highlights Events you won’t want to miss at Congress.

Dear Perioperative Professionals,

Where will you be March 2nd through 7th in 2013? I hope you’ll be with me and 5,000 other goal-oriented and career-passionate perioperative professionals at Congress in San Diego. AORN Congress is the only annual educational event where perioperative registered nurses can learn new practice techniques and gain effective communication tools that are necessary to provide safe patient care. AORN Congress education sessions are presented by the top professionals in our field to give us the credits we need to keep our practice current in nine content areas. These sessions are scheduled to meet the expectations of all practice levels–for those entering the profession, in mid-career, and for managers and executives who want to strengthen their management skills.

Since the start of my election term, I’ve been very excited about our 2013 Congress because it’s our Association’s 60th annual event and we are planning to celebrate with practical purpose and, I expect, with the perfect amount of fanfare. Maybe no bells or whistles; but there’s no denying the energy and excitement that come along with the largest gathering of perioperative professionals in the world and the largest surgical products trade show in the US.

San Diego is a beautiful city with wonderful shopping, hundreds of parks, museums, and great restaurants – and most of the experiences are right on the Pacific. We have such a great location for our event, it gives us the opportunity to learn, work, and then stay a bit longer for a vacation with our friends and family.

I hope you’ll join us in Collaboration for Patient and Worker Safety at Congress in San Diego. Prepare now. Talk to your colleagues and managers about the importance of Congress because we want to see you there.

Best wishes,

Deborah Spratt, MPA, BSN, RN, CNOR, NEA-BC, CRCST, CHL, AORN President

Plugging into your PotentialTrue potential can only be realized by believing, trusting, and not quitting. J.R. explores the power of goal setting, staying motivated, and developing the perseverance that will get you to your destination. Each fork in the road is a chance to make a decision that will take you either closer or further from your goal. If you choose correctly, there are endless possibilities. And, while keeping focused on your goal is a good thing, you shouldn’t do it to the point of ‘getting stuck.’ J.R. shows the importance of being open-minded to new opportunities and fluid enough to respond to circumstances that, while unexpected, take you further than you ever thought possible.

Simulation: Collaboration between the Perioperative nurse and infection PreventionistThis one hour simulation session will focus on the journey of a surgical patient and provide an opportunity for participants to consider the impact of increased collaboration between the perioperative nurse and infection preventionist to improve patient outcomes. The presentation will explore the surgical journey of one patient and their family.

Peter J. Pronovost, MD, PhD, FCCMDirector, Armstrong Institutefor Patient Safety and Quality,Johns Hopkins

Co-author, Safe Patients,Smart Hospitals

Safe Patients. Smart Hospitals.Dr. Pronovost may have saved more lives than any laboratory scientist in the past decade using the simplest of tools: a checklist for preventing hospital-acquired infections. Within three months of implementing his checklist, Michigan reduced hospital-acquired infections in a typical ICU from 2.7 per 1000 patients to zero—zero—and sustained spectacular results for years.

Dr. Pronovost currently leads several large national and international safety projects. For this work, Dr. Pronovost has been recognized by Time magazine and been given a MacArthur Fellowship “genius grant.” He has won several national awards, and the US House of Representatives’ Committee on Oversight and Government Reform has strongly recommended his program.

In “Safe Patients, Smart Hospitals”— co-authored with Eric Vohr, a former Hopkins media-relations executive—he makes a compelling case for shaking up an archaic and often “toxic” medical culture. Too often, Dr. Pronovost writes, doctors “think they are infallible, communication between nurses and doctors is poor, and accountability is virtually non-existent.” He notes that doctors aren’t trained to listen to nurses, family members, or anyone else for that matter. “Medicine operates like a private club of self-styled deities where the entrance requirement is an MD.”

Dr. Pronovost proposes a two-fold strategy for bringing health care closer to the standards of aviation: simple, rigorous checklists designed to deliver proven treatments and procedures; and a cultural makeover aimed at tearing down the traditional hospital hierarchy that makes nurses afraid to challenge doctors even when doctors are ordering the wrong drug or operating on the wrong limb. Hospitals need a collaborative model, Dr. Pronovost says. Members of a medical team need to work like flight crews to redesign flawed systems of care.
