Lakehead University’s forty-ninth convocation for the conferring of degrees and diplomas is being celebrated on Friday, May 31, 2013 and Saturday, June 1, 2013 at our Thunder Bay campus and Saturday, June 8, 2013 at our Orillia campus.

The word “convocation” means “calling together.” It is a ceremonial meeting of the entire University community. On Convocation Day, University members and their guests wear special attire based on a tradition that dates back as long as seven centuries ago. The academic costume, also referred to as academic “dress” or “regalia,” had its origins in the medieval European universities. The regalia were devised to distinguish academic persons as doctors, licentiates, masters, and bachelors. In the middle ages they were worn as everyday attire. Gowns were a necessity because of unheated buildings, and hoods were needed to cover the heads of medieval scholars.

There are many variations of academic dress. The hood, gown, and in some cases the special hat worn by an individual are determined by the style of the university where he or she receives a degree. The colourful gowns and hoods of the universities from across Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom, and several other nations of the world are worn at Lakehead University today.

The academic dress chosen by Lakehead University is fashioned after that of the University of Oxford, the oldest English-speaking university in the world. The robes worn by the officers of the University - the Chancellor, who presides at convocation, the President (who is also the Vice-Chancellor) and the Chair of the Board of Governors - are all of the Oxford cut and trim. Each has its own distinctive colour. The colourful gowns worn by the individuals who are receiving honorary degrees are of the same design as are the black gowns worn by the student candidates. The ritual at convocation reflects the medieval custom that anyone in a university could wear a gown, but a hood was the symbol of a degree. Students who have met the University’s academic requirements (three, four, five, six or seven years of study in particular subjects) wear the symbol of their status as holders of a Lakehead

University degree. Lakehead University’s bachelor’s and master’s degree hoods are distinguished by a one or two inch colour border which indicates the degree acquired, e.g. white for Arts, gold for Science, blue for Education, burgundy for Nursing, etc. Lakehead’s first PhD degree was conferred in 1998.

In addition to “earned” degrees, the University confers “honorary” degrees which symbolize the highest honour that can be conferred on an individual by the University. An honorary degree may be awarded in recognition of scholarly or creative achievements or distinguished public service to the country or region. They go to individuals who have been designated by the University’s Senate, its senior academic governing body, as deserving special honour. At convocation the degree is awarded honoris causa, or “for the sake of honour.” A hood is also given to the recipient and it may be worn to any academic affair. Recipients of these degrees become honorary alumni of the University and they may affix, after their names, the abbreviation of the degree. The Doctor of Science, Doctor of Laws, and Doctor of Humane Letters, will be conferred this year.

The Board of Governors of the University also recognizes individuals who have contributed to the growth, development, welfare, and well-being of Northwestern Ontario, Simcoe County and of Lakehead University. This is done by the conferring of the title Fellow of the University. You will recognize University Fellows by their familiar blue gown with white velvet epitoge or scarf.

During the processional and the recessional the Marshal for convocation carries the Mace, a silver wand which is a traditional symbol of the University’s authority. This mace was given to the University by the Alumni Association in 1971. It bears the University’s motto Ad augusta per angusta, Achievement through Effort.

As Lakehead University celebrates its forty-ninth con-vocation with students, parents, friends and community, it is worthwhile to remember that convocation participants dress in clothes that are symbolic, not functional. They go through a centuries-old ritual for the conferment of degrees and diplomas - a milestone in the lives of our graduates. We thank you for being present to share this special event with us.

Eva Olsson is a Holocaust survivor who has drawn much good out of a life that was dealt such hardship early on. During the Second World War, she endured the unimaginable horrors of concentration camps, slave labour factories, disease, and the deaths of millions, including most of her own family. In denial and afraid of history repeating itself, she remained silent about her Holocaust experience for 50 years.

Today, Dr. Eva Olsson is anything but silent. Since 1996, over one-and-a-half million listeners in more than 3,000 schools, churches, meeting halls, and conference centres across Canada have had the opportunity to hear her speak. Dr. Olsson’s hope is to convince her audiences that it is possible for the human spirit to triumph over the worst in life. The response has been overwhelming, proven alone by the thousands of letters she has received from students who have been touched by her harrowing story.

In addition to these talks, Dr. Olsson has made presentations at various public schools, colleges, and universities throughout Canada and the United States on tolerance, compassion, and the consequences of hatred and bullying. She has spoken in prisons, at police force conferences, and on armed forces bases. In 2007, she was invited to speak at the University of San Diego’s Institute of Peace and Justice.

Eva Olsson is not only a prolific orator but a published author as well. She has written three books, two of which were national best sellers, and a documentary. Her third book, Every Step of the Way, was co-authored by her son Jan and published in 2011.

Dr. Olsson has been awarded both an Honorary Doctorate from Nipissing University and the Order of Ontario. In 2008, she was made an Honorary Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. Last year she received the Diamond Jubilee Medal for her continued service to communities across Canada.

She is quoted on her website as saying: “When people ask me how long I intend to do this important work, I remind them that bullying and genocide are still happening in many parts of the world.”

Dr. Eva Olsson credits her strong faith in God and in herself for a continued positive outlook on life, despite all odds.

Dr. Robert Bennett is being named a Lakehead University Fellow for his role in helping establish the University’s Orillia campus. His commitment and advocacy have been indispensable to Lakehead Orillia’s success.

Dr. Bennett, a Toronto dentist, is a lifelong proponent of quality public education and was a staunch supporter of the establishment of a comprehensive university in Orillia. As a longtime summer resident of the area, he is familiar with Simcoe County communities and has a good understanding of the need for postsecondary university education opportunities in the region.

His can-do attitude and extensive experience with Ontario’s postsecondary education system, as well as his private and public relationships in education, made Dr. Bennett an informed advocate to the City of Orillia’s project to establish a university campus.

Dr. Bennett provides extensive knowledge and experience from his 20 years as a member of the University of Toronto’s Governing Council, College of Electors, and the Faculty of Dentistry Alumni Association.

He has provided sage advice to the City of Orillia Mayor’s Task Force, two Lakehead University presidents, the Orillia Campus Dean, as well as other Lakehead faculty and staff, on how to most effectively rally external support.

Dr. Bennett’s involvement with the Task Force was the beginning of his unstinting and ongoing service to the development of the campus. Since its inception, he has been an active member of the Orillia Community Advisory Committee and served as chair of the Educational Liaison Sub-committee.

“I’m encouraged by the evidence of Lakehead Orillia’s economic and social impact in the region,” says Dr. Bennett, “Young people in Simcoe County and the surrounding area are now able to access a comprehensive university education close to home.”

Dr. Bennett is currently engaged in a family practice of dentistry in Toronto and lives with his wife of 50 years in Thornhill, Ontario. They have two daughters and four granddaughters, some of whom are now entering postsecondary education.

Mr. Will McGarvey is a professional artist, business-owner, and community leader who has been an ardent supporter of Lakehead Orillia for the past 10 years – longer than the life of the campus. He was one of a handful of citizens who in 2003 formed a committee to advocate for a university. He then became one of five people asked to sit on the Orillia Mayor’s Task Force to set in motion the process of turning this aspiration into reality.

McGarvey’s belief in the benefits of universities strengthened his commitment to Lakehead. “I love what a university does to a community – we have a more creative culture, a youthful dynamic, and the kind of opportunities that we just didn’t have 35 years ago when I returned to Orillia.”

From a personal perspective, these opportunities are especially important with his growing family of four children and five grandchildren.

Since the campus opened in 2006, McGarvey has been a member of the Campus Advisory Committee as well as the chair of the Community Relations committee since its inception.

Under his direction, the Community Relations committee has developed many partnerships that have benefited the University and the community, notably, fostering community connections for the University’s Humanities 101 program and work placements for social work and education students. The committee also regularly provides input about community needs and how the University can respond to them, making it a valuable asset to Lakehead as the Orillia campus expands.

Originally from Orillia, McGarvey moved away from Simcoe County when his celebrated broadcaster father James “Pete” McGarvey, a 2011 recipient of an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters from Lakehead, was transferred to Southwestern Ontario.

As a young man, Will McGarvey moved to Toronto and completed an Honours degree in Fine Arts from York University and a Bachelor of Education degree from the University of Toronto. It was when he was starting a family that he decided to return to his hometown. He and his wife Lucia opened the Shadow Box, a retail art store in downtown Orillia. McGarvey also focused on his artistic career and developed a reputation as an exceptional visual artist.

In 1998, he founded a second business, Shadowbox Learning Services Inc., an online e-learning production company. Will McGarvey looks forward to continuing his work as an ambassador and advocate for Lakehead Orillia.

Linda RodenburgALUMNI HONOUR AWARD

When the Lakehead Orillia campus opened in 2006, Dr. Linda Rodenburg was one of the first lecturers to teach there, but her Lakehead connection began much earlier.

As a student, Rodenburg earned her Honours Bachelor of Arts (English) and Bachelor of Education degrees from Lakehead’s Thunder Bay campus. Since her graduation in 1999, she has become an essential part of the University’s fabric.

Rodenburg has been instrumental in bringing the Orillia community and Lakehead faculty and staff together. She organizes events on- and off-campus and encourages participation in local events like the Mariposa Folk Festival.

One of her Alumni Honour Award nominators, Dr. Daphne Bonar, wrote: “This is always Linda’s driving motivation: to prevent boundaries from separating the campus from the city, to create a place that is, instead of merely a physical space, an ever-growing association of people engaged in creating and re-creating the community they want to live in.”

Rodenburg brings this mindset into her classroom, exposing her students to the community in which they live and study.

Despite this busy schedule, Rodenburg managed to complete a PhD in English from the University of Otago in Dunedin, New Zealand. She has also completed a Master of Arts in English from the University of Guelph. Rodenburg has served on the board of directors for the prestigious Stephen Leacock Associates, among others, and produced material to promote the Stephen Leacock Memorial Medal for Humour. In addition, she has brought in Stephen Leacock Medal members to speak to her classes and she incorporates humour into her own course material.

Dr. Rodenburg, who specializes in postcolonial literatures with a focus on indigenous cultural theory, received a Commonwealth Scholarship from 2001 to 2004. She was also nominated three times in a row by her students for a Lakehead University Contribution to Teaching Award for her dedication and innovative teaching.

Currently, Dr. Linda Rodenburg teaches literature and composition courses with Lakehead Orillia’s English department.

Michael Thorn is a rising young scientist and researcher in the field of biology. This Lakehead grad has also shown a commitment to sharing his time and knowledge with others.

When he enrolled at Lakehead University Orillia in 2006, Thorn’s initial plan was to become a teacher through Orillia’s concurrent education program. But he enjoyed his research work so much that he transferred into the Biology program.

Thorn graduated with First Class Standing in 2010 with an Honours Bachelor of Arts and Science degree, specializing in both biology and history. The following year, he attended Lakehead’s Thunder Bay campus to prepare for graduate school, obtaining an Honours Bachelor of Science (Biology) degree.

During his years at Lakehead’s Orillia campus, Thorn was a dedicated volunteer at the student-run writing centre, a teaching assistant in the Biology department, and an Environmental Sustainability Program Development Committee member who helped create an Honours program aimed at environmental sustainability.

Thorn was also a student ambassador for the Orillia campus and volunteered on Thunder Bay’s Lakehead University Student Union Budget Committee.

While still only an undergraduate, Thorn became a research assistant with the Interdisciplinary Studies department. This gave him access to lakes in Orillia, where he conducted studies on, among other things, natural biofilms in various aquatic ecosystems. Thorn presented his findings at several conferences, and his article Characterization of natural biofilms in temperate inland waters was published in the Journal of Great Lakes Research in 2012.

The science-savvy Mr. Thorn, who hails originally from Midhurst in Simcoe County, has received the Queen Elizabeth II Aiming for the Top Scholarship award, the 2010 Lakehead University President’s Award, an Ontario Graduate Scholarship, and the NSERC Alexander Graham Bell Canada Graduate School Scholarship.

Michael Thorn is currently a PhD candidate at Western University, where his research involves the study of Great Lakes Chinook salmon ecology and evolution.

Dr. Crystal Luchkiw, a member of the first graduating class of the Lakehead Orillia campus, earned an Honours Bachelor of Arts and Science in 2009. Her undergraduate research was a timely piece focused on gender differences in social networks while her honours thesis research explored the timeless topic of gender differences in gossiping.

But the combination of Luchkiw’s curious mind and desire to help others led to a shift in direction. During her final year at Orillia, she decided to pursue a career in medicine rather than teaching. After graduating from Lakehead, Luchkiw went to McMaster University where she completed a Doctor of Medicine in 2012.

Today, she is in the first year of a two-year family medicine residency at the Collingwood General and Marine Hospital and is chief resident of the Rural Stream 2013/2014 at McMaster University. Luchkiw has collective residency experience in pediatrics, family medicine, and community internal medicine.

Luchkiw has integrated her teaching abilities into her medical career. She has taught both a suturing workshop and an Objectively Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) preparation workshop to first-year medical students graduating in 2013.

She has also been an interview assessor for MD admissions and served on a variety of committees including the Emergency Medicine Interest Group and the Global Health Interest Group.

Luchkiw, who is originally from Barrie, Ontario, has worked as a supply teacher, tutor, and chiropractic assistant. From 2001 until 2004, she owned and operated a business called Amazing Events.

Her volunteer experiences include work with the Terry Fox Run and the Lakehead University Writing Centre of which she was the founder, manager, and student editor. This former varsity volleyball player has also taught a Teen Volleyball Skills Workshop.

Dr. Luchkiw hasn’t forgotten her roots. She plans to return to practice family medicine in Orillia where she’ll no doubt prove an asset to the medical community and the wider community, making her alma mater proud.

The Mace

The mace, originally a mediaeval weapon of offense in the form of a club, weighted heavily at one end, and usually made of iron, steel or brass, was designed to break through the heaviest armour. Bishops carried maces in battle, rather than swords, in order to conform to the canonical rule which forbade priests to shed blood.

The earliest ceremonial maces were carried by royal body guards known as serjeants-at-arms in formal processions of the courts of Phillip II of France, and probably Richard I of England. However, the practical purpose of discouraging attacks upon the king gradually gave way to the European love of ceremony, and as early as the 14th century maces tended to be more decorative and symbolic.

The mace has thus come to represent the authority of the body or institution which possesses it. In Canada’s Parliament, for example, a mace is carried into the House at the beginning of each session by the sergeant-at-arms. Similarly, at many Canadian universities, a mace is present at ceremonial functions to represent the ongoing authority, dignity and spirit of the university.

The official mace of Lakehead University, a gift of the Alumni Association, was designed by Ken Campbell of the Board of Education and constructed by John Butler, Senior Technician in the University’s Science Workshop.

In keeping with the responsibilities of Lakehead University, the new mace is made entirely of materials from the region of Northwestern Ontario. The head consists of a golden cluster of jack pine cones on a smooth silver hemisphere. It is surrounded by two nickel-silver rings on either side of a band of polished nickel inscribed with official insignia of Lakehead University. The base of the head is comprised of four triangular specimens of ore mined in the region: silver, gold, nickel and copper. Below the ores is a handle of silver which leads into a shaft of stainless steel surrounded by fluted bronze. Upon a narrow insert of silver is inscribed the motto of the University. The shaft ends in a boss of nickel-silver with an insert of local amethyst crystal. Each section of the shaft is separated by a small silver ring.

The mace was used for the first time in the Convocation ceremonies, Saturday, May 27, 1972.
