In 2013, the Judson community is celebrating the school’s 50th anniversary as a Christian liberal-arts institution. Yet the school was truly born 50 years earlier, as the under-graduate arm of Northern Baptist Theological Seminary. From 1913 until 1963, the two schools shared a campus, staff and faculty. In fact, Judson’s legacy stretches back to 1813, when Adoniram Judson, the first American mission-ary to Burma, set sail on his voyage to Asia.

The university came to Elgin in 1963. Under the leadership of Dr. Benjamin P. Browne, Judson College was established on a 19-acre estate. When the Board of Trustees purchased the estate it was home to a Georgian mansion and car-riage house; it would need much more than that in order to become a center for higher education. Yet despite its small beginnings, in faith Dr. Browne and the leadership kept working to build their vision. Their efforts were soon rewarded: On January 4, 1963 Judson College received its official charter as a non-profit educational institution from the state of Illinois. In September, the school welcomed its first students to campus.

In the 50 years since Judson College was established in Elgin, the school has changed dramatically. From a 19-acre private estate, Judson has expanded to 90 acres of woods and lawns. Nearly two-dozen buildings now dot the grounds, including four residence halls, a campus apart-ment building, a fine arts center, a fitness center, a student center, a 600-seat chapel, and a state-of-the-art LEED-Gold certified building known as the Harm A. Weber Academic Center, which is one of the most environmentally sustain-able buildings for higher education in the United States.Judson is now home to more than 1,100 students. More than 60 percent of Judson students come from a 50-mile radius around Elgin, but the university also draws from seven Midwestern states and more than 25 countries. As

the school’s student body has increased, so has its program offerings. Judson’s academics have grown from primarily serving the needs of future pastors and missionaries to becoming a full-fledged liberal-arts and science institution with a wide range of undergraduate programs including architecture, fine arts, education, business, science, history, psychology, social work, communications, biblical studies, Christian ministry and worship arts and several pre-professional programs. The university has also expanded --- adult pro-grams and several graduate programs.

Such an environment doesn’t just happen. It has been shaped and strengthened by all of the founders and leaders of the school, from Dr. Browne to his distinguished succes-sors: Dr. Amos B. Barton, Dr. Harm A. Weber, Dr. James W. Didier, Dr. Jerry B. Cain, Dr. William C. Crothers (In-terim President), and now Dr. Gene C. Crume Jr., Judson’s newest president.

Each of these Judson leaders has recognized the power of academic education combined with a strong faith commu-nity that fosters spiritual growth, lifelong friendships, men-toring relationships with faculty, and the personal qualities needed to follow God’s call wherever life may take you. It is a legacy worth remembering from Judson’s first 50 years and worth celebrating as the next era of Judson history begins. Judson University shapes lives that shape the world.

D R . nAt e A DA M SI am honored to be assuming the Chairmanship of the Judson University Board of Trustees as we head into the next chapter of our growing history. I do so with great appreciation and respect for Dr. Carol Thompson, who preceded me in this role, and who guided Judson through some challenging years, including the important Presidential selection processes.

Judson was used by God to play a transformational, life-changing role in my own life as a student more than 30 years ago, and I serve the University today out of a deep gratitude to God, and to Judson’s dedicated faculty and staff. With Dr. Crume as our new president, we look ahead to growing our student body, raising funds to expand programs and curriculum, and giving our graduates the best possible Christian education to shape their lives so they can shape the world around them.

There is much that goes in to offering a higher education experience that is practical and meaningful. The many changes that have taken place over the last year were prayerfully considered to ensure the successful future of this university. When I am on our beautiful campus and see the excitement in the students and the dedication of our faculty and staff, I am always reminded that God has His guiding hand on us and will not fail us.

We are in the midst of celebrating our Golden Centennial Anniversary with special events and highlights throughout the year. I am confident that the next 50 years at Judson will be even more rewarding. We continue to be blessed with gifts from our donors, that cover costs such as missions trips, student housing fees, student housing improvements, scholar-ships, athletic equipment upgrades, and more. We want our students to leave Judson not only with a stellar Christian education, but fond memories of the place where they studied, worshipped, ate, slept, and competed. Thank you for your part in making these opportunities possible for many Judson generations to come.

Dr. Nate Adams ’80Chair, Judson University Board of Trustees

R o G e l I A p e ÑA My name is Rogelia Peña and I am an international student from Caracas, Venezuela. My major is Elementary Education with ESL/Bilingual, and I am a junior this year. Even though I knew about Judson University, I did not want to go to a small school, or study education. However, my plans changed when I graduated from high school and had no college to go to. Since I graduated from an international school in Venezuela, I assumed I was going to study overseas. Therefore, I applied and got admitted into several schools in the Chi-cago area. However, I was not able to go to school because of strict policies regarding currency exchange in my country. As an international student who cannot get any loans, paying for school was already hard enough; with my government’s limitations it seemed impossible.

Therefore, I decided to work. I had taught English as a Foreign Language at an institute back home where people paid to learn English. Ironically, it was not until that rough summer when I had to “give up on school” that I realized how important education is. I was assigned a classroom of teenagers that were at-risk students from the poorest area in my city. They had been given a scholarship from the American Embassy to learn English. With them I learned that every student deserves high expectations because they can learn, and I also realized how education can empower minorities to contribute to society. I also had the opportunity to be the ESL tutor at the elementary school from which I graduated. I found a passion in helping students who have language barriers to succeed socially and academically. It was through my mentors, Marc and Amy Shuflin (both Judson alumni who graduated in 2006) that I was able to connect the dots God had placed before me. I realized I wanted to become an ESL teacher, and fortunately, Judson had started that program a few years ago.

Getting accepted was a big deal for me, but the real mountain to overcome was my government. I did all of the paperwork and other tedious errands for the government. Before it even got approved, I took a leap of faith and came to Chicago with Marc and Amy. This time the government approved! I was allowed to exchange my nation’s currency into dollars. However, I would not have been able to pay for school if it was not for the Cultural Ambassador Grant that is awarded to some international students. Even though every semester I return to Judson without knowing if the government will ap-prove of the currency exchange, I know God is on my side and He is the ultimate authority. In fact, in previous semesters, including this one, the government has not approved the entire tuition amount, but God has always been faithful! I have been awarded a President’s Scholarship and an Education Scholarship (Harold and Almeta Harper Elementary Teacher Education Scholarship) that have helped me continue my studies.

More than studying to get a degree, Judson has become my “home away from home.” From the very first day I visited Jud-son, I felt supported and welcomed. My advisor waited for me with treats, school supplies, and even a Spanish-English dictionary! The library took me in as a student worker, which is still where I work. I have made long-lasting friendships through mission trips, spiritual retreats, small groups, freshmen orientation, etc. Also, many professors have invested in me outside of class, and staff members have supported me along the way in multiple ways! Most importantly, I have found a family within the international community! I have had the privilege to be the International Activity Coordina-tor for two years in a row, and I have had a blast working with JSO to serve the student body! Through my leadership position I have realized that there is something special about relating to people who are so different and yet so similar to you! I guess the world is small, after all. It is so small (or God is so big) that someone from Venezuela found in Judson University an amazing community in which to belong!

pAt H A R G I S While I grew up in a loving, stable home and had a strong church experience in my youth, it was at Judson College in the mid-1970s that I really came to understand community. When education, faith, friendship and mentoring all came together, I felt both profoundly fulfilled and deeply content. After graduating from Judson with a degree in Human Relations (Psychology) in 1977, I attended graduate school and worked, but I really missed the Judson campus and its people. I realized that it had become the place where I most felt at home.

It was with profound gratitude that I made my way back in 1987 to start teach-ing, and I have enjoyed living on or near campus since 1991. My wife Jill and I served together as houseparents in Volkman Hall, and then she also began

working in the registrar’s office and taking courses to complete her bachelor's in Accounting (’96), so we have been members of the Judson community together. And we have many fond memories of raising Katie (’06) and Jeremiah here.

My time as a Judson student was a wonderful experience for me. Being at a small, Christian college meant that everyone knew each other and people could participate in multiple activities and groups. Some of my best memories are of choir (with some great tours, particularly getting snowed in near Colorado Springs), reach out teams, chapels, concerts (espe-cially Barry McGuire and the Second Chapter of Acts in Herrick Chapel), late-night theological discussions/debates in the dorms, and the Eyrie (games, music, milkshakes, and good company). And, of course, given what I’ve become, you might guess that I also enjoyed classes, reading, and writing. At Judson, there has always been a good balance of follow-ing Jesus and providing a strong education.

Given all that the Judson had done for me, and what it came to mean to me as a student, I kept in close touch, hoping that an opportunity to teach might develop. Fortunately, it did at just the right time. And though it wasn’t one of the fac-tors that drew me back, one of the greatest benefits of returning has been the opportunity to teach alongside many of the professors that taught me as a student.

I’m passionate about teaching because in my experience, reading a text and discussing it with others is what truly helps the mind grow and mature. Seeing students develop their own perspective, whether in an essay exam or paper or presen-tation, still gives me a sense that I’m contributing to the next generation of Christian thinkers and leaders.

I’m also passionate about supporting Judson financially. Jill and I started contributing shortly after we got married in 1979, though at that time it was a very small amount given annually. Over the years, that has grown into more frequent contributions to ongoing projects (like chemistry Professor Dr. Rolf Myhrman’s hunger research), the annual fund, and the various capital campaigns. Eventually, I helped initiate the drive for an endowed scholarship to honor Marc Didier and Donna Shotwell, students who were tragically killed in a one car accident in the fall of 1975. When my parents died, my brother and I endowed a memorial scholarship in their names. And most recently, Jill and I have tried to do some-thing substantial every year for the Imago Film Festival.

Making donations, for us, is something we have always felt is a natural part of our faith journey, and we have wanted to go beyond our giving to the local church. Judson’s work and ministry have benefited our family greatly, so we want to help students, many of whom will have difficulty funding a private education, and contribute to programs and projects that will not get done without special gifts.
