2013 Alumni Association Annual Report 2
Dear Fellow Bobcats,
Last year was an exciting year for Texas State, the Bobcat Family and the Alumni Association. We are proud of the many achievements and developments of the past year, and celebrate the kindness of spirit of our alumni who continue to give back to their alma mater with steadfast enthusiasm and dedication.
In 2013, Texas State University saw record growth in our student enrollment, now more than 35,000 students, the Texas State Bobcat Football team became bowl eligible for the first time in university history, and the Texas State Alumni Association invested in a new strategic plan and a brand that immolates the look and feel of Texas State University.
Texas State is well on its way to becoming one of the nation’s most appreciated and powerful universities, and is largely due to the loyal support of our alumni. Our 160,000 plus alumni may hail from different backgrounds and generations, but
they share a deep and abiding pride in their alma mater. They are grateful for the opportunities Texas State has created – and continues to create – for them in their lives.
The Texas State Alumni Association is proud to play an essential role in the advancement of our great university. And, of course, none of the accomplishments described in this report would have been possible without the support of donors, members, colleagues and partners who worked to support Texas State University.
We hope you will each accept our thanks, not only for what you have done, but for what you continue to do on behalf of Texas State University.
Once a Bobcat, always a Bobcat.

SCHOLARSHIPS
The Alumni Association awards scholarships with funds raised entirely through membership donations, event proceeds and gifts. In 2012–2013, we awarded 51 scholarships of $1,500 each for a total of $77,000.
Jenny Van De Valle is one of the recipients of the Vittitoe Internship Scholarship. The majority of scholarships are funded entirely by Alumni Association membership fees. Her scholarship has afforded her the opportunity to work as the Texas State Alumni Association Marketing Intern.
“I am so thrilled to have an internship that helps me enrich myself as a well-rounded individual in life as well as the workplace.” - Jenny Van De Walle, ‘14
UNIVERSITY AMBASSADORS
The Alumni Association co-sponsors the University Ambassadors, whose members conduct tours, orchestrate Bobcat Days, act as student representatives for alumni events and host Gold Book events. University Ambassadors is a student organization chartered through the Office of Undergraduate Admissions and the Alumni Association.
GOLD BOOk
The Gold Book is a photo scavenger hunt for Texas State students. The book is filled with points of pride, events, traditions and places at Texas State. Students record their memories and photos in the book for a chance to win prizes such as pennants, T-shirts and water bottles.
Students who complete the book receive a Texas State medallion to wear at graduation and are eligible to win a class ring or a diploma frame. In spring 2012, the Alumni Association awarded its first Gold Book class ring to Jenni Kraft. In 2013, over 25 rings were awarded to students.
The Texas State Alumni Association, Liberty Mutual and the Office of the Vice President for Student Affairs sponsor the Gold Book.
RING CEREMONY
Each semester, more than 500 students and 1,500 family and friends attend the official Texas State Ring Ceremony, sponsored by the Texas State Alumni Association. Students receive their official Texas State ring, which they dip in water from the San Marcos River.
LBJ OUTSTANDING
SENIOR AWARD
Rebecca Saathoff received the Outstanding Senior Award from the Alumni Association at the spring 2013 commencement ceremony. The LBJ Outstanding Senior Student Award has been given since 1981 to highlight students with leadership, character, campus and community involvement and academic success.
TEACHING AWARD OF HONOR
The Alumni Association presented this award in 2013 to Dr. Ann Elizabeth Burnett, Communication Studies, College of Fine Arts & Communications. This award has been given by the Alumni Association since 1989 to recognize, encourage and reward superior Texas State classroom teachers.
CONNECTING with STUDENTS
Supporting and engaging students is one of our most important and most enjoyable functions. We do this through the Student Alumni Chapter, as well as by sponsoring events and activities throughout the year and awarding scholarships.

CONNECTING with ALUMNI
Providing unique, fun and informative events and programs for alumni is the best way to keep Bobcats near and far connected. As the primary point of contact for alumni and friends, the Alumni Association takes pride in offering opportunities for Bobcats to get together.
EVENTS AND ACTIVITIES
During 2013, more than 10,500 alumni attended 70 events across the Bobcat Nation, all sponsored by the Alumni Association or chapters. Some of the most popular included Texas State Homecoming, the Distinguished Alumni Gala, the Evening of Excellence and Alumni Association tailgates.
Each year, the Alumni Association presents its most prestigious award, the Distinguished Alumna/Alumnus Award, at the Distinguished Alumni Gala. The award goes to graduates who are distinguished in their chosen profession or life work on a national or international level, and who have received recognition from their contemporaries on a national or international level.
Distinguished Alumni Awards in 2013 went to The Honorable Geoffrey S. Connor, ’85; Mr. R. Tom Roddy, ‘66; Mr. Cleofas “Cleo” Rodriguez, Jr. ’91; Ms. Virginia Ann Stevens, ’72; and Dr. Ken Wilson, ’65, ’66. The Evening of Excellence is an annual
reception and ceremony in which the Alumni Association presents Alumni Achievement Awards to honor Texas State graduates who are distinguished and prominent in their chosen profession or life work on a local, state or regional level.
At the 2013 Evening of Excellence,
Alumni Achievement Awards went to Gloria Campos Brown ‘76, Tony Hale ‘94, ‘96, and Carrie A. Hurt ‘87.
HOMECOMING
One of the most anticipated events for many alumni, Homecoming is a celebration of Texas State University students and graduates. Alumni from near and far return to San Marcos to relive college days, visit campus and rekindle their love for their alma mater. More than 1,200 alumni participated in Homecoming activities across campus in fall 2013.
DISTINGUISHED ALUMNI AWARD WINNERS
ALUMNI ACHIEVEMENT AWARD WINNERS
Alumni Association chapters provide a gateway for alumni to connect with other Bobcats. We currently have 11 chapters in Texas, eight chapters out of state and five special-interest chapters. More than 3,000 alumni attended over 50 Alumni Association Chapter-sponsored events in 2013.
