idylwild Golf Club in Sour Lake, Texas. My home course.

Any Hole-in-One’s?One. Came on the 184-yard fourth hole in the final round of the ‘05 Bruce Lietzke Junior Classic at Idylwild.

Favorite club in the bag?Cleveland 797 BeNi 60 degree

Best advice for a parent with a kid interested in golf?ALWAYS keep it fun!

Since 2005, the Lie family has been enjoying the sport of tennis in Arlington. Like many families, the kids participated in soccer, baseball and gymnastics. After being handed a racquet, Adrian, Harrison and Quentin found a passion in chasing a little yellow ball. The first formative years, the boys concentrated in learning the basics of tennis.

Under the guidance of their coach, Lisa Osborn, they learned to finesse their tennis

skills to progress and allow them to play on the Martin High School tennis team.”

JOB LIE

All three boys have played with the Arlington Tennis Center’s Junior Team Tennis for four years. During these years, they have met and made many friendships with tennis players their own age.

Not only have the boys enjoyed playing, but also have found satisfaction in giving back. They have volunteered their time assisting in local tournaments and helped their school holding team practices.

The boys continue to seek to improve themselves and compete in ZAT and CMZ tournaments. Tennis has been a great driver in the family as the sport has allowed the boys to make new friends from all over Texas. CUSTOMER SPOTLIGHT:

The Senior Recreation Center at Eunice located at 1000 Eunice street in the City of Arlington has a new name; “The Eunice Activity Center”. In April 2013 the Arlington City Council unanimously approved a resolution to rename the center. The intent of this subtle change is to increase the appeal and usage of the facility by mature adults.

The name change provides one of many opportunities to attract a larger audience from the baby boomer generation and improve program participation. The renaming of the center will have no impact on the many services and loyal customers that currently enjoy the facility.

The Eunice Activity Center is one of two senior adult facilities managed by the Parks and Recreation Department in the Park Performance Fund. As Performance Fund facilities, the senior centers have a charge of recovering operating costs, to the extent possible, through creative programming, special events and rentals during non-public hours. Staff views the name change as an opportunity to subtly rebrand the building and explore programming options that help retain and attract new customers that may shun the traditional label of senior services.

With the name change comes an opportunity to provide more inclusive programming. Mature active adults currently enjoy day trips, destination travel, fitness programs, volunteer opportunities, music classes, art classes, computer classes, Yoga, Pilates, special health programs and other special events and activities.

The Eunice Activity Center will focus on expanding the opportunities for fun exciting activities that will meet the needs of the evolving mature adult population in Arlington. Come out and join the Naturally Funtimes!

EUNICE ACTIVITY CENTERNew name brings new focus

Chair Yoga is a unique yoga style that adapts yoga positions and poses to the use of a chair. The student performs yoga poses with more support and stability. Poses are done seated on the chair or the chair is used for support during standing poses. It is designed to maintain, stretch, strengthen and increase flexibility of your body.

Chair Yoga is suitable for all ages, fitness levels and physical conditions. This class is also perfect for anyone going through rehabilitation for injuries or other medical conditions.

Certified instructor, Robin Capp, will lead the students in several different types of Yoga postures, breathing techniques, meditation and ways of relaxation. Robin Capps has been a fitness instructor for the City of Arlington for 8 years. Robin’s exercise specialties are Chair Yoga, Yoga, Pilates, Boot Camp and Senior Group Exercise. Many of her students say the classes that she teaches at the senior centers are filled with fun and excitement.

Robin says “I love my job. I teach seniors to exercise and strengthen their muscles so they can live a long and healthy life”.

Classes began on June 11 and will be conducted at The Eunice Activity Center on Tuesdays and Thursday from 8:45am – 9:30am. The fee is $20.00 per month; join us for your first day of class at no charge. Come out and try it. We are certain that you will like it.

CHAIR YOGANew program coming to the EAC

Before retiring 15 years ago, Helen had worked at the same company in Arlington for 35 years. Although she was introduced to computers before her retirement, she had not used computers since.

As Helen explained to us, she had “no interest in games and nonsense.” Despite this lack of enthusiasm, Helen showed up for the first computer class in the computer lab at the Hugh Smith Recreation Center. She was at the center to socialize with friends and decided to drop by the class to find out how hard it would be to get started with email. During that first class, Helen worked to overcome a tremor that made using the mouse a challenge.

Three weeks later, her mousing skills have improved, and she has realized the benefits of getting online. Helen has already connected with family and friends online via email and Facebook!

Helen is one of the many seniors starting their digital retirement at the Hugh Smith Recreation Center computer

lab. There are eight public access computers available to anyone who has a facility card and a library card with a pin number. Daily guest passes are also available. The lab is the result of a partnership between Arlington Public Library, the Hugh Smith Recreation Center and the Senior Center New York. The partnership saw potential at the site shared by the recreation and senior centers that a public computer center could bring technology training to seniors unlikely to make it into the library.

The site’s location on the East side of Arlington and its proximity to three title I schools were also ideal for a public computer center.

The lab is open for public access Monday through Friday from 8:30 AM to 6 PM and private computer classes for seniors are offered. Seniors typically visit in the morning, and teens and adults in the afternoons and evenings. Visit the front desk at the Senior Center New York or give us a call at 817-460-5009 to sign up for private instruction.

PARK UPDATES

BURL WILKES PARK2000 Reever St., 76010

The renovation of Burl Wilkes Neighborhood Park involves the redevelopment of an existing 3 acre neighborhood park in east Arlington. Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funding was authorized for this project in 2011 and has been matched with Park Development Fees.

New amenities include a small pavilion, small skate spot, an expanded concrete loop trail, new picnic stations with tables and grills, new benches, drinking fountain and a park monument sign.

Renovations started in April and are scheduled to be complete in August 2013. Pedestrian trail lighting is also planned and is scheduled to start in August and be completed by October 2013.

BOWMAN BRANCH LINEAR PARKSouth Matlock Road

Located in southeast Arlington, this linear trail will run westward from Tin Cup Road approximately two miles over to Webb Community Park.

Running through the 153-acre park will be a 2.2 mi hike and bike trail to be finished in December of 2013.

Traffic lights will be installed where the trail crosses Matlock and Mansfield-Webb Roads. The trail will run to and through Don Misenhimer Park and provide a connection to Webb Community Park.

A bridge will provide safe crossing of Bowman Branch Creek and there will be several benches and picnic tables installed at various locations along the trail.

PIRIE PARK1016 West Cedar St., 76012

New site amenities and renovations are under construction at Pirie Park, a two-acre neighborhood park in north Arlington. The improvements include a new 6-foot-wide concrete trail loop with wheelchair access from the street, new playground equipment, new fitness equipment stations, additional seating, and improved drainage across the site.

The new trail, which will loop along the park perimeter, will be roughly 1/5 mile long. New fitness equipment is located along the trail and includes a recumbent bike station, “air-walker” station, rowing station, and arm and abs station. The playground equipment has been updated to provide playing opportunities for both the 2-5 and 5-12 age groups.

Construction began in May 2013 and should be completed by August.

67FALL 2013 • NATURALLY FUNTIMES MAGAZINE

Phase I Development of the Southwest Nature Preserve involves construction of a new lighted parking lot with 35 spaces and a controlled access entry gate. A new concrete walkway runs from the parking lot to the lower pond. The walkway leads to a pond side boardwalk that features a fishing pier and built-in benches. A terraced outdoor seating/education area is located off the new walkway and over-looks the west end of the lower pond. New picnic tables are also included in an area adjacent to the new walkway. The Nature Preserve has approximately one mile of non-accessible existing soft surface trails that circle the property and provide able-bodied hikers a way to access the large pond and the bluff on the west side of the Preserve.

The Southwest Nature Preserve is a 58-acre tract of undeveloped land located just south of Interstate 20 and adjacent to Bowman Springs Rd., in southwest Arlington. The Preserve has one large and two smaller ponds, is home to several significant native plant communities, and has a high bluff located on sandstone outcroppings with dramatic views.

In January 2010, the City of Arlington issued a Request for Proposals from professional consulting firms qualified to develop a master plan and phase one construction documents. Nineteen submittals were received from firms statewide during the process. The Parks and Recreation Department assembled a selection committee composed of departmental staff and selected Advisory Committee members. The selection committee reviewed the submittals and developed a short list of five firms, all of which were interviewed. The committee selected Halff Associates, Inc., of Dallas, Texas. Staff negotiated the scope of work and a project schedule, and a consultant contract was authorized by the City Council on May 4, 2010.

The Southwest Nature Preserve Master Plan was developed through input from an Advisory Committee that includes citizen representatives from the neighborhood surrounding the Preserve, multiple City departments, former Park Board members, several key organizations in the City of Arlington, and APRD staff. Multiple committee meetings occurred during the planning process with members providing input on project goals, visions, the draft plan, and phase one development priorities. Citizen input regarding the master

plan and phase one development was also gathered at two open public meetings.

The primary goal of this comprehensive master plan is to guide the development of a quality facility with a focus on passive recreational and educational opportunities while also encouraging the preservation of the natural conditions of the site. This plan establishes long-term objectives for enabling public access to environmentally sensitive facilities within the Preserve and for the restoration and maintenance of the site’s ecosystem and various habitats.

One of the key components of the master plan document is an outline of specific recommendations for the implementation of restoration techniques, environmentally sustainable maintenance methods, and the removal of invasive plant species. Many of the existing trails within the Preserve are suffering from the effects of erosion and will require extensive restoration work. The Preserve also has a meadow area that is home to the native Glen Rose Yucca. Proper maintenance techniques will ensure the long-term survival of the meadow and the yucca plants. To guide the removal of invasive non-native plant species an informational booklet has been developed with color photographs and descriptions of both beneficial native plants and unwanted non-native plants. The booklet will be distributed to maintenance staff and volunteers to ensure proper plant identification.

Important highlights of the master plan include three lighted parking lots, a pavilion and other outdoor education gathering areas, a pond-side board walk, and improvements to the existing soft-surface trails with benches and interpretive signage located along those trails. Ecologically sustainable design and management methods will be employed to the greatest extent possible within the Preserve.”

“Keep Arlington Beautiful and the City of Arlington are working together to help reduce litter. This new program will allow the community to pitch-in and make a difference,” said Jennifer Chadwell. “Now neighborhoods, Scout Troops and social organizations can plan volunteer events and we are ready to provide support.”
