2013-2014 USA FIELD HOCKEY ANNUAL REPORT 3

The year of 2013 was a paradigm changer for USA Field Hockey. The biggest causation was the establishment of our relationship with a new spectacular facility in Lancaster, Pa., Spooky Nook Sports. Spooky Nook Sports is a multisport facility encompassing a 15-acre building with playing venues both inside and outside the building complex. The field hockey campus includes scores of indoor courts, sports science facilities plus locker room and coaching offices. Outside, there are two turfs with one under a dome which provides for year round play. It is likely the largest multisport facility found globally, and certainly offers a profoundly top shelf facility to field hockey for both the indoor and out-door game. The facility is now known, for hockey purposes, as the Home of Hockey.

The USA Field Hockey Women’s National Team is domiciled in the building (having moved from the California based Chula Vista Olympic Training Center) along with a robust high performance staff headed by head coach Craig Parham, a multi-time Olympian and Olympic coach. The facilities for the team and others using the facility are absolutely top level and the sports science and nutritional opportunities are of a higher quality due to their sport specificity for hockey. Part and parcel of the contractual relationship with Spooky Nook Sports’ owners of the facility, is the staging of many hockey activities and events. The advantages are numerous including the ge-ography of Spooky Nook Sports’ location (in hockey’s hotbed) along with the pristine new facility. This new facili-ty is a game changer for the sport and we will continue to see advantages as the years go by.

The financial condition of USA Field Hockey remains strong even with the contractual obligations of replacing two turfs at the Virginia Beach National Training Center facility. Although the Virginia Beach facility is no longer the na-tional training site for the national teams, USA Field Hockey was obligated to pay 40% of the costs associated with the turf replacement. That expenditure was spread over a three year timeframe (2013, 2014 and 2015) with a total anticipated impact of $524,000. That, unfortunately, was a huge hit to our continuing efforts to build a re-serve for this ever-growing organization.

The organization is continuing to grow with more events, a newly created sanctioning program for third party events and hockey activities and growth within existing programs. Additionally, the development programs of FUNdamental Field Hockey and You Go Girl are showing promise in providing more athletes for the future.

Our umpire community had a great 2013, with much growth and many improvements in umpire development. For the second year in a row, our umpiring community expanded by more than 10% throughout 2013. Our mem-bership saw a total of 73 new umpires, with 54 brand new members and 19 who switched from Player to Um-pire. Each membership region held at least two Umpire Academies in 2013, which mainly focused on younger umpires in college or high school. “Jump In: A Beginner’s Guide to Umpiring”, a learning how to umpire curricu-lum, was published and over 200 books have been distributed associated with trainings. The Umpire Rating Pro-cedure was developed and published, allowing all umpires to understand how to obtain and maintain a USA Field Hockey Rating. We are now able to use some of our events to evaluate for a Level 3 rating, the highest we pro-vide, using high performance and NCAA matches. The Tournament Rules Advisory Committee was developed to help with information as it relates to tournament rules, mainly within the club system. Our umpiring community also saw many more international appointments than we have seen in a long time, both on the umpire side and the technical side.

I think you will find the contents of this report to be encouraging generally as we make continual moves toward growth and are showing an upward trajectory in international competition.

sponsors

2013 was another record year for USA Field Hockey in terms of annual corporate partnershisp, reaching $1,200,000 commercially. With almost three dozen sponsorship agreements in place, we continue to grow our partnerships and form business relationships with more companies every year. As USA Field Hockey’s member-ship grew 9% in 2013, we can provide greater value to our sponsors and partners by exposing their brands to more field hockey enthusiast than ever before.

Four new sponsors were added to the USA Field hockey commercial family last year.

In 2013 we signed our most significant deal in our commercial history with Spooky Nook Sports in Lancaster, Pa. to become the “Home of Hockey” and a premier partner. With the new Home of Hockey nestled in the heart of field hockey talent in the U.S., Spooky Nook Sports will now be the main site of regional and national events. Spooky Nook Sports is one of the finest sports and entertainment complexes in North America. With world-class facilities, Spooky Nook Sports will now be able to provide USA Field hockey players with indoor courts, an uncov-ered outdoor field as well as a domed full-size pitch.

Our new “Official Team Physicians”, Orthopedic Associates of Lancaster (OAL) is conveniently located inside Spooky Nook Sports. With their outstanding team of surgeons and therapists and array of imaging equipment, they will be providing USA Field Hockey with the most trusted medical care in the Lancaster area.

AstroTurf, the most iconic name in field hockey turf brands, has provided USA Field Hockey with nothing but the best playing surfaces for both of the fields at Spooky Nook, as well as around the country. AstroTurf is dedicated to providing fields that will allow for the highest level of performance for USA Field Hockey event participants.

Gatorade, the leader in sports drinks with over 40 years of studying the best athletes in the world, provides fuel to our athletes at the point of sweat during many of our annual tournaments. From energy drinks to thirst quenchers and protein shakes, Gatorade ensures USA Field Hockey athletes of all levels are fueled with optimal sports nutri-tion.

With the addition of these four new partners, they join the many long time partners of USA Field Hockey who have supported not only our organization, but our sport for many years. A number of our sponsors, such as CranBarry, YOLO and our housing partner JBS, have been with USA Field Hockey for over 15 years. We take great pride in the each relationship we have built with our sponsors and hope to continue these partnerships for many more years with our current and new sponsors.

The growth in the organization as well as the growth of commercial sponsorships over the past year has led to a new role at USA Field Hockey. Katie Naughton, now the Commercial Manager, is responsible for maintaining our current sponsorships as well as seeking new ones. Katie grew up in New Hampshire and played field hockey since she was in middle school. As a young member of USA Field Hockey, she has been through the USA Field Hockey pipeline from Futures, indoor tournaments, festival and the junior national team. She eventually commit-ted to becoming a Hawkeye and attended the University of Iowa where she also played field hockey.

USA Field Hockey continues to perform well in comparison to other top revenue generating field hockey nations. With the help and support of our sponsors and partners, we are able to hold world-class field hockey events and have extremely competitive men’s and women’s national teams. We are extremely thankful for our commercial partners.

USA Field Hockey’s Futures program represents the beginning of the Olympic pipeline. Futures continues to be the premier USA Field Hockey athlete de-velopment and showcasing program in the U.S., bridging the gap between playing for your county and playing for your country. Nearly all of the current U.S. Women’s National Team members have gone through the Futures program on their journey to achieving Olympic dreams. In the collegiate realm in 2013, 84% of NCAA student-athletes partici-pated in Futures.

Futures participation levels increased across the country again in 2013. Thou-sands of athletes competed across the nine Futures regions at Regional Fu-tures Tournaments for an opportunity to show off their skills at the 2013 National Futures Championship (NFC). A total of 680 athletes, approximately 8% of the total number of Futures participants, participated in the NFC in Virginia Beach, Va.

Olympic Day, a United States Olympic Committee initiative to celebrate ‘Olympism’, was celebrated at the 2013 NFC with an athlete celebration dinner, celebrating athlete’s accomplishments and featuring Olympians who signed autographs and posed for photos.

Extending from Futures, the Futures Elite Academies and Futures Elite Championship had a successful sopho-more year. The top Futures athletes in each region train at Futures Elite Acade-mies in the hope of being selected as one of the top 76 high school athletes to compete in the Futures Elite Champi-onship.

membership

In 2013, membership was on the rise and specifically in the Atlantic region of the country with a 32% increase in the field hockey community in the states of Connecticut and Rhode Island. Not only does USA Field Hockey care deeply that the field hockey community is growing and expanding in region, age, gender and diversity, we are also committed to providing benefits of USA Field Hockey membership that soar higher than membership num-bers can achieve. In 2013, USA Field Hockey welcomed additional staff resources in the membership depart-ment with primary emphasis on providing members great value for their membership to include valuable mem-bership benefits, premier events and excellent customer service. Discounts to our online store were also a wel-comed-back tradition to our members during their birthday month.

Multiple USA Field Hockey initiatives were to thank for the bump in membership numbers including FUNdamental Field Hockey, You Go Girl, Futures and interactive social media marketing – targeted to the Facebook, Instagram and Twitter-fueled field hockey youth. Additional contributors were the Junior Premier Indoor League, Big Apple Memorial 6-A-Side Tournament, Harrow Cup, Harrow Challenge, 4Goals Cup and the Howard County Show-case, all private-sector events that found success in USA Field Hockey’s Event Sanctioning program. With our sanctioning program on the rise, the field hockey audience is expanding and will surely lead to growth in our membership and events portfolio for years to come.

The U.S. Men’s National Program continued to grow throughout 2013. With an increase in time with athletes with-in the Centralized Training Program, the allocation of re-sources provided by the United States Olympic Committee and the long term pragmatic approach to increased perfor-mance over time will see the program increase its profile within the U.S. and FIH.

The performance over the course of the year allowed for a great number of players to gain international experience cul-minating in the Pan American Cup. The players performed admirably over the course of the year with the highlight being the semi-final of the Pan American Cup in a tantalizingly close match where the gap was only a 1-0 scoreline in favor of Canada. This result, as well as the series win against Chile and moments of elite performance against Australia and South Africa with a young U.S. squad, proved that the future is bright for Team USA

WORLD LEAGUE ROUND 2 February 27 – March 5

After winning the World League Round 1 Tournament at the Olympic Training Center, Chula Vista, Calif. in late 2012, the team headed to Brazil for the 2nd leg of the tournament. The games were very competitive against teams mostly ranked ahead of Team USA. A highlight for the U.S. was a tight match against 12th ranked team in the world at the time, South Africa. The squad fought diligently through five match-es, but only walked away with one victory..

USA vs AUSTRALIA July 6 – 14

The U.S. headed to Australia to gain experience playing in one of the strongest hockey nations in the world. Victorian Institute of Sport and Combined State Institute Team provid-ed exactly that. Team USA showed obvious improvements throughout the tour providing a strong platform to build upon going into the remainder of the year.

USA vs CHILE August 5 – 6

As final preparation came to a close before the Pan Am Cup, the opportunity to fine tune and sharpen play came in the form of two matches against close rival Chile. Team USA walked away with a draw and a victory in the series. Winning the second match 3-0 was a strong start towards the Pan Am Cup.

PAN AMERICAN CUP August 11 – 17

Team USA showed much promise in Brampton, Canada, proving they are very close to the top of North America. A semi-final loss to the Canadian squad ranked well ahead of the U.S. exemplified their ability. Playing the last two and a half games with one player out due to injury showed in the final game, however with such a young squad being exposed to the International level this year the future is encouraging.

With a new Head Coach in Craig Parnham, a new Director of Performance Science in David Hamilton and a brand new culture built around accountability and responsibility for one-self and teammates, 2013 marked a year of transition and growth for the Women’s National Team. The 30-player 2013-14 roster featured 12 Olympians, including four two-time Olympians and nine brand new faces.

International competitions throughout 2013 allowed for the team to work on chemistry and tactics while getting ac-quainted with new coaching, training and playing styles. The highlight of the year occurred during the Pan American Cup in Mendoza, Argentina, where the squad put up a strong fight against Argentina to secure a silver medal and put themselves in position to later qualify for the 2014 Rabobank Hockey World Cup.

2013 – 2014 Women’s National Team Torrie Albini (Escondido, Cali.), Megan Beamesderfer (Iowa City, Iowa), Teresa Benvenuti (Morristown, N.J.),

The U.S. Women’s Field Hockey Team advanced to World League Round 3 after an authoritative 6-0 victory over Trini-dad and Tobago in the final at the International Hockey Fed-eration’s World League Round 2 tournament in Rio de Janei-ro, Brazil. Team USA finished with a near-perfect record, de-feating Brazil, Uruguay, Chile and Trinidad and Tobago and drawing Scotland in regulation.

FOUR NATIONS – April 10-22

The U.S. travelled to New Zealand from April 10-22 to take on higher ranked opponents Argentina, New Zealand and Korea in two separate Four Nations tournaments. The tour was an opportunity for the developmental squad to earn in-ternational experience and included a total of eight high-intensity matches.

WOMEN’S NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP – May 23-29

Eighty-four of the top field hockey athletes in the country took to the pitch in Norfolk, Va. for the opportunity to com-pete for bragging rights and show off their skills in front of the U.S. Women’s National Team Coaching Staff. WNC is the annual, premier domestic event for collegiate and post-collegiate athletes and marks the culmination of regional high

performance training. After the week-long excitement, Parnham named the 2013-14 U.S. Women’s Senior and De-velopmental National Squads.

WORLD LEAGUE SEMI FINAL – June 22-30

Team USA travelled to Chiswick, Great Britain to compete at the World League Semi Final among the top teams in the world. After a challenging bout of pool play, the U.S. fell to Australia in the quarterfinals, but was able to defeat Spain to capture a 5th place finish. Their final placement put them in a promising position to qualify for the 2014 Rabobank Hockey World Cup.

PAN AMERICAN CUP – September 19-29

During Team USA’s Pan American Cup journey in Mendoza, Argentina, the nineteen-member squad displayed monumen-tal growth and determination throughout the tournament. Although Argentina secured the final win with a 1-0 victory in front of a boisterous home crowd, Team USA played with intensity for the full game, took home the silver and earned a coveted spot at the 2014 Rabobank Hockey World Cup held in The Hague, Netherlands.

The U.S. finished first in pool play of the Pan American Cup by defeating Mexico 6-0, Chile 5-1 and Uruguay 6-1 earning them a spot in the semi-final match versus Canada. Team USA played with energy and passion for the entire semi-final match earning the squad a 4-0 victory and a place in the fi-nal. For the fifth consecutive year, the U.S. met the host country, Argentina in the championship round. The U.S. made valiant efforts but the team was unable to convert scoring opportunities into goals.

sport development

In 2013, USA Field Hockey once again committed growing the game of field hockey in the United States. Lead by the Sport Development Team and carried out by members and fans across the country, the mission to expose the sport and increase participation has never been more attainable.

The sport development flagship program, FUNdamental Field Hockey, had another fantastic year of growth in 2013. With over 200 new programs signing up and retaining 85% of pro-gram from 2012, there were over 400 Fundamental Field Hockey programs happening across the country. That’s nearly 10,000 sticks and balls in action all the way from Hon-olulu, Hawaii to Rochester, New York.

Last year, the Sport Development team and Harrow Sports also introduced additional equipment sizes available for the program. FUNdamental Field Hockey now grants sticks rang-ing from 28” to 36”, so everyone can play.

As we all know, the growth at the youth level is imperative to the continued success on both the amateur and international stage. USA Field Hockey is committed to providing more playing opportunities at the youth level and this was evident in the addition of U12 and U14 divisions at both the National Indoor Tournament and the Na-tional Hockey Festival in 2013.

The success of Fundamental Field Hockey did not go unno-ticed; the initiative was one of six NGB programs to present at the United States Olympic Committee’s Multi Sport Coun-cil in Colorado Springs. The exposure to leaders of YMCAs, Boys and Girls Clubs, and youth sport administrators opened up many potential avenues for the growth of field hockey in the United States. One of those potential avenues exists in the physical education and after school system. This year the Sport Development team introduced field hockey as a ‘new and exciting’ alternative to hundreds of physical education teachers and youth sport administrators through conven-tions, professional development days and clinics. The re-sponse was overwhelming.

In addition to youth development, USA Field Hockey also continued its commitment to ‘Grow the Game’ in several oth-er divisions, including boys and men. 2013 saw promising growth in male participation, but the mission continues to expose the sport to more young men across the country.

The addition of male clinics (many at little or no cost) has been a key factor, as well as the opportunities for participa-tion at existing USA Field Hockey events. The 2013 National Indoor Tournament hosted an exciting boys division in Rich-mond, while well-attended male clinics at National Hockey Festival inspired us all.

USA Field Hockey is also committed to exposing the sport in non-traditional areas in an attempt to diversify our member-ship. From urban Philadelphia to rural Iowa, it is the goal of the Sport Development Team to allow any and all an oppor-tunity to try our sport. One program that aids in the mission is You Go Girl. You Go Girl, which launched in the spring of 2013, is a sport for social change program that empowers urban NCAA field hockey teams to expose the sport in their

community. The program part-ners current collegiate student athletes with local young wom-en in at-risk communities to teach field hockey, character development, healthy lifestyles and the value of education.

Furthermore, USA Field Hockey is committed to offering more playing opportunities at the post-collegiate and adult level for both recreation and competitive play. By providing resources for league organization and tourna-ment sanctioning, in addition to adding adult division to existing tournaments, it is our hope to make participation in this sport a life-long affair. That participa-

tion may also come in the form of coaching, umpiring or ad-ministering the game, so development in each of those areas is equally as crucial. The Sport Development Team has worked closely with both USA Field Hockey’s National Um-pire Director and National Coaching Director to assist in the development and sustainability of new umpires and coaches alike.

Growing the game is not a simple task and surely not some-thing USA Field Hockey can complete without the help of several others. That list includes our wonderful 2013 sport development sponsors and partners: Proctor and Gamble, Harrow Sports, CranBarry Field Hockey, Partnership for A Healthier America, Let’s Move and the Horner Foundation. It also includes each of our amazing members who continue to coach, umpire and play the game of field hockey. Together, we can and will continue to ‘Grow the Game’.

In our second year of fundraising, we continue to be overwhelmed by the amount of people who have shown their support for USA Field Hockey. In a goal to increase cultivation and involvement, we exceeded our expectations and continued momentum as we increased the number of dollars and donors for 2013. Thank you to all that have made the investment and commitment toward our mission to Grow the Game this year.

NATIONAL INDOOR TOURNAMENT |Richmond and Virginia Beach, Va. | March 1-10

Under-19 Girls and Boys: March 1-3, Richmond

Under-14 and Under-16 Girls: March 8-10, Virginia Beach

Hot off the bench from qualifying at an Indoor Qualifier, 112 U19 teams kicked off the 2013 National Indoor Tournament, presented by Yolo Sportswear, in Richmond, VA at the Richmond Convention Center. Not long after the U19 girl’s division play begin did spectators gravitate to-ward the rush of boys and men on the courts. Eight full male teams de-fied the traditionally female dominated event and put on an amazing hockey show.

“I think by showcasing boys at the National Indoor Tournament, we are starting to spread the word of men's field hockey in the U.S.,” said Cord Chipman, Men’s Under-21 division athlete at the 2013 National Indoor Tournament. “As a player, I appreciate having a venue where I can play against other male field hockey players. I believe that by USA Field Hock-ey continuing to showcase the boys at the National Indoor Tournament and other national hockey tournaments, men's hockey in the U.S. will continue to see a rapid growth.”

The excitement followed the weekend after in Virginia Beach, VA at the Virginia Beach Convention Center with U14 and U16 girls competing in high gear and ending the indoor hockey season on the right note.

The International Polo Club in Palm Beach County, Florida once again hosted the 2013 National Hockey Festival, sponsored by CranBarry. Over 200 recruiting college coaches attended the event to recruit the best and most talented athletes our sport has to offer. The U14 girls, 7v7 division added in May proved to be an exciting improvement to the tournament. The additional 42 teams brought the Festival to new heights in 2013 with a whopping total of 254 teams in attendance. The 4-day Thanksgiving Day celebration has an economic impact of approximately 4.5 million dollars to the host community and has become a fortified tradition in the field hockey community. What started years ago as an informal field hockey gathering of a few adult teams has multiplied into the largest field hockey tournament of its kind in the world.
