With the technology advances in computer diagnostics built in vehicles today it is not uncommon for trailer electrics to interfere with such computer systems. Most European vehicles emit pulse current for their lighting which is sometimes not compatible with the LED lighting used on trailers, as they need constant current to operate. Common errors include computer system faults such as flickering symbols on dashboards and flashing external lights. Ark’s range of ECU Harness eliminates such problems, suitable for most vehicles but not suitable for vehicles running CANbus systems.

Ark Corporation carries a wide selection of high quality cast iron trailer hubs in galvanised and plain steel finish. Our range includes non-braked Lazy hubs and braked hubs in the form of Disc Rotors and Hub Drums. All our hub kits come complete with seals, dust caps, stud nuts, bearings and pre-pressed studs and bearing cups. We also supply a large range of replacement parts so whether you are replacing your entire hub or re-building the old one, it is very important to use the proper size replacement parts.

Below are just a few key points to consider when selecting and replacing your hub.

1. Determine the number and size of studs.

2. Work out the stud pattern, this is done by measuring the PCD (Pitch Circle Diameter) on your hub. Refer to the diagram, at the bottom of the next page (page 85).

3. Determine the Inner and Outer bearing size. Most bearings are stamped with a reference number that can be used to easily identify its inside diameter. Another easy way is to measure your axle’s size i.e 39mm Round or 40mm Square axles generally use LM Bearings (Holden) and 45mm Square axles use SL Bearings (Ford).

Hubs can be running numerous bearing combinations so it is important to determine your bearing size accurately. Below are just a few combinations:-

• Tapered Hub – This is the most common hub utilised where the hub will run on the axle with a large inner and small outer bearing.

• Parallel Hub – This hub is utilised where a larger carrying capacity is needed for that axle setup. The hub runs on the axle with a large inner and outer bearing.

When rebuilding or servicing your existing hub body, it is important to do the following:-

• Check that all your studs and nuts are intact with clean threads free from burs.

• Bearings!! Regular maintenance on bearings is essential. When replacing the bearing in your hub remember to replace the inner and outer races or cups. Even if the cups don’t show sign of wear they should be replaced to maintain proper bearing tolerance. Thoroughly grease the bearings by working grease around rollers then pack the hub interior before installing a new grease seal in the back of hub

• Check that the rubbers on your grease seals are intact and free from tears, these seals play an integral role of your bearing set up and should not be neglected.

• Ensure dust cap is intact as this prevents water and dust getting into your bearings, its best to utilise a pair of bearing buddies as these units maintain a good level of grease in your bearings and it allows easy top up of bearings with a grease gun.

• Check axle to ensure it is free from burs, cracks and any sign of deformation, if need be replace your axle. Refer to Axle – How To Guide (page 99).

• Bearing grease quality is another important consideration, especially for boat trailers that are constantly submerged in water after a long trip. Marine trailer bearing grease provides outstanding water washout and excellent corrosion protection caused by salt water.

Axles: How to measure trailer axlesArk Corporation carries a wide range of Beam axles, Stub axles and axle accessories in various sizes, ratings and finishes such as black painted or galvanised.

When fitting new or replacing your existing axle, it is vital to consider your trailers GVM (Gross Vehicle Mass) which is the maximum weight of the trailer including its load. Fitting the incorrect axle to your trailer can lead to overloading your axle capacity, causing stress and fatigue to the axle which can lead to metal failure and potential fatal consequences on the road, so getting it right is vital!

Once you have your trailers GVM you can determine whether you need to run a single, dual or tri axle setup to accommodate the load. To work out your axle capacities for dual or tri-axle setup, simply divide the GVM over the amount of axles.

When building a new trailer or refurbishing an old trailer with new wheels, the following measurements need to be considered to correctly measure the axle required for your trailer:

“A” - Trailer Chassis width - Measure to outer most edges mm = mm+

“B” - Mudguard Width - Measure and include any mudguard spacers if used mm x 2 = mm+

”C” - Spacing between Chassis and tyre - Minimum spacing 25mm mm x 2 = mm+

Hub Nose - Using Ark hubs with tapered LM or SL bearings 55 mm x 2 = 110mm-

“D” - Wheel offset - Measured to outer hub face as per instructions below mm x 2 = mm-

Spacing between outer mudguard and tyre 10 mm = 10mm

“E” - Beam axle size required tip to tip in millimetres (-/+5mm) mm

Alternatively if you have your outer hub face measurement the following measurements need to be considered:

“F” - Outer hub face measurement mm = mm+

Hub Nose - Using Ark hubs with tapered LM and SL bearings 55 mm x 2 = 110mm

Beam axle size required tip to tip in millimetres (-/+5mm) mm

Measuring your wheel offset – To measure your wheel offset for Ark’s axle formula please follow the steps below:

• Inflate tyre to correct PSI as per manufacturers specifications.• Lay the rim and tyre combination face down on level ground.• Measure the distance from the ground to the upper most face of the rim,

this is where the hub face meets the rim.

IMPORTANT: Ensure the tyre utilised for your trailer fits within the mudguards and has a minimum clearance of 25mm from the chassis.

you need to start off by matching your existing spring i.e shackle spring (eye-eye) or slipper spring (eye-slipper). Once you have matched your spring type, the next few points need to be considered:

• Number of leaves, each layer of spring metal is considered a leaf.• Thickness of leaves.• Inside diameter of the bushing, our slipper springs use a ½” bush while the shackle springs

use a 9/16” bush.• Length of spring – Measure from the centre of the front bushing in a straight line to the centre of the

rear bushing for shackle springs or measure from the centre of front bushing in a straight line to the end of spring for slipper springs.

• Spring camber – Rest the spring on the floor upside down, measure the distance between the floor and the centre spring bolt.

• For dual and tri-axle setups, you need to determine your axle spacing to accommodate your wheel sizes. Once this is determined you can work out your spring centres to determine whether you need to utilise centre or off-centre spring bolts or a combination of the two.

1. ChargingRecovers a flat battery - Charges the battery until it reaches 12.5V

2. BulkingTops up battery for extra voltage to 13.8V

3. BoostingPeak charge for maximum performance. Maintains the battery voltage at 13.8V for 5 hours to boost battery capacity.

4. NormalizingAllows the battery to consolidate after boosting. Charger ceases charging to allow the battery to rest while allowing voltage to normalize at 12.8V.

5. ConditioningMaintains performance and prolongs battery life. The battery is continually monitored and the charging current is automatically adjusted to maintain battery voltage at 12.8V for a period of 500 hours.

6. Re-awakenExercising the battery and avoiding sulphation build up. After 500 hours, the charger cycle will automatically return to Step 1, maintaining the battery at peak condition.
