Our researchers are working to understand and protect the planet; explore the basis of human knowledge, learn and explore human creativity; enrich human life and society; and understand cultures and address disparities in society. These research themes are multi-disciplinary, inclusive and impactful, and they focus on areas where our campus has broad expertise. We are committed to building on the tradition of excellence established by our founders and serving as a model student-centered, research-focused, service-oriented public university. I thank you for supporting UC San Diego and embodying our mission. Together, we are transforming lives and making our world a better place.

A LETTER FROM

PRADEEP K. KHOSLACHANCELLOR, UC SAN DIEGO

UC SAN DIEGO CONTINUES TO RANK AMONG THE TOP

UNIVERSITIES IN THE COUNTRY AND THE WORLD, AND OUR ALUMNI PLAY A BIG PART IN THIS DISTINCTION.

Just this year, UC San Diego was listed as the 3rd best public university in the United States and the 20th best university in the world by the Center for the World University Rankings, which measures universities’ quality of research, faculty, influence, enterprise and successful alumni. Our success—and the positive impact we have on our communities and world—reflects back on our university, boosting our reputation, rankings and the value of a UC San Diego degree. Together, we will continue to achieve high levels of excellence through the goals and research themes we collectively developed through our first-ever Strategic Plan. We are fulfilling our mission to transform society through education, research and service. Our billion-dollar research enterprise nurtures a collaborative and interdisciplinary culture that advances the frontiers of knowledge, shapes new fields, disseminates discoveries that improve lives, and educates next generation leaders who will address our world’s most pressing challenges.

VELOCITY AND ACCELERATION. Not only do these principles best represent the evolution of alumni engagement and UC San Diego, they also reflect our ethos, spirit and the trajectory of our ambition. Together, we're building the future and inspiring the next generation of Tritons.

It was only 50 short years ago that UC San Diego was born as an experiment. Since then, it has matured into an intellectual powerhouse—a world leader in research, the arts, humanities and teaching. Alumni and Community Engagement serves our Triton Family—including alumni, students, staff, faculty and friends—from the moment a student steps on campus, to long after they’ve graduated.

With Chancellor Khosla's bold leadership, we are also changing centuries-old models in our profession. Together, we’re building a more exciting, contemporary model, while delivering new programs and initiatives to serve, engage and earn our community's confidence and support.

The most exciting of these changes is the integration of the Career Services Center with Alumni and Community Engagement. We are inspired by thousands of volunteers and supported by our Board of Directors who echo the most powerful and comprehensive commitment to the enrichment, success and professional mobility of our alumni and students.

I invite you to experience an exciting year of velocity and acceleration in this year’s Alumni and Community Engagement’s retrospective. Together, we are advancing UC San Diego. I hope you will continue to be a part of the exciting future we are building on behalf of one of the world’s finest universities. We invite you to connect with us in a way that most strongly resonates with you.

Thanks to your support, we’re moving forward, together.

The Alumni and Community Engagement (ACE) team works to create meaningful experiences for UC San Diego alumni, students and the entire Triton Family, including parents, staff, faculty and friends, to foster a spirit of philanthropy and engagement. ACE provides extensive programming for four areas: Alumni Relations, Career and Professional Development, Regional Outreach and Engagement, and Philanthropy.

Through signature and regional events, networking opportunities, recreational and cultural activities, symposiums with faculty members, volunteer activities, and the engagement of new and prospective students, ACE engages thousands of alumni, students, donors and friends every year. Its reach extends nationally and globally, from right here in La Jolla to Guangzhou, China. ACE is focused on promoting university priorities, creating positive philanthropic experiences, and building and sustaining lifelong relationships between alumni, donors, students and friends and UC San Diego.

VISION AND CHARTER

Together, we create meaningful experiences for UC San Diego alumni, students and the entire Triton Family that ignite passion and deepen commitment to serve as ambassadors, volunteers, leaders and philanthropists.

In support of Alumni and Community Engagement’s mission to increase alumni engagement and philanthropy to UC San Diego, the Alumni Relations team works to boost program participation, regional outreach, volunteer service and leadership opportunities. Alumni Relations provides graduates with continued access to the resources of the university, communicates news, and hosts special events. It recognizes outstanding alumni, provides undergraduate scholarships to student leaders, assists the university with legislative advocacy, and brings alumni together in San Diego, across the nation and around the world to enjoy networking, educational and social forums designed to help them find and cultivate meaningful and valuable relationships.

At the conclusion of this fiscal year, these efforts resulted in nearly 23,000 engaged alumni and friends.

A CONVERSATION WITH NICK WOODMAN, ’97 More than 500 alumni, students and invited guests were treated to a rousing two-hour chat with GoPro Founder and CEO, Nick Woodman. At the event, Woodman was presented with a ceremonial key to UC San Diego’s road to Black’s Beach, where he once surfed while attending school. Leading up to the event, Alumni and Community Engagement hosted a Facebook contest, “Through My Lens,” challenging students and alumni to create a short video showcasing UC San Diego through their eyes. The winner received a GoPro prize package and had the opportunity to meet Woodman at the event.

TASTE OF UCSD Attendees enjoyed an inside look at UC San Diego research direct from five academic rock stars in bite-size presentations, followed by refreshments prepared by alumni culinary artists and brew masters.

TRITON 5K More than 3,000 alumni, faculty, staff, students and community members returned to UC San Diego for the annual Triton 5K, raising more than $300,000 for student scholarships. Established in 1996 as the Chancellor’s Challenge Run/Walk for Scholarships, the Triton 5K has raised more than $3.3 million benefiting more than 900 UC San Diego students since its inception.

Participants at this year’s race had the chance to run (or walk) past renowned art pieces from the Stuart Art Collection, including the Bear along with the iconic Sun God statue. A popular component was the 100-meter Kids Fun Run, where approximately 200 of the university’s littlest Tritons, ages

12 and under, dashed to the finish line. Following the races, participants and supporters enjoyed the event festival featuring live music, jousting, inflatable bounce houses and a healthy living fair.

TRUE TRITON BRUNCH The second annual True Triton Award was presented to Steve Schreiner, ’80, during the True Triton Brunch at the conclusion of Alumni Weekend. The award recognizes a UC San Diego graduate who embodies the spirit of the university through tireless dedication, passion and commitment to their alma mater through active service, leadership and advocacy. The event also recognizes the hundreds of alumni volunteers who have devoted countless hours in support of the university.

50TH ANNIVERSARY WATERMELON DROP The Triton Family gathered to witness the 50th anniversary of UC San Diego’s oldest tradition, the Watermelon Drop. The green gourd was dropped by the “Watermelon Queen” from the seventh floor of Urey Hall but fell short of breaking a 40-year-old record for the farthest scattered debris—only 49½ feet. The anniversary was commemorated by alumni and friends who gathered for cake and fresh watermelon in Revelle Plaza.

NIGHT AT THE PADRES More than 500 Tritons gathered to watch the Padres take on the Washington Nationals at PETCO Park. Nick Woodman, ’97, recipient of the 2014 Outstanding Alumnus Award, threw out the first pitch. This family-friendly event featured fun activities like face painting and one-of-a-kind photos.

From college fairs to commencement, alumni are encouraged to support UC San Diego’s community service efforts. More than 1,000 alumni volunteers and volunteer leaders gave their time this year, a 23 percent increase over last year.

THE SAN DIEGO PROMISE The San Diego Promise is an on-going volunteer program to engage local K-12 educators with UC San Diego alumni where help is needed most, whether in the classroom, school garden, or activity center. The program features a variety of service opportunities attracting a diverse collection of alumni volunteers who shared their unique talents and expertise to positively impact local schools and contribute to student success.

REGIONAL CLUBS Regional alumni clubs connect Tritons where they live and work. Clubs host a wide variety of events including recreational, cultural, professional and community service activities. This year, UC San Diego had 19 active clubs across the country and beyond, with nearly 2,000 alumni participants.

In addition to our regional alumni clubs the members of the Regional Outreach team live and work in our primary alumni markets, including Los Angeles and the San Francisco Bay Area. Team members actively engage, cultivate and deepen the commitment of our alumni and greater Triton Family alumni through one-on-one meetings, facilitating connections, and inspiring philanthropy.

TRITON MAGAZINE 10-YEAR ANNIVERSARY The UC San Diego alumni publication, Triton, was distributed to approximately 90,000 alumni, parents and friends, three times a year, in January, May and September. Triton magazine published more than 460 class notes and 20 profiles on alumni ranging from entrepreneurs and engineers, to politicians, artists and physicians. The magazine also contained 28 feature-length stories and 91 updates on university research and academic developments. An online edition of the magazine is available at alumni.ucsd.edu/magazine, which also includes an archive of issues since its inception in 2004.

The September 2013 issue (top right) featured founder and CEO of GoPro, Nick Woodman, ’97, in “The Best Ride of our Lives.” This issue also featured a special package examining the impact of the university on the local educational community in “Back to School,” as well as the growing number of alumni beer masters and breweries in “Beyond the Brew.”

The January 2014 issue (middle right) featured an “unimaginable imaginary friend” named Beekle, courtesy of alumnus and children’s book illustrator and author, Dan Santat, ’98. The issue also celebrated the 10th anniversary of the magazine by revisiting previous stories, and offered a closer look at the campus growth that has occurred over the past decade.

The May 2014 issue (bottom right) featured bassist and composer Nathan East, ’78, on the cover in “Guitar Man.” The magazine also covered the latest in Alzheimer’s research from UC San Diego in “The Long Goodbye,” a closer look at a robot nicknamed “MiP” developed at the university in “Tales of a Toy Robot,” and a Q&A with Chancellor Khosla, and much more.

CAREER & PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

The career and professional development team provides professional education and advising services to UC San Diego students and alumni seeking to define career goals, make connections, and gain admission to professional and graduate school programs.

A BOLD NEW MODEL As part of UC San Diego's innovative campus-wide strategic plan, this fiscal year brought about a groundbreaking integration of the Career Services Center within Alumni and Community Engagement.

This exciting integration, one of the first of its kind at a major public university, created the opportunity to build a new model of career services by leveraging the powerful network of more than 160,000 alumni.

Under this new model, the first priority was to increase student utilization of the center and its resources. With an average of nearly 12,500 student users in the two previous years, an audacious goal of 20,000 was set for FY14.

At year’s end, over 21,000 users utilized the Career Services Center, representing a robust 60 percent growth in usage over the previous year.

20 | Alumni and Community Engagement

Page 23: 2013-2014 Retrospective

LIFELONG ACCESS FOR ALUMNI In spring 2014, the Career Services Center enhanced the package of programs and services all UC San Diego alumni can access, including Port Triton job and internship listings, career and graduate school fairs, professional workshops and more. This move eliminated a longstanding “Alumni Career Plus” subscription fee program and places the Career Services Center among just a handful of centers in the nation to provide alumni with free, highly-valued resources.

ALUMNI ADVISOR NETWORK In September 2013, UCSD Alumni and the Career Services Center launched the Alumni Advisor Network (AAN) to help students search and connect with alumni by industry, employer, geographical location, degree and years of experience. Alumni serve as online advisors to students providing résumé reviews, interview assistance and general career conversations. After reviewing a catalog of available professionals, students connect 1:1 with alumni via online or phone sessions, all coordinated through the third-party platform. The AAN boasts more than 750 alumni advisors and nearly 1,000 registered students.

FIRST-YEAR EXPERIENCE The career and professional development team collaborated with the university’s six colleges to contribute course content, resources, and instructor training for the newly created First- Year Experience class sessions covering the major-career connection, self-assessment and career decision-making, and experiential learning. This pilot class, which is a part of UC San Diego's Strategic Plan, impacted 600 freshmen students (100 at each college) in its first year, with planned expansion in 2016.

ENGAGING ALUMNI INDUSTRIES The Regional Outreach and Engagement team engages with alumni and executives from the top 200 companies to strengthen talent recruitment from campus, grow engagement with the university through affinity communities, promote relationships with key alumni employers, and collaborate with campus partners, including but not limited to, the Rady School of Management, UCSD Extension, Jacobs School of Engineering, and Corporate and Foundation Relations.

TRITON CORPORATE PARTNERS The Triton Corporate Partnership Program was established to recognize employers who support the innovative programs and initiatives at the Career Services Center. They represent partners who are invested in the professional and career development of UC San Diego students and alumni. Participation in the program is instrumental in helping to provide high-quality services and programs to students and alumni.

These partnerships with UC San Diego provide engagement opportunities with top student and alumni talent, the university, community leadership, and cutting-edge research. In addition, corporate partners provide students and alumni with professional insights and valuable connections to ensure a successful and satisfying career transition.

LAUNCHING THE NEW CAREER SERVICES CENTER Slated for 2015 is the creation of a vibrant and functional new Career Services Center space, including enhanced industry engagement opportunities, professional development and career education programs focused on the success and mobility of UC San Diego students and alumni.

THE GUARDIANS The Guardians will ensure that UC San Diego undergraduate students possess sufficient information about career choices and develop the ability to promote themselves in a global economy upon graduation. Programs will be designed in collaboration with the Career Services Center to expose students to career opportunities and necessary skill sets through information sessions, the development of professional network contacts, and introduction to the effective tools for their career search. The new initiative will engage a group of seasoned alumni, friends and campus leadership in meaningful opportunities to inspire, pride, loyalty and investment in the university.

RADY SCHOOL AND CAREER SERVICES CENTER: A PILOT PROGRAM The Rady School of Management at UC San Diego, a graduate level business school, forged a partnership with the Career Services Center to provide business minor students enrolled in the school’s enterprise finance course with a variety of preparatory programs and industry engagement opportunities to earn points toward their course grade. The pilot program, launched this academic year, will actively engage nearly 600 business-minded juniors and seniors in career development preparation as an integral part of their academic coursework.

PARTNERSHIP WITH ACADEMIC DEPARTMENTS In 2014, the career and professional development team selected 12 academic departments for a collaborative partnership to deliver enhanced career advising services to its students. This innovative approach bridges the gap between academia and career positions following graduation. All academic departments will be engaged by 2016.

PHILANTHROPY

INSTILLING A CULTURE OF GIVING BACK

3,500student donors chose to support students scholarships in fiscal year 2014, the most in UC San Diego history.

Alumni and Community Engagement developed a strategy to unify the university’s scholarship fundraising efforts. The resulting program, “You Touch a Life. They Touch the World,” recognizes that UC San Diego students are the leaders and innovators of tomorrow and targets three areas—excellence, opportunity and experience.

Alumni and Community Engagement is building an integrated and strategic Annual Giving fundraising program, inclusive of UC San Diego’s broad audiences and in order to advance its community engagement and private support objectives.

THE PHILANTHROPIC FAMILY Gifts from the Triton Family, including alumni, faculty, staff, students and friends support many areas of campus including scholarships, fellowships, research, innovation, and student programs. Nearly 28,500 total donors made a gift in fiscal year 2014, totaling $13.8 million.

CHANCELLOR’S ASSOCIATES: THE SPIRIT OF GENEROSITY Chancellor’s Associates are influential connectors and facilitators. They are committed to transforming UC San Diego and our community. They are the premier group of donors recognized for their annual leadership gifts to the university. These generous alumni, parents and friends give $2,500 or more each year to be used at the Chancellor’s discretion to fund the university’s greatest needs. It is a diverse group made up of young alumni, longtime philanthropists, and everyone in between. In fiscal year 2014, the program surpassed its fundraising goal of $750,000, raising more than $820,000.

Chancellor’s Associates had touched the lives of hundreds of students by making a life-changing UC San Diego education available to ambitious, high-achieving students. Chancellor Pradeep K. Khosla created the Chancellor’s Associates Scholarship program to improve the pathway to higher education for high achieving local students. The program serves students from Gompers Preparatory Academy, Lincoln High School and The Preuss School UCSD, as well as eligible community college transfer students from San Diego City College, Southwestern College, and Imperial Valley College. To date, 120 students from diverse backgrounds have benefited from the Chancellor’s Associates Scholarship.

TRITON SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM Student scholarship support is a university-wide imperative. Scholarships allow our students to overcome socio-economic, cultural, community and geographic barriers to access UC San Diego and the benefits of higher education. A scholarship can change the life trajectory of a college student and consequently make a difference in our society, our nation and the world.

In fiscal year 2014, UC San Diego raised more than $5.2 million for scholarships. That is a 22 percent increase over fiscal year 2013 and includes all current and endowed scholarship giving, as well as unrestricted support directed to scholarships from Chancellor’s Associates, Chancellor’s Fund for Excellence and the Parents Fund.

Alumni philanthropy is an important component to advancing scholarship support. Since 1994, generous donations have increased the UCSD Alumni scholarship endowment to $6 million. The endowment provides funding to the Regents Scholarship and the Alumni Leadership Scholarship.

ALUMNI LEADERSHIP SCHOLARSHIP In fiscal year 2014, UCSD Alumni awarded 38 Alumni Leadership Scholarships. The program has raised $2.38 million dollars and 31 alumni have established endowed scholarships. Thanks to their generosity and positive vision, as of August 31, 2014, this scholarship program has provided $572,000 in scholarship funding to 194 students. To date, 150 recipients of the Alumni Leadership Scholarship have graduated from UC San Diego.

TRITON PARENT AND FAMILY AMBASSADORS A partnership between Parent and Family Programs, Undergraduate Admissions and UCSD Alumni, the Triton Parent and Family Ambassador program brings dedicated and enthusiastic parents and family members together to enhance the UC San Diego student experience. Together they help with key campus priorities including student recruitment, acceptance rates, retention and parent involvement.

In addition, ambassadors demonstrate the importance of philanthropic support by making their own participating gift—any amount, to any campus area—during the term of their involvement. There are currently 44 ambassadors from across the United States and abroad.

DOING MORE, TOGETHER

TELEPHONE OUTREACH PROGRAM The Telephone Outreach Program (TOP) employs up to 16 students who operate the phones daily, year-round, to share their experience about UC San Diego, and to ask alumni and friends for their philanthropic support. This year, new alumni donors contributed more than $120,000 through TOP. Students connected with 18,418 alumni and 675 lapsed donors were reengaged through the phonathon.

STUDENT PHILANTHROPY Student Foundation trustees are the driving force behind the promotion of student philanthropy at UC San Diego. They promote a culture of philanthropy by inspiring other students to be thankful for the opportunities they have at UC San Diego, and to support those in need. The 20-member Student Foundation board raised $46,476 from 3,500 unique and returning student donors, and $69,725 from alumni and community leaders for a combined total of $116,201 for student scholarships.

ALUMNI DISCOVERY INITIATIVE The Alumni Discovery Initiative engages alumni in active dialogue with recent graduates and student ambassadors from UC San Diego. Whether you live in San Diego, Los Angeles, Bay Area or beyond, ambassadors schedule in-person and by phone meetings with hundreds of alumni.
