BASKETBALL PICKED TO FINISH 3RD IN THE OVC WEST DIVISION The Panther women’s basketball team was picked to finish third in the Ohio Valley Conference’s West Division as voted on by conference head coaches and sports information directors.

UT Martin, the three-time defending OVC Tournament Champions, earned 22 first-place votes and was tabbed to win the west division. SIUE earned two first-place votes and was selected to finish second in the division followed by EIU and Murray State. Southeast Missouri was picked fifth while Austin Peay was sixth in the poll, respectively.

Tennessee Tech was picked to win the east division, earning 12 first-place votes, followed by Belmont (nine, first-place votes) and Eastern Kentucky (three, first-place votes). Morehead State, Tennessee State and Jacksonville State rounded out the bottom of the east division.

UT Martin, Morehead State and Tennessee Tech all had two players named to the 10-player preseason All-OVC Team. Jasmine Newsome was tabbed the preseason player of the year.

2013-14 BASKETBALL SCHEDULEEastern Illinois women’s basketball will host two in-state rivals along with regional rival Indiana State as part of the Panthers 2013-14 home schedule.

The season tips off on the road on Friday, Nov. 8 at Evansville. The Panthers then return to Lantz Arena for their home opener on Nov. 12 against Indiana State. The first week of the season concludes with a road trip to Saint Louis on Nov. 15.

A highlight on the schedule for women’s basketball fans comes early in the season as the Panthers host Loyola-Chicago on Nov. 21. The Ramblers are coached by former WNBA All-Star Sheryl Swoopes. The Panthers are coached by former WNBA All-Star Debbie Black as the two will now face off as head coaches of NCAA Division I programs after their teams battled in the WNBA ranks.

The annual Kid’s Day Game will feature Western Illinois with a 12 p.m. (Noon) tip off in Lantz Arena on Monday, Nov. 25.

“Our non-conference schedule is competitive. We are fortunate to play in a tournament in Florida against two good teams. Overall, it’s a good mixture of away games and tournaments that will get us ready for the OVC Tournament at the end of the season.”

- Head Coach Debbie Black

The Panthers will play in the first of two in-season tournaments over Thanksgiving weekend when they travel to the UMKC Plaza Lights Tournament on Nov. 29-30. EIU will also play in the North

Florida Holiday Tournament on Dec. 20-21. EIU’s other two non-conference December games are at Bradley on Dec. 4 and at Southern Illinois on Dec. 16.

Ohio Valley Conference play opens at home for the defending champions with three straight games right after the Christmas Holiday. Tennessee State opens the OVC slate on Dec. 28 followed by Morehead State on Jan. 4 and Eastern Kentucky on Jan. 6.

EIU will play the three other OVC East Division opponents on the road visiting Jacksonville State and Tennessee Tech in mid-January. EIU closes out crossover play on Feb. 22 at Belmont.

EIU’s first OVC West Division game is Jan. 18 at home against Austin Peay. The Panthers final home game of the season is Feb. 27 against UT Martin. The final regular season game is at SIU Edwardsville on March 1. The OVC West Division teams include Austin Peay, Murray State, Southeast Missouri, SIUE and UT Martin, with each team playing home and home with EIU this season.

The OVC Tournament will once again be played in Nashville, Tenn., at the Municipal Auditorium on March 5-8.

2013-14SEASON

PREVIEW

Page 11: 2013-14 EIU Women's Basketball Media Guide

“I’m very excited about the upcoming season. This is my first year (as head coach) and I love the university and it’s tradition of winning. We are going to strive to be as competitive as we can be.”

- Head Coach Debbie Black

2013-14 SEASON NOTESThe Panthers return seven players from last year’s team that captured the OVC Regular-Season Title, posting a 20-12 overall record and a 12-4 mark in conference action. EIU also advanced to its fourth consecutive postseason tournament and posted a 60-58 win over Missouri in the opening round of the WNIT – the school’s first postseason victory.

Junior forward Sabina Oroszova is the top returning scorer and rebounder for EIU, averaging 5.9 points and seven rebounds per game a year ago. Katlyn Payne made 28 starts last season and averaged 5.7 points per game while making 48 three pointers.

EIU also returns two other veteran players in Jordyne Crunk and Taryn Olson. Crunk averaged 5.8 points per game and connected on 85 percent of her free throw attempts while Olson chipped in 2.7 points and 2.7 rebounds per game.

EIU has five newcomers in Erica Brown, Georgia Danos, Aaliyah Gaines, Kaycee Kallenberger and Arnisha Thomas. Brown helped Nashville Community HS capture the IHSA 2A State Title last season while Gaines helped Canterbury HS (Fort Wayne, Ind.) win back-to-back IHSAA Class A State Titles. Danos and Kallenberger both earned all-conference honors as seniors and Thomas averaged 19.3 points and 12.1 rebounds per game at Illinois Valley C.C. last season, helping the team post a 22-9 overall record.

EIU opens the regular season on Friday, Nov. 8 at Evansville under the direction of first-year head coach Debbie Black. She joins the Panthers after a successful stint as an assistant coach at Ohio State under Jim Foster that saw the Buckeyes win six Big Ten Conference Championships in eight seasons.

“I like the fire, the competitive spirit about this team. They all have a shot to start as we had a lot of starters graduated and I think that brings out the best in our players.”

- Head Coach Debbie Black

eferencing a children’s book about herself, - Tiny, Terrific Debbie Black – Debbie Black talked about the story of a young, undersized girl achieving her dream of first playing basketball and then coaching basketball. The next chapter in that continuing life story began on May 16 as Black was hired as the sixth head women’s basketball coach in the NCAA Division I history of Eastern Illinois University and eighth since the inception of the program.

Black was welcomed to Eastern Illinois as an afternoon press conference in the Baker/Warmoth Hall of Champions in Lantz Arena where she was joined by EIU President Dr. William Perry, Vice President of Student Affairs Dr. Dan Nadler and EIU Director of Athletics Barbara Burke.

“Debbie Black has won at all levels of basketball,” said Burke. “During her interview she displayed an energy, passion and drive for coaching the game that will keep Eastern Illinois as one of the top programs not only in the Ohio Valley Conference but in the region.”

A former assistant coach at Ohio State University, Black has worked and played for some of the most successful coaches in women’s basketball.

Most recently Black was part of a successful run for the Buckeyes women’s program under head coach Jim Foster that saw Ohio State win six Big Ten Conference Championships in eight seasons. The program made seven consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances with her as a member of the staff including advancing to the NCAA Sweet 16 in 2009 and 2011.

In addition to helping coach successful teams, Black has been instrumental in the development of player success. Coaching guards at Ohio State her players won four Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year honors and one Big Ten Player of the Year honor. Multiple players have gone on to professional careers both in the WNBA and overseas including Ohio State players Samantha Prahalis and Tayler Hill, each of whom was selected in the first round of the WNBA draft.

“I opened the press conference telling you about the book that is used in third grade classes as a source for motivation. That story ends with me being an assistant coach but my story continues today with this head coaching opportunity at Eastern Illinois,” said Black. “I always knew my story would continue because I know my character and my work ethic. I never quit, never stop. I believe you have to work hard and give it your all everyday. That is they way I played and that is the way I coach.”

Black’s ties to Jim Foster go back to her playing days at St. Joseph’s University in Philadelphia. As a player she helped lead the Hawks to four straight NCAA Tournament appearances. Black is a 1988 graduate of Saint Joseph’s and a member of the Philadelphia Sports Hall of Fame.

Black’s first coaching position was as an assistant for Foster at Vanderbilt during the 1999-2000 season when the team made the NCAA Tournament advancing to the second round.

PANTHER WOMEN’S BASKETBALLAs a player Black played more than ten seasons at the professional level. She began her career in the WNBL playing in Tasmania. She was the 15th overall selection in the 1999 WNBA Draft by the Utah Starzz. She was named the WNBA Defensive Player of the Year while a member of the Miami Sol and ended her professional career in 2005 as a member of the Connecticut Sun.

All told she has been part of 34 consecutive winning seasons of basketball both as a player and a coach. Nicknamed “The Pest” during her playing days, Black is the only women’s professional player to ever record a quadruple double with 10 points, 14 rebounds, 12 assists and 10 steals.

“President Perry mentioned two things earlier in this press conference. 1.) That we want to compete for championships. 2.) We want to do it with people of integrity,” added Black. “Eastern Illinois is located in a great community and great people give you the opportunity to do both of those things. Compete for championships and do it with integrity.”

Eastern Illinois won its second Ohio Valley Conference regular season championship last year advancing to the program’s fourth straight post-season appearance. EIU beat Missouri in the first round of the WNIT to record the program’s first post-season victory.

What They Are Saying About Coach Black...

Kim Foley was hired as the first member of Debbie Black’s Eastern Illinois staff as she joined the Panthers program as the associate head coach in July of 2013.

Foley has served the last three seasons as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at Lafayette College. While at Lafayette, Foley has helped bring in recruiting classes that have featured three straight years with a player earning Patriot League All-Rookie Team honors including the Rookie of the Year Award winner Emily Homan in 2012. This past season Foley helped coach the program to signature wins over Big East member Pittsburgh and Atlantic-10 member Fordham.

Prior to her time at Lafayette, Foley spent one season as an assistant coach at Colgate for the 2009-10 season. She helped the team finish in fourth place in the Patriot League after a last place finish the season prior to her arrival on staff. She coached Jhazmine Lynch the league’s Rookie of the Year award winner in 2010.

From 1996-2002, Foley was the head coach at Central Connecticut State. During her second season as head coach the team improved from two wins to 17 wins transitioning from the Mid-Continent Conference to the Northeast Conference. The turnaround is the fourth best in NCAA history as the club finished second in the NEC standings after being predicted to finish last in the preseason poll. Three members of Foley’s first recruiting class earned NEC All-Rookie honors. During her six year tenure as head coach, Foley coached four All-NEC performers with the team always excelling in the classroom. She was the first coach in school history to organize and implement an International Tour for her program.

Foley began her coaching career as an assistant coach at Drexel in 1992 coaching three seasons with the Dragons program. She was a key contributor on the staff that helped Drexel reach the conference tournament semifinals. She then spent one season as an assistant coach at Central Connecticut State before taking over the head coaching reigns in July of 1996.

Foley played collegiate basketball at Saint Joseph’s University being named the Jesuit College National Player of the Year as a senior in 1989. She was a Basketball Writers Association All-American in 1989 and was inducted into Saint Joseph’s Athletic Hall of Fame in 2002. In addition to the Saint Joseph’s Hall of Fame, Foley has also been inducted into the Philadelphia Big 5 Hall of Fame, New England Basketball Hall of Fame and Peabody High School Hall of Fame.

Following graduation in 1989, Foley played professional basketball for three seasons in Australia. She was the Australian WNBL Defensive Player of the Year in 1991 while helping her team win the country’s National Championship.

Gwen Burton was hired as the second member of Debbie Black’s Eastern Illinois staff as she joined the Panthers program as an assistant coach in July of 2013.

Burton is no stranger to the state of Illinois and its recruiting circles having spent the last 10 seasons as an assistant coach at Chicago State. While with the Cougars program she served as the team’s recruiting coordinator since 2005 helping coach several players that captured all-conference accolades. In the past few seasons five players earned All-Great West Conference honors including 2011 Player of the Year Courtney Waldon, 2011 Sixth Woman of the Year Caila Desroches and Tressa Beckel a WBI All-Tournament team member in 2011.

Coaching guards at Chicago State, Burton helped that position group thrive in her tenure. Waldon finished her career as the program’s career leading scorer with more than 1,500 points while also ranking first in career 3-pointers made. Janay Dockery, a guard from Detroit, Mich., ranked 13th in the nation in steals in 2013 while going over the 1,000 point mark for her career.

In addition to helping mold young players at the guard position, Burton has helped to develop several players who have moved onto play professionally with players in Poland and Australia. At Chicago State she helped the program reach the WBI Tournament in 2011, the first post-season appearance for the Cougars.

Prior to working at CSU, Burton served as an assistant coach for the Grand Rapids (Mich.) Blizzards of the now-defunct National Women’s Basketball League (NWBL) where she was in charge of scouting, travel itineraries and guard development. While working with the Blizzards, Burton served as head coach of Marygrove College, a member of the United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA) in Detroit.

Burton’s other collegiate coaching experience comes as an assistant coach at NAIA member Michigan-Dearborn from 1998-01.

She began her coaching career as an assistant coach at Bishop Borgess HS in Redford, Mich. She helped lead the team to its first Catholic Youth Organization Championship. Burton later coached one season at Martin Luther King HS in Detroit where she helped the team reach the Michigan Class A state tournament semifinals.

Burton played two seasons at Louisville helping the program capture the Metro Conference Championship and advance to the NCAA Tournament. She was named to the Student-Athlete Honor Roll at Louisville. She began her college career at Detroit-Mercy transferring for one season to play at Allen County Community College under the late and former Oklahoma State head women’s basketball coach Kurt Budke. At ACCC she set the school record for 3-pointers made (120), averaging 16 points per game. Allen County earned its first national ranking that season finishing No. 14 in the NJCAA poll.

Burton graduated from Louisville in 1995 and holds a Masters degree from Everest University in 2009.
