BIOGRAPHIESFor nearly 20 years, ROB KAPILOW has brought the
joy and wonders of Classical music – and unraveled some
of its mysteries – to audiences of all ages and backgrounds.
Characterized by his unique ability to create an “aha”
moment for his audiences and collaborators, whatever
their level of musical sophistication or naiveté, Kapilow’s
work brings music into people’s lives – opening new ears to
musical experiences and helping people to listen actively
rather than just hear. The Boston Globe said, “It’s a cheering
thought that this kind of missionary enterprise did not pass
from this earth with Leonard Bernstein. Rob Kapilow is
awfully good at what he does. We need him.”
The reach of his interactive events and activities
is wide, both geographically and culturally – from native
American tribal communities in Montana and inner-city
high school students in Louisiana to wine tasters in the

Napa Valley. From tots barely out of diapers to musicologists
hailed from Ivy League programs, his audiences are diverse
and unexpected, but invariably rapt and keen to come back
for more.
Kapilow’s range of activities is astonishingly broad,
including his What Makes It Great? presentations (now
in their 17th season in New York and Boston), his family
compositions and Family Musik events, and his Citypieces.
His popularity and appeal are reflected in notable
invitations and achievements; he appeared on NBC’s Today
Show in conversation with then-host Katie Couric, and
presented a special What Makes It Great? event for broadcast
on PBS’s Live From Lincoln Center in 2008. He has written
two highly popular books published by Wiley/Lincoln
Center: All You Have to Do Is Listen (2008), which won a
PROSE Award for “Best Book in Music and Performing
Arts,” and What Makes It Great? (2011), the first book of its
kind to be specially designed for the iPad with embedded
musical examples.
A frequent guest speaker for museums, business groups,
foundations, hospitals, law schools, math departments and
conferences, Kapilow is constantly finding connections and
intersections between music and the outside world, making
art essential to everyday life.
A documentary film – Summer Sun, Winter Moon,
named after Kapilow’s choral and symphonic work of the
same title – aired nationwide on PBS. He also wrote a
piece for the Marin Symphony commemorating the 75th
anniversary of the Golden Gate Bridge.
Kapilow’s career has been marked by numerous major
awards and grants. He won first place in the Fontainebleau
Casadesus Piano Competition and was the second-place
winner of the Antal Dorati Conductor’s Competition
with the Detroit Symphony. Featured on Chicago Public
Radio’s prestigious Composers in America series, Kapilow is
a recipient of an Exxon “Meet-the-Composer” grant and
numerous ASCAP awards.
Kapilow has conducted many of North America’s
finest orchestras, including the Philadelphia Orchestra; the
National Symphony; the St. Louis, Atlanta, Toronto, and
Detroit symphonies; and the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra.
He is an exclusive Schirmer composer and his compositions
have been performed by almost every major American
orchestra as well as ensembles in Europe, Asia, and Australia.
With her “passion and commanding stage presence”
(The Strad), violinist BELLA HRISTOVA engages with
“natural command, tenderness and fervent virtuosity,”
hails The Washington Post. First Prize winner in the 2009
Young Concert Artists International Auditions, Hristova
was the first recipient of YCA’s Helen Armstrong Violin
Fellowship. She also won First Prize at the 2007 Michael
Hill International Competition in New Zealand, resulting
in an acclaimed concert tour and CD recording for the
Naxos label. The Strad credits her unwavering success to her
“innate musicality that makes musical sense of each phrase
she plays.”
The CAL STATE FULLERTON UNIVERSITY
SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA trains outstanding
instrumentalists in a wide range of orchestral styles. The
students receive opportunities to study and perform with
organizations such as the Los Angeles Philharmonic and
the Pacific Symphony Orchestra. Orchestra members have
played with internationally acclaimed performers, including
Yo-Yo Ma, the Turtle Island String Quartet, and the St.
Petersburg Quartet. n

SAVION GLOVER SOLE SANCTuARy
Friday, March 22, 2013, 8:00 PM
There will be one 20-minute intermission.
The taking of photographs or use of recording devices is strictly prohibited.
BIOGRAPHYSAVION GLOVER marked his debut at age 12 in
the Broadway musical The Tap Dance Kid and followed with
Black and Blue. He made history at age 19 for being the
youngest National Endowment for the Arts grant recipient
with his role in the musical Jelly’s Last Jam. But it was the
wildly successful Broadway production Bring in ’da Noise,
Bring in ’da Funk that made the Tap marvel a household
name, earning him a Tony Award for “Best Choreography”
and praise from critics.
Trained by the late Tap dance legends Sammy Davis,
Jr., and Gregory Hines, Glover is known for his unique,
hard-hitting style that relies heavily on improvisational
choreography drawing from an innovative fusion of Jazz,
Hip-Hop, Be-Bop, and World music rhythms and patterns.
The Dance Journal raves, “He … stamps out rhythm after
rhythm with such ease that it’s hard to remember that the
majority of his choreography is actually ‘improvography.’ ”
Deemed a “master of Tap” by The New York Times,
Glover has dedicated much of his career to restoring the
dance form to its early African roots, going back to the days
when slaves were forbidden to play drums. As a result, the
slaves resorted to “drumming” out the beat with their feet in
the form of Tap. The Seattle Times cheers Glover’s “restless
drive to branch out, [and] change it up.”
The dancer-choreographer-teacher founded and runs
the HooFeRz CLuB School for Tap in Newark, New Jersey.
His film credits include Tap (also featuring Hines and
Davis), Spike Lee’s Bamboozled, and the Disney box-office
hit Happy Feet, which Glover co-choreographed. The Tap
icon has danced on stages worldwide, including Lincoln
Center, Kennedy Center, the Smithsonian Institution,
Carnegie Hall, and the White House. n

BIOGRAPHIESWith a cast of award-winning performers from around
the world – including Hollywood’s Magic Castle and Las
Vegas – the ALL NEW 57th ANNUAL EDITION OF
IT’S MAGIC! leaves audiences speechless and spellbound
with sleight-of-hand illusions, stage tricks, and comedy and
variety acts. It’s “the best magic show in town!” cheers the
Los Angeles Times.
It’s Magic! has been delighting enthusiasts for more
than five decades. This live stage show is unique, featuring
internationally acclaimed professional illusionists, with each
act carefully selected to represent the vast variety of magic.
The widespread success of It’s Magic!, which started as
Hocus Pocus in 1956, led to the birth of Hollywood’s Magic
Castle, a private club for magicians and magic enthusiasts
that opened its doors in 1963. Audiences were hypnotized
by sold-out magic shows featuring legendary masters of
illusions Harry Blackstone, John Calvert, Mark Wilson,
Lance Burton, and Harry Anderson. It’s Magic! has cast its
spell over captivated crowds on the West Coast and beyond,
including Hawaii, Arizona, California, and Washington.
The host of the hit shows Cupcake Wars and Last
Cake Standing on the Food Network, JUSTIN WILLMAN
has also been on the Rachael Ray show and Hub Network’s
HubWorld and Scrabble Showdown. He has appeared in the
Showtime documentary Make Believe, the CBS hit The
Defenders, and Disney’s The Suite Life on Deck. He has toured
the world with his one-man comedy-and-magic live show
Tricked Out and the neo-vaudeville circus-on-wheels Music,
Magic & Make Peace tour.
JONATHAN PENDRAGON was chosen by
MAGIC Magazine as one of 10 living magicians whose work
shaped magic in the 20th and 21st centuries. His spectacular
levitation illusion can be seen in the film Bogus.
America’s Got Talent finalists DAVID MAAS and
DANIA KASEEVA are known for their nonstop and
dynamically choreographed dance exhibitions, punctuated
by lightning-speed costume transformations that often leave
audiences stunned and speechless.
In 1986, JULIANA CHEN won the All-China
Best Magician competition. It was the first of many awards
to come, including 1992’s “Stage Magician of the Year.”
In 1997, she claimed the World Championship at the
World Congress of Magicians, an event also known as the
Olympics of magic. She became the first woman – and the
first magician of Chinese heritage – to win Gold (the top
honor) in the competition’s 50-year history.
ADAM TRENT is “Justin Timberlake meets David
Copperfield,” hails GP4T magazine. One of “The 10 Most
Influential Youths in the Nation,” according to US News &
World Report, Trent blends magic tricks with wit, comedy,
and dancing and singing to original Pop music.
With a trick he calls The Lord of Illusions, California
native DAN BIRCH makes live doves appear and then
transforms them into a live poodle. The magician has
had featured roles in the hit TV series Quantum Leap and
Columbo. He has also appeared on Fox’s Good Day LA and
30 Seconds to Fame. n

THE HIT MEN THE ORIGINAL STARS OF FRANKIE VALLI
& THE FOUR SEASONSWith Special Guests
JERRY VIVINO and RICHIE GAJATE GARCIA
Saturday, April 6, 2013, 8:00 PM
There will be one 20-minute intermission. The taking of photographs or use of recording devices is strictly prohibited.
BIOGRAPHYConsisting of original members of mega acts – such as
Frankie Valli & The Four Seasons, Tommy James and The
Shondells, The Critters, Cat Stevens, Jim Croce, Elton John
& Kiki Dee, and Carly Simon – THE HIT MEN helped
turn catchy tunes into major hits, including Oh, What a
Night; Who Loves You; Walk Like a Man; Big Girls Don’t Cry;
and Hanky Panky.
These musicians revive the magic they created on
world stages and in recording studios years ago, treating
the audience to an electrifying evening of timeless tunes,
including Marianne, Silence Is Golden, and the Gold hits
Peace Train, You’re So Vain, You Belong to Me, Mr. Dieingly
Sad, and Younger Girl.
Inspired by the phenomenal success of the Tony-
winning Broadway musical Jersey Boys, which was based on
the career of Frankie Valli & The Four Seasons, Gerry Polci
(the lead singer on the group’s December 1963 [Oh, What a
Night]) and the other members re-formed, teaming up with
A-list studio musicians to create The Hit Men.
When on stage, members of The Hit Men also share
behind-the-scenes stories and anecdotes from their days on the
road, in the recording studios, and on the concert circuit. The
five musicians include Polci and Lee Shapiro (Frankie Valli
& The Four Seasons, Barry Manilow); Jimmy Ryan (Carly
Simon, Cat Stevens); Larry Gates (Desmond Child, Carole
King); and Russ Velazquez (Sting, The Ramones). Special
guest Jerry Vivino is a member of the Basic Cable Band on The
Conan O’Brien Show and was also a member of NBC’s The
Tonight Show Band. Richie Gajate Garcia has worked with
Sting, Phil Collins, Diana Ross, and Don Henley. n

THE UKULELE ORCHESTRA OF GREAT BRITAIN
Sunday, April 7, 2013, 3:00 PM
There will be one 20-minute intermission. The taking of photographs or use of recording devices is strictly prohibited.
BIOGRAPHYWhen THE UKULELE ORCHESTRA OF
GREAT BRITAIN puts on a show, there are no drums,
pianos, backing tracks, or electronic trickery. Instead, there
are a lot of catchy, foot-stomping tunes on ukuleles, a bit
of comedy, and tons of sheer fun. The singing, strumming
ensemble believes that all genres of music are available
for reinterpretation, as long as they are played on the
ukulele. Expect anything from Tchaikovsky to Nirvana via
Otis Redding and Spaghetti Western soundtracks. Guitar
Magazine called the group “virtuosic.”
Formed in 1985, the orchestra’s first gig instantly sold-
out. The current group has been playing together more than
20 years, delivering standing-room-only concerts around the
world, including Great Britain, Germany, Sweden, Finland,
Poland, France, United States, and Japan. The ensemble has
performed at prestigious venues such as the Sydney Opera
House, The Royal Albert Hall, and New York’s Carnegie
Hall.
The Ukulele Orchestra’s music has been used in
films, plays, and commercials. The Independent praised,
“Impressive solo voices and an absolute mastery of strum,
pluck, and twang ensured the sheer joy and beauty of the
music was never lost in the comedy. …Perfectly polished
professionalism.” n
