2013 Election Results For Officers and Members of the Council of the Boston Bar Association PRESIDENT ׀Paul T. Dacier Automatic Accession into Office Paul is the Executive Vice President and General Counsel of EMC Corporation. He is responsible for EMC’s worldwide legal group which consists of more than 100 attorneys. Paul is currently the BBA President-Elect. Paul is also a member of the BBA’s Executive Committee. Under Governor Mitt Romney, Paul was a commissioner of the Massachusetts Judicial Nominating Commission. Paul was instrumental in establishing the Business Litigation Session in Suffolk County and is a member and past chair on the board of the New England Legal Foundation. He is a Trustee of the Boston Bar Foundation and the Social Law Library. Paul is a graduate of Marquette University and Marquette University Law School. Her practice includes litigation, counseling and strategy in the areas of trademarks, copyrights, patents, Internet commerce, domain name piracy, false advertising, and unfair competition. At the BBA, Julia is currently Vice President and a member of the Executive Committee. She is a Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers and immediate past Chair of the ACTL Massachusetts State Committee. She currently holds a three year appointment as the First Circuit Representative to the ABA Standing Committee on the Federal Judiciary. Lisa served as a Member of the Litigation Curriculum Advisory Committee for Massachusetts Continuing Legal Education. She is also a member of the Board of Bar Overseers. At the BBA, Lisa is a member of the Council and the Executive Committee. She previously served as Co-Chair of the BBA’s Tort Committee. Lisa is a graduate of Brown University and Harvard Law School. Carol is the current Chair of the Joint Bar Committee on Judicial Appointments. She has also served as the BBA’s Secretary, a member of the Council and of the Executive Committee, the Co-Chair of the Diversity & Inclusion Group Mentoring Program, and as the Co-Chair of the BBA’s Criminal Law Section Steering Committee. Carol is also the Vice Chair for the White Collar Defense & Investigations Committee for the International Association of Defense Counsel. For a decade, Mike was a federal prosecutor in Boston, where served as Chief of the Anti-Terrorism and National Security Unit, Coordinator of the Anti-Terrorism Advisory Council and Deputy Chief of the Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Force. He was also a Trial Attorney in the Civil Rights Division. Mike is a contributing author of the ABA’s Securities Enforcement Manual and teaches Constitutional Law and Criminal Procedure at Suffolk University Law School. Jeffrey J. Pyle Appointed to Three-Year TermJeff is a partner at Prince Lobel Tye LLP, where he focuses on commercial, First Amendment, criminal defense, and media litigation matters. He has represented media organizations and individuals in a range of matters involving constitutional rights, including defamation cases, disputes over subpoenas to the press, and proceedings for access to sealed court documents. Jeff also serves on the firm’s pro bono committee. At the BBA, Jeff is the Chair of the Amicus Committee. He previously served as Co-Chair of the Civil Rights and Civil Liberties Section, and on several ad-hoc committees and working groups. Jeff is the Treasurer of the Petra Foundation and serves on the Boards of Directors of the American Civil Liberties Union of Massachusetts and Massachusetts Citizens Against the Death Penalty, Inc.

Jeff is a graduate of Trinity College and Boston College Law School.

COUNCIL MEMBERS Paul G. Cushing Elected to Three-Year TermPaul is the head of the Litigation and Compliance Section in the Office of General Counsel at Partners HealthCare. He is also the Secretary and coordinates legal services for the Spaulding Rehabilitation Network and Partners HealthCare at Home. Paul served as Co-Chair of the BBA’s 2012 Annual Meeting Steering Committee. Paul serves on the BBA Ethics Committee, which he Co-Chaired for three years. He also has served on the BBA Nominating Committee, the Steering Committees for the BBF Adams Benefit, the Summer Jobs Program, and the Law Day Dinner. He is a member of the BBF Society of Fellows and serves on the Society of Fellow Committee. Paul is on the board and is a past president of the Northeast Chapter of the Association of Corporate Counsel and is a founder and past chair of the chapter’s Ethics Committee and its Diversity Committee. He is a frequent panelist for in-house counsel events and has taught as an adjunct professor at New England Law | Boston.

Paul is a graduate of the Carroll School of Management at Boston College and Boston College Law School. He is also a graduate of the General Electric Company Financial Management Program.

Deborah J. Manus Elected to Three-Year TermDeb is Co-Managing Partner of Nutter McClennen & Fish LLP, a member of the firm’s Executive Committee, and former chair of the Trusts & Estates Department. She represents high net worth individuals and families on estate and trust administration and estate planning, helping to structure large, tax-efficient gifts, and implementing other planning techniques to reduce transfer taxes. Deb serves as trustee of a significant number of private trusts and is also a principal of Nutter Investment Advisors, LLC. At the BBA, Deb is a member of the Trusts and Estates Steering Committee and serves as one of two representatives on the ad hoc committee formed by the BBA, the Massachusetts Bar Association, and the Women’s Bar Association to recommend proposed revisions to the Commonwealth’s elective share legislation. She is a member of the BBF Society of Fellows and serves on the Society of Fellows Committee. Deb served on the Steering Committees of the 2012 and 2013 Annual Law Day Dinners and Co-Chaired the 2012 Annual Meeting Steering Committee.Deb is a graduate of Bates College and Cornell Law School.

Christopher M. Morrison Elected to Three-Year TermChris is a partner at Jones Day where he practices in business and intellectual property litigation. He is the Boston office’s hiring partner and served for two years as its Pro Bono Coordinator. An alumnus of the BBA’s Public Interest Leadership Program, Chris is Co-Chair of the Litigation Section. He served as Co-Chair of the BBA’s Business Litigation and Antitrust Committee, and as a member of the BBA’s Strategic Planning, the Strategic Communications, and Website Committees. Chris also Co-Chaired the BBA Law Day Dinner Steering Committee and served as a member of the BBF Adams Benefit Steering Committee. In 2009, Chris organized a BBA program for lawyers facing layoffs, and continues to speak regularly to groups of lawyers encountering difficulty in the legal market. He serves on the SJC’s Mental Health Legal Advisors Committee, the Massachusetts Appleseed Board, and the Medfield School Committee.

Chris obtained his B.A., M.Ed., and J.D. from Boston College.

Mark D. Roellig Appointed to Three-Year TermMark is the Executive Vice President and General Counsel of Massachusetts Mutual Life Insurance Company and is responsible for all legal affairs of the company. He is also responsible for the corporate secretary, corporate compliance, internal audit, government relations, and the corporate administration and real estate/facilities departments of MassMutual. Prior to joining MassMutual in 2005, Mark was general counsel and secretary to three public companies before their sales/mergers: Fisher Scientific International Inc., Storage Technology Corporation, and US WEST Inc. Mark received the ACC Excellence in Corporate Practice Award (2012), is Co-Chair of the PLI Corporate Counsel Institute, is on the board of the Lawyers Collaborative for Diversity (President) and the Institute for Inclusion in the Legal Profession, and is an adjunct professor at the University of Colorado Law School.

Mark is a graduate of University of Michigan and George Washington University Law School. He earned his M.B.A. at the University of Washington.

Sara J. Shanahan Elected to Three-Year TermSara is a partner at Sherin and Lodgen LLP, where she focuses on complex business litigation and insurance coverage disputes. Sara is Vice-Chair of the firm’s Litigation Department and is Co-Chair of the Business Litigation and Social Media and Digital Technology Practice Groups. Currently, Sara is Co-Chair of the BBA’s Administration of Justice Section. She is a member of the Board of Directors of the Massachusetts Appleseed Center for Law and Justice, a member of the Boston Bar Foundation’s Society of Fellows, and a member of the Massachusetts Advisory Council for the New England Legal Foundation. Before entering private practice, Sara served as a law clerk to the Honorable Nathaniel M. Gorton of the United States District Court for the District of Massachusetts.

Wendell C. Taylor Elected to Three-Year TermWendell is a partner at Wilmer Cutler Pickering Hale and Dorr LLP, where his practice focuses on domestic and international corporate transactions, including mergers and acquisitions, venture capital financings, initial public offerings, and continuing public company reporting requirements. He works with a variety of national and international public companies, represents issuers and leading underwriters in numerous public and private offerings and has represented both buyers and sellers in merger and acquisition transactions. Wendell has served as Co-Chair of the BBA Beacon Award for Diversity & Inclusion and as Co-Chair of the International Transactions Committee. Wendell is a lecturer at the Boston University School of Law where he teaches “Negotiated Mergers & Acquisitions.” Wendell also has an active pro bono practice, which includes providing legal services to the firm’s non profit partners in the Youth and Education Initiative.

Wendell is a graduate of the College of William and Mary and Boston University School of Law.

Laura M. Unflat Elected to Three-Year TermLaura is a sole practitioner in Wellesley, concentrating her practice in all matters of family law. A portion of her practice is dedicated to representing clients with modest incomes and assets. A second-career attorney, Laura previously worked as a human resources professional. Laura is a past Co-Chair of the BBA’s New Lawyers Section and, more recently, of the Solo & Small Firm Section. She presently serves as the Family Law Section’s liaison to the Solo & Small Firm Section and also is active in the Women’s Bar Association, where she Co-Chairs the Employment Issues Committee. Laura mentors newer lawyers and law students through the BBA, the Women’s Bar Foundation, Senior Partners for Justice, and Suffolk Law School, and is active in the Newton community.

Laura is a graduate of the Harvard Extension School and Suffolk University Law School.

Rachael Rollins Elected to Three-Year TermRachael is the General Counsel of the Massachusetts Department of Transportation and the MBTA. She is the first female General Counsel in the history of the MBTA and the first person to ever serve jointly as General Counsel for both entities. She is a former Assistant United States Attorney for the District of Massachusetts. As an AUSA, Rachael prosecuted both civil and criminal cases, defended the United States and its agencies in a wide array of civil suits, brought actions to recover damages against those who committed fraud against the government, and prosecuted federal criminal firearm and drug offenses. Prior to joining the USAO, Rachael was an associate at Bingham McCutchen LLP and Seyfarth Shaw LLP. Rachael is a former Co-Chair of the BBA Mentoring Program, a BBA mentor and current member of the Diversity & Inclusion Section Steering Committee. She is the immediate past President of the Massachusetts Black Lawyers Association.

Rachael is a graduate of the University of Massachusetts at Amherst and Northeastern University School of Law. She earned her LL.M. from Georgetown University Law Center.
