Central Oklahoma is in its first year as a member of the Mid-Amer-ica Intercollegiate Athletics Association.

The MIAA, a 15-member conference of NCAA Division II insti-tutions in Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska and Oklahoma, was first or-ganized in 1912 as the Missouri Intercollegiate Athletic Association.

Over the past 100 years, the MIAA has gained the reputation of be-ing one of the top NCAA Division II conferences in the nation. MIAA schools have won 15 NCAA team championships and, since 1964, over 160 individual national titles.

The MIAA currently conducts champi-onships in eight sports for men and nine for women.

For the men, champions are crowned in football, cross country, basketball, indoor and outdoor track & field, baseball, tennis and golf.

The women compete for titles in vol-leyball, cross country, soccer, basketball, indoor and outdoor track & field, softball, golf and tennis.

The MIAA turned a new page on July 1, 1992, when the NCAA Division II confer-ence changed its name from the Missouri Intercollegiate Athletic Association to the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association.

The decision to make the change originated in 1989, when Pittsburg State and Washburn became the first schools outside the state of Mis-souri to gain membership in the MIAA.

The conference was first organized in 1912 with 14 member institu-tions. Of those original members, Central Missouri, Truman State and Northwest Missouri State still remain a part of the MIAA.

The first change in membership came in 1924, when the MIAA reorganized to include only the five regional Missouri state colleges: Central Missouri, Truman (at the time known as Northeast Missouri

The Mid-aMeriCa inTerCOllegiaTe aThleTiCs assOCiaTiOn State), Northwest Missouri, Southeast Missouri State and Southwest Missouri State (now Missouri State).

Over the next 56 years, three schools joined the membership: Mis-souri School of Mines (later Missouri-Rolla) in 1935, Lincoln in 1970 and the Missouri-St. Louis in 1980.

Ken Jones became the first full-time commissioner of the MIAA in 1981 and would be in the position for 16 years, retiring in 1997. Ralph McFillen succeeded Jones, serving 10 years before his retire-

ment in 2007.Jim Johnson succeeded McFillen in

July of that year and served as commis-sioner until September of 2010, when Dr. Bob Boerigter took over.

Southwest Baptist brought member-ship back to eight schools in 1986, be-fore the major expansion of the confer-ence in 1989. Pittsburg State, Washburn, Missouri Southern and Missouri West-ern began competition in the 1989-90 season.

Southeast Missouri State left the MIAA following the 1990-91 season and was replaced by Emporia State in the 1991-92 season.

Missouri-St. Louis departed the MIAA in 1996, Missouri-Rolla left in

2005 and Lincoln forfeited its membership in 1999. Fort Hays State joined the MIAA in 2006, NebraskaOmaha entered the league in 2008 and Lincoln re-joined the conference in 2010.

On July 29, 2010, the MIAA CEO Council voted to extend invi-tations to UCO and Northeastern State to become members of the league and on Sept. 24, 2010 it voted to extend invitations to Nebras-ka-Kearney and Lindenwood.

Nebraska-Omaha left the league in 2011 and Truman State will do the same next year, which will leave 14 schools in the MIAA.

sChool nICkname“Bronchos” was the nickname selected for Central Oklahoma

in 1922 by Mrs. C.W. Wantland, wife of long-time UCO football coach C.W. Wantland. The name was chosen from a number of suggestions for the name of UCO’s football team and became the nickname for all athletic teams at the school.

Mrs. Wantland was made an honorary member of the Letterman’s Club as a result of selecting the nickname, becoming the first woman admitted to that organization. sChool Colors

Bronze and blue were chosen as Central Oklahoma’s school colors in 1895 by school president Edmund Dandridge Murdaugh. The first public display of the bronze and blue was in Guthrie when a student represented UCO in the first oratorical contest ever held in Oklahoma. ProduCTIon CredITs

Dax leoneDax Leone is in his third year at

the helm of the Central Oklahoma baseball program and is off to a solid start in getting the Bronchos back among the NCAA Division II elite.

Leone, who took over the reigns in 2010 following stints as a head coach and assistant coach at vari-ous levels around the country and in Canada, is 55-40 in two years at UCO after back-to-back winning seasons.

His first team won 10 of its last 11 games to rally for a 24-23 finish and the Bronchos followed with a 31-17 campaign last year for the first 30-win season since 2008.

A product of Shawnee High School who was a standout pitcher at Seminole State College and Texas, Leone came to UCO after spending one year as an assistant coach at Oklahoma State.

Dax got his coaching start as the pitching coach/recruiting co-ordinator at East Central, spending three seasons with the Tigers.

He helped lead ECU to its only Lone Star Conference North Division championship in 2004, recruited eight all-conference players and coached LSC North Division Pitcher of the Year Cory Hall, who had a 1.76 earned run average that ranks as the best in school history.

Leone was also the head coach of the Kelowna (British Columbia) Falcons of the West Coast Baseball League during the summers of 2003 and ‘04, directing nine all-conference players and leading the team to a 35-21 record and their first-ever division title.

Leone spend the 2005 season as pitching coach at St. Gregory’s before becoming pitching coach and recruiting coordinator at Seminole.

He was with the Trojans for one season, directing a staff that had a 3.89 ERA, led the NJCAA in strikeouts with 481 in 432 innings and limited opponents to a .235 batting average.

Of the players Leone coached in 2006, eight were drafted and six went on to sign with a Division I school.

As recruiting coordinator at Seminole, Leone helped the Trojans sign one of the best classes in the junior college ranks and his last class had five players drafted.

Leone went from Seminole to Division I Louisiana-Monroe in August of 2006 and spent three seasons there as pitching coach and recruiting coordinator.

ULM pitchers posted some of the best seasons in school history under Dax’s tutelage and four of his players were taken in the major league baseball draft.

The Warhawks set a school record for saves (14) during Leone’s first season in 2007 en route to winning 30 games and qualifying for the Sun Belt Conference Tournament for the first time in five years.

In Leone’s second year at ULM, Derek Ward was named to the NCBWA National Stopper of the Year Watch List.

Four pitchers earned Louisiana Pitcher of the Week or Sun Belt Pitcher of the Week honors during that 2008 season, which ended with the Warhawks capturing the conference title in finishing with a 34-24 record.

the leone File

ULM went 32-27 and was runner-up in the conference tourna-ment during Leone’s final season in 2009.

Dax moved on to OSU and spent the 2010 season with the Cow-boys, working with the pitching staff. Three OSU pitchers were taken in the 2010 draft.

A prep standout at Shawnee, Leone started his college playing career at Seminole. He went 15-3 during two seasons there while helping the Trojans to a 107-17 record, including a national runner-up finish in 1997.

Leone moved on to Texas in 1999 and went 8-6 that season, including a 6-3 mark in Big 12 Conference games. He was an Academic All-Big 12 pick as a senior in 2000.

Dax, who earned both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from ECU, is married (Amber) and two children (Tal Gunner and Payden Brooks).

JeFF steeleIn his second year as Central Oklahoma’s associate head coach is Jeff Steele, who came to the Bronchos

in December of 2011 after a highly-successful six-year stint as pitching coach at NAIA powerhouse Lub-bock Christian.

Steele helped lead UCO to a 31-17 record last spring, the most wins since 2008. Jeff spent six years on the Lubbock Christian staff, with the Chaparrals going 290-76 while making

four national tournament appearances -- including a runner-up finish in 2011 -- during that span. LCU’s pitching staff ranked in the top five nationally in strikeouts each of the past four seasons, leading

the NAIA last spring with 487 stikeouts in 471 innings when the Chaparrals finished 50-14. A native of British Columbia, Steele was an All-Conference and All-Region pitcher at Collin County

(Texas) Community College before playing his last two years at Oklahoma Baptist. He was an All-American for the Bison in 2004, posting a 10-1 record with a 3.14 earned run average in 97 innings.

Steele started his coaching career as an assistant at Chattanooga State (Tenn.) Community College, helping the Tigers win 37 games while lowering their team ERA over two runs a game during his lone season there in 2005.

He went to Lubbock Christian the following year and helped the Chaparrals produce five Major League Baseball draft selections as pitchers, with seven pitchers signing professional contracts. Steele spent the past seven summers on the East Coast as a head coach in the Coastal Plains League (summer collegiate league), with more than 50 of his former CPL players having been drafted.

CoDy PainterNew to the Central Oklahoma coaching staff in 2013 is Cody Painter, who will serve as a graduate assistant

for the Bronchos.Painter earned All-State honors as a senior at Oklahoma Christian Academy in Edmond before going to

Clarendon (Texas) College. He redshirted his first year and then was named student assistant coach in 2010, working with the hitters and catchers while coaching first base for a team ranked as high as No. 15 in the National Junior College Athletics Association (NJCAA).

Cody went to Oklahoma State in 2011 and worked as a student manager for the Cowboys for two years before coming to UCO. He has spent five summers coaching high school prospect teams in Oklahoma, hav-

ing had 22 players sign with Division I programs and five players taken in the Major League Baseball draft.

tyrone hamblyWorking as a volunteer assistant coach for the Central Oklahoma program for the third year is Tyrone

Hambly, a former junior college All-American who also played at Oklahoma State.A native of Australia, Hambly was an All-American at Grayson County (Kan.) Community College before

going on to OSU, where he played in 2008 and ‘09. Tyrone was an honorable mention All-Big 12 Conference performer at third base as a senior after hitting .338 with nine home runs and 38 runs batted in.

Hambly was an assistant coach at Glencoe High School in 2010 before coming to UCO, where he works with infielders and hitters.

eady to have an immediate impact in its new conference is a Central Oklahoma team poised for a banner season in 2013. The Bronchos have four position starters and six pitchers -- including the two top starters -- back from last year’s 31-

17 club, with the addition of several highly-touted newcomers expected to make UCO a legitimate threat in its debut season in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association.

“We’re really excited about the MIAA and the opportunity it brings our program,” said third-year head coach Dax Leone, whose team competed as an NCAA Division II independent in 2012. “Not being in a conference last year was very frustrating and even though we had a productive season, our post-season aspirations were limited at best.

“This year, we’re on the same playing field as everyone else in the country and that’s exciting.”

UCO will build around a stellar pitching corps that features senior returners Edgar Lopez and Ryan Miller, who were a combined 14-3 with a 3.09 earned run average last season.

“We should really be able to rely on our pitching staff this season for stability and tempo,” Leone said. “They’re a pretty competitive group with a lot of quality depth and a good nucleus of right- and left-handers.”

Seniors Eric Garza, J.P. Maples, Cameron Mavroulis and Jared Wright are returning position starters, with Maples and Wright the top two hitters on last year’s team.

The Bronchos do have some major offensive holes to fill, though several transfers are expected to provide help at the plate.

“Offense is probably our big-gest question mark going into the season,” Leone said. “Last year’s club was one of the most productive in the country from a power standpoint.

“This group is pretty athletic and we have quite a few guys who can really run. We handle the bat well for the most part and should be able to press the issue on offense.”

Here’s a position-by-position look at the Bronchos: CatCher

UCO is in excellent shape here, featuring both great experience and depth. Senior Eric Garza started 47 of 48 games behind the plate last season and is the front-runner, but he’ll be pushed by Divi-sion I transfer Matt Malloy and a host of others. Malloy started 70 games during a two-year career at West Virginia, while two other newcomers -- sophomore Daniel Thompson and junior Ryan Stoup -- and junior letterman Kaleb Hoffman can’t be overlooked.

First base

The Bronchos will be looking for a new starter here, with junior transfer Ross Rose the favorite to take over after batting .353 at Eastern Oklahoma College last season. Junior Matt Malloy could also figure in if he’s not catching, which he did during two years at West Virginia.

seConD baseSenior leader Cameron Mavroulis is expected to switch positions

and take over at second after starting in the outfield last year. Junior college transfer Tony Kelly and redshirt freshman Hunter Marcum should also be in the mix here.

R

Edgar Lopez

2013 season outlook

thirD base Another newcomer is ready to assume the starting role at the hot

corner and the Bronchos are expecting big things from junior Matt Johnson, who hit .428 with 11 home runs and 48 RBI in earning junior college All-America honors last season. Junior Wacey Henderson leads a group capable of helping out here.

shortstoPJuniors Cesar Wong and Corbin Crockett are vying for

the top spot and both should earn playing time, especially early as UCO tries to figure out its best lineup. Both players are coming off productive junior college careers

and each one is looking to make an impact.

outFielDThis should be a strongpoint for the Bronchos,

with a trio of returners -- two starters and a three-year letterman -- and three newcomers slated to see action.

Seniors J.P. Maples and Jared Wright will battle it out in right field after both earned starting duty there and at designated hitter last year. Maples hit a team-high .427 with 17 doubles, 11 homers and 37 RBI and Wright had a .417 average with 10 doubles, six homers and 35 RBI, so offensive production is not a question with either player.

Junior college transfers Tyler Crabtree and Robbie Hoffman are expected to

contend for the left field spot, with redshirt freshman Dilon Argo and senior veteran Jor-

dan Mullin fighting it out in center field. Senior Cameron Mavroulis started all last season in left field

and could also be used if he doesn’t stay at second base.

PitCherAnother position of strength, with the return of six pitchers from

last year and the addition of several talented newcomers expected to make UCO’s staff one of the best in the MIAA.

Seniors Edgar Lopez and Ryan Miller are back to lead the starting rotation, with junior transfers Landon Hallam and Jamie McClure set to join them. Lopez went 8-3 with a paltry

2.58 ERA in a team-high 76 2/3 innings last season, while Miller was a perfect 6-0 with a 3.76 ERA. McClure was an All-Region pick in the junior college ranks last spring.

Seniors Alex Coplon and Joe Hollowell along with juniors Ethan Sharp and Jake Tuck also return from last year, with each set to be used in relief. Tuck had three

saves a year ago and figures to contend for the main closer role with junior newcomer Mason Justice.

Sophomore Taylor Pierce and juniors Mikel Beltran, Michael Hef-feran, Robbie Hoffman, Will Kilpatrick, Kylar Trumbla and Hunter Wood are also expected to help out on the mound.

DesignateD hitterUCO has several candidates capable of helping out here, though the

Bronchos will undoubtedly go with the hot hitter. Seniors J.P. Maples and Jared Wright were both used at DH last year and ended up as the team’s top two hitters, with junior Matt Malloy and others also capable of filling the position.

A potent offensive attack helped Central Oklahoma get off to a quick start in 2012 and the Bronchos went on to enjoy their first 30-win sea-son since 2008 while competing as an NCAA Division II independent.

UCO opened up 8-2 while scoring 10-plus runs five times and went on to lead the nation in slugging percentage (.561) and doubles per game (2.75) en route to a 31-17 finish. The Bronchos also ended up second in total home runs (64) and third in batting average (.342) in Division II.

“Our offense carried us a lot during the season, but we also made a lot of improvement with our pitching from the previous year and had a good season,” said second-year head coach Dax Leone. “We’re trying to get this program back where it belongs and took a big step in the right direction.”

The offensive onslaught started the first weekend of the season as UCO outscored Austin College 48-11 in a three-game road sweep, with Kevin Blue going 11-for-12 at the plate to lead the way.

The Bronchos went 1-2 the following week before opening the home season Feb. 17-19 with a four-game sweep of Northwest Missouri to get to 8-2, though five losses in the next seven games dropped UCO to 10-7 after the first weekend of March.

2012 season ReviewAustin Rycroft slugged three home runs and had a school-record

10 runs batted in to lead a 23-11 rout of Southwestern Oklahoma on March 6 and the Bronchos were 15-9 after a three-game road sweep of Southwest Baptist.

The Bronchos suffered their second three-game losing streak of the season the following week, but responded by winning 14 of their next 15 games to get to 29-13.

UCO started that stretch with six straight wins, ignited by a 13-10 road victory over St. Gregory’s as Tucker Brown went 5-for-6 with five RBI.

That streak ended with a 3-2 loss to Emporia State on April 5, but Edgar Lopez and Uriah Fisher combined for an eight-hit shutout the next day as the Bronchos beat the Hornets 1-0 in 10 innings to start a season-best eight-game winning streak.

Oklahoma Christian’s 5-4 win on April 20 stopped that run, with UCO bouncing back the next day to rout the Eagles 12-3 and reach the 30-win mark.

The Bronchos lost three of their last four games to end up 31-17.

Rycroft, Blue and Brown were All-Region picks, with Rycroft claiming All-America recognition.
