    Instructions for the 2013 Application

    Join Catholic school educators from across the United States for a five-day experience of intensive study designedto give participants the skills and resources to bring the lessons of anti-Semitism, the Holocaust, and modern-dayprejudice to their students and school communities.

    The Eileen Ludwig Greenland NationalBearing WitnessSummer Institute for Catholic School Educators is aunique professional development program of the Anti-Defamation League (ADL), the United States Conference ofCatholic Bishops (USCCB), the National Catholic Educational Association (NCEA), and the United StatesHolocaust Memorial Museum (USHMM) hosted in the Archdiocese of Washington.Bearing Witnessis the

    recipient of NCEAs 2000 SPICE award (Selected Programs for Improving Catholic Education) and the 2008Presidents Award.

    The Summer Institute is funded by the Eileen Ludwig Greenland Endowment Fund with support from the StanleyS. Bender Institute. Hotel accommodations, local transportation, and meals taking place during the program arecovered through these funds. Participants living outside of the Washington DC metro area will be provided with atravel stipend of up to $200 to cover transportation to/from Washington DC. Note: All participants are expected

    to stay overnight in a hotel, which will be arranged by ADL, from July 21 to 26, 2013.

    Conditions of Eligibility:

    Catholic school teachers of history, social studies, religion, English and ethics at the middle school and high schoollevel, as well as administrators and librarians, are encouraged to apply for theEileen Ludwig Greenland National

    Bearing WitnessSummer Institute. Teachers of other subject areas will be considered but must demonstrate howthey will integrate the Holocaust into the content of their course(s).

    Participants are expected to:

    Attend a five-day Summer Institute in Washington, DC from July 21 to 26, 2013; Submit a best lesson six months following Summer Institute that shows how information learned during the

    Institute has been integrated in the classroom; and

    Work with their local Anti-Defamation League office as appropriate to organize or support Holocaust,Catholic-Jewish, or anti-bias education programs.

    Section I - Knowledge of Holocaust Studies and Teaching Experience

    Please answer the following questions, limiting your responses to not exceed half a page per

    question. All answers should be typed.

    1. Describe your interest in the Holocaust and/or history of anti-Semitism.

    2. Explain what you know about the Catholic Churchs teachings on Jews, Judaism and the Holocaust.

    Please comment if this knowledge comes from experience with Holocaust Education, indicating anyrelevant workshops that you have attended or units that you have taught on this subject (note: previousexperience is notrequired).

    3. Describe how you currently integrate the Holocaust into your curriculum; how you will implement theinformation and materials gained from this program into your curriculum; and how you will share theinformation from this program with colleagues in your school and in your field if selected to participate.

    1. Letter of recommendation.Enclose a confidential letter of recommendation from your principal or department chair describing yourqualifications. If the application is sent via e-mail, the recommendation letter should be mailedseparately.
