Project Description:

Meadow wildflowers provide valuable natural habitat for a variety of wildlife and are an essential part of maintaining healthy biodiversity. They attract a group of important wildlife recognized as pollinator species including bees, hummingbirds, butterflies, moths, beetles, birds and other insects. Canada is home to over 1,000 pollinators working constantly to move pollen from flower to flower allowing reproduction of the plant to take place and providing us with fruits and vegetables.

Pollinator numbers are declining globally due to habitat loss and disease. Through this project, TRCA is creating habitat areas by restoring existing meadow plots and creating new areas in the Heart Lake Bowl and alongside the Medicine Wheel Garden. Along with planting a wide variety native wildflowers which will bloom throughout the season, solitary bee nursery structures and bird nesting structures have been strategically installed throughout the plots.

TRCA staff work with Peel Region staff, City of Brampton staff, Peel Children Water Festival, community groups, students, businesses and local residents to engage them in pollinator planting, garden maintenance and nesting box activities to ensure these areas are not threatened by invasive vegetation and continue to thrive.
