Greetings and Welcome to the 50th Annual Eden Corn Festival
It is with great pride and pleasure that I serve as the current President of the Eden Corn Festival. I am also very proud to say that I have attended every Corn Festival since its inception, although difficult to remember each and every one of them as I was very young when it all started. (If you don’t believe me ask my mother.)
The Corn Festival is a very vital part of the Eden community by having a positive economic impact to many area businesses as well as assisting numerous not for profit organizations in the town as a major means of fund raising which keep their groups functioning financially. And don’t forget about the tourism boost, wherever you go and tell people you are from Eden, the first thing they mention is “Oh that’s where the
Corn Festival is”. Over the years the Corn Festival has faced some difficult situations: Wind, Rain, Extreme Heat, Cold, Water Spouts, just to mention a few, but the Corn Festival always went on and came back stronger the next year. The Corn Festival takes a strong and dedicated team to put on such a great event every year. I must say that I have had the pleasure of working with 11 outstanding board of director members as well as a committee of over 30 people that make all the events come together every year. All of these people are volun-teers and spend countless hours of their own time planning out all the events that go on during the Corn Festival. Without the dedication of these people we would not have such an outstanding event year after year. I would be remiss if I did not mention the support we receive from our sponsors. We have many sponsors not only from Eden but from all over the Southtowns that have been with us for many years, without the financial support we receive from these businesses and organizations we would not be able to put on such an affordable, clean, entertaining and family friendly event for the people that visit the Eden Corn Festival, so please read our program book and be sure to support these fine sponsors. Last but not least I would like to thank all the loyal patrons of the Eden Corn Festival, without your support over the past 50 years The Eden Corn Festival would not be here today. Thank You Again and let’s hope we will celebrate many more milestones at the Eden Corn Festival. Sincerely, Jeff Winter President, Eden Corn Festival
EDEN CORN FESTIVALEDEN CORN FESTIVALON YOUR 50th YEAR!
From all of us at the EDEN-NORTH COLLINS PENNYSAVER!
WE’LL SEE YOU NEXT YEAR AT THE 51st Eden Corn Festival: July 31st, Aug. 1-2-3, 2014
Dear Eden Community, Over the past 50 years the Eden Corn Festival has left many of us with a wealth of treasured memories. Our community organizations have grown to depend on the Corn Festival as a large part of their fund raising. The efforts of the volunteers make this possible. When you volunteer, you become a part of our memories and without helpers, the Corn Festival would not exist. In the future, please look to volunteer with local organizations such as the Eden Chamber Chicken Barbecue, the Eden United Methodist Rib Stand or the Fireman’s Corn & Curly Fries Tent. Thank you volunteers! Also, thank you to those who have participated in the many enjoyed events over the years including the queen pageant, auto show, pet show, corn eating contest, corn king, tug of war, baseball, softball and the famous parade. We hope you enjoy this 50th Anniversary Festival with family, neighbors and good friends. Sincerely, Eden- North Collins Pennysaver

The Eden Corn Festival Pet Show celebrates 50 years of peo-ple showing off their pets! From the very first fes-tival held in 1964, the Pet Show has been a favorite for many. The first Pet Show judges were Mrs.Lindsey and Mrs. Richardson.
Prizes for winners were ribbons and free tickets to rides and every child who entered a pet received a prize. Some winners of the first pet show included John Wolf, Leslie Van Vechten, and Debbie Richter for the hand-somest dog; David Eckhardt for the best groomed long-haired cat; Dennis Weidner for best groomed short-haired cat; Michele Traylor, Susan Spencer and Richard Sendor
for best costumed dog; Craig Palmerton for blackest cat and Kathy Eckhardt and Tom Guenther for best costumed cat.
The show, which will be held on Thursday August 1, 2013 at 6:00pm, is a staple for the festival. While many people bring
traditional household pets, such as cats and dogs, the show has also seen its fair share of the unusual during its long history including goats, horses, chick-ens, snakes and even a pot-bellied pig. The annual pet show is such a popular and long- run-ning event because it’s fun and it gives pet lov-ers a chance to show off their companions. Bring your favorite animal friend and join the fun!

Important Dates, Events and People Remembered by Jack Smith:
1959 Garden Festival1962 Eden Sesquicentennial1963 Brothers of the Brush wanted to con-tinue a celebration but could not put it to-gether. They appealed to the Eden Cham-ber of Commerce and it was agreed they plan a festival and it would be called the Corn Festival to highlight Eden Farmers largest crop.1964 1st Festival sponsored by the Eden chamber on August 15 & 16. Perfect weather and good committees headed by Chairman George Gunther (The Eden Supervisor) made for a successful event. Using the Eden American Legion & Eden Central School grounds proved a winning
location. Ball games on the new legion Field, a Parade down Main street, a pet show and a Beauty Pageant on the school lawn all proved very popular and are still major program events. The Chamber Barbecue Chicken, The Firemen with Corn The Legion with Beer have been continuous Conces-sions for the Festival.1967 Wally Bryan Airstream caravan Club1973 Bill Edwards took chairmanship1973 1st Program Book, Chairman Peter Schwert. Eden Jaycees brought in former Miss America Laurie Lee Schafer, Parade prizes increased, Fire-works were introduced.1974 Festival was extended to 4 days.1975 Program Chairman J. Smith booked Buffalo Philharmonic Concert on the Ball field.1976 Chairman Edwards encouraged A Betty Hill and Walt Majewski to have festival sponsored Lend a helping day. It has continued since under loving guidance of A. Betty and her helpers and is now called Super Day for Special kids.1976 Buffalo Breski’s professional women’s softball showed how WNY loved softball.1977 Jack M. Smith became softball chairmen and for the next 30 years it became the longest running fast pitch softball tournament in WNY. For his leadership Jack was inducted into the WNY Hall of Fame.1980 The Festival became a project that involved most of the organizations in Eden. The Eden Chamber of Commerce relinquished control to the newly formed Eden Corn Festival Inc.1982 Howard Ralyea became chairman through 1992. He used his skill in computerizing, mapping and streamlining the event.1993 William Faircloth took over as chairman. The age of sponsorship had arrived. Bill and his committees worked to bring in sponsors.2008 Jeff Winter took over as president. Jeff has staffed his committees with workers that are providing bigger and better Festivals.2013 Festival Celebrates 50 Years.

When the Eden Corn Festival began in 1964, so did the Queen Pag-eant. The pageant was run by Eden supervisor George Guenther, chair-man Paul Laing and Bob Maier. In the first pag-eant, 20 local girls were judged on poise, person-ality, beauty and charm. All contestants were honored at a banquet, prior to the big event. The pageant was held
on the lawn at the Eden Middle School. The first Eden Corn Festival Queen was Miss Anne M. Heckman sponsored by Jack Smith. At a reception held in her honor at the Legion Hall, she received a trophy, one dozen roses, a sash and her crown. Each year since, the Festival has crowned “Miss Eden Sweet Corn.” Other early pageant winners include Phyllis Lebo 1965, Jane Agle 1966, Audrey Hoffman 1967, and Mary Barrett 1968. The pageant celebrated its silver anniversary in 1988 by crown-ing Miss Kathleen K. Muck, as pictured. This year marks the golden anniversary for both the Corn Festival and Queen Pageant. Many eyes will be looking to see who will be honored as “Junior Miss” and who will take the “Miss Eden Corn Festival” crown. Join the fun on Saturday, August 3rd, 7:30pm at the Corn Festival Stage.

One of the most popular parades in Western New York is the Eden Corn Festival Parade. Featuring marching units, consisting of multiple Bands, highly decorated Color Guards, polished Fire, Police & Emergency Departments, and beautifully deco-rated floats. The Eden Corn Festival
Parade also showcases the newly crowned Corn Festival Queen, and her contestants as well as the Corn King winners!
The parade will travel along Route 62 Sunday, August 4th, with a 12 noon start. It is right in the heart of the Eden Community and is viewed by thousands of people lining both sides of the street. Many residents use the parade as a chance to have annual family, and neighborhood gatherings during the Eden Corn Festival Parade. The parade has been enjoyed since the festival began 50 years ago. It continues to delight and entertain all who come to watch.

Eden Valley is the oldest Food Hub in New York State & services all of the local retailers & wholesalers in the Western New York area. Product is also shipped as far as New York City, New Jersey, Florida, & Texas during the peak of the season. In 1956, the membership consisted of twenty-three (23) mem-ber farms. Through attrition, they now number ten (10) member families farm-ing the same amount of acreage. Less than 100,000 cases were sold in 1956 compared to over a ½ million in 2012. For the past 50 summers Eden has celebrated “Corn”. Along with Corn, Eden Valley’s big volume commodities are Green Peppers, Grape Tomatoes, Lettuce & Cabbage. Using the latest cooling technologies including a vacuum cooler, hydro-cooler, & a forced-air cooler, Eden Valley Growers provides premier locally grown produce from May until November each year. The Growers strive to stay on the cutting edge in all areas of farming including Food Safety Standards, Watering & Fertilizing Technologies, & Pest Management. They continue to provide the BEST local-ly grown produce…produce they put on their own tables each night!

Learn about the academic, recreational, geographic, agricultural and historical interests and opportunities that collectively make up the “Fabric of Life” in Eden. More importantly, this exhibit will showcase the many fine people who are passionate about these organizations and who invest a large amount of their time and creativity to keep their organizations viable and to bring their valuable programs to town residents. The sidewalk towards the school will lead you to the Showcase. What you will find: Displays by many Town of Eden organizations, demonstrat-ing their purpose, programs, and people. Also, there will be many photographic displays of local farming operations - you will see the wide variety of vegetables, fruits, horticultural crops, dairy products and livestock that are produced in abun-dance on Eden area farms. Large Flat-Screen Television: A continuous slide show and video pre-sentation will be projected, helping to visually explain and promote the many organizations and programs that the town has to offer its residents. “Community Conversations” and “Focus on Farming”: Stop in to hear live interviews with individuals from various Town of Eden organizations and farms, each one with an interesting story to tell. Slides and video on the large-screen TV will accompany the conversations. A Question and Answer period to follow!

Wyatt Bromley and Alex Hutz of Boy Scout Troop 603 were presented the William T. Hornaday Award on June 17, 2013 for their conser-vation efforts at the Eden Corn Festival. The award was presented by Boy Scout Council President Michael Meyers, Council Scout Exec-utive Russel Etzenhouser, and Council Conservation Committee Chair Terry Yonker. Scout executive Etzenhouser stated, “ Boy Scouts Bromley and Hutz are among an elite group of Scouts to earn this award in the Greater Niagara Frontier Council. They are only the forth and fifth Scouts to
receive this award since 1952 in our Council.” Wyatt and Alex worked with the troop designing a program to collect recy-clable bottles and cans on the suggestion of the Eden Conservation Commit-tee. Wyatt designed the barrels that you see throughout the Corn Festival Grounds and Alex leads the collecting and sorting teams. Troop 603 logs and average of 250 hours of service time at the Corn Festival annually since 2009. The conservation efforts of the Boy Scouts have helped to keep recyclable material from being taken from our community to a land fill. The Hornaday Award is named for Dr. William T.Hornaday, former director of the New York Zoological Park and founder of the National Zoo. Dr. Hor-naday was an outspoken champion of natural resource conservation and challenged Americans to work for wildlife conservation and habitat protection. In addition to the work Wyatt and Alex did on the Corn Festival they each had a series of Merit Badges that they completed to be eligible for the award and then had to give a formal presentation about the project to the Council Conservation Committee. Arts & Crafts Show
The Eden Corn Festival begins with a day to think of others. It is called “Super Day” and has been an im-portant day since 1976 when it was called “Lend a Helping Hand Day.” For the past 37 years, it has been under the guidance of A. Betty Hill. It is a day that kids and adults with special needs can enjoy the food, rides and fun of the festival. It is made possible by local volunteers, organizations, and businesses that give to this wonderful day. Many thanks to all who donate their time, chaperone, cook, and entertain for our super friends.

The first meeting of Newell-Faulkner Post 880 was held on February 10, 1920, at the Kazoo Factory. The Post was organized by Veterans returning home after serving in World War I. The first officers of Newell-Faulkner were Lewis Galloway, Commander; Ivan Hammond, Vice Commander; Allyn Maplesden, Treasurer and Edward Bartlett, Secretary.
The Post was named after Loren Newell, a Marine, who was the first serviceman from Eden to die in action on June 7, 1918, and Herman Faulkner, the second, who died on July 14, 1918.
Walter Watson was elected Treasurer (now called Finance Officer) a post he held for forty years, following which Paul DeBalski held the position for thirty-one years.
Membership swelled in 1945 with the return of Veterans who served in World War II.
Unit 880, the Auxiliary, was granted its charter in 1946 with Esther Maddocks serving as the first president.
Squadron 880, the Sons of the American Legion (SAL), was granted its charter in 2000, with Donald Greuschow serving as the first commander
Legion meetings were held at various sites over the years until a parcel of land on North Main Street, now known as Legion Drive, the present location of the Post, was obtained. Work on the clubhouse began in 1955. Thousands of hours of donated labor, materials and equipment went into the project under a Building Committee headed by Norman Soule.
At the time of the dedication of the building in May of 1957, there were 141 members of the Post. Presently, the membership of the Post is 368 and the Auxiliary membership is 175 and the SAL is 133.
As well as the clubhouse and hall (which was added in 1963), the Post complex now consists of a softball field, a basketball court, bar-b-que pit, a large building for outdoor functions, a heated swimming pool for which Legion members donated labor and materials and which was later donated to the Town of Eden who continues to operate it. Various other buildings are located on the property erected by other organizations for use during the Corn Festival and other events. One building has been erected for the use of the Firemen and one for use as a snack bar, locker and equipment building by Little Loop Football. The newest building is a storage facility built by the SAL to house supplies for community events.
The grounds of Newell-Faulkner Post 880 are home to the Eden Corn Festival; The Post, Auxiliary and SAL have established four scholarships for graduating Eden Central Seniors. Each organization grants a $2,000 scholarship to students who will be attending a four-year college and each awards a $1,000 Scholarship to students who will attend two-year schools.
Newell-Faulkner Post 880, its Auxiliary and the SAL donate very generously to many youth activities such as softball, baseball, soccer, hockey, football and to many various community and civic projects. They also pay many expenses incidental to its facilities which are utilized by Little League, Little

REMEMBER WHEN ...
First Annual Program
• August 1st, 2nd, 3rd & 4th, 2013 • Eden Corn Festival 50th Anniversary54
In 1959 the Eden Chamber of Commerce organized a Garden Festival. It was successful but was not repeated. Then Eden’s sesquicentennial took place and many local groups got involved again, but no plans were made to continue any of the events. During the next year it was decided that the Town should sponsor an annu-al festival. Thus, the Eden Corn Festival was born!
The first of these annual festivals was held in 1964 and was spon-sored by the Chamber of Com-merce. Many of the events of that first festival continue to be attrac-tions today. Baseball games, the parade, pet show and beauty pag-eants trace their roots to that first
year. And many of the original vendors still participate today - the Cham-ber’s chicken barbecue, firemen’s corn, and Legion beer concession. There were thirteen stands that first year: Firemen (2), AFS, Campfire Girls, Grange, 4-H, Girl Scouts, 39ers Social Club, Artcraft, Eden Trap and Field, Little League, Legion Auxiliary and an agricultural exhibit. Approximately 6000 ears of corn were eaten (in 1984 this was over 45,000). Woody Woodworth won the first corn eating contest downing 13 ears in 5 minutes, Henry Agle was the first Corn King with his prize dozen ears going for $15, and Anne Heckman was the first queen pag-eant winner. The Chamber’s chicken dinner cost 99c that year. Festival profit for the first year was $249.91. For most of its life the Corn Festival has been blessed with good
The Eden Corn Festival Celebrate 50 Yearsweather that brings in crowds of people. However, in 1969 a “tornado” sight-ing canceled the parade; it was actually a water spout that dissipated upon reaching land. And in 2009 a terrible rain storm started during the parade and did considerable dam-age to the craft show ven-dors and many of the tents on the grounds. In 1974 the festival was extended from two to four days. In 1976 a pro-gram to bring in handicapped youngsters for their own chance to ride the rides and enjoy the grounds began as Helping Hand Day. More than 35 years later this is known as “Super Day for Special Kids.” From its first year, the Corn Festival has been held on the grounds of Newell-Faulkner Post 880 American Legion. During its early years, the Chamber of Commerce organized and ran the festival. As it grew in popu-larity and size, the new Eden Corn Festival, Inc. was formed in 1980 to run the operation.
George Guenther, William Robison, Ray Klein, Donald Williams, Wells Rothaug, Jack Smith, Peter Schwert, Bill Edwards, Howard Ralyea, William Fair-cloth and Robert Reed have all served as chairmen of this event during its long tradition. Jeff Winter is the current chairperson. Many local groups count on the revenue generated by their stands at the Corn Festi-val to fund activities all year. The Chamber of Commerce continues to cook chicken, the Le-gion operates the beer concession, and the firemen, their friends and families husk the
thousands of ears of corn that are consumed each year during the four days of the festival. It seems that corn has put us on the map!
