NOVEMBER LETTER FROM ALL SAINTS’
Remembrance Day is soon upon us, and already the poppy is being worn on jackets and
displayed on cars. But why the poppy ? Why not any other red flower ? The poppy has its
origin in the 19th century when the destruction brought by the Napoleonic wars turned the
bare land in to fields of red poppies growing around the bodies of fallen soldiers. Then again
in 1914 when the fields of Northern France and Flanders were ravaged as the First World
War raged through the heart of Europe. After the war the battlefields were left to rest and
before long the wild flowers grew, including many poppies. Their bright red colour reminded
people of bloodshed and the sacrifice by millions of brave soldiers of their lives. So the pop-
py came to represent the immeasurable sacrifice and lasting memorial to all those who died
in WW1 and all later wars and conflicts. Each part of the poppy has a meaning to it . The black centre reminds us that wars often start
with human greed and injustice. The red petals help us to remember the suffering and blood
shed in war. The leaves remind us how fragile life is - that it can be blown away as easily as
leaves fall from the trees and die in Autumn. The stem helps us to remember that war is not
just about great armies and powerful weapons. It is about ordinary folk who gave their lives
fighting to bring peace and freedom. So the poppy parts mostly remind us of something sad.
However, God's love is far more powerful than any evil in the world. Therefore we can also
see the petals as the blood of Christ shed on the cross, giving us freedom and the gift of
Eternal Life. The leaf, a symbol in the book of Revelation where we are told, `God will heal
all wounds`. The poppy in full bloom tells us that however difficult things may be and
however tragic the war, hope can bloom again when we allow God's love to transform the
dark moments in our lives where conflicts begin. So let's wear our poppies with these things in mind and with pride for those who paid with
their lives to give us the freedom and peace we enjoy. Let us also pray constantly for the
brave men and women of the armed forces who continue to fight for justice and peace
throughout the world.

Junior Church News
Sheep made from popcorn ! Whatever next ? Well puppets telling
the story of Lazarus using a huge pile of conkers as hell.
We like to mix up the activities to tell the stories form the bible
and to learn about God and his kingdom on earth.
Junior church meets during the service (in school term time) at 0945 hrs. We use the fresh
and inviting Garden room and the garden for our activities. Those activities include painting
and crafts, drama and story telling, singing and music, games and experiments !
When there is not a session there is a new area of the church that has been made over for the
youngsters with games and activities in a colourful environment.

Scout Report In September, as part of the Group Diamond Celebration,
Paul Savill arranged a free visit to Osborne House. Many thanks to English Heritage for a good tour of the House
and Grounds, on a showery Sunday by a party of 25 Beavers,
Cubs, Scouts, Parents and Friends. The following Saturday there was good weather for the Harvest Festival in Spencers Field. Group Members helped on the stalls which included Welley Boot throwing and some had a go at making Scarecrows. At the end of September,9 Scouts took part in the Light Beam Combat Game of Headhunters at Corf. This now takes place every year. Peter Harris G.S.L. tel. 825959

Land adjacent to 44 Worsley Road, Gurnard. The proposal to build 15 homes next door to Gurnard’s Village Hall was approved 5 votes to 2
in support of officers recommendation by the IW Council Planning Committee.
Many thanks to those who made representations, particularly to Carolyn Sibley and Martha
James who spoke on behalf of the Gurnard Village Hall Association and Parish Council.
During the meeting additional conditions were added which included construction of the new
road before commencement, whilst a further condition requiring sequential development for the
affordable homes. Once confirmed, these will be posted online.
Rights Of Way issues. The Forestry Commission and Police are supporting an initiative where Horse Riders can ride
between Hillis Gate and Forest Road through Parkhurst Forest. This would enable riders to
access the Tennyson Trail and West Wight from Cowes, Gurnard and Northwood.
The Local Access Forum are also exploring opportunities to upgrade the footpath between
Mark’s Corner and Whitehouse Road, Porchfield.Gurnard
Coastal Path Diversion. Proposals to divert footpath CS16, will not progress following the receipt of a 180 named
petition, by Gurnard’s Parish Council at its September Meeting Given the reasons outlined by objectors (such as loss of the most scenic stretch of this path) and
contested land ownership issues (only the owners of Crocker’s have a section of this footpath
registered). Firstly, thank you to the many residents who contacted me concerning this! Secondly, I feel I must say sorry to Lynda and Graham Smith, owners of Crocker’s over any
confusion relating to their land ownership Local Services: Have Your Say! A public meeting is being held 7pm, Thursday 31st October at Northwood House, Cowes to
listen to residents’ views on where future savings could be made on local public Services. If you
unable to attend, there is an online survey which features on iwight.com. Giving Blood Following representations received, I’m now able to confirm that Blood Donors will once again

be able to donate at Cowes Yacht Haven. The next session at the Yacht Haven will take place on
Tuesday 7th January 2014. For further information, please call 0300 123 23 23.
Schools Absence. John Coghlan, Director of Hampshire County Council’s Children’s Services advised the need for
the IW Council to raise aspirations in schools. This follows news that Island Secondary School
Attendance rates are by far worst in the UK. Mr Coghlan outlined several reasons for this on the
Isle of Wight, including that term-time holidays were more affordable and attainable for parents
who work during holiday periods. In the meantime, parents continue to approach me concerning new Government regulations
which came into force in September restricting family holiday’s taking place during Term times.
I’m advised parents who default will be fined £60 (£120- If not paid within 28 days!) Safe Routes To Local Schools. Thank you to residents who contacted me last month relating to Parking Issues in Crossfield Av-
enue. In the coming weeks, I’m looking forward to meeting up with Highways and Cowes Enter-
prise College. In the meantime, I’ve attended site visits with Officers outside Gurnard
Primary School and Blackberry Lane. It seems likely Parking Restrictions seem inevitable, given
the expansion and popularity of our schools. Once proposals are tabled, I’ll ensure Local
Residents are informed!
Cowes Community Bus. Last month, charges were implemented on Service 32 which runs between Cowes, Gurnard and
Northwood. Regrettably, this was not advertised to myself, the local bus forum or local councils
who knew little about this new legislation! Charges only apply to customers who do not carry a
Concessionary Pass, Rover Tickets, and the over 18. Subsequently, I’ve negotiated the fare to be
reduced from £2 each way to £2 for a return trip! We remain hopeful, that the current service will
soon be diverted via Aldi in Three Gates Road. Providing the Traffic Commissioners do not
object this is likely to commence at the end of November. More Bus News! At the meeting the Economy & Environment Scrutiny Panel Southern Vectis’ Operations
Manager answered questions from Councillors, Public Transport Users and Youth
Councillors. Locally, we were advised that when the new fleet of buses are on the Island, this
will give greater capacity on service 1 between Cowes and Newport…This is being rigorously
pursued!
In a Nutshell: In the last month: I attended the AONB Annual Forum, and visited Newtown Nature Reserve. Members were
advised that following spring tides this Autumn shingle spits which offer some shelter for
Newtown Harbour were breached. If lost as a result, this could adversely impact upon the
ecology of the harbour. Woodland, rear of Solent Lawns has been marketed for sale. The sale has been delayed until
December, to enable interested parties to explore options. I continue to receive correspondence from residents concerned about Wind Turbines at
Parkhurst. A request was made for the planning committee to visit Wind Farms elsewhere. I have been approached by residents enquiring the timescales for the replacement of trees on
Mornington Green.

GURNARD GUIDES & BROWNIES
The Brownies had a very busy time leading up to the summer holidays
with many activities being enjoyed out of doors. For the last meeting
we entertained parents and friends with a concert of singing, poems and
short playlet. During the summer break we joined with Northwood and
Parkhurst Brownies for a day at Coleman’s Farm which was very much enjoyed by all.
Feeding the lambs was a great success as was the bus ride – our thanks to Southern Vectis
and the driver for helping to make the day even more fun – riding on a double decker bus
was very popular!
This term we are working on the Blind Awareness badge which includes getting dressed,
tasting and smelling whilst blindfolded and also feeling what Braille is like.
The next challenge is the Wellies Challenge!! In November we will be joining with the
scout section for the Remembrance Day Parade.
The Guides have held coffee evenings, spent time out of doors erecting tents and cooking.
We also have the Blind Awareness Badge as our main one at present.
Sandy and Ellis took 5 guides to the Wellies and Wristbands camp at Foxlease in the New
Forest where they thoroughly enjoyed many varied activities and of course the music –
Weliles and Wristbands being a takeoff from the music festivals, wellies for the mud and
wristbands entry.
We will be taking part in the Remembrance Day Parade along with all other sections.
We are few Guides at present so if any girls between 10-14 would like to join in friend-
ship and fun do please contact me – Helen Coleman on 506254.
Within North Wight District we have a waiting list of 26 girls who would love to join a
Brownie Pack so if there are any ladies out there who would be interested in finding out/
starting up another pack please contact either Jane Peakall Tel.521274 or Margaret
Nicholls Tel. 200375 – you would of course be given plenty of support etc
Gurnard Village Cottage Garden Society In September Sarah Lang gave a very interesting talk about some of our
Christmas traditions. Did you know that one of the original ingredients of a
mince pie was actually minced beef?
November brings the Annual General Meeting of the society, followed by an
American Supper. Where has that year gone!
Please come along and support us, members and visitors always very welcome.
The meeting in December will be the annual Carrot Trophy quiz, which this
year will be hosted by ourselves at the
Village Hall on FRIDAY 13th DECEMBER
Please note the meeting will not be the first Wednesday in the month
Report continued:
Cabinet has agreed to making Gurnard Parish Council ‘Special Purchaser’ for the Playing Field and
Orchard site. It is anticipated, that Gurnard Parish council will lease these parcels of land from the Isle of Wight Council for community use

GURNARD WI REPORT FOR OCTOBER
On a blustery night we had a good turn out of members. Shei-
la Baker welcomed 44 ladies. A big welcome was given to
Kate…….. who is joining the WI tonight. Our best wishes
were sent to Liz Duval who is making a slow recovery.
It was good to see Barbara Leek back in the fold again.
Several members have put their names down for the County Christmas Luncheon at the Yacht
Haven on December 12th. We were informed a representative of the Air Ambulance will
attend our AGM to collect the cheque, money we have donated through the year. Seaview
Amble Ramble was enjoyed by all, members were made very welcome, the walk was good but
the puddings at lunch ‘were to die for’. Unfortunately the Country Dancing has had to be
cancelled due to lack of support. A review will take place next year. If we can generate more
members it could start again in September 2014. There is to be a Christmas Tree display at the
Methodist Church Cowes on the 4th to 11th December. We were delighted to announce Gurnard
Bay WI will be displaying a decorated tree. Liz Downer volunteered with her group of Spinney
Quilters. Our treasurer announced our last speaker Susan Van Prague the Chocolate lady,
donated her fee the Help the Heroes. President Sheila Baker has her photo in the Federation
Newsletter with Sue Swarby at the Flower arranging afternoon. Notes for your diary…...
Members are looking forward to a riotous evening when the Beetle Drive takes place, all ladies
welcome, October 26th 7.30pm £1.50 tea and coffee available. Whist next session November
5th. The Spinney Quilters are having a Crafty Café morning November 9th 10am in the Village
Hall. The Solent Group meeting will be at Gurnard Village Hall Tuesday 19th November at
2pm. The next Village Lunch will be Christmassy, on December 3rd £6.50 names to be taken
next month. We have heard The Children’s Bereavement Society is in jeopardy of closing
down; a big effort is to be made all over the Island to raise funds in the way of a big cake bake.
To generate our donation we are to bake cakes to be sold or our AGM ….. We are still
donating to the Food Bank, Sheila took 5.1kgs from the last meeting. The next collection will
be at our December meeting.
The annual plea for members to come forward to join the committee at the AGM was made.
Rosemary Joy had us all spellbound with the restored films of the magnificent J Class boats of
the 1930’s.
Film was found abandoned in a basement of an old house in London years ago, after much care
and attention and research she has now got them on DVD’s an exceptional pleasure for all,
after many questions Val Cleary gave the vote of thanks.
Competition winners for a photo of a yacht taken by you….1st Wendy Peskett, 2nd Jan Wildish,
3rd June Powis.
Potted Plant Wendy Peskett, June Powis.
Raffle winners June Powis, Wendy Peskett, Drew Hill Sue Rumble and Wendy Bonser
At he end of the meeting we were given a warning by a member, of a scam going on in
Southampton to which the IOW travellers seem to be targeted. A young man is pleading with
the public to give him money because he has no money to get home to Hythe; we heard several
members of the public have been caught out. We were warned to be aware of this happening.
Next meeting 21st November AGM no speaker lots of chat instead….
Please come you will be made very welcome.
Don’t forget your cake ,,, for a very good cause.

At the club’s AGM last week,
Marcel Westbrook stood down as
our Admiral and Caroline Stevens
was unanimously elected in his
place. Mark Harrison was confirmed as Commodore
for a third year, Judith French was elected Vice-
Commodore, Steve Cole as Rear-Commodore,
Sailing and Julian Metcalf as Rear-Commodore,
House. Other office holders and committee
members were thanked for volunteering and for all
their hard work in ensuring the club continues to run
smoothly for sailing and non-sailing members.
Earlier in the month we held an afternoon regatta for
our Laser sailors and this was well attended,
although conditions were very light. We have some
further Laser coaching arranged for the coming
week and we are extremely pleased that a former
national champion has agreed to come and give us
some racing tips. Club sailing will continue into the
Autumn and the early part of De-
cember on Sunday mornings with
the Frostbite series beginning next
week. This is for the hardy sailors
only!

CS35 COASTAL FOOTPATH ON GURNARD MARSH – TRAFFIC REG-
ULATION ORDER This is the footpath that runs along the sea wall from the bottom of Solent View
Road, past the Little Gloster and on to the Luck, which has technically been
closed for years due to the collapsed sea wall. The IW Council is considering
options to either extinguish the footpath (unwelcome move), or to issue a Traffic
Regulation Order that will effectively confirm its current closed state for now, but would not
close the door on it being reinstated as a footpath, should funding become available to rebuild
the sea wall (which is in private ownership), upon which it runs of course. There will be a
formal consultation process soon, so we are told.
FUTURE PARISH COUNCIL MEETINGS There was an extra full Parish Council meeting on 14th November at 7pm. There may be
committee meetings during November and residents are welcome to attend all these meetings,
which are currently held at the Village Hall in Worsley Road. Check the Parish notice board
and/or the Parish Council’s website for meeting confirmation and the agendas. To remind you
again the address is www.gurnardpc.co.uk

SAFER NEIGHBOURHOOD OFFICER AND ENVIRONMENT & NEIGHBOUR-
HOODS OFFICER (ENO)
The IW Council Neighbourhoods Officer Neil Perry and PCSO Lisa Paul from the safer
neighbourhoods team were unable to attend the October meeting but PCSO Lisa Paul sent a
report which, in the past 30 days, included one crime with a drunk and disorderly male, who
was arrested and went to court on 8/10/13. The speed watch exercise was well advertised by
the Police with leaflets being given out, and this took place at the south end of Rew Street
and was attended by 4 residents. 6 cars were observed exceeding the speed limit going down
the hill, and an induction event for volunteers will take place soon. A similar event in
Pallance Road the same day was well attended
COMMUNITY TRANSPORT SCHEME The Local Community Transport Forum met on 9/10/13, and the latest information includes
a change to the No 32 route being considered to include the new Aldi store. A 100%
increase in the flat rate fare was unexpectedly introduced recently, but it has now been
agreed that under 18’s will travel free and the £2 fare will now be a return fare. A local
Forum meeting took place on 9/10/13 and a request is being made to have the IW
Community Bus Forum reconstituted.
PLEASE NOTE: DRIVERS ARE STILL NEEDED ON A CONTINUING BASIS
FROM COWES, NORTHWOOD & GURNARD, so if anyone wants to put their name
forward as a volunteer driver to be added to the waiting list, please call Rusty on 567522.
WITHOUT DRIVERS, OUR BUS SCHEME WILL STOP!
OPEN SPACES PROJECT The new site plan is still on our website - go to www.gurnardpc.co.uk – click on “projects”
and then “school open spaces”.
The IW Council considered the asset transfer arrangements for the former playing field and
orchard open spaces on 8/10/13 and it has agreed to give Gurnard Parish Council preferred
status for the transfer, but the details have yet to be ironed out. The orchard space has now
been cut back and looks much better but the long term arrangements for maintenance have
yet to be decided. The Community Projects Committee set up a very small working party to
look at all the equipment and ground works options for the new site and it met on 23rd
September - it has selected a possible scheme, which will be run past the Community
Projects Committee when it next meets on 28th November. The planning application
process has been put no hold for the moment, until the transfer details are clarified.
ISLAND ROADS PFI WORKS IN GURNARD
At the time of writing the only work, as part of this huge Island wide project, that is planned
for Gurnard in November is some resurfacing works on Princes Esplanade on 15/11/13,
which will last for 4 days.

member state of the European Community

are received by the extended deadline of Tuesday 5th November, the deadline will be further
extended to Tuesday 3rd December. There are many people in the Village who love Gurnard
- if you are one of them and are interested in your Village and would like to make a differ-
ence by being considered for co-option on to the Parish Council, please write to the Parish
Clerk (or e-mail) with details of why you want to come on, and what you could bring to the
Council:
Mr Rusty Adams, Clerk to Gurnard Parish Council 63, Wellington Road, RYDE PO33 3QJ
GURNARD COMMUNITY ASSOCIATION – VACANCY
The Gurnard Community Association is a charity set up by the Parish Council about 3 years
ago, specifically to fundraise for project work where a funding source may not be available
to the Parish Council, but where it is available to charities. This only meets once a year, until
it takes on a project when the frequency will increase slightly.
Due to us losing a member on the association recently there is at least one vacancy, but 2
could easily be accommodated.
If you have any interest in helping out in what is NOT a burdensome role, please do make
contact with Rusty Adams on 567522 or [email protected] to find out more. Many
thanks – Please help us with this.
GURNARD REGATTA 2013/2014
The Steering Group’s final wash up meeting on 3rd October to review this year’s event, and
also to consider if it will be run again in 2014, was postponed – more details next month on
this.
NEIGHBOURHOOD PLAN
At the time of writing the Steering Group was due to meet again on 24/10/13 (and
then21/11/13), which will include a report on progress made with the analysis of the Real
Time Planning events in September and crucially to agree the framework around which we
shall build the final Plan document - once this is finalized it will be much clearer what is still
needed, and the process of slotting the various reports & policies etc into it will be easier – it
will also be decided when to call another public meeting – more details on this later. Some
success has been made in liaising with local landowners and developers and it is hoped to
meet with some very soon – this is part of the Neighbourhood Plan consultation process the
GURNARD PARISH COUNCIL
15
team is required to undertake, and perhaps is the area that has been the most
challenging to date. Another area that is being worked upon is firming up on
green area designations around the Parish, and also gaining a better understand-
ing of just how influential the recently completed and adopted housing needs
survey report is in the determination of future planning applications. The consultant will be
starting very soon to write some of the policies that are required for the final plan, and there
are also some documents that are planned to be completed “in house”, such as evidence logs
etc – all sounding a little uninteresting I know, but fundamental to having the Plan pass its
final examination. The Community and Social Wellbeing Focus Group would benefit from
one or two additional members to complete its work – this is looking at what aspirations
residents may have for facilities in the Village, which could include sport, leisure & recreation
and anything else leading to Village infrastructure improvements for local people - please
contact Rusty on 567522 for more details on this. Unfortunately the Steering Group was
unable to have a further information presence in the marquee at the Harvest Festival event on
Spencer’s Field on 21/9/13, due to members’ other commitments. Don’t forget you can see all
the reports as they are uploaded to the Parish Council’s website. (www.gurnardpc.co.uk – look
under “Projects” for Neighbourhood Plan – scroll down to the bottom of the page)
You can also join us on Facebook at www.facebook.com/GurnardNeighbourhoodPlan or
twitter @GurnardPlan (follow it on www.twitter.com/GurnardPlan)
Finally, as always, many thanks to those of you have been so supportive of this venture – your
support and proactive response to the various initiatives along the way are fundamental to the
success of the project, together with providing continued motivation for our hard-working
Steering Group.
LITTER PICK EVENTS
The latest event took place on Saturday 26th October 2013, and the plan was to work along
Gurnard beach as the tides were right - more details on this later on. There will probably be
another litter pick event in March 2014 – watch this space. In the meantime PLEASE do
continue to consider if you’d be prepared to have your name added to our list – it would be
great to have a bank of people who we know would like to be of help in principle! Please let
Rusty Adams know (567522) if you’d like your name adding to the list.
