Three-year bachelors degree programs are gainingpopularity as many students look for ways to enter theworkforce faster. Though these programs are commonin Europe and Canada, condensed programs are nowattracting greater interest in the United States as studentsand education providers realize the unique benefits.

Students might identify three-year options as a swifterpath to earning a bachelors degree, particularly as thevalue of a college education rises in the current mar-ketplace. The median family income for those with abachelors degree or higher was $99,716, comparedwith $48,332 for those with only a high school diploma, according to Trends in College Pricing 2011, a report

detailing findings from the College Boards AnnualSurvey of Colleges.

Some leaders in higher education are exploring three-year degree programs as a solution to growing workforceissues. Many professional fields are growing faster thanstudents can acquire the necessary education to fill thepositions, and three-year degree programs reduce the

time it takes for candidates to graduate and enter the jobmarket.

The healthcare industry, for example, is grapplingwith a nationwide shortage of workers in several disci-plines, such as healthcare information technicians andclinical laboratory technicians, which U.S. News and

World Report listed among its 25 Best Jobs in 2012.Three-year bachelors degree programs are available forprospective students looking to enter both fields.

Perhaps one of the most widely acknowledged health-care worker shortages is registered nurses (RNs). Morethan half of the RN workforce is close to retirement, according to the American Nurses Association. Thisissue is to become more acute as the industry responds tothe patient needs of a growing population of aging babyboomers and the demands of a changing healthcare envi-ronment. Three-year degree programs allow graduates tofill these in demand roles and launch a career in nursingbefore their peers in traditional four-year programs.

As a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree becomesthe standard requirement for many entry-level nursingpositions, a three-year degree program is an efficientroute to a desired career, says Patrick Robinson, dean of undergraduate curriculum and instruction atChamberlain College of Nursing. Educate yourself

Before starting the path to a new careerIf youre looking to start a career - whether its because

youre just beginning your journey as a working adult orbecause youre ready for a change in life - you should knowthat the process is much larger than just getting a degree andlooking for a job.

A career involves knowing your interests in a particularindustry or area, knowing what to expect as far as compen-sation and responsibility and researching what tools andknowledge you will need to be an asset for companies inthat industry. Its wise to begin your pursuit by educatingyourself on what careers are in demand and what skills youneed to enter those careers.

Job seekers and students seeking a degree to buildtheir skills need to take control of their careers, says Abby

Kohut, a human resources executive, recruiter and authorof Absolutely Abbys 101 Job Search Secrets. Theyneed to understand the connection between their educationand a meaningful career by becoming more informed aboutwhere their interests lie, what jobs are in demand and whateducation is needed to gain the skills that todays employ-ers demand.

Here are few simple steps that can help get you started:

    1. Understand your interests - Some colleges and universi-ties offer prospective and current students complimenta-ry self-assessment options to help determine careers thatfit their interests. For example, University of Phoenix

offers Phoenix Career Services, a comprehensive suiteof tools and services specifically designed to help pro-

spective and current students make informed decisionsregarding their career paths and educational needs. Andthe Career Interest Profiler helps students to identifyprofessional interests in several areas, allowing them toplan ahead for paths of study.

    2. Understand employer needs - Knowing what jobs willkeep your interest going strong is a good start, but itsalso important to learn what employers need from work-ers in that field so you can take the right college coursesand learn the appropriate skills. You also should learnwhat jobs are in demand in your field of interest, so youcan assess whether your career of choice offers room

to enter and grow. University of Phoenixs Job MarketResearch Tool helps potential and existing students

learn the demand and typical salary information in the

current market.3. Understand educational needs - Starting a new careeroften involves the need to return to school for a newdegree so you can be more competitive when enteringthe job market. My Career Plan is a personalized road-map that University of Phoenix students incorporate intotheir academic journey so they are developing the com-petencies that employers are seeking in the workforcetoday. And career preparation tools provide studentswith resume, cover letter and interview developmentservices so they can put the best foot forward while jobsearching.

    4. Understand your financial responsibilities - Schools

will provide information on financial obligations andoptions, helping potential students determine if startingor going back to school is a viable option at the moment.Having a clear picture of the total cost and anticipatedtiming for paying off a college expense can help youset a budget as you pursue your new career goals.University of Phoenix, for instance, offers a complimen-tary Financial Plan designed to help prospective studentsestimate tuition and fees for their entire degree programand build a personal plan for how they will pay for it.A new career is an exciting opportunity, and can provide

a new look on life from income to social connections andeven where you live. Just be sure to educate yourself before

you jump into schooling so you can prepare yourself for theperfect career. (BPT)

A volatile economy and tough job mar-ket have revived American workers inter-est in continuing education. Now more thanever, adults are returning to educationalenvironments to advance their skills, train-ing and knowledge.

Continuing education generally refersto any type of post-secondary educationfor the purpose of keeping current withchanges in a particular field of study orfor preparation to obtain a certification, says Dr. Marianne Greenfield, a programchair at Argosy University, Atlanta. Someprofessions require that you earn continu-ing education credits in order to maintaina license. The goal of continuing educationis to offer adults who already possess acollege or university degree further oppor-tunity for learning without having to enrollin a degree program.

Now more than ever, its importantfor employees and professionals to keepup with all the latest skills and relevantknowledge necessary to compete in todaysworkforce, says Dr. George Spagnola, chair of the College of Education at ArgosyUniversity, Sarasota. While a traditionaleducation is necessary in todays work-

force, it is also a cornerstone upon whichone can build a better future through con-tinuing education.

Greenfield agrees. As more and morepeople are obtaining academic degrees, the advantage lies with the candidatewhose skills and knowledge are currentand relevant in the workplace, she says.Continuing education is especially impor-tant in areas such as human resources, engineering, technology, finance and healthcare, where rapid advances occur, leadingto constantly evolving practices. For manyprofessions, certifications and licenses arerequirements for employment opportuni-ties, so continuing education is importantfor job seekers and professionals in thosefields.

And obtaining continuing education ismore convenient for learners. Advancesin technology have made continuing edu-cation more accessible, says Spagnola.Options are available to pursue continuingeducation online, at a physical location orin a combination of both. These technologybreakthroughs help so many to continuetheir education and advance their profes-sional knowledge while working and rais-

ing a family.Given the number of people raising

families and working, that flexibility ofeducation can be key to continuing edu-cation success. Look for an institution or

provider that can meet your educationalneeds while still allowing you to meetyour personal and professional obliga-tions. Seek out a student-centered insti-tution that meets your needs both aca-demically and non-academically, saysSpagnola.

Although there are many course provid-

ers who cater to those seeking continuingeducation, it is important to find an accred-ited institution to ensure your efforts yieldresults, says Greenfield. Look for pro-grams that offer you access to and learningfrom quality instructors with real-life expe-rience in the specific field of study. Makesure that the program you are considering iscompatible with any requirements you willface for licensure.

And while there are costs associatedwith continuing education, many peoplecan find financial assistance in the form oftuition assistance programs offered throughtheir employers. Tuition assistance pro-grams are of huge benefit to employeesand the company, says Spagnola. As anemployee, you receive financial assistancefor your education and your employer, inturn, gets an employee advancing theirknowledge and skills and applying them tothe organizations.

The benefits far outweigh the expenseand many private sector employers will payfor or reimburse the expense if a compel-ling case is made for the added competitiveadvantage for the organization, agreesGreenfield. And if your employer isntable to assist you with the costs, the InternalRevenue Service allows you to deduct aportion of qualifying continuing educationexpenses on your federal tax return. If youpay the expense on behalf of a spouse ora dependent child, you can also claim thededuction. (BPT)

    Path (Continued from page 2)

High school seniors nationwide arepreparing to graduate, receiving collegeacceptance letters and possibly enrollingin a college or university. The challengingeconomy has made many of these youngadults acutely aware of the important roletheir degree can play when they face com-mencement once again, this time enteringthe job market.

Some schools offer degree programsthat address the skills required to enterfast-growing fields, such as cyber secu-rity, cloud computing, health care andaccounting - U.S. News & World Report

included accounting in its ranking of 25Best Jobs in 2012. This strong connectionto a promising career path can be attrac-tive to prospective students.

Knowledge of projected industrygrowth is extremely helpful as studentschoose their major or area of study, saysDr. Chad Kennedy, chair and professor ofbiomedical engineering technology in theCollege of Engineering and InformationSciences at DeVry University. Unlikesome career fields where opportunities

are shrinking, many technology and engi-neering fields are expanding at double-digit rates. In fact, many employers cantfind enough qualified applicants to meettheir needs.

Careers in technology are grow-ing up to three times faster than otherfields. For students interested in pursu-ing employment in this thriving indus-try, ComputerWorld recently outlinedthe 10 hot IT skills for 2013. Cloud

computing was among the most covetedskills. Though relatively unfamiliar to theaverage consumer, this data managementknowledge drives the services that sup-port many of todays businesses.

Similarly, cyber security professionalswill play an integral role in keeping infor-mation safe as the majority of companiesassets move online. According to TodaysEngineer, the monthly Web publication ofthe Institute of Electrical and ElectronicsEngineers, the cyber security field isgrowing in leaps and bounds.

Employment in health care fields is

also on the rise. An aging population ofbaby boomers and expanded access tohealth care has placed growing pressureon the health care industry to add workersin fields ranging from health informa-tion systems and biomedical engineeringtechnology to nursing and ambulatorycare.

Given the sensitive nature of medi-cal data, my role - ensuring data integ-rity, availability, and security for everycurrent and former patient - is essen-

tial and growing in demand, explainsAdam Franzen, a systems administrator atPresence Health Care who holds a bach-elors degree in Computer InformationSystems from DeVry University. Ashealth care evolves, so do the technologyand management skills that are central tocareer success in the field.

The workforce is rapidly evolving;some of the most desired professionalroles of yesterday are shrinking today

and will become obsolete tomorrow. Theclass of 2013 will enter emerging careerfields, managing the technologies thatdrive advanced hospital settings, lead-

ing development of the next cloud-basedapplication and protecting companies andconsumers from cyber and financial fraudalike. (BPT)

can be more intense with the same cur-riculum standards as typical four-yeardegree programs. However for motivat-ed, organized students, the professionalreward can be worth the hard work.

Chamberlain offers a Bachelor ofScience in Nursing (BSN) degree pro-gram that enables students to earn their

degree in as few as three years of year-round study, instead of the typical fouryears with summers off. Mary Flemister,a June 2012 graduate of Chamberlainsprogram, is currently employed as a nurseat a family practice in Virginia.

It was important to me to find aprogram that balanced expediency withdiversified classroom and clinical experi-ence - Chamberlains year-round struc-

ture was ideal, Flemister says. I hadtransfer credits so I was able to earn myBSN degree in only two years - the samelength of an associate degree program. However, I am more competitive in thejob market because I earned a bachelorsdegree.

    Recent industry data illustrates that

demand is mounting for degree pro-grams with this structure. According tothe American Association of Colleges ofNursing, the number of three-year BSNdegree programs increased from 31 to230 between 1990 and 2010. This trend isexpected to continue as factors contribut-ing to the national nursing shortage esca-late, and the industry necessitates BSNdegrees. (BPT)
